Winter Storm Indra will deliver a cross-country swath of snow this week across the Rockies, Midwest and Northeast, likely contributing to travel headaches in parts of those regions.

Indra was named Sunday afternoon as the National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for much of Utah, including Salt Lake City, satisfying the population criteria for naming.

Indra has already brought snow to the Cascades and Sierra Nevada and will move into the Rockies and northern Plains through Monday.

Thundersnow was reported in the northern Sierra late Sunday morning.

It was slow going, or not going at all, in Donner Pass on Interstate 80 in the Sierra Saturday evening due to heavy snowfall.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories have been posted in parts of the Rockies, from Montana to Colorado and the Nebraska panhandle and westward to Utah, including the Salt Lake City metro area, and Nevada. Winter storm warnings are also posted in the Sierra through Monday morning.

Cold air is expected to remain in place in the northern tier of states as Indra’s low-pressure system tracks from the Pacific Northwest early in the week into the Great Lakes by midweek. Along and north of the low’s track, temperatures are expected to be cold enough for accumulating snow.

While this is expected to be a lighter snowfall event overall than Winter Storm Harper this past weekend, it may still produce travel impacts in the affected areas in the form of slippery, snow-covered roads and blowing and drifting snow.

Here is our forecast timeline, followed by our latest snowfall forecast.

Indra Forecast

Monday

  • On Monday, snow will persist from parts of the Great Basin into the northern and central Rockies while also spreading into the northern and central Plains and upper Midwest through the day.
  • Monday night, the swath of snow will stretch from the central Rockies to the central Plains, upper Midwest and northern Great Lakes. Some patchy freezing rain or sleet is possible in the central Plains.

Tuesday

  • Although this storm is not expected to be particularly strong, the low-pressure system may intensify a bit on Tuesday as it moves into the Midwest.
  • A band of moderate to locally heavy snow may set up from parts of Nebraska and Iowa into southeast Minnesota, far northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Lower Michigan.
  • Some freezing rain or sleet ma fall in parts of Iowa and Illinois.
  • This could lead to travel impacts, including snow-covered roads and flight delays.
  • Snow will spread into parts of the interior Northeast Tuesday night, from northern Pennsylvania into western, central and upstate New York. Some freezing rain or sleet is possible.
<img class=”styles__noscript__2rw2y” src=”http://www.noticiasdodia.onlinenewsbusiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/DCT_SPECIAL26_1280x720.jpg” srcset=”http://www.noticiasdodia.onlinenewsbusiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/DCT_SPECIAL26_1280x720.jpg 400w, http://www.noticiasdodia.onlinenewsbusiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/DCT_SPECIAL26_1280x720.jpg 800w” >

Wednesday

  • The area of low pressure will track into southeastern Canada, but snow and some freezing rain will remain possible across parts of the interior Northeast.
  • A rain/snow mix is likely from Arkansas and northern Mississippi northeastward to southern Michigan, which will likely turn over to all snow on the western edge later on Wednesday.
  • Mainly rain is expected along the Interstate 95 corridor from Boston to New York City and Philadelphia.
  • Another wave of low pressure may develop along the cold front by Wednesday night or Thursday.
  • This could allow snow to persist in portions of the interior Northeast Wednesday night through Thursday.

Snowfall Forecast

  • Parts of the Rockies and Sierra will pick up a foot of snow.
  • A swath of the upper Midwest from Nebraska to Michigan may pick up 6 inches of snow Tuesday into Wednesday.
  • It remains too soon to be certain, but most areas of the interior Northeast, from northern Pennsylvania to western, central, upstate New York and northern New England are expected to see light to moderate snow accumulations, much less than those from Winter Storm Harper.

For all the controversial calls. For all the potential on the other sideline, two things remain constant.

The Patriots have Bill Belichick, and they have Tom Brady.

That’s why they’re heading to yet another Super Bowl.

The one way to make sure Patrick Mahomes didn’t lead the Chiefs back again was to not let him have the chance, as the Patriots took the first possession of overtime and drove for a touchdown, with Rex Burkhead plowing in for the score and giving them a 37-31 win.

The Patriots will face the Rams in Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta in two weeks, for a shot at a sixth title between the best coach and quarterback in the game.

And that game will have to work to match this one.

The lead changed hands five times in the fourth quarter, as a game that was slow to start reached a frantic pace late.

The Patriots dominated the first half, pulling out to a 14-0 lead, and holding the high-powered Chiefs to 32 yards in the first 30 minutes. And that included a 42-yard pass to Tyreek Hill, which underscores the job the Patriots defense did.

The Chiefs did what they have done so often this season, getting hot on offense. Mahomes finished with three touchdowns in the second half, doing everything he could.

But for all the subplots we’ll talk about for the next few days (pick plays, Julian Edelman‘s thumbs, fourth down calls which didn’t work and then they did, the officiating, again), Brady stepped in to do what he has done so often.

After a penalty wiped out an interception, Brady hit Rob Gronkowski for a 25-yard completion, and then Rex Burkhead scored from 4 yards out on the following play for the lead.

It was an 84-second drive for what appeared to be a game-winning score. But that left 39 seconds for Mahomes, and he moved them quickly into position for a field goal and a chance for a coin flip.

But Brady didn’t give him another one, leading a 13-play, 75-yard march for the winner.

And a shot at even more history.

The Kentucky high school student seen in a viral video standing-face-to-face with a Native American protester at a Washington rally spoke out for the first time Sunday evening, claiming in a statement that he and his classmates were taunted by a group of African-American protesters and saying that he and his family had received death threats.

Nick Sandmann, a junior at Covington Catholic High School, said he was “mortified that so many people have come to believe something that did not happen — that students from my school were chanting or acting in a racist fashion toward African Americans or Native Americans. I did not do that, do not have hateful feelings in my heart and did not witness any of my classmates doing that.”

The students initially were accused of mocking a Native American participant in the Indigenous Peoples March, which coincided with the March for Life. A snippet of video from the apparent confrontation quickly gained traction on social media, with many condemning the students — some of whom were wearing “Make America Great Again” apparel — and some calling for them to be identified and harassed. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington and the high school issued a joint statement apologizing to the activist, identified as Nathan Phillips Saturday.

However, the emergence of longer video that appears to show some students being harassed prompted some conservatives to take back their earlier criticisms of the students.

Sandmann said he and his classmates had taken part in the March for Life and had arrived at the Lincoln Memorial to meet the buses that would take them back to Kentucky.

However, Sandmann said, the students were confronted by four members of the Black Hebrew Israelite movement, who “called us ‘racists,’ ‘bigots,’ ‘white crackers,’ ‘f—-ts,’ and ‘incest kids.’ They also taunted an African-American student from my school by telling him that we would ‘harvest his organs.'”

Sandmann said one of the students asked a teacher chaperoning the trip for permission to “begin our school spirit chants” to drown out the hecklers.

In one chant, the group appeared to perform the haka, a traditional Maori dance. Marcus Frejo, a member of the Pawnee and Seminole tribes who witnessed the chant, said he considered it mockery.

“At no time did I hear any student chant anything other than the school spirit chants,” Sandmann said. “I did not witness or hear any other students chant ‘build that wall’ or anything hateful or racist at any time. Assertions to the contrary are simply false.”

At that point, Phillips came toward the group with his drum and, according to Sandmann, “locked eyes with me and approached me, coming within inches of my face” and “played his drum the entire time he was in my face.”

Sandmann said he was trying to defuse the tense situation by remaining “motionless and calm.” He also denied taunting Phillips by making faces at him, but said he smiled at the protester “because I wanted him to know I was not going to become angry, intimidated or be provoked into a larger confrontation.”

CATHOLIC DIOCESE, HIGH SCHOOL APOLOGIZES AFTER VIDEO SHOWS STUDENTS IN CONFRONTATION WITH NATIVE AMERICANS

For his part, Phillips told The Associated Press Sunday that he was trying to keep the peace between the students and members of the group who were heckling them. He also insisted that the students were making disparaging remarks about Native Americans.

“They were making remarks to each other … (such as) ‘In my state those Indians are nothing but a bunch of drunks.’ How do I report that?” he said. “These young people were just roughshodding through our space, like what’s been going on for 500 years here — just walking through our territories, feeling like ‘this is ours.”

Frejo said he joined Phillips to defuse the tense situation, singing the anthem from the American Indian Movement with both men beating out the tempo on hand drums.

“I am being called every name in the book, including a racist, and I will not stand for this mob-like character assassination of my family’s name,” Sandmann said. ” … One person threatened to harm me at school and one person claims to live in my neighborhood. My parents are receiving death and professional threats because of the social media mob that has formed over this issue.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Donald Trump raised the possibility of one day granting amnesty to migrants living in the US illegally, after Democrats rejected his latest plan to fund a wall along the southern border and reopen the US government.

In a remark that angered Republicans while not being taken seriously by Democrats, Trump suggested legal status could be given to millions of undocumented people as part of a future grand bargain on American immigration law.

The president floated the idea in a tweet on Sunday that stressed he was, for now, only offering to extend legal protections for some refugees and people who were brought to the US illegally as children.

Sign up for the US morning briefing

“Amnesty will be used only on a much bigger deal, whether on immigration or something else,” Trump said. He also said there would “no big push” to deport those already living in the US without permission.

The US is more than four weeks into its longest government shutdown, which was triggered by Trump’s refusal to sign a bipartisan congressional spending plan that did not give him the billions of dollars he wants for a wall along the border with Mexico.

Trump’s emphatic promise to “build the wall” won him the support of many conservative voters during the 2016 presidential campaign. He claimed he would force Mexico to pay for the wall directly, but has recently effectively conceded this will not happen.

On Saturday, Trump said from the White House that he would agree to limited concessions for some undocumented immigrants if Democrats agreed to give him more than $5bn in public funds for the wall.

Trump’s offer would comprise a three-year extension in legal protection for roughly 700,000 “dreamers”, were brought to the US illegally as children, and approximately 300,000 refugees facing an end to temporary legal status.

The proposal was dismissed by senior Democrats even before Trump began speaking. Democrats are demanding that Trump reopen the government by signing the existing congressional spending plan before any further negotiations on immigration.

Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, described Trump’s plan as a “compilation of several previously rejected initiatives” that would not provide lasting security for dreamers and other groups.

“What is original in the president’s proposal is not good,” she said. “What is good in the proposal is not original.”

Republicans in the Senate will nonetheless take up Trump’s proposals next week. The Oklahoma senator James Lankford told ABC’s This Week the offer was “a reasonable compromise” and said: “The vote this week is not to pass the bill. It’s to open up and say, ‘Can we debate this? Can we amend it? Can we make changes?’”

Democrats are unlikely to join in. On Saturday Chuck Schumer, the minority leader in the Senate, accused Trump of “more hostage taking” as 800,000 federal government workers and hundreds of thousands of contractors continued to either work without pay or endure unpaid time off work.

On Sunday, Schumer said he did not think the president’s measures would pass the Senate. He also said he would push legislation to shield government workers from eviction or home foreclosure, repossession of cars and penalties for late payment of bills and student loans.

Trump, meanwhile, insulted Pelosi and derided the cleanliness of the California city that she represents in Congress. He wrote in a tweet: “And by the way, clean up the streets in San Francisco, they are disgusting!”

The president’s proposal also met hostile reactions among many on the Republican right, highlighting a political dilemma that Trump, who claims to be a master dealmaker, has created for himself.

Some conservatives dismissed the offer as being akin to an amnesty itself. Ann Coulter, the far-right author, said in a tweet: “Trump proposes amnesty. We voted for Trump and got Jeb!”

The former Florida governor Jeb Bush, who was perceived as soft on immigration by the Republican right, was one of several candidates Trump defeated in the party’s 2016 presidential primary contest.

Mike Pence, Trump’s vice-president, rejected the verdict of Coulter and other ultra-hardliners.

“It’s not amnesty,” he told Fox News on Sunday. “There’s no permanent status here at all, which is what amnesty contemplates.”

Trump has threatened to unilaterally declare an emergency to secure funding for the wall if the Democratic-controlled House refuses to approve his plans. Legal analysts have warned that such a drastic move would likely be halted by the courts.

Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, a Democrat, said on Sunday that the chaotic shutdown would only be repeated on future policy disputes if his party caved to Trump’s demands on wall funding before a reopening of the government.

“If the president can arbitrarily shut down the government now, he will do it time and again,” Warner told NBC’s Meet The Press. He and other Democrats have proposed passing separate legislation to ensure the out-of-pocket government workers are paid.

Several opinion polls have indicated that a majority of Americans oppose Trump’s plan to build a border wall and that more people blame Trump for the ongoing shutdown than blame Democrats in Congress.

An average of polls compiled by RealClearPolitics currently states that 55.3% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s performance, the highest figure since last March. A little over 41% of people approve.

On the eve of a holiday commemorating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Vice President Pence seemed to liken President Trump’s push for a border wall to the civil rights leader’s legacy.

Speaking Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” the vice president quoted from King’s “I Have a Dream” speech as he defended Trump’s latest pitch to secure funding for a barrier along the United States’ southern border. The budget impasse over the wall has resulted in the longest government shutdown in history, one that has left thousands of federal workers without pay.

“One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King was, ‘Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy,’ ” Pence said. “You think of how he changed America. He inspired us to change through the legislative process, to become a more perfect union.

“That’s exactly what President Trump is calling on Congress to do,” Pence continued. “Come to the table in the spirit of good faith. We’ll secure our border. We’ll reopen the government and we’ll move our nation forward as the president said yesterday to even a broader discussion about immigration reform in the months ahead.”

Pence was referring to the president’s latest proposal to end the partial government shutdown. On Saturday, Trump offered Democrats three years of deportation protections for some immigrants, including many who were brought to the country illegally as children, in exchange for $5.7 billion in wall funding.

Democrats, who have long sought protections for beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, who are known as “dreamers,” immediately rejected the proposal, arguing that the president should reopen the government before any talks on border security begin. Conservatives saw the president’s proposal as amnesty.

On Sunday, Pence appeared on multiple shows and defended Trump’s proposal, which he said “provides a framework” for ending the shutdown.

“What the president presented yesterday really is an effort to bring together ideas from both political parties,” Pence said on CBS. “I think it is an act of statesmanship on the president’s part to say, ‘Here is what I’m for. It includes my priorities, it includes priorities that Democrats have advanced for some period of time.’”

Pence’s comments about King drew immediate pushback from Democrats, including Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), who said Trump “is no MLK.”

“To equate the legacy of one of America’s finest statesmen and champions of civil rights with a vanity project built on racist ideology and hatred is beyond disgraceful,” Speier tweeted.

The NAACP called Pence’s comments “an insult” to King’s legacy.

The partial shutdown has closed parks across the country, including the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park in Atlanta. The park reopened in time for the holiday after it received a grant from Delta Air Lines. One of King’s children, Martin Luther King III, talked about the reopening on CNN on Sunday.

The Washington Post was unable to reach Martin Luther King III for comments about Pence’s remarks.

In recent years, the civil rights leader’s children have asked Trump to stop using what they believe to be divisive rhetoric.

Martin Luther King III called out Trump last year over reports that the president used vulgar words to deride African countries and said the country should instead bring more immigrants from countries such as Norway.

“When a president insists that our nation needs more citizens from white states like Norway, I don’t even think we need to spend any time even talking about what it says and what it is,” Martin Luther King III said, according to the Associated Press. “We got to find a way to work on this man’s heart.”

During the holiday commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. last year, his daughter, Bernice King, also told the AP that she hopes Trump would observe the holiday by avoiding offensive tweets.

“If he can dare to do that, I would be proud on that day that our president honored Dr. King by not doing things that are offensive,” Bernice King said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced he will take up legislation next week incorporating the deal President Trump outlined in a Saturday afternoon address that supporters hope will end a partial government shutdown now entering its second month.

The Kentucky Republican’s move to bring the deal up for a vote will put political pressure on Democrats in both chambers, who through their leaders publicly rejected Trump’s proposal Saturday afternoon.

It would take 60 votes to advance the measure in the Senate, which means Republicans will need the support of seven Democrats to pass the measure, assuming no GOP lawmakers vote against it.

The shutdown has increasingly hurt the operations of dozens of partially closed federal agencies and has left 800,000 federal workers without paychecks.

“I intend to move to this legislation this week,” McConnell said in a statement after Trump’s announcement. “With bipartisan cooperation, the Senate can send a bill to the House quickly so that they can take action as well. The situation for furloughed employees isn’t getting any brighter and the crisis at the border isn’t improved by show votes. But the President’s plan is a path toward addressing both issues quickly.”

But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer indicated he’ll push Democrats to block the bill, which they said only partially accomplishes the full legal status and pathway to citizenship that Democrats have long sought for “Dreamers,” who illegally entered the country as children.

“Offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking,” Schumer said in a statement Saturday.

The New York Democrat said Trump “keeps putting forward one-sided and ineffective remedies.” Schumer blamed Trump for initially revoking the protected status of “Dreamers.”

Trump’s offer would provide a three-year extension of protected legal status for those enrolled in the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. As part of the trade-off, the proposal calls for $5.7 billion for a border wall, which Democrats have so far opposed and refuse to agree to fund at any price.

Democratic leaders, however, rejected Trump’s offer in part because they are seeking permanent legal status and a pathway to citizenship for the “Dreamers” not something temporary.

House Democrats said next week they’ll instead take up border security provisions in legislation that does not include wall funding.

The Rams are going to the Super Bowl. This is the same outfit that finished 4-12 in 2016, Jeff Fisher’s last season with the team, and has gone 24-8 under Sean McVay. (If you haven’t heard, he’s 32 years old and already has a coaching tree that has his assistants landing head-coaching gigs.) Los Angeles outlasted New Orleans, 26-23 in overtime and now they’re headed to Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII, which you can stream right here on CBSSports.com. But here’s the thing: The Rams shouldn’t have won the NFC Championship Game.

Sean McVay wasn’t aggressive when he should’ve been

To repeat: The Rams shouldn’t have beaten the Saints. Not after McVay, considered one of the NFL‘s most innovative coaches, turtled up on the offense’s penultimate drive of regulation. Trailing 20-17 with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter, L.A. faced fourth-and-goal from the Saints’ 1-yard line. McVay opted to kick. To kick!

For some history, here’s CBSSports.com’s Jared Dubin:

“In the last two years on fourth-and-2 or less, on the opponent’s side of the field, the Rams have attempted three pass, six runs and 13 field goals. The results: Four first downs, three touchdowns, an interception and a fumble on the nine plays they went for it.”

There is no explaining this decision as the right one. Yes, the Rams eventually won, but we’ll get to the other reason they shouldn’t have. First, this:

On the ensuing drive, the Saints marched down the field, thanks in large part to this 43-yard catch by Ted Ginn that gave New Orleans the ball at the L.A. 13-yard line:

Worth noting: Had Lamarcus Joyner not tried to catch the ball, and instead attempted to break up the pass, it’s almost certainly an incompletion. It did happen and, it turns out, it didn’t matter. Because things got weird.

The NFL has an officiating problem

Three plays after Ginn’s big grab, on third down, Brees threw down the sidelines for TommyLee Lewis, who was promptly blown up by Nickell Robey-Coleman before the ball got there. And we can’t overstate that enough:

    And the freeze frame:

And the confirmation from former official and CBS Sports analyst Gene Steratore:

If pass interference is called, the game is over. The Saints can run the clock down to almost zero and kick the game-winner. But because Drew Brees threw incomplete on the first play after the two-minute warning (and two plays before the no-call against Lewis), not only did it stop the clock, it allowed the Rams to keep one of their timeouts. That would come back to haunt them moments later. After the Saints settled for a field goal to take the 23-20 lead, the Rams had 1:41 to get in field goal range.

Turns out, L.A. only needed 1:22 before Greg Zuerlein striped a 48-yarder. Again, disregarding the blown call against Lewis, if Brees completes the first-down pass, this isn’t an issue.

But New Orleans still had a chance at redemption; it won the coin toss, received the ball first in overtime, and Brees and the offense had driven to the 40-yard line before disaster struck. First, minimally, in the form of a six-yard loss by Mark Ingram. Then, monumentally on the next play:

    Oh boy.

That was Dante Fowler applying the pressure, whom the Rams traded for midway through the season to beef up the rushing attack. And it’s fair to say that third-round pick was worth it for just this one play, the one that effectively catapulted the Rams to the Super Bowl.

Four plays and 15 yards later, Zuerlein again took the field, and this time smoked a 57-yard game-winner that looked to be good from 70.

    WOW.

At the end of the day, this was about blown chances, missed opportunities and, frankly, some pretty terrible officiating. Which brings us to this:

The NFL admits they messed up

As you might imagine, Saints coach Sean Payton was beside himself after the game. He told reporters during his postgame press conference that he just got off the phone with the league office and “they blew the call.”  And not only was the hit on Lewis clear and obvious pass interference, there was also a helmet-to-helmet infraction. Payton said the league told him, “I don’t know if there was ever a more obvious pass interference call.”

“It’s tough to get over it,” Payton said. “We’ll probably never get over it.”

Poor officiating has been a recurring theme this season, though it’s a theme every season. And while the NFL has taken strides to simplify things like what it means to actually catch a football, there’s a ton of work to do. Why New York can’t overrule a call on the field in real time remains a mystery to us. If the argument is: “We don’t want to drag out the games,” we’ll ask this: Is that preferable to this? Because, sure, the game is over but folks will be talking about how the refs screwed the Saints out of a trip to the Super Bowl from now till the end of time.

If you’re the Saints and their fans, we’d have to imagine that this is considerably tougher to take than last year’s Minneapolis Miracle. For the Rams, it will be their fourth Super Bowl appearance.

Donald Trump was elected president partly by assuring the American people that “I alone can fix it.”

But precisely two years into his presidency, the government is not simply broken — it is in crisis, and Trump is grappling with the reality that he cannot fix it alone.

Trump’s management of the partial government shutdown — his first foray in divided government — has exposed as never before his shortcomings as a dealmaker. The president has been adamant about securing $5.7 billion in public money to construct his long-promised border wall, but has not won over congressional Democrats, who consider the wall immoral and have refused to negotiate over border security until the government reopens.

The 30-day shutdown — the impacts of which have begun rippling beyond the federal workforce into the everyday lives of millions of Americans — is defining the second half of Trump’s term and has set a foundation for the nascent 2020 presidential campaign.

The shutdown also has accentuated several fundamental traits of Trump’s presidency: his apparent shortage of empathy, in this case for furloughed workers; his difficulty accepting responsibility for a crisis he had said he would be proud to instigate; his tendency for revenge when it comes to one-upping political foes; and his seeming misunderstanding of Democrats’ motivations.

Trump on Saturday made a new offer to end the shutdown, proposing three years of deportation protections for some immigrants, including young people known as “dreamers,” in exchange for border wall funding.

But before Trump even made it to the presidential lectern in the White House’s stately Diplomatic Reception Room to announce what he called a “straightforward, fair, reasonable, and common sense” proposal, Democrats rejected it as a non-starter.

“What the president presented yesterday really is an effort to bring together ideas from both political parties,” Vice President Pence said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “I think it is an act of statesmanship on the president’s part to say, ‘Here is what I’m for. It includes my priorities, it includes priorities that Democrats have advanced for some period of time,’ and we believe it provides a framework for ending this impasse.”

Such an accord has proven elusive, however, in part because Democrats believe they have the upper hand politically in opposing Trump’s wall and feel no imperative to give ground.

“What really drove him was ‘Art of the Deal,’ that he could get stuff done in D.C. and deal with the knuckleheads,” said Republican strategist Mike Murphy, a sharp Trump critic. “People saw him as some sort of business wizard. That’s all disintegrating. It’s like McDonald’s not being able to make a hamburger.”

Trump has approached the shutdown primarily as a public relations challenge. He has used nearly every tool of his office — including a prime-time Oval Office address as well as a high-profile visit to the U.S.-Mexico border — to convince voters that the situation at the souther border has reached crisis levels and can only be solved by constructing a physical barrier.

Trump’s advisers argue the president has been successful at educating and persuading Americans even though his efforts have not led to a bipartisan deal. “You can’t turn an aircraft carrier on a dime,” said one White House official who, like some others interviewed, spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid.

But the data tell a more troubling story for the president. One month into the shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, a preponderance of public polls show Trump is losing the political fight. For instance, a Jan. 13 Washington Post-ABC News survey found that many more Americans blame him than blame Democrats for the shutdown, 53 percent to 29 percent. And the president’s job approval ratings continue to be decidedly negative.

“Even though he thinks he’s doing a great job for his core, it’s ripping the nation apart,” said one Trump friend, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity. “I don’t think there is a plan. He’s not listening to anybody because he thinks that if he folds on this he loses whatever constituency he thinks he has.”

Behind the scenes at the White House, some aides acknowledge the difficulties.

“The president is very much aware he’s losing the public opinion war on this one,” one senior administration official said. “He looks at the numbers.”

Other Trump advisers insist that the president is not driven by political considerations and is focused entirely on protecting the American people and finding a solution to illegal immigration.

John McLaughlin, a pollster on Trump’s 2016 campaign, said Trump’s suggestion to temporarily extend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which grants protections for some people brought to the United States illegally as children, is key to increasing his popularity.

“The White House needs to press that button and more often dangle that out there,” McLaughlin said. “We need to remind the voters every day that the president is willing to compromise and give legal status to DACA recipients in exchange for increased border security, but the Democrats are too intense about trying to defeat Trump right now.”

Some political professionals cautioned against rushing to judgment about the shutdown’s impact on Trump’s reelection, saying that November 2020 is a virtual eternity from now.

“This could all be forgotten in a week if and when we come to an agreement, the government opens and the wall is built,” Republican pollster Neil Newhouse said. “Nobody knows how this is going to turn out until we get a resolution. So it’s a national game of chicken.”

Trump has long seen his stewardship of the economy as his political calling card. Yet the instability in Washington is threatening to wreak havoc, with fresh gyrations in the stock market amid concerns about Trump’s trade war with China and fears of a prolonged shutdown.

Trump’s management of the impasse has also drawn criticism about his competence as an executive. The administration this past month has been playing a game of Whack-a-Mole, with West Wing aides saying they did no contingency planning for a shutdown this long and have been learning of problems from agencies and press reports in real time. Officials have scrambled to try to respond as best they can and keep key services operating, but they fear they may soon run out of so-called Band-Aid solutions and temporary pots of money may run dry in February, one official said.

Inside the West Wing, morale has been low in recent weeks. Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, has not sought to impose the same level of discipline as his predecessor, John F. Kelly, so aides flow in and out of the Oval Office, reminiscent of the early months of Trump’s presidency.

Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, is an increasingly powerful figure who has asserted himself, along with Pence and Mulvaney, in negotiations with lawmakers and believes there is a “big deal” to be had.

Two senior Republican aides said senators are skeptical that Pence speaks for the president, after Trump undercut him early in the shutdown.

Trump has been preoccupied by the political messaging and stagecraft of the shutdown showdown. He has personally met with outside allies to ask them to go on cable television to defend his position, and he has spent time calling those who have praised him.

The president has also gone days without speaking to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), leaving negotiations effectively at a standstill despite Trump’s latest offer Saturday.

“The shutdown has turned into a test of strength between the president and Washington Democrats, particularly the speaker, and how it ends and when will tell us a lot about whether they can forge a relationship over the next two years,” said Michael Steel, a GOP strategist who has been a top aide to former Republican House speakers John A. Boehner and Paul D. Ryan.

In private conversations with advisers, Trump alternately complains that nobody has presented him a deal to end to shutdown, complains about Pelosi and Schumer and asks how the fight affects his reelection chances. Aides said they have shown him polling that he is losing the shutdown battle and that most Americans do not think the situation at the border is a crisis, as he and his administration have termed it.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) repeatedly has told Trump that he believes Pelosi is trying to embarrass him, two people familiar with the conversations said.

Trump has accused Democrats of being insensitive to the dangers of illegal immigration. “They don’t see crime & drugs, they only see 2020 — which they are not going to win,” he tweeted on Sunday. He went on to single out Pelosi for behaving “irrationally” and acting as “a Radical Democrat.”

Pelosi and other Democrats, meanwhile, say Trump is immune to the hardships of federal workers who are going without paychecks.

“I don’t think that he understands the real-life impacts,” said Sen. Jon Tester (D), whose home state of Montana has one of the highest concentrations of federal workers. “Look, the guy was born with a lot of money, and that’s great. I wish I was born with a lot of money, too. I was born with great parents, okay? And so I don’t think he really can relate with people who live paycheck to paycheck. That’s why I don’t think there’s urgency on his part.”

BuzzFeed published an explosive allegation that the president of the United States ordered his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to lie to congressional committees investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Specifically, in a news story sourced to two anonymous law-enforcement officials said to be “involved in an investigation of the matter,” the site reported that Special Counsel Robert Mueller had learned, though multiple witnesses and documents, of President Trump’s alleged instruction to Cohen; subsequently, upon being confronted by prosecutors, Cohen had supposedly admitted that Trump gave the order.

As a rule, Mueller does not comment on press reports about his probe. Yet, in a highly unusual move Friday night, the prosecutor refuted the story by reporters Jason Leopold and Anthony Cormier. Through a spokesman, Mueller asserted:

BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the special counsel’s office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s congressional testimony are not accurate.

Clearly, Mueller did the right thing….

The mother of a boy filmed harassing a Native American man along with his friends at a rally in Washington DC has blamed “black Muslims” for the confrontation, without providing any evidence for the claim.

The teenager was among a group of students wearing Make America Great Again (Maga) hats who were criticised for taunting the musician Nathan Phillips, surrounding him and jeering and chanting “build the wall, build the wall”.

But his mother claimed “black Muslims” had been harassing the group of Donald Trump supporters from the private, all-male Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky.

In an email to the news website heavy.com the mother of a Covington Catholic student, believed to be the boy prominently featured in footage of the incident, wrote: “Did you hear the names of the people were calling these boys? It was shameful. Did you witness the black Muslims yelling profanities and video taping to get something to further your narrative of hatred??

“Did you know that this ‘man’ came up to this one boy and drummed in his face?”

The encounter took place following an anti-abortion March for Life rally in the capital on Friday.

Footage of the confrontation involving Mr Phillips, reportedly a veteran of the Vietnam war and an elder of Nebraska’s Omaha tribe, was shared online by organisers of an indigenous peoples’ march that also took place on the same day.

A separate video showed a group of black men standing near the scene of the confrontation, arguing aggressively with the Maga hat-wearing students. It is unclear to which religious group the men belonged, but they could be heard quoting passages from the Old Testament.

Extended footage also depicts the apparent leader of the religious group hurling homophobic slurs at the students. “That’s Make America Great Again, a bunch of child-molesting f****ts”, he is heard to say. Another member of the group – who seems to be the one filming – is recorded calling the children “dirty-ass crackers” and “racist bastards”. Approaching the students, he continues loudly: “Look at all these dusty-ass crackers with that racist garbage on.”

Amid claims online that Mr Phillips had himself participated in harassing the boys, the same video shows the moment he arrived at the scene of the confrontation. The 64-year-old can be seen interposing himself between the two groups, apparently ending a few yards away from both, before the students approach him and begin chanting.

Another separate clip appears to show further abuse directed at the boys. A man – not Mr Phillips – can be heard to say: “You white people go back to Europe, this is not your land.”

The apparent intimidation of Mr Phillips, meanwhile, has prompted a torrent of outrage. Actress and activist Alyssa Milano tweeted that the footage “brought me to tears”, while actor Chris Evans said the students’ actions were “appalling” and “shameful”.

Democratic congresswoman Deb Haaland, a member of New Mexico’s Laguna Pueblo tribe, tweeted that the students had shown “blatant hate, disrespect, and intolerance”.

Ruth Buffalo, a North Dakota state lawmaker and member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation tribe, said she was saddened to see students showing disrespect to an elder who is also a military veteran.

“The behaviour shown in that video is just a snapshot of what indigenous people have faced and are continuing to face,” said Ms Buffalo.

Both the Catholic high school and the Diocese of Covington have apologised and condemned the actions of the students.

“We extend our deepest apologies to Mr Phillips. This behaviour is opposed to the church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

“The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion,” the statement said.

Covington Catholic High School has since closed its Facebook page.

“When I was there singing, I heard them saying, ‘Build that wall, build that wall,’” Mr Phillips said, as he wiped away tears in a video later posted on Instagram. “This is indigenous lands. We’re not supposed to have walls here. We never did.”

In an interview with the Detroit Free Press, Mr Phillips said he believed the Covington students were “in the process of attacking” the religious group, but video footage does not appear to bear out that claim.
