Former Trump administration officials are concerned about the president’s behavior in recent days, speculating that his increasingly erratic outbursts are linked to private worries that a recession in the US could torpedo his chances of reelection in 2020, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

In recent weeks Trump has generated almost daily controversies, several of which came to a head this week.

The past four days have seen approvingly share a tweet where he’s described as the “second coming” of God, attack Denmark’s prime minister over her refusal to consider selling Greenland, and question the loyalty of Jews who vote for the Democratic Party.

Here’s a snapshot of the president’s comments so far this week:

  • On Wednesday, Trump described Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen as “nasty,” having previously canceled a visit to Denmark after she dismissed his proposal to buy Greenland as “absurd.” Trump later attacked Denmark, a NATO ally, on Twitter over its military spending.
  • Earlier Wednesday, Trump quoted a right-wing conspiracy theorist who claimed that Israeli Jews saw him as the “second coming” and the “King of Israel.” In remarks to reporters at the White House later in the day, Trump described himself as the “chosen one” in the trade war against China.
  • On Tuesday, Trump used an anti-Semitic trope in questioning the loyalty of Jews who voted for Democrats. He doubled down on the view in remarks to reporters Wednesday.

The unnamed former officials who spoke with The Times said these outbursts were most likely linked to fears from Trump that the US economy was weakening and might slip into recession in 2020, which could damage his chances of reelection.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

Several reports in recent days have suggested that economic data indicating a recession may be looming has rattled Trump — who has based his case for reelection on the strong performance of the US economy during his presidency.

On Tuesday, Trump told reporters the US economy was strong and recession was not on the horizon, but he has privately expressed worries about the threat of a recession, according to The Washington Post.

Trump also said on Tuesday that an economic downturn, if it did happen, would be a price worth paying for winning his trade war with China.

But even as some link Trump’s recent behavior to recession fears, some analysts believe the president has simply been acting in accordance with his long-established playbook of fostering conflict with institutions he has portrayed as controlled by elites exploiting the American people — such as the Democratic Party or NATO.

Denmark is a close American ally deserving of far better from President Trump. The American people, who expect their president will put U.S. interests before his own ego, also deserve better.

I say this in light of insults Trump directed at the Danish prime minister on Wednesday after she labeled his efforts to buy Greenland as “absurd.” Trump’s outburst follows his similarly petulant tweet on Tuesday that “based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.”

Trump might whine about Frederiksen’s language, but considering the Danish political furor that Trump’s Greenland flippancy produced, her response was understandable. He should have let it pass. Instead, Trump has wrecked a two-day September visit to Denmark for which, Frederiksen noted, “preparations were well under way.” The logistical complexities of a presidential visit are huge.

Denmark’s frustration is understandable, and Trump’s disrespect to Denmark is both idiotic and immoral.

Idiotic, because Denmark is a committed and capable ally. The Danish military is well-trained and supported by increasingly advanced capabilities. Danish maneuver infantry, air strike, cyber, and anti-ship forces are especially impressive. They attest to a nation that intends to fight alongside keystone NATO forces if Russia ever attacks the alliance. The same cannot be said of many other European powers, including Belgium, Germany, and perhaps soon, Italy. But Trump’s words will only spark Danish public anger and empower left-wing politicians who want to weaken our alliance. The stakes here are potentially great. What, for example, if Denmark now chucks the U.S. military out of Greenland? That would greatly reduce our ability to detect and defend against Chinese and Russian nuclear attacks.

Trump’s words are also immoral.

Unlike many U.S. allies, Denmark has fought alongside us in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Seven Danes gave their lives in Iraq. In Afghanistan, 43 Danes died, and hundreds more were wounded. There, Denmark chose to operate in the restive Helmand Province, taking the fight to the enemy. We should thank Danes for giving their sons’ and daughters’ lives for our common cause.

The president swore an oath to uphold American interests. His gratuitously harsh words toward Denmark do the exact opposite.

Anderson Cooper, one of left-leaning CNN’s advertised straight news hosts, had no issue voicing his opinion on Ivanka Trump Wednesday night.

During the opening monologue of his show, Cooper went after Ivanka in the wake of President Trump’s comments questioning the loyalty of Jewish people who vote for Democrats.

“It should be noted that throughout history, calling Jews ‘disloyal’ has been a common anti-Semitic trope — has been a pretext to exclude Jews or take their businesses or put them in ghettos or expel them or expel them from schools or exterminate them,” Cooper began.

The “Anderson Cooper 360” host quickly pivoted to the president’s daughter, who is Jewish.

MSNBC’S CHUCK TODD RIPS TRUMP’S ‘UN-AMERICAN,’ SHAMES GOP FOR ‘ENABLING’ HIM

“Ivanka Trump must be very proud of her dad tonight,” Cooper said. “And you can probably just watch for an Ivanka leak in the coming days about how she tried to talk her father, you know, to change that kind of language. It’s a classic Ivanka move.”

He then mocked the “flip-flop flip” on the Trump administration’s shifting stance on cutting the payroll tax and pursuing universal background checks on guns, suggesting that voters will think that the president is “either unstable,” “not a genius,” “has no idea what they are saying,” or “all of the above.”

“Even if his words mean nothing, he is signing laws and making decisions that impact all our lives, our futures. It may seem funny at times, but it’s not. It is pathetic,” Cooper concluded.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A cook at a Los Angeles-area hotel was arrested after he allegedly threatened a mass shooting and stockpiled guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition at his home, police said Wednesday.

Rodolfo Montoya, 37, was taken into custody Tuesday at his Huntington Beach home, police said.

Montoya was upset over a work-related human resources issue when he told a co-worker at the Long Beach Marriott on Monday that “he was going to shoot up fellow employees and people coming into the hotel,” Police Chief Robert Luna said.

The employee told the hotel’s general manager, who contacted police.

A search of Montoya’s Huntington Beach home turned up assault-style rifles and other weapons, dozens of high-capacity magazines and hundreds of bullets, police said.

Montoya “had clear plans, intent and the means to carry out an act of violence that may have resulted in a mass casualty incident,” Luna said.

At the news conference, Luna thanked Imran Ahmed, the hotel’s general manager, for calling authorities.

“Sir, you saved many lives, not only of your employees but any customers that may have been at the Marriott when this guy decided to show up and carry out his threat,” Luna said.

The chief said Montoya didn’t appear to have any criminal history that would have prevented him from legally buying guns, although some of the weapons and high-capacity magazines at his home may be illegal.

Montoya was held on suspicion of making, possessing and distributing assault weapons and making criminal threats. He was held on $500,000 bail. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he has an attorney.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee, who made fighting climate change the central theme of his presidential campaign, announced Wednesday night that he is ending his bid for the 2020 Democratic nomination. Inslee announced his decision on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” admitting it’s become clear that he won’t win.

Inslee has kept open the option of running for a third gubernatorial term throughout his presidential campaign, but didn’t immediately say what his political plans were.

“This is sort of the bookends of my campaign,” Inslee said on MSNBC. “We started seeing that climate change had to be the number one job of the United States. I felt very good saying that the first days of my campaign. I feel very good saying that now. And the reason is this is has just become more urgent — a billion tons of ice melted in Greenland the other day. But we also have had so many people that I have met who are inspiring, who want us to act, who have helped me. We have had 130,000 people help me in this campaign.”

“But it has become clear that I am not going to be carrying the ball, I am not going to be the president, so I’m withdrawing tonight from the race,” he added.

Inslee, 68, is the latest Democrat to end his presidential bid, following U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, who withdrew from the race last month. And former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper dropped his bid just last week.

In an email to supporters, Inslee said he would have more to say about his next steps “in the days ahead.”  Some signs point to a third run for governor. That election will also be held in November 2020.

“I can assure you that I will continue to lead, to demand bold action, and to do everything in my power to ensure the fight to defeat climate change stays at the top of the national agenda.” Inslee wrote. At the inception of his campaign, Inslee had promised to keep climate change in the national conversation, saying that in previous election cycles the issue had received “little attention” from the candidates, the Democratic Party or the media.

“Many of the campaigns started with little attention to climate, but since our campaign began, we’ve seen almost every serious candidate put out a climate plan,” his email said.  “Most importantly, we have introduced a detailed and comprehensive policy blueprint for bold climate action and transformation to a clean energy economy.”

Inslee also unsuccessfully fought with the Democratic National Committee early in the summer over holding a debate specifically focused on climate change.

Several fellow Democratic candidates weighed in on the governor’s decision to withdraw.  Senator Bernie Sanders wrote in a tweet, “Congratulations to @JayInslee on his impactful campaign to bring the climate crisis to the forefront of the national conversation.”

While Inslee had qualified for the first two presidential debates this summer, he struggled to gain traction in the crowded Democratic field and was falling short of the requirements needed to appear on two high-profile stages next month: the third DNC debate in Houston and a CNN town hall focused on climate change, Inslee’s key issue.

He had recently hit one of the markers — 130,000 unique donors. But he had yet to reach 2% in any poll and would have needed to hit that level of support in four qualifying polls.

Inslee is a former congressman and served as Democratic Governors Association chairman in 2018, when the party flipped seven Republican-held gubernatorial seats. He kicked off his campaign in March in Seattle, standing in front of a blue-and-green campaign logo with an arc of the Earth, declaring climate change the nation’s most pressing issue.

Inslee was a champion for the clean energy industry in Congress and wrote a book on the topic. And he’s pushed for state policies to curb greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming. On the day he announced his presidential bid, the state Senate passed a key piece of his legislative climate agenda, a measure that seeks to eliminate fossil fuels like natural gas and coal from the state’s electricity supply by 2045.

The measure, later passed by the House and signed by Inslee in May, made Washington the fourth in the nation to establish a mandate to provide carbon-free electricity by a targeted date. A few additional states have enacted legislation related to clean energy requirements since May, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

In addition to pushing for a dedicated debate on climate change, Inslee’s campaign has been rolling out climate proposals, including calling for the nation’s entire electrical grid and all new vehicles and buildings to be carbon pollution free by 2030. He’s also proposed a clean break between the federal government and the fossil fuel industry, ending tax breaks for oil companies and banning all drilling and extraction on federal lands and beneath federal waters.

Inslee released his sixth and final climate proposal, a plan focused on agriculture and farmers, hours before he announced he was dropping out of the race.

In a video released Tuesday on Twitter, Inslee thanked supporters for helping him pass the 130,000 individual donor mark.

“Together we have put the climate crisis front and center in the 2020 race,” he said. “And thanks to you, every candidate knows they have to have a robust plan to defeat the climate crisis.”

Governors in Washington state aren’t subject to term limits, though most haven’t served more than two terms. The last three-term governor in Washington was Republican Governor Dan Evans, who served from 1965 until 1977.

While the filing deadline for the state’s 2020 elections isn’t until next May, three Democrats have already signaled they will run for governor if Inslee doesn’t: Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz and King County Executive Dow Constantine. The political dominos continue with Democratic candidates lining up to run for attorney general and lands commissioner if Ferguson and Franz end up not seeking reelection to their posts.

A few Republicans have already announced plans to run for governor, including Phil Fortunato, a state senator, and Loren Culp, the police chief of Republic, in eastern Washington. A Republican has not occupied the governor’s office in more than three decades.

HBO host Bill Maher ridiculed Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., on Wednesday, suggesting the freshman congresswoman was childlike after she called for a boycott of his TV show.

“Some people have one move only: boycott. Cancel. Make-go-away,” Maher wrote, apparently echoing phrases toddlers use. “But here’s the thing, the house voted 318 to 17 to condemn the movement, including 93% of Dems. Does Tlaib want to boycott 93% of her own party?”

Maher’s tweet appeared to refer to a July vote in which the House overwhelmingly approved a measure opposing the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.

MARC THIESSEN: IF OMAR AND TLAIB CAN BOYCOTT ISRAEL, WHY CAN’T ISRAEL BOYCOTT THEM?

Among the 17 who opposed the resolution were Reps. Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., both of whom Israel blocked from entering the country due to their positions on BDS.

More from Media

Omar specifically pushed a resolution affirming the right to boycott Israel and both of the congresswomen used a travel itinerary that appeared to deny Israel’s existence as a sovereign nation.

After Tlaib received permission to visit her grandmother in the region, she balked at the condition that she wouldn’t promote boycotts against Israel — something she previously agreed to in a letter to the Israeli government.

Amid the controversy, Maher fiercely criticized the BDS movement on Friday. “BDS a bull—- purity test by people who want to appear woke but actually slept through history class,” he said.

TRUMP RIPS DEMS’ EMOTIONAL PRESS CONFERENCE ON ISRAEL: ‘I DON’T BUY REP. TLAIB’S TEARS’

“It’s predicated on this notion … I think it’s very shallow thinking that the Jews in Israel are mostly white and Palestinians are mostly brown, so they must be innocent and correct and the Jews must be wrong,” he said.

“As if the occupation came right out of the blue, that this ‘completely peaceful people’ found themselves occupied. Forget about the intifadas and the suicide bombings and the rockets and how many wars.”

Tlaib responded on Saturday by comparing Maher’s commentary to tactics used to block protests against apartheid in South Africa.

Early Tuesday morning, three women filed separate lawsuits against the estate of Jeffrey Epstein, whom federal prosecutors charged with sex trafficking just weeks before his suicide on August 10. Their allegations, which include sexual assault and coercion, closely mirror those lodged by prior accusers.

But one plaintiff, who remains anonymous, leveled a novel accusation: The wealthy financier, with the help of an unnamed attorney, forced her to enter a fraudulent marriage with another woman in his orbit.

The plaintiff, identified in legal filings as “Katlyn Doe,” described the second woman as a “a non-United States citizen and recruiter of females for Jeffrey Epstein” and said their marriage was designed to ensure the woman would continue to work for Epstein in the US as part of “a complex system of individuals … for the purpose of harming teenage girls through sexual exploitation, abuse and trafficking.”

But these aren’t the only allegations of a fraudulent marriage induced by Epstein: Business Insider has learned that at least two other women in Epstein’s entourage were married to each other, and a source familiar with the situation said they were directed to get married by the sex offender. As with Katlyn Doe’s accusations, one of these women was a noncitizen that Epstein may have wanted to maintain access to. The marriage has not been previously reported. The source said that Epstein orchestrated at least three such marriages.

Allegations that could change the trajectory of the investigation

The allegations could alter the trajectory of the Epstein investigation. Doe’s claims suggest, after all, that Epstein and his associates conducted an international human trafficking operation as recently as 2014 — six years after he pleaded guilty to state charges of solicitation of a minor, and more than a decade after the alleged crimes on which his federal charges were based.

The marriage identified by Business Insider took place in 2013. One woman was a U.S. citizen, the other was from Eastern Europe. While it’s unclear why exactly Epstein directed them to wed, a source with direct knowledge of the arrangement said both women were romantically involved with the multi-millionaire sex offender.

There are similarities between their marriage and the one described in Doe’s complaint. Beyond their participants’ connection to Epstein, both took place in 2013 and involved a citizen and a non-citizen. But other details, such as the age of the brides and the dates of their respective divorces, clearly show there were two different marriages, between two different pairs of women. What they all had in common was Epstein.

Both women have been photographed with Epstein or leaving his home

Business Insider is not naming the women because Epstein was accused of sex trafficking, and they may be victims. We are withholding significant details from this story in order to protect their identities. Both women are adults.

Both women, who have since divorced, have public links to Epstein, including published photographs of them either together with the secretive financier or entering or leaving his five-story mansion on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Multiple sources who knew them said, and a review of public records showed, that they did not present themselves outwardly as spouses.

Both were members of a coterie of attractive young women — many of them from Russia and Eastern Europe — who frequently accompanied Epstein and his friends to events and traveled widely on his fleet of private jets, according to a source familiar with the arrangement.

One of the women, an American, has introduced herself to people as a member Epstein’s household staff but was in fact a girlfriend, according to the source. A different source recalled that Epstein once purchased this woman a car valued at more than $50,000. She has been captured by a tabloid photographer while entering and exiting Epstein’s mansion.

Both women lived in a building owned by Epstein’s brother

According to public records, the American has lived in a 16-story condominium on East 66th St. in Manhattan since the mid-2000s. The same address turns up repeatedly in records concerning Epstein and his circle of associates, including his attorney and the coconspirators named in the infamous nonprosecution agreement that allowed Epstein to escape federal prosecution in 2008.

Epstein’s brother, Mark Epstein, owns most of the units in the building through his real-estate company. The building has been described in court records and published reports as a location where Jeffrey Epstein housed young women. (Mark Epstein has denied any knowledge of his brother’s activities.)

According to New York City marriage records, the American was granted a marriage license in October 2013 to another woman in Epstein’s orbit from Eastern Europe.

Like her ex-wife, the Eastern European has been photographed leaving and entering Epstein’s mansion by tabloid newspapers. A separate set of paparazzi photos taken by a news agency in New York shows her and Epstein walking down the street together.

She has a professional degree from a US university and a professional license. The address on her license is the same address used by one of Epstein’s companies.

An intensely private Eastern European

In conversations with Business Insider, her professional-school classmates described her as an intensely private woman who rarely discussed her personal life with others. At the same time, her manner and appearance made her stand out in certain ways.

Three classmates described her as “Eastern European.” According to the professional school’s yearbook, she previously attended a college in Eastern Europe.

One former peer said she often wore expensive brand clothing that many graduate students would struggle to afford. In colder months, she donned a white fur-trimmed jacket that retails for around $900. One day, the same classmate said, she mentioned traveling back from Miami, without explaining why she was there or who she was with.

None of the classmates Business Insider contacted recalled any indication that she was married to a woman. However, most of them remembered hearing, through the campus grapevine, about her relationship with an older and much wealthier man. Three had hazy memories of seeing and discussing photos of her with the same man in a newspaper or on a website. Shown a photo of Epstein, one said it was the same man they had seen photographed with the classmate.

It’s unclear what came first: The rumors about her relationship with Epstein, or the photos her classmates saw in a newspaper or online. In any case, their recollections, combined with the photos, suggest she was involved with Epstein when she attended and graduated from the professional school.

The women divorced just 2 months ago

The source familiar with the arrangement told Business Insider that the Eastern European is not a US citizen and that she came to the US originally on a student visa. Business Insider was not able to independently verify her citizenship status. But according to public records, she was first issued a Social Security number sometime between 2009 and 2011, when she would have been in her late teens and early 20s. Most natural-born US citizens are issued Social Security numbers at birth. As a full-time student from a foreign country, she would have been required to obtain a Social Security number if she wanted to earn income.

Court records show that the women were granted an uncontested petition for dissolution of marriage in June, seven months after the Miami Herald published its blockbuster investigation into Epstein’s crimes and weeks before his arrest by FBI agents in July.

‘These were victims too. They were psychologically manipulated.’

Two sources who knew the American woman socially during the time public records indicate that she was married told Business Insider that she gave no outward indication of being in a committed relationship with a woman and that she dated men at the time. There is no public evidence that the women ever lived together; though public-record databases show that both are associated with the E. 66th St. building, they are linked to different units. Aside from their relationships to Epstein, the only public link between the two is a photo of the pair that the Eastern European posted to her Facebook account in 2015. The account has since been removed.

Neither woman responded to repeated phone calls, emails, and text messages seeking comment. An associate of one of the women agreed to pass a message to her; the associate declined to comment other than to say Epstein exercised some measure of control over the women.

“These were victims too,” the associate said before hanging up the phone. “They were psychologically manipulated.”

The FBI is seeking to interview the women

The source familiar with the arrangement said that FBI agents investigating Epstein were aware of the marriage and seeking to interview the two women.

Epstein had a long history of associating with young girls from Eastern Europe. He described his former girlfriend Nadia Marcinkova, who was accused by several of Epstein’s underage victims of participating in three-way sex acts with them, as a “Yugoslavian sex slave” that he had “purchased from her family” as a teenager, according to a 2006 police report. A former bookkeeper for MC2, the modeling agency in which Epstein was an investor, said in a 2010 deposition that Marcinkova was one of many young girls that MC2 brought to the US on model visas — paid for by Epstein — and housed in apartments on E. 66th St. Jean-Luc Brunel, MC2’s founder and a former friend of Epstein’s, has lived in an apartment in the building.

More recently, the New York Post quoted a visitor to Epstein’s mansion in 2016 saying that the home was filled with young women and that “half of them are from the former Soviet Union.” The newspaper linked Epstein to a Russian “procurer” named Peter Listerman, who has described himself as a “matchmaker” between wealthy clients and “gentle, romantic” women. Svetlana Pozhidaeva, a Russian former MC2 model whose women’s empowerment nonprofit was funded by Epstein, has also been photographed leaving his mansion and is linked to the E. 66th St. apartment building.

When the New York Times reporter James Stewart visited Epstein’s home in August 2018, he was greeted by “a young woman, her blond hair pulled back in a chignon, who greeted [him] with what sounded like an Eastern European accent.”

Entering into a marriage for the purposes of evading immigration laws is a crime — one that is commonly enforced in the context of sex-trafficking investigations. Last year, prosecutors in Minnesota convicted five people — and secured guilty pleas from 31 more — in a wide-ranging probe of a Thai sex-trafficking network that forced victims to enter into fraudulent marriages in order to gain residency. In May, the Anti-Trafficking Coordination Team — an interagency task force with members of the departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Labor — convicted a New Jersey woman on charges of forced labor and marriage fraud over her enslavement of a Sri Lankan woman. In 2012, prosecutors convicted three Belarusian nationals of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud. It is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Epstein’s attorney Reid Weingarten did not return an email, sent before his client’s suicide, seeking comment. A message left with the FBI’s New York press office was not returned.

“We are seeing more ransomware attacks because they work,” said Eli Sugarman, who directs the Hewlett Foundation’s cybersecurity program. “Cities are struggling to secure their complex and oftentimes outdated systems, and when attacked some choose to pay.” And, he noted, there is “notoriety that comes from each successful attack.”

When companies are hit with ransomware attacks they often cover it up. But cities cannot — as Atlanta learned in March 2018, in one of the most serious cyberattacks against an American municipality. Attackers demanded roughly $51,000 in Bitcoin but, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the city refused to pay the ransom. A document leaked to local news outlets showed that responding to the attack could cost the city $17 million. At the time, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms called the attack “a hostage situation,” and threat researchers working on the response blamed a hacking crew called SamSam.

Two Iranians, Faramarz Shahi Savandi and Mohammad Mehdi Shah Mansouri, were indicted on a charge in that attack last year, and there has been no major recurrence of SamSam attacks since. But new, more targeted malware has appeared.

The hackers who disabled Baltimore city computers in May demanded about $76,000 in Bitcoin to release the city’s files and allow employees to regain access to their computers. The mayor, Bernard Young, said the city would not pay the ransom, in part because there was no guarantee the files would be unlocked.

In the nearly four months since, the city has brought systems back online one by one, spending more than $5.3 million on computers and contractors brought on to help recover from the attack. An early estimate put the combination of lost revenue and city expenditures at more than $18 million.

Lester Davis, a spokesman for the mayor, said some lost revenue had been recouped and that it was impossible to quantify how much money the city lost by lack of productivity and missing payments. Baltimore issued water bills in recent weeks for the first time since the hacking, meaning many residents are facing payments three times as much as normal.

Five states — California, Connecticut, Michigan, Texas and Wyoming — appear to have laws that refer specifically to “ransomware” or computer extortion, although other states have laws that prohibit extortion and computer crimes such as malware or computer trespass, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee announced Wednesday night he’s “withdrawing” from the 2020 presidential race, as the Democrat said “it’s become clear” he didn’t have a shot at winning the primary.

The environmental activist had urged the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to host a debate centered exclusively on climate change — only to fail to qualify to meet polling thresholds needed to attend the party’s upcoming regularly scheduled debate, as well as a CNN town hall dedicated to global warming.

Inslee revealed his decision on MSNBC, saying it’s become clear that he won’t win. He has kept the option of running for a third term as governor open throughout his presidential campaign but didn’t immediately say what his political plans were.

Inslee, 68, became the third Democrat to end his presidential bid after U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell of California pulled out of the primary last month followed by former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper last week.

The governor’s announcement came hours after he released his six policy proposal on climate change. And it also came hours after he was scheduled to speak at a presidential forum hosted by the Iowa Federation of Labor. Inslee canceled his appearance Wednesday morning, blaming flight cancellations.

On Wednesday, Fox News repeatedly attempted to contact Inslee advisers ahead of his upcoming planned visit to New Hampshire on Thursday, but the campaign went silent and didn’t return calls or emails.

“[I]t became clear that we would not meet the DNC’s polling threshold, thus we would not have been invited to the fall debates,” Inslee said in a press release late Wednesday. “As a result, I don’t believe we can compete for the attention and exposure needed to have a reasonable shot at the nomination.

“As we turn to the future, I will have more to say about what comes next for me in the days ahead,” Inslee continued. “I can assure you that I will continue to lead, to demand bold action, and to do everything in my power to ensure the fight to defeat climate change stays at the top of the national agenda.”

INSLEE CALLS TRUMP A ‘WHITE NATIONALIST’ AT DEBATE

While Inslee had qualified for the first two presidential debates this summer, he struggled to gain traction in the crowded Democratic field and was falling short of the requirements needed to appear on two high-profile stages next month: the third DNC debate in Houston and a CNN town hall in New York focused on climate change.

He had recently hit one of the markers — 130,000 unique donors. But he had yet to reach 2 percent in any poll and would have needed to hit that level of support in four qualifying polls.

Other marginal candidates are in a similar position. Author and Internet favorite Marianne Williamson seemingly hasn’t qualified in any polls, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., apparently has only qualified in one so far, with time running out.

Inslee had sought to use the debates to boost his limited profile. At the July Democratic primary debate, Inslee declared to applause, “We can no longer allow a white nationalist to be in the White House.”

Asked by Fox News after the debate if he had prepared the ‘white nationalist’ line in advance, Inslee explained “I thought about it driving over here this afternoon. And it’s true because the White House is such  symbol of the United States, of our unity, of the fact that diversity is a strength, not a vice, the fact that we’re a nation of immigrants. But he’s really despoiled it.”

Inslee also targeted the GOP,  arguing “it is sad not only that he (Trump) has done that but worse that the Republican Party has enabled it. They’re complicit in his racism and his white nationalism because they will not speak against it.”

Meanwhile, prominent Democratic presidential contenders sounded notes of support for Inslee.

California Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris tweeted late Wednesday that Inslee’s “voice will be missed in this primary,” and that “few leaders have done more to shine a light on the climate crisis.”

Inslee didn’t say whether he planned to seek a third term as governor.

Governors in Washington state aren’t subject to term limits, though most haven’t served more than two terms. The last three-term governor in Washington was Republican Gov. Dan Evans, who served from 1965 until 1977.

WASHINGTON—President Trump backed away from pursuing new tax cuts to bolster the U.S. economy, a sharp reversal from a day earlier, when he had described several such measures the White House was contemplating.

“I just don’t see any reason to,” Mr. Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House when asked if he was pursuing any tax cuts. “We don’t need it. We have a strong economy.”

President Donald Trump is walking back his comments on implementing a payroll tax cut after stating that it’s something he’s been “thinking about” as a way to save the U.S. economy, which he described as doing “phenomenally well” from falling into a recession.

“I’m not looking at a tax cut now,” Trump told reporters as he departed for Kentucky. “We don’t need it, we have a strong economy.”

Just a day before, during a bilateral with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Trump suggested he was open to the idea of imposing a payroll tax cut.

“So it is something I’m thinking about, payroll taxes, I’ve been thinking about payroll taxes for a long time,” he said. “Whether or not we do it now or not, it’s not being done because of recession.”

In saying so, the president contradicted his own aides who had pushed back on the notion that a payroll tax cut was under consideration.

“It is not being considered at this time,” White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said during an interview with Fox News earlier on Tuesday. “He’s looking at tax cuts again — we think that spurs on the economic expansion.”

While speaking with reporters Wednesday afternoon, Trump also defended the U.S. trade war with China calling himself, “the chosen one.”

In response to a question from ABC News’ Kyra Phillips about whether taking the Americans into recession is worth it, the president told reporters, “I am the chosen one, somebody had to do it and I’m taking on China on trade. And you know what? We’re winning.”

The Amazon rainforest is burning at an unprecedented rate, and the fires are unlikely starting themselves. Rather they may be set by people in an attempt to clear land for cattle ranching.

Cattle ranching is responsible for as much as 80% of the ongoing deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. A significant portion of the global beef supply, including much of the UK’s corned beef supply, originates on land that was once Amazon rainforest and is now denuded.

“The fire that we’re seeing today is a fire that’s directly related to deforestation,” Ane Alencar, the scientific director of Brazilian NGO IPAM (Institute of Environmental Research in Amazonia), told forest news website Mongabay. These are not wildfires, she said, but rather fires set by people seeking to create cattle ranches, intentionally ignited during the dry season each year. “They cut the trees, leave the wood to dry and later put fire to it, so that the ashes can fertilize the soil.”

When the rainy season returns, grass for cattle briefly flourishes, thanks to the nutrients left by the ashes, Mongabay reports.

In satellite images of Mato Grosso, Brazil provided by satellite company Planet, taken on Aug. 20, smoke wafts above fragments of the rainforest interspersed with tan-colored squares of farmland, where the Amazon has already been deforested for agriculture.

As Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has expressed disdain for conserving the rainforest, his support for industrial growth has reportedly encouraged ranchers and other developers to move more brazenly into undeveloped forest land—much of which is indigenous territory.

Research has shown that indigenous management practices are the best approach to maintaining the health of tropical rainforests globally. Satellite imagery from the Amazon confirms that research; between the 1980s and 2018, deforestation crept all the way up to and against the exact contours of the Xingu Indigenous Park in Brazil, for example.

Over the last half century, a total area larger than the state of Texas has been lost to deforestation. As loggers, ranchers, and miners continue to encroach on the ecosystem, the loss is accelerating: Last month, it peaked at a rate of more than three football fields a minute.

Tropical rainforests are critical storage sites for carbon dioxide, keeping the greenhouse gas in its solid carbon state, locked away in soils and trees. The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest, making its protection critical to preventing runaway climate change.

The Amazon is also a biodiversity hotspot, and includes the most biodiverse place on Earth, making its preservation a matter of slowing down plant and animal extinctions, too. Hundreds of thousands of indigenous people in more than 400 tribes also live in the Amazon, and rely on the rainforest to support their lives and preserve their cultures.

Republican groups are pointing to statements made by Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan in response to similar comments from President Trump.

“I think any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday. He later clarified to mean that they would be showing disloyalty to Israel.

When asked if he is using an anti-Semitic trope, Trump said he has done “a lot of great things for Israel.”

Both the Republican National Committee and Republican Jewish Coalition were quick to reiterate the president’s record on Israel, which includes moving the embassy to Jerusalem and pulling out of the Iranian Nuclear Deal. They also pointed out the previous comments made by Omar and Tlaib that many accused to be anti-Semitic in their own right.

“President Trump has done more for Israel than any other president in recent memory,” RNC spokesman Steve Guest told the Washington Examiner on Wednesday. “Meanwhile, Ilhan Omar and the rest of ‘the squad’ regularly spread their vile anti-Semitic and anti-Israel views and get a free pass from Democrat Party leadership. President Trump is right to call out ‘the squad’s’ rhetoric for what it is, and urge voters to reject it.”

In a two-part tweet, the RJC said, “We take the President seriously, not literally. President Trump is pointing out the obvious: for those who care about Israel, the position of many elected Democrats has become anti-Israel,” adding, “When Tlaib and Omar talk loyalty, they’re questioning American Jews’ loyalty to the United States. President Trump is talking about caring about the survival of the Jewish state.”

As the the RJC pointed out, Omar and Tlaib were accused of pushing dual loyalty months ago.

At an event last spring in Washington, D.C., Omar said in part, “I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is okay to push for allegiance to a foreign country.”

Days after being sworn in last January, Tlaib argued that members of Congress “forgot what country they represent.” The comment came as the Senate’s first bill of the session was focused on defending the Israeli government despite the fact that there was an ongoing government shutdown at the time.

Pro-democracy protestors attending a rally in Hong Kong

As evening falls on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong, a queue of young people line up outside a small hardware store.

It’s become a popular outlet for protesters to stock up on gear needed for demonstrations. Boxes of hard hats and goggles spill out of the doorway and into the streets.

Chris – a 22-year-old graduate whose name, like the others in this story, has been changed for safety reasons – is a customer. He upgraded his half-face gas mask for an industry standard full-face respirator – the protesters’ gas mask of choice. He is a member of a 30-man team of battle-hardened protesters working in unison during heated street battles.

“There are many roles: fire fighters who put out tear gas, first-aiders, people who build the defence lines and runners who go up front to look out for the cops,” he tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

Anti-extradition protestors at Chater House Garden in Hong Kong

Hong Kong used to be a colony belonging to Britain.

It was returned to China in 1997 and was guaranteed certain freedoms not enjoyed in the rest of China.

The territory has been rocked by 11 weeks of anti-government protests that started as opposition to a now-suspended extradition bill, which would have allowed suspected criminals to be sent to mainland China for trial.

It has transformed into a civil-disobedience campaign, with weekly demonstrations sometimes ending in violent clashes between fringe protesters and police.

Protesters are calling for the complete withdrawal of the extradition bill, an independent inquiry into police use of force and greater democracy.

Last week two mainland Chinese citizens suspected of working as undercover police officers were tied up at a mass protest which paralysed Hong Kong’s international airport.

“People lost control of their emotions. Too much noise and people. It turned a bit chaotic,” says Chris, who was there.

“The older generation didn’t take their responsibility so we are forced to,” says David, a Hong Kong-born British national and protester.

“It’s only people between 15 and 30 doing this. What we are doing is protecting ourselves and protecting our next generation.”

Earlier in the summer he watched news of the anti-extradition protest from the UK and returned to Hong Kong to join the movement.

“If we are not going to do it, no-one is going to do it,” he says, dressed in black and armed with an umbrella – a symbol of the 2014 Hong Kong protest movement.

Like thousands of protesters he has taken part in clashes between police and demonstrators, sometimes throwing tear gas canisters back at the police.

Tanks have been seen in Shenzhen, a Chinese city near Hong Kong

On 1 June hundreds of protesters stormed Hong Kong’s parliament – ransacking the government building, smashing computers, destroying documents and vandalising Hong Kong’s emblem.

“It was really messy in there – everyone wanted to smash TVs, do graffiti everywhere. It felt chaotic but it was kind of organised at the same time,” says David.

Some protests since have become increasingly violent as demonstrators demand greater democracy.

“The British government can’t really do anything, they can’t take Hong Kong back. They should do their best to make them (China) do what the promise was. Give us a right to vote,” says David.

On Thursday, China’s ambassador to the UK said Beijing would not “sit by and watch” if protests became “uncontrollable”.

He urged Prime Minister Boris Johnson – who said he backed Hong Kong’s protesters “every inch of the way” during the Conservative leadership campaign – to take “great caution” when dealing with the former British colony.

“I think some politicians in this country… still regard Hong Kong as part of the British empire,” said Liu Xiaoming, China’s envoy to the UK.

Police ready to confront protestors on the streets of Hong Kong

Police say that more than 700 protesters have been arrested since the movement began. David fears he could be too.

“They can come to your house, knock on the door and arrest you for something you did years ago,” he says.

“Everyone is scared every day. Will I get arrested today, tomorrow, the day after?”

Society ‘falling apart’

Professor Francis Lee from the Chinese University of Hong Kong says young people are “fighting for a just and fair society that they perceive to have been falling apart” over the past decade or so.

His research into the protesters’ motivations found that 80% of participants believed the protests should continue if the government did not make any concessions. Approximately half of those questioned supported further escalations.

On Sunday more than one million protesters were on the street in largely peaceful protests – which Professor Lee thinks shows the ability of the movement to “adjust and self-correct”.

“Why are the protesters so anti-China?” questioned pro-Beijing legislator Regina Ip.

“I think they have been brainwashed by many anti-China teachers. They feel threatened by the mainland because of its economic rise,” she said.

“Hong Kong is paying a big price for the extradition bill. All the pent-up anger, all the long-standing problems of wealth gap and housing problems.”

Protestors have been gathering at Hong Kong airport to disrupt flights

Some protesters are concerned about the use of violence but emphasise the need to remain united in opposition.

“I would not physically pick up a brick and throw it at a police station, but I wouldn’t stop others from doing this,” says Lyla, a humanities university graduate.

“We are trying not to create all the fragmentation. It’s is important not to leave anyone behind. Not to make anyone feel isolated.”

China has warned that the military could be used to quell the protest movement.

On Thursday videos emerged online of thousands of Chinese military personnel stationed in a sports stadium in Shenzhen – a Chinese city just four miles away from Hong Kong.

“It would become like the Vietnam War if the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) comes in and no other countries are willing to help us. There are people who are ready to fight that war when it comes,” says Chris.

Police at Hong Kong airport during demonstrations

“It takes the military 10 minutes to get to Hong Kong. But it takes us less than 10 minutes to get home,” says David.

“We’ll just get on with our summer holiday like how it should be and we’ll just let the economy collapse.

“That’s the only way we can win. Because the Chinese economic system really relies on Hong Kong.

“If we burn they’ll burn with us.”

Topline: Just hours after accusing Jewish people who vote for Democrats of “disloyalty” (which drew widespread condemnation), President Trump quoted a controversial radio host who called him the “King of Israel” and “the second coming of God,” in the latest of a series of inflammatory comments about Jews.

  • In his tweet, Trump thanked Wayne Allyn Root, considered a “conspiracy theorist” by the Washington Post and others, for the tweets, calling them “very nice words.”
  • Trump followed his tweets by saying “I am the chosen one” during an interview with White House reporters. He was referring to his role in managing the trade war with China.
  • #DisloyalToTrump and #KingofIsrael soon began to trend on Twitter.
  • Trump also caused a firestorm of controversy last week when he encouraged Israel to bar Muslim congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib from visiting the country—which Israel acted upon.

Chief critics: A lot of Jewish people. The New York Times noted the “disloyalty” comment stems from an anti-Semitic trope that Jews are more devoted to Israel than the countries they reside in. It’s also a belief promoted by white nationalists. (Also, in the Jewish faith, there is no second coming of God.) Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted, “I am a proud Jewish person and I have no concerns about voting Democratic,” while Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer tweeted,“When [Trump] uses a trope that’s been used against the Jewish people for centuries with dire consequences, he is encouraging—wittingly or unwittingly—anti-Semites throughout the country and world.”

Meanwhile, on CNN, Anti-Defamation League director Jonathan Greenblatt said: “It is the height of hypocrisy to use Christian theology to bully Jews and to push out some messianic complex—literally, it’s hard to think of something less kosher than telling the Jewish people you’re the king of Israel, and therefore we should have some fidelity to you for that reason.”

Key background: The president has a history of aggressively (and awkwardly) courting Jewish voters, who overwhelmingly tend to vote for Democratic candidates (in the 2018 midterm elections, 78% voted Democrat).

In an overdue but welcome move from the Trump administration, the Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday their new regulation replacing the Flores Settlement Agreement, which forces the separation of migrant children from their parents while they await asylum proceedings. For all that immigration activists and even members of the media have lambasted the DHS’ elimination of the potentially illegal Flores settlement, it may right one of the worst humanitarian evils on the border: the sexual assault epidemic of migrant children.

The new Flores Final Rule will immediately ameliorate the minor-on-minor sexual assault crisis by keeping children under the supervision of their parents rather than in understaffed cages. Of 1,303 sexual abuse cases of migrant minors, the Justice Department found that in 1,125 of them, the perpetrators were other minors. Keeping parents in charge of their children will drastically increase the supervision of children, all but eliminating not just fellow minors abusing them but also adult predators.

In the long term, the new regulation will disincentivize human traffickers from stealing children as an effective entry ticket to the country. Given the rightful blowback of family separation, border security has been forced to relegate to catch-and-release in migrant cases involving children, thus inviting false asylum seekers and illegal immigrants to traffic children in the hopes of being released into the country. Contrary to the claims of immigration doves, the child trafficking problem has catapulted into a crisis. In a pilot program of rapid DNA tests, border security officials found that 30% of children weren’t related to the “parents” who brought them to the country.

The legality of the Flores Final Rule remains unclear, and there’s no question that the change, as well as increased funding for border facilities and expediting immigration courts, ought to be coming from Congress. But as a matter of protecting human rights while preventing catch-and-release from inviting mass influxes of illegal immigrants and human traffickers, the replacement of the Flores Agreement should be celebrated by Americans across the political spectrum.
