Trump and GOP shouldn’t fall for the trap of answering for Christopher Hasson – Washington Examiner

Any call for President Trump or Republicans to comment on the lunatic Coast Guard officer arrested last week should be seen for what it is: an attempt to force the White House and the GOP to own this guy, and therefore his white supremacist ideology, as an issue.

Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the cable show where five different people take turns saying the exact same thing for three hours, an on-screen graphic blared, “TRUMP SILENT ON PLOT TO KILL CRITICS.”

“Not a word from Trump,” huffed show host Joe Scarborough. “Not a word from [GOP Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell. Not a word from [GOP House Minority Leader] Kevin McCarthy. Not a word from the Justice Department. That is pathetic.”

This is precisely what happened during the 2016 election with David Duke. Without having said a word about the long-forgotten Klansman, the media and Democrats demanded that Trump account for Duke’s racism. But why should Trump have had to answer for someone whose company or association he had never sought?

Take Al Sharpton, Scarborough’s MSNBC colleague. To this day, he has not apologized for his role in the Tawana Brawley hoax. That incident of a false rape report in the 1980s inflamed national racial divisions in a way rarely seen since. (The 2006 Duke Lacrosse case, which also turned out to be fake, is probably the only similar case from recent years.) Sharpton played a starring role in two major incidents of anti-Semitic violence during his career in New York City, one of which resulted in seven deaths.

Yet, every four years, every Democratic presidential candidate treks to New York to kiss Sharpton’s ring for the nomination — Sen. Kamala Harris of California is the latest. It would be far fairer to make any of them answer for Sharpton than it is to expect Trump to answer for some random crazy person he’s unfamiliar with and has never met. But not one Democrat is ever asked to account for Sharpton’s conduct.

Liberals might argue that Trump waived this defense on the Coast Guard maniac by weighing in this week on actor Jussie Smollett’s apparent hoax hate crime. But Trump was thrown into that by Smollett himself when he blamed the crime on the president’s supporters.

The notion that the Coast Guard crazy, Lt. Christopher Hasson, plotted to target Trump’s “critics” for violence is a ruse. Court documents don’t point to any coherent political alliance or philosophy on Hasson’s part, outside of a nebulous hate for “liberalist/globalist ideology.”

Messages recovered by prosecutors from Hasson’s computer show that his primary motivation was white supremacism. He was “dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth,” and he was looking for a catalyst that would make his violent fantasy come alive — namely, a mass riot pitting law enforcement against left-wing groups like the Black Lives Matter movement.

Hasson was thinking up ways to “provoke” nationwide conflict in order to inflict “complete destruction,” according to prosecutors. When you read that portion of the court filings, it makes clear why he would then search the Internet for, among other things, “what if trump illegally impeached” and “civil war if trump impeached.” It’s not because Hasson was inspired by Trump. It’s because he saw heated political conflict as a means to his unrealized end. He wanted to see Trump impeached because he hoped civil unrest would follow.

The evidence suggests Hasson was first and foremost a white supremacist who looked to a 2011 terrorist attack in Norway for inspiration as to how he might carry out a similar one here. He wrote in an email draft: “During unrest target both sides to increase tension. In other words provoke gov/police to over react which should help to escalate violence. BLM protests or other left crap would be ideal to incite to violence.”

He also fantasized about possibly becoming a sheriff or city mayor and of learning chemistry, if that gives you any insight into his mental stability.

Hasson is a crazy person and a white supremacist, in that order.

No evidence has tied Hasson to Republicans or Trump. Why should they be expected to answer for him?

Here’s how Congress can still deny Trump money for his wall – Washington Examiner

President Trump declared a national emergency with the express goal of circumventing Congress’s constitutional power of the purse and getting more than the $1.375 billion that lawmakers were willing to give him for his wall.

But even Trump’s declaration of an emergency does not hand him the keys to an unlimited slush fund. Indeed, as Roll Call explained on Thursday night, Trump will still need congressional approval to access as much as one-third of the funds that he had planned on using for the wall. For example, the Trump administration had planned to pull some $2.5 billion from Pentagon counterdrug funds. Although Trump is allowed to use that money under federal law, he can only spend money that’s actually in the account and, right now, there’s only $85 million there.

To make up the difference, the Defense Department is likely to try to reprogram money to the counterdrug fund, which could then be immediately pulled and used for the wall. But any attempt to reprogram the funds would run headlong into Congress.

That leaves Trump right back where he started — needing Congress to give him money for his wall.

Congress should not play along, lest it lend implicit approval to a president’s desire to simply cut Congress out of the picture when he doesn’t get what he wants. The wall’s merits aside, no lawmaker of any party should support the president’s efforts to override Congress by freely transferring funds for him to plunder. In fact, far from bending over backwards to meet the president’s will, Congress should be working to take back the power that it has previously ceded to the executive.

Conservatives will use Jussie Smollett to hide the truth about hate crimes: They can’t – Salon

The arrest of “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett for allegedly faking a hate crime against himself arrived like an extra Christmas for Donald Trump and his devoted propagandists.

For years, Trump has been mainstreaming overtly racist rhetoric and encouraging political violence. As we should all remember, he even said that those who marched with violent neo-Nazis in Charlottesville were “fine people,” and defending the Saudi crown prince who likely ordered a murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a legal resident of the U.S. Right-wing punditry have gone along enthusiastically, with Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham in particular gradually increasing the level of white nationalist talking points and themes on their top-rated prime-time Fox News shows.

That all this would lead to an escalation of hate crimes and domestic terrorism was entirely predictable, of course, but that wasn’t likely to slow down Trump or his media allies. Instead, the focus has been on minimizing and deflecting these issues, largely by insinuating that liberals are exaggerating or even making things up when they point to the violent consequences. There’s also the ever-popular “both sides do it” argument, carrying the implication that, if anything, right-wingers are the real victims here.

So when Smollett was accused of faking a hate crime — and apparently seeking to blame it on Trump supporters — the giddiness on the right was palpable. This single case, which has mesmerized the national media, looked like a perfect way to discredit the vast majority of all-too-real hate crimes and bolster the claim that liberals are just making things up. For years to come, right-wing trolls will have a weapon they can use to blast their way out of any serious discussion about the problem of hate crimes.

But before the right had a chance to make Smollett a household name to the Fox News viewership — who quite likely had never heard of him — we got a massive reminder that, oh yeah, right-wing terrorism is a real and urgent problem, A Coast Guard lieutenant named Christopher Hasson was arrested in Maryland after federal authorities discovered he was planning a massive right wing terrorist attack. Hasson had amassed a major weapons cache, had planned to murder a number of Democratic politicians and mainstream media figures who have been hate objects for Trump and the conservative media in recent years.

This arrest was a cold reminder of why it’s so difficult for conservative pundits to minimize or deny right-wing terrorism: There’s just too much of it to ignore.

Angry at having their Smollett-driven denialist narrative disrupted like this, some conservative pundits lashed out. Ingraham complained that “the media has jumped on the story of that whack-job Coast Guard lieutenant who wanted to murder Democrat politicians,” which she considered a distraction from the far more important news of a black TV actor story.

At National Review, Kevin Williamson dismissed “the predictable response from the Left” of bringing up Hasson by arguing that since Hasson “is going away for a long time, possibly forever,” he’s not sure what the “Left” is even trying to say.

Williamson is arguing in bad faith, as is his habit. He knows full well what the “Left” is pointing out: Smollett’s alleged crime does not in any way, shape or form invalidate concerns about hate crimes or exonerate Trump and his supporters for sowing rhetoric that encourages hate crimes. It is also worth noting that Smollett has also been arrested and could indeed end up doing time, which makes Williamson’s “you can’t talk about the larger political implications if the person is arrested” argument almost comically incoherent.

One would think that even people suffering from moral myopia as severe as that afflicting Williamson and Ingraham would stop short of suggesting that it’s somehow worse to fake an assault on yourself and file a false police report than to plan a massive campaign of political assassination. But then again, these are folks who don’t seem inspired to dial down the bigoted rhetoric even when they know perfectly well that right-wing terrorism is on the rise.

Hasson’s reported plans and his apparent white supremacist obsessions fit into a larger pattern that has become numbingly familiar. In 2018 alone, there was a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that killed 11 people, a Trump-loving bomber who tried to murder various journalists and celebrities as well as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, a self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen” who murdered four people at a Waffle House in Nashville, a Kentucky white supremacist who killed two black people at a grocery store, and a misogynist who murdered two women at a yoga studio. The school shooting in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people died may be another example, as the shooter appears to have had alt-right obsessions himself.

A new report released just this week by the Southern Poverty Law Center shows that the number of hate groups in the U.S. has risen by 30 percent in the past few years, rising to over 1,000 groups.

But that statistic by itself underrates the seriousness of the problem. Nowadays, white supremacists and other possibly violent bigots are less likely to organize formally through groups like the KKK or the Traditionalist Worker Party. Instead, most white supremacists are loosely organized online. James Fields, the man who killed Heather Heyer with his car at the Charlottesville riot in 2017, is atypical in that he was aligned with a formal group. As the above examples show, many or most hate crimes or right-wing terrorist plots involve individuals who self-radicalize online before they commit crimes.

That fact implicates Trump and his allies in conservative media even more in the rise of right-wing terrorism than would have been likely in the past. Social media researcher Zeynep Tufekci has detailed how people who watch a video by, say, Carlson or Ingraham on YouTube are generally then presented with more videos that are far more hardcore and conspiratorial. Just by clicking “next video,” it’s only a few steps from hearing Carlson complain about how “elites” are using “immigration” to change “demographics” to hearing an overt white supremacist make the same argument but in language that overtly blames Jews and uses racial slurs or terms like “white genocide.”

Everyone in conservative media has a choice. They could stop offering White Nationalism Lite segments on Fox News. They could stop supporting Trump. They could call Trump out when he maligns journalists as the “enemy of the people,” characterizes immigrants as criminals, and obsesses over the supposed ingratitude of black athletes who protest against racism or police brutality. They could, in other words, stop feeding an atmosphere of bigotry and hate that leads to more hate crimes.

But they don’t want to. Instead, they want to cling to Smollett’s alleged misdeed, which was stupid and selfish but thankfully highly unusual, and did not seriously endanger anyone except himself, as a way to deflect criticism away from their own immoral behavior. But the problem of right-wing terrorism in America has become so severe, sadly, that even the most frantic hand-waving from conservative pundits cannot hide the truth.

Grilled by children, Feinstein tries to teach lesson in politics – NBC News

U.S. Sen Dianne Feinstein, D-California, isn’t backing the Green New Deal, and she wasn’t shy about letting a group who does support it know it — even if they are children.

A group of schoolchildren visited the senator at her San Francisco office Friday and urged her to get on board with the renewable energy legislation. But the conversation quickly turned into somewhat of a confrontation, and Feinstein has been criticized online for the tone she took. Edited video of the 85-year-old lecturing more than a dozen kids went viral Friday.

One girl implored the senator to back the Green New Deal and argued that the government can afford it. “We have tons of money going to military,” the girl told the lawmaker.

“I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” Feinstein said. “I know what I’m doing. You come in here and you say it has to be my way or the highway. I don’t respond to that.”

The senator called Friday’s interaction “a spirited discussion.”

“Unfortunately, it was a brief meeting but I want the children to know they were heard loud and clear,” she said.

Her supporters said a longer video of the confrontation depicts Feinstein in a kinder light. In that clip, she sends aides off to get copies of an environmental bill she’s backing in the U.S. Senate. “If you have a problem with it you can let me know,” she told the group.

Of the Green New Deal, Feinstein says, “Well the reasons why I can’t, ’cause there’s no way to pay for it.”

The children were organized by a group, Sunrise Movement, that’s backing the House legislation that was introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass.

The House legislation aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and 100 percent renewable energy sources in the United States by 2030. Feinstein said it has no Republican support in the Senate, making in a nonstarter there.

“That resolution will not pass the senate,” Feinstein told the children.

Venezuela crisis: Colombia border points closed amid aid stand-off – BBC News

Venezuela has said that its border with Colombia has been partially closed, shortly after opposition leader Juan Guaidó defied a travel ban to cross it.

Vice President Delcy Rodriguez tweeted to say the “total, temporary closure” was due to serious threats against the country’s sovereignty and security.

Tensions have been rising over a row about the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Two people were killed by Venezuelan security forces on Saturday near the border with Brazil.

The violence was condemned by the United States government, which said in a statement: “The Venezuelan military must allow humanitarian aid to peacefully enter the country. The world is watching.”

Mr Guaidó, the leader of the country’s opposition-dominated National Assembly, last month declared himself the country’s interim leader.

He has since won the backing of dozens of nations, including the US. He has called the rule of President Nicolas Maduro constitutionally illegitimate, claiming that Mr Maduro’s re-election in 2018 was marred by voting irregularities.

What happened on Friday?

Hundreds of tonnes of humanitarian aid sitting just outside Venezuela’s borders have become a flashpoint between Mr Guaidó and President Maduro.

Mr Maduro has so far refused to allow the aid, which includes food and medicine, to cross over into Venezuela. Mr Guaidó has vowed that hundreds of thousands of volunteers will help bring it in on Saturday.

On Friday, rival concerts were held just 300m (980ft) away from each other on either side of the Venezuelan-Colombia border.

Mr Guaidó unexpectedly turned up at Venezuela Aid Live in Cucuta, organised by British businessman Richard Branson, on Friday.

He was greeted there by the presidents of Colombia, Chile and Paraguay – three of the nations who have recognised the 35-year-old lawmaker as interim president.

He alleged that he was able to cross over on Friday with the help of the Venezuelan armed forces. The claim is significant as President Nicolás Maduro has been able to retain power largely because of his military support.

Hours after his appearance, the announcement about the closure of bridges in Tachira state was made.

It follows a similar announcement made on Thursday about the closure of the border with Brazil – where another aid collection is being raised.

Violent clashes broke out there on Friday morning after members of an indigenous community reportedly confronted Venezuelan troops in the southern village of Kumarakapay.

Witnesses said that troops opened fire on individuals who tried to block a road to stop preventing military vehicles from passing.

Human rights campaigners said soldiers shot and killed two people and wounded 15 others.

A spokeswoman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he had a meeting with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza on Friday in New York, in which he urged authorities to refrain from using lethal force against demonstrators.

Why is the aid delivery contentious?

Economic conditions have deteriorated rapidly since President Maduro took power in 2013.

The UN says about three million people have fled the country over the last few years.

Hyperinflation has caused the cost of essentials to soar, leaving many unable to afford basics like food and medicine.

Mr Guaidó has said the aid deliveries are necessary to stop Venezuelans dying. He has vowed to get his supporters to mobilise en-masse to get it in on Saturday.

‘Deeply uncertain’ day ahead

This is the day Venezuela’s opposition has been waiting for. A day that will test the loyalty of the country’s armed forces towards Nicolas Maduro and determine his future.

Lorries laden with aid are expected to set off from both Colombia and Brazil and attempt to cross the border. A ship carrying aid is also travelling from Puerto Rico.

Throughout Venezuela, people will gather at military barracks to ask soldiers for their help in the aid effort.

Until now, senior officers have remained loyal to Mr Maduro – but with pressure being heaped on them to help the Venezuelan people, will they listen to their leader or change sides, support Juan Guaido and open the borders? These next few days are deeply uncertain.

President Maduro denies there is any crisis and has branded the aid plans a US-orchestrated show.

Performers at his rival concert on Friday performed in front of a backdrop that said #TrumpHandsoffVenezuela, the AFP news agency reports.

The US President has led the effort to recognise Mr Guaidó as president, and has implemented economic sanctions to put pressure on President Maduro’s government.

At a speech earlier this week, he urged the Venezuelan military to switch sides and abandon their support of the president.

He has repeatedly reiterated that “all options are open” in regards to the US response to the unfolding crisis.
