David Letterman is calling out Mike Pence for not wearing a mask during his Mayo Clinic visit, accusing the vice president of “taunting” COVID-19 survivors and health care workers.

On Tuesday, Pence appeared to violate the Rochester, Minnesota, hospital’s policy by not wearing a mask during his tour of facilities supporting coronavirus research.

Speaking to reporters following his visit, Pence said he did not wear a mask because he did not have the coronavirus and was following CDC guidelines about wearing masks to prevent the spread of the disease by those who are infected with it but might not have symptoms.

“As vice president of the United States, I’m tested for the coronavirus on a regular basis, and everyone who is around me is tested for the coronavirus,” Pence said.

Letterman, however, says he was disgusted by Pence’s mask-less presence.

“Now, if you go to the Mayo Clinic because you have COVID-19, you really have it,” Letterman said on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show Wednesday. “(Pence) takes time off from his gig as a mannequin, and he’s walking around without a mask taunting these poor people who are bedridden and wearing a mask.”

Letterman added: “To me, that is just taunting people who are ill, to see that guy in his $40 suit walking around in the Mayo Clinic without a mask.”

Letterman added that Pence is “particularly a thorn in my side because he used to be the governor of Indiana,” the home state of the television host.

Stern agreed with Letterman, saying Pence isn’t leading by example and is sending contradictory messages about whether Americans should be wearing masks or not.

Current guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the wearing of a mask in public to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Health experts in South Korea are addressing the nation’s growing incidence of former coronavirus patients who have retested positive for the disease after having previously recovered. According to Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, figures published Wednesday indicated that 292 people countrywide had tested positive for the respiratory illness since initially contracting it and later testing negative, suggesting conceivable recovery from infection. However, discussing the upward trend in positive retests during a recent news conference, officials from KCDC’s clinical committee for emerging disease control said the pattern does not necessarily reflect a reoccurrence of active infection.

Committee head Oh Myoung-don instead attributed positive test results following recovery to “dead,” or inactive, virus components still present in patients’ cells, multiple outlets based in South Korea reported on Wednesday.

“RNA fragments still can exist in a cell even if the virus is inactivated,” Oh said during the conference, according to government-funded media organization Yonhap News Agency. “It is more likely that those who tested positive again picked up virus RNA that has already been inactivated,” he continued, going on to explain that the coronavirus’ biological interactions with human DNA strands show its lack of ability to “create chronic infections.”

Still, concerns over South Korea’s growing number of positive retests have circulated throughout April, as the number of second-time diagnoses among “recovered” individuals has steadily risen. Less than two weeks ago, KCDC reported that 163 patients had tested positive for the virus again following recovery and subsequent discharge from isolation. At the time, repeat diagnoses accounted for slightly more than 2 percent of the country’s recovered population. On Wednesday, approximately 2.7 percent of previously recovered adults had tested positive for the coronavirus a second time, as well as 3.4 percent of children.

KCDC shared preliminary findings of an investigation into the retests on April 17, saying the average time between a recovered coronavirus patient’s discharge and positive test result was roughly 13.5 days, with an overall range of one to 35 days. Of 137 cases studied, KCDC reported that 61 patients showed mild symptoms, 72 were asymptomatic and four were still being explored. The disease control center also said there were no secondary infections identified in any successive cases.

By Sunday, South Korea had confirmed 263 cases of positive test results in formerly recovered coronavirus patients, and KCDC said its investigation remained ongoing.

“Contact tracing on these re-positive cases is also underway to identify possibility of secondary infection,” its April 26 report read. “No new case has yet been confirmed that resulted from exposure to the re-positive cases (during the period in which they were re-positive). The contacts are still under monitoring.”

As of Wednesday morning, 10,761 coronavirus cases and 246 resulting deaths had been confirmed across South Korea, according to Johns Hopkins University’s tracker. Reports from its Department of Health as well as KCDC show less than 15 people have tested positive for the first time each day since April 19.

A New York City funeral home used moving trucks loaded with ice to store dozens of bodies after running out of space, police officials said Wednesday.

The New York City Health Department issued two citations to the owner of the Brooklyn facility, Andrew T. Cleckley Funeral Services, but he was not criminally charged, two senior New York Police Department officials told NBC News.

The grim scene occurred as the city’s death toll from the coronavirus pandemic continues to grow. Officials have attributed more than 17,000 probable and confirmed deaths to COVID-19, the disease associated with the virus, according to data collected by the city.

The illness has killed 60,000 people across the United States, according to an NBC News tally.

The officials said 50 bodies had been stored in four trucks, including rentals from U-Haul, outside the funeral home in recent days. The owner told officials that he had been trying to do his best with an overflow of bodies, a problem they said was happening citywide.

A neighbor called authorities after seeing liquid leaking out of the back of the trucks, the officials said, adding that the bodies were moved into a refrigerated truck Wednesday.

Efforts to reach the funeral home’s owner Wednesday were unsuccessful.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump told Reuters on Wednesday he does not believe opinion polls that show his likely Democratic presidential opponent, Joe Biden, leading in the 2020 race for the White House.

During an interview in the Oval Office, the Republican president said he did not expect the election to be a referendum on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and added he was surprised the former vice president was doing well.

“I don’t believe the polls,” Trump said. “I believe the people of this country are smart. And I don’t think that they will put a man in who’s incompetent.”

Trump has criticized Biden’s decades-long record as a U.S. senator and as President Barack Obama’s vice president.

“And I don’t mean incompetent because of a condition that he’s got now. I mean he’s incompetent for 30 years. Everything he ever did was bad. His foreign policy was a disaster,” Trump said.

Polls conducted this week by Reuters/Ipsos about a general election matchup showed that 44% of registered voters said they would back Biden in the Nov. 3 election, while 40% said they would support Trump.

More critical for Trump, a recent poll by Reuters/Ipsos of the three key battleground states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania had Biden with a 45%-39% edge over the president. Trump’s victories in those states in the 2016 election helped propel him to the White House.

Trump closely questioned his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, and other political advisers after they showed him poll numbers showing him losing the re-election race to Biden, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The president was told he was behind Biden in many key battleground states and would have lost the Electoral College if the election had taken place in April.

Trump, in a tweet early on Thursday, said he supported Parscale.

Trump told Reuters he did not view the election as a test of how he did with the pandemic.

“No, I don’t think so. I think it’s a referendum on a lot of things,” Trump said. “I think it’s going to be a referendum on all the things we’ve done and certainly this will be a part of it, but we’ve done a great job.”

Biden has criticized Trump’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

Asked if he would debate Biden in the autumn, Trump responded: “Of course.”

The president has sought to stir up discord in Democratic Party ranks about Senator Bernie Sanders, who dropped out of the Democratic presidential race and endorsed Biden earlier this month.

The president has suggested that if fellow progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren had dropped out of the Democratic contest earlier, Sanders would have prevailed over Biden.

“He should never have won the primary, ever in a million years, because those votes were taken away. They were taken away from Bernie Sanders. And I think I’m going to get a lot of Bernie Sanders voters,” Trump said.

Trump has sought to make the case to Sanders’ supporters that their preferred candidate was treated unfairly, building on resentment that still lingers from 2016 when former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton beat Sanders for the nomination before losing to Trump in the general election.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he believes China’s handling of the coronavirus is proof that Beijing “will do anything they can” to make him lose his re-election bid in November.

In an interview with Reuters in the Oval Office, Trump said he was looking at different options in terms of consequences for China over the virus. “I can do a lot,” he said.

Trump has been heaping blame on China for a global pandemic that has killed at least 60,000 people in the United States according to a Reuters tally, and thrown the U.S. economy into a deep recession, putting in jeopardy his hopes for another four-year term.

The Republican president, often accused of not acting early enough to prepare the United States for the spread of the virus, said he believed China should have been more active in letting the world know about the coronavirus much sooner.

Asked whether he was considering the use of tariffs or even debt write-offs for China, Trump would not offer specifics.

“There are many things I can do,” he said. “We’re looking for what happened.”

“China will do anything they can to have me lose this race,” said Trump. He said he believes Beijing wants his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, to win the race to ease the pressure Trump has placed on China over trade and other issues.

Trump also said South Korea has agreed to pay the United States more money for a defense cooperation agreement but would not be drawn out on how much.

Most Americans would rather see former Vice President Joe Biden in charge of both the U.S. coronavirus response and the economy than current President Donald Trump, according to data from a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.

However, while Biden may have the upper hand in polling in those areas, the results fall strongly along party lines. Out of those surveyed, 55 percent of those surveyed chose Biden over Trump to handle the coronavirus pandemic. While 40 percent of those polled said they would rather see Trump handling coronavirus issues in the U.S., 87 percent of those who supported Trump in that arena identified themselves as Republicans. Likewise, 87 percent of Biden’s supporters labeled themselves as Democrats.

Although Trump has taken credit for creating a strong U.S. economy before the essential lockdown of the country due to the coronavirus, only 44 percent of those polled say they would rather see Trump handle the economy. A little over half would rather see Biden take the economic reins, garnering 51 percent of the poll. Those who were unsure about which candidate they would choose numbered 6 percent.

Democrats made up the majority of Biden’s support for handling the economy with 86 percent throwing the presumptive Democratic nominee their support. However, 92 percent of the Republicans polled wanted Trump to handle the economy with only 7 percent of Republican voters leaning toward Biden.

Newsweek reached out to both the Biden and Trump campaigns for comment.

Overall, 48 percent of Americans disapproved of how Trump is handling the economy. That represents a 3 percent increase of March’s poll when 45 percent of those polled indicated they did not approve.

Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic garnered a larger jump in the disapproval rating. While 49 percent of those surveyed voiced their disapproval in the March poll, 55 percent now say they do not approve of Trump’s response to the virus, a 6 percent increase.

Biden suggested during a Monday interview with CBS Miami that he would take a more global approach to economic matters.

“I would get much more engaged in the world,” Biden said. “We can’t step back. If in fact, for example we solve the problem in the United States of America and you don’t solve it in other parts of the world, you know what’s going to happen?”

“You’re going to have travel bans,” Biden explained. “You’re going to not be able to do, have economic intercourse around the world. When it’s America first, it’s America alone.”

Although stay-at-home orders issued by state governors have impacted businesses, forcing many to temporarily close or shut down completely, Trump has envisioned a rapid rebound for the U.S. economy.

“I think the fourth quarter is going to be really strong,” Trump said Tuesday during a meeting with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, “and I think next year is going to be a tremendous year. That’s what’s building. Third quarter is a transition quarter. Second quarter is what it is.”

Business closures forced the U.S. gross domestic product to fall at an annual rate of 4.8 percent for the first quarter of 2020, which represents the first decrease in the GDP since 2014.

The governor of the country’s third most populous state detailed his “Safe. Smart. Step-By-Step” plan for reopening in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

Starting May 4, Florida restaurants with outdoor seating can begin serving again at about 25% capacity. Golf courses, community pools and retail stores can reopen as well.

But Governor Ron DeSantis said that movie theaters would remain closed, even with social distancing in effect. “You are much better off being outdoors,” he said.

That decision is unlikely to spark much pushback from theater owners.

Even though movie theaters were included in the first round of re-openings in Georgia, they are not rushing to start operations. The National Association of Theater Owners issued a statement on April 22, underscoring that “while some states and localities are beginning to authorize the opening of movie theaters under certain conditions…many theaters will not be able to feasibly open.”

Some exhibitors told Deadline at the time that they’d likely program catalog titles in Georgia initially.

DeSantis’s plan did not apply to Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, which have been hard hit by the virus. Businesses there will remain closed and will begin a similar phased reopening when conditions there are safer.

Tucker Carlson ripped the “so-called feminist movement” on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Wednesday after Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. defended former Vice President Joe Biden against sexual assault allegations, highlighting the stark contrast with her treatment of allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in the fall of 2018.

“The American feminist movement may be the single most corrupt movement in the world,” Carlson said, “more corrupt than the government of Equatorial Guinea. It’s more corrupt than the World Health Organization. There is nothing more corrupt than institutional feminism.”

“If you want proof,” he continued, “look no further than Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. Two years ago, Gillibrand wanted Kavanaugh’s life and family destroyed.”

WOMEN’S GROUP VOCAL ON KAVANAUGH NOW SILENT ON BIDEN ALLEGATIONS

Gillibrand publicly expressed her support for Biden after former Senate staffer Tara Reade levied accusations of sexual assault against the 2020 presumptive Democratic nominee.

“I stand by [former] Vice President Biden,” Gillibrand said during a conference call with reporters Tuesday, according to The National Review. “He’s devoted his life to supporting women and he has vehemently denied this allegation.”

“The American feminist movement may be the single most corrupt movement in the world.”

— Tucker Carlson

Gillibrand has previously taken tough stands against other public figures accused of sexual misconduct allegations. She was a staunch defender of Christine Blasey Ford, who accused Kavanaugh of attempted rape when he and Ford were teenagers in the mid-1980s. At the time, Gillibrand said the proceedings would be a “sham” if Blasey Ford’s allegations weren’t investigated by the FBI.

“Her argument was that Kavanaugh has not demanded that the FBI forensically go through his entire life. He doesn’t appear to trust the FBI … therefore, he must be guilty,” Carlson mocked.

STACEY ABRAMS SAID BIDEN WILL ‘MAKE WOMEN PROUD’ WHEN ASKED ABOUT TARA READE ALLEGATIONS

“Has Joe Biden begged the FBI to take a close look at his personal life over the past 50 years?” Carlson continued. “Oh, he hasn’t? he must be guilty …” but “that’s no longer her [Gillibrand’s] position.”

In 2017, Gillibrand helped pressure then-Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., into his eventual resignation over sexual misconduct allegations.

Gillibrand has also defended former advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, who alleged last year that President Trump raped her in a department store in the 1990s.

“We want to be clear, we have no idea if Joe Biden actually did this, we hope not … but the point is, in American politics, it doesn’t matter,” Carlson concluded. “Here’s the takeaway: Institutional feminism, the so-called feminist movement, is fake. It was never about believing women.

“They don’t care about women. They care about power.”

President Trump said the existing coronavirus social distancing guidelines that are set to expire with the end of April on Thursday will not be extended further, as more governors begin steps to lift restrictions and reopen their economies.

The administration said the existing social distancing recommendations are being incorporated by governors into their new future plans.

“They’ll be fading out, because now the governors are doing it,” Trump said.

During a White House meeting with Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards on Wednesday, Trump commended governors for taking steps to reopen their economies.

The original two-week guidelines that were extended 30 more days called for Americans to work from home, limit travel and avoid large gatherings.

Vice President Pence said the existing guidelines were being applied to the new guidance issued by the White House on how states can reopen safely.

“Every state in America has embraced those guidelines at a minimum, or even done more, and now our focus is working with states,” Pence said. “The current guidelines, I think you can say, are very much incorporated in the guidance that we’re giving states to open up America again.”

Two weeks ago, the White House released a three-phase plan that provides guidelines for when states might reopen.

The proposal is predicated on states having a downward trajectory of confirmed cases, and it involves states having the capacity to treat all hospitalized patients, test health care workers and trace contacts of those infected.

This comes as governors have struggled with the competing interests of reopening their economies and keeping their communities safe.

A handful of states have taken steps to relax their social distancing guidelines, including Alaska, Georgia and Tennessee.

Others, like North Carolina and Michigan, have extended their restrictions into May.

Though he once said he had “total” authority regarding when states could reopen, Trump says he is largely leaving those decisions to governors.

“We’re doing it very carefully,” Trump said. “We learned a lot over the last couple of months.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James has condemned President Donald Trump for suggesting that federal assistance to states hard-hit by the coronavirus outbreak could be tied to whether or not they are willing to adjust their sanctuary policies.

Trump made the suggestion on Tuesday, expressing concerns over providing financial support to governments that he feels have managed their states poorly.

“We’re not looking to recover 25 years of bad management and give them the money that they lost,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “That’s unfair to other states.”

While the president said he was open to discussing the possibility with states, he said: “We’d want certain things also, including sanctuary-city adjustments.”

Criticizing sanctuary policies, which allow protections for undocumented immigrants, often including rules barring law enforcement from working with federal immigration enforcement, Trump said: “People are being protected that shouldn’t be protected. And a lot of bad things are happening with sanctuary cities.”

“If we’re going to do something for the states, I think we probably want something having to do with sanctuary cities,” Trump said.

With New York having some of the most prominent sanctuary policies, Attorney General Letitia James struck out at Trump for threatening to hold coronavirus aid “hostage.”

“President Trump’s threat to hold coronavirus funding hostage to cities and states across the country are the latest in his efforts to push a sinister political agenda that only aims to punish us all—citizens and non-citizens alike,” James said in a statement shared with Newsweek.

“This is just another attempt to again feed to his base and push the same partisan ideology we’ve seen for the last three years,” James said, noting Trump’s longstanding opposition to sanctuary policies.

“New York is proud of its status as a sanctuary state that welcomes and will fight to protect its immigrant residents—many of whom are fighting on the frontlines to battle the coronavirus,” James asserted.

“It is my sincerest hope that one day the president will wake up and realize the power of his words,” she said, adding: “Until that day comes we will be ready to take legal action.”

It is unclear what form of legal action New York would take if the White House were to try to negotiate changes to the state’s sanctuary policies in order for New York to receive aid from the federal government.

Newsweek has contacted James’ office, as well as the White House, for further comment.

The New York attorney general was not alone in admonishing the president’s threat, with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also condemning his statements.

“We cannot allow the Trump administration to exploit a public health crisis to further their anti-immigrant agenda,” the ACLU said in a tweet following the president’s comments.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled a plan Wednesday to lift the state’s stay-at-home orders amid the coronavirus crisis that he called “safe, smart and step by step.”

The plan will go into effect Monday in every county except Dade, Palm Beach and Broward counties, where most of the state’s COVID-19 cases have been reported, DeSantis said.

But before DeSantis released any details, he took a swipe at the “doom and gloom” media and critics who faulted him for the state’s slow response to the unfolding crisis.

“A lot has been done to promote fear,” DeSantis said. “We haven’t seen an explosion of new cases.”

That having been said, 83 people died in Florida from the coronavirus Tuesday, the biggest spike in daily deaths since the pandemic started.

The restrictions, which have been in place since early April — and which were set to expire Friday — will be lifted “in a very measured, thoughtful and data-driven way,” DeSantis promised earlier.

Under phase one, retail stores and restaurants can reopen, but only at 25 percent capacity. Eateries will be allowed to seat people outside, but they will have to maintain 6 feet of social distancing. And elective surgical procedures will be allowed to resume.

But schools, bars, gyms, hair salons, nursing home and long-term care facilities will remain closed until further notice.

See what states across the U.S. are starting to reopen

People should continue avoiding large gatherings of more than 10 people and don masks whenever possible, the governor said.

“We’re not going to fine people if they’re not doing it,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis’ announcement came as 350 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed Wednesday in Florida, along with 47 new deaths, bringing the state’s virus-related death toll to 1,218. More than 5,400 people remain hospitalized with COVID-19, according to the state Health Department.

And it came after DeSantis touched base with President Donald Trump during an Oval Office meeting.

Wary Florida officials warned that they would hit the brakes if DeSantis moved too fast to reopen the state.

Daytona Beach City Commission member Rob Gilliland said that if DeSantis “comes out with something we don’t think is restrictive enough,” the city could mandate precautions to ensure that residents are protected.

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Florida officials have stopped releasing the list of coronavirus deaths being compiled by county medical examiners, “which has at times shown a higher death toll than the state’s published count.”

DeSantis, a Republican and staunch Trump supporter, had been widely criticized for refusing to quickly clear the beaches of visitors and issue stay-at-home orders.

DeSantis also undermined the Hillsborough County sheriff’s efforts to stop a renegade mega-church pastor from holding Sunday services and endangering thousands of worshippers.

Full coverage of the coronavirus outbreak

Rodney Howard-Browne wound up abandoning his plans to reopen The River at Tampa Bay Church on Easter after he was dropped by his insurance company.

Currently, the DeSantis administration is taking flak for the state’s balky Unemployment Assistance program, which critics like Miami Beach Mayor Don Gelber say “was essentially set up, unfortunately, to be stingy, to be cumbersome and to not really give out employment checks.”

“The state of Florida has been really unforgivable when it comes to unemployment benefits,” Gelber said Wednesday on MSNBC. “Our city is, you know, organizing food lines and such, like a lot of cities across America. It’s heartbreaking to see the number of people online because they can’t afford a meal or need food for their family.”

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is fighting a lawsuit challenging his right to extend the state’s stay-at-home order by 30 days.

Charles Rex Arbogast/AP

The fight over COVID-19 has become a legal battle in Illinois, pitting a Republican state lawmaker from a rural county against the Democratic governor.

Darren Bailey argued the state’s latest stay-at-home order was taking an unfair economic toll on his constituents in Clay County. So he sued last week. And won. Sort of.

A Clay County circuit court judge issued a temporary restraining order against the state’s extension of its stay-at-home policy.

That ruling only applies to one person, though — Bailey.

Everyone else living in Clay County, and the rest of the state, still must abide by the 30-day extension set by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“Enough is enough,” Bailey said in a statement. “I filed this lawsuit on behalf of myself and my constituents who are ready to go back to work and resume a normal life.”

Pritzker is appealing the judge’s order.

At his daily press conference Tuesday, the governor called the lawsuit a “cheap political stunt” and the court decision “dangerous.” He said it invites others to try for exemptions to an order that relies on collective action to keep people safe.

“I know the virus is causing devastating consequences, just as it has caused tens of thousands to become ill and thousands to die,” Pritzker said, “and responsible people understand the consequences of opening too early.”

Clay County’s population is nearly 14,000, according to the 2010 Census. So far, it has only two confirmed cases of COVID-19. Bailey lives in Xenia, Ill., about 200 miles south of Chicago.

He argues the stay-at-home order is causing an economic pandemic in an area not hard-hit by the disease and that Pritzker did not have the authority to extend the order. The original deadline was April 30; it’s now May 31.

Across the country, decisions about stay-at-home orders and reopening economies by governors, regardless of party, have increasingly turned into political fights. An attorney for Rep. Bailey says he has received heavy interest from others who want to take similar action against the governor.

Illinois has reported more than 48,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 2,000 deaths. Pritzker says the danger has not passed yet, and credits the stay-at-home order with flattening the curve and drastically slowing the number of cases in Illinois.

Pritzker says he’s confident the ruling against him will be overturned.

President Donald Trump’s latest comments about the United States’ coronavirus testing problem come straight out of the playbook he used to downplay the coronavirus problem in January and February. That’s not a reassuring thing.

Trump seems to be in denial about the reality that experts say the US needs to more than double its daily coronavirus testing capacity in order to safely relax stringent social distancing. To hear him and other White House officials like Jared Kushner tell it, states already have more than enough testing resources to get on with reopening schools and businesses. (Governors disagree.)

Trump’s dismissiveness of the testing problem was demonstrated by his most recent press conference on Tuesday. The president responded to questions about the state- and private sector-centric testing plan he unveiled the day before — one that, even if executed properly, would fall far short of what’s needed — with a mix of brazen lies, nonsensical deflection, and wishful thinking.

“We are the best in the world in testing. We’ve tested much more than anybody else, times two. Or every country combined — we’ve tested more than every country combined,” Trump said, falsely, as the US has not even come close close to doing more testing than all other countries combined.

“We inherited a very broken test, a broken system, and a broken test,” Trump continued, seemingly trying to blame his predecessor — President Obama, who left office in 2017 — for his own government’s costly initial failure to develop an effective test for a virus that didn’t even exist until late last year, let alone reach the US until he had been in office for three full years.

As illogical as his responses might be, Trump’s effort to shift blame is meant to obfuscate from the fact that while the raw numbers of tests completed are piling up thanks to the passage of time, the per-day numbers continue to fall short.

According to the Covid Tracking Project, the US is currently conducting about 220,000 coronavirus tests a day. Experts broadly agree that at least 500,000 per day is needed, and some think as many as 5 million daily tests are necessary to adequately identify and contain Covid-19 outbreaks.

The testing plan Trump unveiled on Monday would only get the US up to about 260,000 tests a day by the end of May — a slight improvement over the current state of affairs, but one that still falls far short of what’s needed.

But when Trump was asked on Tuesday if he’s confident that the country can do 5 million tests a day soon, his response bordered on the delusional.

“We’re going to be there very soon. If you look at the numbers, it could be that we’re getting very close,” Trump said, ignoring that 260,000 is nowhere near 5 million — and that such a sharp uptick would require the sort of increase in the production of test materials that’s proven impossible so far. “We’re gonna be there very soon.”

Those comments were troublingly reminiscent of what Trump was saying about the coronavirus back in February and March, when he was insisting everything was under control and the virus would go away on its own, “like a miracle.”

Those claims were obviously false at the time, and look even worse 1 million confirmed US cases and nearly 60,000 deaths later. Trump’s claims about testing are likely to also age poorly, and even more so if he keeps pushing for states to reopen businesses and schools without the testing capacity needed to keep the virus under control.

Trump, however, made it abundantly clear on Tuesday that he’s still engaged in wishful thinking. Pressed by a reporter about how he can be so confident that the worst of the pandemic is behind us even as deaths continue to mount and no vaccine or effective treatments are available, Trump expressed blind faith, then pivoted to talking about his hopes for a sharp economic rebound in time for November’s election.

“I think what happens is it’s going to go away. This is gonna go away,” Trump said, adding later: “I really believe that fourth quarter is gonna be, maybe tremendous.”
