“We really looked at the essential workforce and how to maintain that workforce, particularly at this time as we begin to get ready to reopen and have confidence in bringing our workforces back to work,” Redfield said.

The new guidance includes three main conditions: Essential workers who have been exposed to the virus must take their temperature before going to work, wear a face mask and practice social distancing at all times.

It’s unclear if the CDC guidance advises health workers to wear a specific kind of mask, like an N95, which has been in short supply in many parts of the country.

Redfield also said the CDC is advising people returning to work after coronavirus exposure to avoid congregating in break rooms, lunch rooms or crowded places, and he said employers should increase air exchange in offices and more frequently clean surfaces in communal spaces.

The governor offered a glimmer of hope that the state’s stringent policies — closing nonessential businesses and requiring residents to stay home — are helping to slow down the spread of the virus.

Those social distancing measures are working, he said: “It is flattening the curve.”

If those rules are maintained, he said, there’s reason to believe the health “system should stabilize over these next couple of weeks.”

The coronavirus pandemic continues to hammer the Empire State, new figures showed. New York reported 10,453 new cases Wednesday, comprising 4,927 positive tests in New York City and 5,526 in the rest of the state.

Half of all tests in two New York City boroughs – Queens and the Bronx – came back positive, the state reported.

Cuomo said the state appears to be flattening the curve of the outbreak, referring to a line chart that projects the growth in new cases over time. But he quickly added that would only last if people continue to adhere to social distancing guidelines. 

“If we stop what we are doing, you will see that curve change,” Cuomo said.

The bad news, he said, “isn’t just bad. The bad news is actually terrible.”

Cuomo announced that 779 people had died from the virus since the last count, marking the state’s highest daily death toll yet.

New York is the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis in the United States, with 140,386 confirmed cases and more than 5,489 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

For several weeks, Mr. Sanders surged. In Iowa, he finished in a virtual tie for first with Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., who, at 38, was less than half his age. He then narrowly beat Mr. Buttigieg in New Hampshire, before dominating the field less than two weeks later in the Nevada caucuses.

Suddenly there was talk that Mr. Sanders would run away with the nomination. But his loss in South Carolina to Mr. Biden, who had emerged as the leading moderate in the race, brought his momentum to an abrupt halt, raising significant questions about his weaknesses with black voters and an overriding failure to expand his base.

Three days later, as centrist Democrats rushed to support Mr. Biden, Mr. Sanders lost all of the Southern states voting on Super Tuesday as well as states like Massachusetts and Minnesota that he had expected to win.

Mr. Sanders quickly canceled a planned rally in Mississippi and deployed resources to Michigan, a tacit acknowledgment that the Midwestern state had become something of a must-win for his candidacy to survive.

But the momentum had turned solidly to Mr. Biden, who won Michigan easily, then a week later captured three big delegate prizes — Florida, Illinois and Arizona.

By then, the coronavirus was disrupting the rest of the political calendar, forcing states to postpone their primaries until June. Mr. Sanders has spent much of the intervening time at his home in Burlington without his top advisers, assessing the future of his campaign. Some close to him had speculated he might stay in the race to continue to amass delegates as leverage against Mr. Biden.

But in the days leading up to his withdrawal from the race, some of Mr. Sanders’s closest advisers began mapping out the financial and political considerations for him and what scenarios would give him the maximum amount of leverage for his policy proposals, and some concluded that it was more beneficial for him to suspend his campaign.

Sen. Bernie Sanders’s second crusade for the White House is over. The insurgent candidate had briefly seemed like the favorite for the Democratic nomination this time, but he fell behind the mainstream party choice — again.

The news broke on Wednesday that the Vermont senator would suspend his campaign. Former Vice President Joe Biden is now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

A few weeks ago, Sanders fell short in the Florida, Arizona, and Illinois primaries and found himself too far behind Biden to have any realistic hope of catching up in the delegate count. The coronavirus pandemic has seized the attention of the nation, including that of the US Senate, and introduced public health concerns for the ongoing primary elections.

With a comeback increasingly unlikely, the Sanders campaign has decided to suspend its operations. But Sanders did claim a kind of victory, in expanding the ideological bounds of the political debate during his two presidential bids.

“Together we have transformed American consciousness as to what kind of nation we can become and have taken this country a major step forward in the never-ending struggle for economic justice, social justice, racial justice and environmental justice,” Sanders said in a speech to close his 2020 campaign. “Over the course of the last five years, our movement has won the ideological struggle.”

Sanders had a plan to win the primary, and for a time, it seemed to be working. Initially voters were scattered among Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, and Elizabeth Warren. In the first three primary states — Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada — Sanders won bigger and bigger popular vote majorities. He had the most delegates. So long as the field stayed fractured, he certainly had a path. And it seemed possible from the polling that he could consolidate enough voters to top the former vice president in a one-on-one contest. He was running up good margins with Latino voters.

But then Biden surged in South Carolina, defeating Sanders by nearly 30 points, and Buttigieg and Klobuchar dropped out and endorsed the former veep. The 2020 script fully flipped on Super Tuesday, March 3, three days later. Biden swept the South and encroached on Sanders-friendly ground in Massachusetts and Minnesota. He took the lead in the popular vote and, more importantly, the delegate lead in the national primary. Big Biden wins in the March 10 and 17 primaries put the nomination effectively out of reach for Sanders.

Now Sanders has yielded, the runner-up for the second presidential primary campaign in a row. It was not enough to take over the Democratic Party from the inside; his political revolution has reached its limit again. Sanders and his supporters will be left to tussle with the difficult questions: What went wrong, and what could we have done differently?

In some ways, Sanders ran much the same campaign as he did in 2016: against the establishment, for radical ideas like Medicare-for-all, setting many standards for progressive policies in the Democratic tent. But while he ran up margins with Latino and white working-class voters (until he didn’t in Michigan, with the latter) and the young left, Sanders did not expand his base enough beyond what he had four years ago. He did not make enough inroads with black voters, especially older ones.

An uncompromising style, which makes him the subject of reverence among his most loyal supporters, seemed to have had limited appeal. Mainstream American discomfort with “socialism” complicated Sanders’s bid even further. Moderate and conservative Democrats went overwhelmingly for Biden and so did many progressives (one in five “very liberal” voters on Super Tuesday) when the time came. And hanging over all of it was an overwhelming urge among Democrats to beat President Trump — they finally settled on Biden as the best person to do that.

In some tangible ways, Sanders did win the Democratic debate. The public option is now the moderate position on health care, and Medicare-for-all is popular with Democratic voters. His focus on structural inequality and corporate influence is here to stay, especially among the young voters who were so fond of Sanders.

As the senator asserted in what is likely his final speech as a presidential candidate: “The future of this country is with our ideas.”

But he didn’t win the nomination. In 2020, there was a hard ceiling on revolutionary politics — and Sanders hit it.

Why Sanders fell from presumptive favorite to runner-up in 2020

Coming off the first three primary states, Sanders looked formidable: The FiveThirtyEight forecast gave him about a 50 percent chance of winning the majority of delegates needed to clinch the nomination. And whatever the party’s elite said, he would have been the likely candidate even if he fell just short of that threshold. Sanders was in the driver’s seat.

But there were ominous signs buried in the vote results from the early states. Sanders had won amid a fractured field, with Buttigieg, Klobuchar, and Biden dividing up the center-left vote. He never topped 34 percent of the popular vote (his showing in the first vote of the Nevada caucuses), and the exit polling data did not show the surge in turnout from young or infrequent voters that Sanders and his team were betting on in the long term.

This was always one of the big questions about Sanders’s “electability” in a hypothetical general election matchup with Trump: He was competitive because younger voters and less frequent voters said they would vote for him and only him. But, as David Broockman and Joshua Kalla outlined for Vox, the problem with this strategy is those voters have not historically showed up at the ballot box, whatever they might say.

That proved to be part of Sanders’s undoing in the primary, as was the rapid mainstream consolidation around Biden after his rebound in South Carolina. Some would blame Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the other staunch progressive in the race who dropped out after Super Tuesday, but polling showed her votes were likely to split between Sanders and Biden anyway.

Sanders was ahead in the early delegate count because he was winning the most votes in a crowded race, but the Democratic rules for allocating delegates limited how much of a lead he could build. That was an important difference from the 2016 Republican primary, when Trump also kept winning in a fractured field, as former Vox reporter Tara Golshan noted at HuffPost. Democratic delegates are awarded proportionally by state, unlike the winner-take-all primaries for the GOP. So Biden (and Buttigieg and others) still won plenty of delegates in the states Sanders was winning.

And once Sanders fell behind Biden, it was that much harder to catch up.

What happens to Sanders’s political revolution now?

For the second time in four years, Sanders made a game run at the Democratic nomination — and fell short. He is 78 years old. A third run seems unlikely.

Sanders can know that he has successfully shifted the internal Democratic debate over health care especially. He “wrote the damn bill” on Medicare-for-all, and now about 75 percent of Democratic voters say they support a national health insurance plan that covers everyone. His commitment to that position has pushed the rest of the party to the left. His plan got the endorsement of fellow candidates Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren. In 2016, Hillary Clinton’s health reform plan was limited to improving Obamacare; in 2020, Joe Biden is running on a public option.

The question for the left, now that the face of democratic socialism has fallen short of the ultimate prize, is what happens now. Even some Sanders supporters worried about this scenario before he announced he would run for president a second time. Here’s Hamilton Nolan in Splinter back in December 2018:

It’s not the time for an 80 year-old president. The movement needs young blood. A new generation of political leadership is already bursting forth. Bernie, you can take satisfaction in the knowledge that you played a leading role in pulling these left wing ideas into the mainstream. You will not be president, though. And that is fine.

Now it seems Sanders will be forced to step back, after a second electoral loss, and a new generation will have to step up.

There are obvious candidates. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a sensation in her own right, probably tops the list. But they will have to prove their viability in a national race if the left is to have a shot at the White House anytime soon. As Broockman and Kalla wrote for Vox, 11 percent of left-leaning young people said they would only vote for Sanders in a presidential election; otherwise, they would vote third-party or not vote at all.

Maybe those voters can be won over by the next faces of the left. We’ll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, the Sanders wing of the Democratic Party will surely engage in a lengthy postmortem about why it lost again. There will be debates about policy: Should supporters be so hard on progressives who say they support their goals want to take more incremental steps to achieve them? Is it time to tone down the rhetoric, as so many Democrats — even Elizabeth Warren, his most important ideological ally, and her supporters — chafed at the online harassment they felt from Sanders supporters? There will be plenty of conversations, in the long slog to a general election between Trump and Biden, and long after that.

Today was the end for Bernie Sanders, the presidential candidate. But it may not yet be the end of his movement.

As Trump attacks, WHO warns against politicizing coronavirus if you don’t want ‘many more body bags’ – CNBC

The WHO, the United Nations’ health agency, started sounding the alarm on the outbreak of a new coronavirus in Wuhan, China in mid-January, designating the COVID-19 pandemic as a global health emergency on Jan. 30 when there were just 8,200 cases in 18 countries across the world. The coronavirus has since wreaked havoc across the globe, spreading to more than 1.4 million people and killing more than 83,000, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. 

The WHO’s global emergency declaration on Jan. 30 was nearly a month before Trump tweeted that “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA” and six weeks before he declared a national emergency on March 13.

Two days earlier, on March 11, WHO officials declared the outbreak a pandemic, when there were just 121,000 global cases. 

While WHO officials have praised the U.S. response to the coronavirus, they’ve also been critical of some of Trump’s policies and practices surrounding it. They’ve urged people against calling COVID-19 the “Chinese virus” as Trump has done, saying that it could unintentionally lead to racial profiling.

Trump said Tuesday he is thinking about withholding funds to the WHO, saying the international agency pushed back on his travel ban from China early in the COVID-19 outbreak. It’s unclear how Trump would do this, however. Congress has already authorized $122 million for the WHO for this fiscal year, and while Trump has proposed $58 million in funding for the agency in fiscal year 2021, Congress is unlikely to authorize such a drastic funding cut, especially in the wake of the pandemic.

“For God’s sake, we have lost more than 60,000 citizens of the world … More than 1 million cases. What are we doing? Is this not enough?” Tedros said. “Even the death of one person is a disaster when we can prevent it.”

Tedros thanked the U.S. for its generous support in the past to fight the HIV pandemic under former President George W. Bush. He called on the U.S., China and rest of the G20 nations to come together to fight the pandemic. Even during the Cold War, he said, the U.S. and Russia set aside their differences to work together to fight small pox. 

“This is not the one to use for politics. It’s like playing with fire, so more than ever before national unity is important, if we care about our people, if we care about our citizens, please work across party lines, across ideology, across beliefs, across any differences for that matter,” he said. “We need to behave. That’s how we can defeat this virus.”

CDC director predicts lower death toll than previously forecasted | TheHill – The Hill

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director predicted a lower death toll than the administration had previously forecasted due to the public’s compliance with social distancing.

The early predictions of the COVID-19’s expected death toll in the U.S. assumed about half of Americans “would pay attention to the recommendations,” CDC Director Robert Redfield said Monday in an interview with AM 1030 KVOI Radio in Tucson, Ariz. 

“What we’re seeing is a large majority of the American public are taking the social distancing recommendations to heart,” he said. “And I think that’s the direct consequence of why you’re seeing the numbers are going to be much, much, much, much lower than would have been predicted by the models.”

Redfield’s comments follow administration health officials’ projections that between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans could die from the coronavirus, even if people followed the social distancing and stay-at-home guidance. 

The administration has taken a somber tone in the past week, with President TrumpDonald John TrumpCDC updates website to remove dosage guidance on drug touted by Trump Trump says he’d like economy to reopen ‘with a big bang’ but acknowledges it may be limited Graham backs Trump, vows no money for WHO in next funding bill MORE and Surgeon General Jerome Adams saying the weeks ahead will be tough. Adams said on Sunday he expected the week to be the “hardest and saddest” for most Americans, saying it will be “our Pearl Harbor moment and our 9/11 moment.”

But the surgeon general had more optimism on Tuesday saying he “absolutely” believed the death toll will fall short of the administration’s earlier predictions. 

“I really do believe that we will come in under those projections as long as we can continue to do our part for 30 days,” he said.

Tens of thousands of people streamed out of Wuhan by car, train and plane after a 76-day lockdown was lifted Wednesday from the Chinese city where the global coronavirus pandemic began.

The end of the lockdown is a milestone in China’s efforts to contain the outbreak of a new coronavirus that sickened more than 80,000 across the country and overwhelmed health systems. Yet another milestone came this week, as the country reported on Tuesday there were no new infection cases for the first time since the outbreak began in late December.

But residents caution Wuhan now must also begin dealing with the deeper, longer-lasting emotional and economic traumas of the outbreak.

The exodus is also prompting fears of a second wave of infections, amid rising suspicions of undercounting of coronavirus-related deaths and concerns over the prevalence of those carrying the virus but showing no symptoms.

Many travelers arrived at the train station hours before schedule. Their excitement was palpable after spending most of the past 76 days confined indoors.

A Wuhan doctor specializing in pulmonary and critical care estimated based on recent survey data there may be between 10,000 and 20,000 asymptomatic carriers in the city. But experts from the central Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, most notably Dr. Zhong Nanshan, who has emerged as the figurehead of China’s effort to tackle the pandemic, say they do not anticipate asymptomatic carriers will cause a second wave of infections.

End of a long quarantine

Wuhan, a city of 11 million, had been sealed off from the rest of China since Jan. 23 in a drastic attempt to halt the spread of COVID-19. After more than two months of quarantine, joyful but weary travelers flocked to the city’s reopened train stations and airport, many to return to jobs put on pause during the outbreak — others to reunite with family.

“I have been preparing for this day for many days,” said Victoria Li, while boarding one of the first trains to leave Wuhan’s Hankou Station Wednesday morning, destined for the nearby city of Jingzhou. She said she was jubilant to leave Wuhan because she had been separated from her young child during the outbreak.

For others, their moment of departure was bittersweet. Bai Xue, a tourist from the northeastern city of Shenyang, found herself stuck in Wuhan while on vacation. She arrived at the airport at the stroke of midnight Wednesday — well before her mid-afternoon flight.

“To be honest, for the last few days, I have been crying a lot,” said Bai, choking up as she recounted her two months in Wuhan. “I cannot tell if they were tears of joy. Finally, I get to go home. It is as if I am escaping purgatory.”

During the lockdown, Bai found it challenging to get groceries as she was largely confined indoors and unable to understand the local dialect. But she said she is grateful that neighborhood committee workers helped her deliver face masks and a care package of sweet porridge from home. “Wuhan has seen so much suffering, and we have made it through,” she told NPR.

At midnight on April 8, all highway checkpoints installed on Jan. 23 were removed. Cars lined up on the road, waiting to leave after the intracity traffic ban was lifted.

Transportation authorities said 55,000 people had purchased train tickets to leave Thursday and tens of thousands more were expected to leave by car and plane. Only about half the normal, pre-outbreak number of flights were operating on Wednesday. Only three-quarters of seats on planes would be filled, airport authorities said, and train passengers would be seated one seat apart from each other.

Wuhan is still under certain quarantine measures, however. Residential compounds now require everyone to use a government app that tracks any contact with sick patients or travel to a high-risk area before leaving and entering their compounds. Many compounds only allow residents to leave for two hours at a time, unless they are going to work.

The city’s economy is also only slowly beginning to come online.

Automakers, which form the largest industry in Hubei, the province where Wuhan is located, reopened their production lines the soonest, some as early as March 11. But businesses that fall under Hubei’s “restricted list,” which are all entertainment venues, such as movie theaters and gyms, and dine-in restaurants, are ordered to stay shut until the outbreak is officially declared over.

Dongfeng Honda, a major automaker headquartered in Wuhan, reopened some of its production lines as early as March 11. Only large enterprises that provide critical resources to the national and local economy have been allowed to resume work in Hubei.

A second wave of infections?

Questions about the accuracy of China’s official COVID-19 statistics and rising concern over asymptomatic cases have prompted fears of a second wave of infections as travelers leave Wuhan.

“Just because we have zero new daily cases does not mean we have zero risk,” said Yu Yeru, a manager at the Hankou train station in Wuhan on Wednesday.

Amid growing public pressure, China’s national health commission began disclosing daily new confirmed asymptomatic cases on April 1 but has not released a total number of such cases since the start of the outbreak.

With rising concerns that the movements of asymptomatic carriers could lead to a second wave of infection, travelers remain vigilant about wearing protective gear at the Tianhe Airport in Wuhan.

A pre-print study jointly published by Chinese and American researchers that is awaiting peer review concluded that at least 59%, or more than 15,000, of the 25,000 confirmed Wuhan cases analyzed are “unascertained.” That could include asymptomatic carriers and mild-symptom patients who recovered without extensive medical attention.

NPR reported last month that some Wuhan patients, including two who were asymptomatic and previously declared recovered, later tested positive again for the virus, suggesting faulty diagnostic tests may also be missing cases.

While all travelers leaving Wuhan on Wednesday had to demonstrate no previous travel through high-risk areas and no recent contact with sick patients, very few are currently required to take a diagnostic test for the coronavirus.

Afraid that Beijing may see a rise in cases as those stuck in Wuhan rush to return to the capital, the city released a strict daily quota for the number of passengers allowed to enter by car and by train on Wednesday. The estimated 11,000 people who have applied online to travel to Beijing have to wait their turn as only 1,000 are permitted to enter each day.

A Jingzhou-bound train left Wuhan at 6:25 a.m., carrying with it Victoria Li, who said she was jubilant to leave the city after being separated for her young child during the outbreak.

But for the fortunate ones who managed to depart at the crack of dawn, the excitement to move on was palpable.

“To be honest, I am a little excited. The people of Wuhan suffered so much, so many people died, and we had to stay inside for so long. If you are isolated for so long, you really go crazy,” said Li Hao, a Wuhan native taking an early afternoon flight to the city of Chengdu, where he works.

For some, the one silver lining to the emotional trauma of the last two months was spending so much time with family, albeit indoors. “I feel very differently about my family members,” Li said. “I was able to accompany them for such a long period of time. That has been the one comfort.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director, said Americans should never shake hands again, in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus and other diseases.

The leading infectious disease expert on President Donald Trump’s coronavirus task force told the Wall Street Journal that an end to handshaking would be good for reducing future transmissions of the novel coronavirus and would also cut the number of influenza cases.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Journal podcast, the NIAID director hoped to see “light at the end of the tunnel” by the end of April.

Speaking about the eventual return to normal life, Dr. Fauci said: “When you gradually come back, you don’t jump into it with both feet. You say what are the things you could still do and still approach normal. One of them is absolute compulsive hand washing. The other is you don’t ever shake anybody’s hands.”

He also suggested that people might want to wear “cloth face protection” if they could not avoid being within six feet of others as life starts its return to normal.

When the host Kate Linebaugh pointed out that Fauci and others on the coronavirus task force did not stand six feet apart at pandemic briefings, the disease expert said: “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good here. The task force group is a little bit different.

“Since we’re around the president… it’s got to be clear that we’re not endangering him. So I get tested frequently and I get my temperature taken eight, nine times a day. Every time you go into a different room in the White House you get your temperature taken.

“So I don’t think you should judge the use or not of masks and physical separation what you see with the task force for the rest of the country, it really is different.”

Asked to paint a picture of what life may look like once the worst of the novel coronavirus has passed, Dr. Fauci said he could see the country phasing back to normality by doing such things as limiting the number of people who can be at a restaurant or event at any one time.

“But can I as a resident of New York City hug my 77-year-old mother with vulnerable respiratory systems?” Linebaugh asked.

“I mean I don’t think you should do that now. You’re in New York City. You’re in a very vulnerable situation in regard to infection,” Fauci replied.

“But when this goes down, and gets down to almost zero, when we get to that, then I think what’s important… there is an antibody test that will be widely distributed pretty soon, in the next few weeks, that will allow you to know whether or not you’ve actually been infected.”

He said: “I can imagine a situation where you take an antibody test and you are absolutely positive that you were infected and you did well, then you could hug the heck out of your grandmother and not worry about it.”

Later in the podcast, Trump’s top coronavirus doctor said: “I don’t think we’re ever going to get back to free-flying lack of attention to what transmissibility of infections are. I think that people are going to be careful.

“I don’t think we should ever shake hands ever again, to be honest with you. Not only would it be good to prevent coronavirus disease, it probably would decrease instances of influenza dramatically in this country.”

Newsweek has contacted the NIAID for further comment and will update with any response.

President Trump revealed at the end of last month that social distancing guidelines would be extended until April 30. He also warned that he expected the novel coronavirus death toll to peak in a couple of weeks.

“The peak for death rates is likely to hit in two weeks,” Trump said on March 29. “Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before victory is won.”

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told Fox Business on Tuesday that he hoped the coronavirus shutdown would not go on for more than eight weeks, adding that the president was looking at how parts of the economy could be reopened.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advice on Using Face Coverings to Slow Spread of COVID-19

  • CDC recommends wearing a cloth face covering in public where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
  • A simple cloth face covering can help slow the spread of the virus by those infected and by those who do not exhibit symptoms.

  • Cloth face coverings should be washed regularly. A washing machine will suffice.

Hygiene advice

  • Clean hands frequently with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Wash hands after coughing or sneezing; when caring for the sick; before, during and after food preparation; before eating; after using the toilet; when hands are visibly dirty; and after handling animals or waste.
  • Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your hands, nose and mouth. Do not spit in public.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or bent elbow when coughing or sneezing. Discard the tissue immediately and clean your hands.

Medical advice

  • Avoid close contact with others if you have any symptoms.
  • Stay at home if you feel unwell, even with mild symptoms such as headache and runny nose, to avoid potential spread of the disease to medical facilities and other people.
  • If you develop serious symptoms (fever, cough, difficulty breathing) seek medical care early and contact local health authorities in advance.
  • Note any recent contact with others and travel details to provide to authorities who can trace and prevent spread of the disease.
  • Stay up to date on COVID-19 developments issued by health authorities and follow their guidance.

Mask and glove usage

  • Healthy individuals only need to wear a mask if taking care of a sick person.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective when used in combination with frequent hand cleaning.
  • Do not touch the mask while wearing it. Clean hands if you touch the mask.
  • Learn how to properly put on, remove and dispose of masks. Clean hands after disposing of the mask.
  • Do not reuse single-use masks.
  • Regularly washing bare hands is more effective against catching COVID-19 than wearing rubber gloves.
  • The COVID-19 virus can still be picked up on rubber gloves and transmitted by touching your face.

While New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo once called the coronavirus a “great equalizer”, data shows the virus has been anything but indiscriminate.

As the US climbed to more than 10,000 coronavirus deaths on Monday state health officials grappled with its disproportionate impact on black Americans. The disparity is especially stark in cities like New Orleans, Chicago and Detroit, where high concentrations of African Americans live.

Louisiana has the fourth largest number of Covid-19 cases in the country, and the majority of the Covid-19 deaths are in New Orleans, where black Americans constitute 60% of the population. “Slightly more than 70% of [coronavirus] deaths in Louisiana are African Americans,” the state’s governor, John Bel Edwards, said in a press conference on Monday. “That deserves more attention and we’re going to have to dig into that to see what we can do to slow that down.”

Midwestern cities including Detroit, Chicago and Milwaukee are also reporting an increasing imbalance.

Detroit, which is almost 80% black, has the most concentrated coronavirus cases in the state of Michigan. The death rate in the city accounts for 40% of overall deaths in the state.

In Chicago, which is 30% black, black Americans account for 70% of all coronavirus cases in the city and more than half of the state’s deaths. “We know all too well that there are general disparities in health outcomes that play along racial lines and the same may be true for this virus,” said Ngozi Esike, director of the Illinois department of public health.

African Americans face a higher risk of exposure to the virus, mostly on account of concentrating in urban areas and working in essential industries. Only 20% of black workers reported being eligible to work from home, compared with about 30% of their white counterparts, according to the Economic Policy Institute.

The virus has killed a high number of older black men because of this, though there have also been outbreaks among women and young African Americans in the south.

Meanwhile, experts also point to initial research showing a high prevalence of Covid-19 among those suffering from obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes – risk factors more common among black Americans. The virus is known to take a harsher toll on those with underlying health issues, and many hospitals are only testing those admitted for critical care.

Critics note that those risks are significantly exacerbated by racial inequities in healthcare, including facility closures and caps on public health insurance plans like Medicaid and Medicare. African Americans are twice as likely to lack health insurance compared with their white counterparts, and more likely to live in medically underserved areas, where primary care is sparse or expensive.

Unconscious racial bias can also contribute to unequal health outcomes, especially when health professionals are inexperienced with the culture of the community they serve, according to the Journal of General Internal Medicine. The Century Foundation found that healthcare providers located within majority African American or Latinx neighborhoods tend to provide lower-quality care.

Governor JB Pritkzer of Illinois acknowledged racism’s role in the state’s response to the outbreak, but he called it “a much broader problem” that won’t be solved in a matter of weeks. “It’s hard to make up for decades, maybe centuries, of inequality of application of healthcare to people of color,” he said.

And while the virus doesn’t discriminate, Dr Uché Blackstock, practitioner and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, a healthcare advocacy group, said government responses can.

She noted that as the virus first spread, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initially released testing guidelines that prioritized those who had traveled abroad. That meant Blackstock’s mostly black patients in low-income areas of Brooklyn and Queens were not tested as quickly as her more affluent, white clients in Manhattan who had the means to travel.

“What we know now is that Covid-19 had been circulating in our communities for much longer than we realized,” she said.

In Wisconsin, more than half of the state’s 86 confirmed deaths are in the city of Milwaukee. Limited testing and slow public outreach resulted in the number of cases in the city jumping from just one to more than 350 in less than two weeks. Health officials said the virus was probably introduced to the city after its first infected resident came in contact with someone from an affluent, white suburb nearby.

The state representative David Bowen, who is black, was the first Wisconsin lawmaker to be diagnosed with the virus. He told the Guardian that it was later confirmed he had passed the virus on to three others. Only one person was able to get tested.

“When white communities get sick, we in the black community are threatened to die from the same sickness, with lack of healthcare often leaving us to self-diagnose,” he said.

According to CDC guidelines, every state is legally required to track data on testing and treatment by race, as it has done during other outbreaks. Fewer than a dozen have released that data so far.

Last week congressional Democrats, including Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, both of Massachusetts, sent a letter demanding the CDC provide racial data. Without demographic data, health officials and lawmakers would not be able to address inequities in health outcomes and testing that might emerge, the letter said.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights also called out the CDC for not including those racial breakdowns. “This is a crisis like none other and officials in our state and federal governments play a large role here in bringing transparency,” said Kristen Clarke, committee president and executive director.

The committee sent letters urging state health departments, as well as Washington DC, to release their numbers. On Monday, Washington’s Mayor Muriel Bowser published coronavirus numbers by race for the first time: of the District’s 24 deaths, 14 were of black patients. After losing its majority-black status in 2011, Washington DC is now 45.5% African American.

Bowser dismissed questions on racial disparities, claiming “all deaths are a concern”. But for many black communities the threat of being infected by Covid-19 is proportional to their fear. According to Pew, 46% of black Americans viewed the coronavirus as a threat to their health, more than double their white counterparts.

“We know that black Americans are particularly vulnerable. This is a social, economic and racial justice issue,” Clarke said. “How one community is treated impacts all communities across the country.”

President Trump joins Sean Hannity for an exclusive interview to discuss the federal response to COVID-19 crisis, his hopes to reopen America and criticism of the World Health Organization.

President Trump slammed the World Health Organization for its “China-centric” views Tuesday, saying that the global health agency’s projections and pronouncements about the coronavirus pandemic have been routinely wrong.

In an interview with Fox News’ “Hannity,” Trump said that the WHO had “strongly recommended” against America restricting travel from China, one of their earliest flawed pronouncements.

“The World Health [Organization] – very China-centric, as I say –  basically everything was very positive for China,” Trump told host Sean Hannity. “Don’t close your borders, they strongly recommended … That would’ve been a disaster, that would’ve been a total disaster.

“And literally, they called every shot wrong,” the president added. “They didn’t want to say where [coronavirus] came from. For many years, we’ve been funding the World Health Organization.”

The president noted that while the U.S. financial contribution to the WHO dwarfs that of China, the United Nations entity seems to be very concerned about its relationship with Beijing.

“We’re going to look at it now because I think every step that they made, everything that they said was wrong and always in favor of China,” he said. “And ‘keep it open, don’t close the borders’. I didn’t listen to them, and I did what I wanted to do, and it was a good move.

“So it’s one of those things where we are the one that is the primary funder so we are going to take a very strong look at that.”

THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK STATE-BY-STATE

U.S. taxpayers contributed $513 million to the WHO in 2017, up from $341 million the prior year, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus had claimed Trump’s move to restrict travel from China at the end of January would create “fear and stigma with little health benefit.”

Trump also spoke Tuesday about his relationships with state governors during the pandemic, reserving particular praise for Democrats Andrew Cuomo of New York and Phil Murphy of New Jersey.

“I’m a diplomat, too,” Trump remarked. “Since I’ve become president, I have to view things a little bit differently. Andrew, I’ve known him a long time. He has a hard time getting the words out, ‘Thank you, you did a great job,’ but he’s been pretty good over the last week or so.”

Trump also praised the work of Democratic Govs. John Bel Edwards in Louisiana and Gavin Newsom in California, while declining to name which governors he thought may have done a poor job handling the pandemic.

“We’ll back the people where they have bad governors.”

    Dr. Anthony Fauci, the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director, said Americans should never shake hands again, in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus and other diseases.

    The leading infectious disease expert on President Donald Trump’s coronavirus task force told the Wall Street Journal that an end to handshaking would be good for reducing future transmissions of the novel coronavirus and would also cut the number of influenza cases.

    In a wide-ranging interview with The Journal podcast, the NIAID director hoped to see “light at the end of the tunnel” by the end of April.

    Speaking about the eventual return to normal life, Dr. Fauci said: “When you gradually come back, you don’t jump into it with both feet. You say what are the things you could still do and still approach normal. One of them is absolute compulsive hand washing. The other is you don’t ever shake anybody’s hands.”

    He also suggested that people might want to wear “cloth face protection” if they could not avoid being within six feet of others as life starts its return to normal.

    When the host Kate Linebaugh pointed out that Fauci and others on the coronavirus task force did not stand six feet apart at pandemic briefings, the disease expert said: “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good here. The task force group is a little bit different.

    “Since we’re around the president… it’s got to be clear that we’re not endangering him. So I get tested frequently and I get my temperature taken eight, nine times a day. Every time you go into a different room in the White House you get your temperature taken.

    “So I don’t think you should judge the use or not of masks and physical separation what you see with the task force for the rest of the country, it really is different.”

    Asked to paint a picture of what life may look like once the worst of the novel coronavirus has passed, Dr. Fauci said he could see the country phasing back to normality by doing such things as limiting the number of people who can be at a restaurant or event at any one time.

    “But can I as a resident of New York City hug my 77-year-old mother with vulnerable respiratory systems?” Linebaugh asked.

    “I mean I don’t think you should do that now. You’re in New York City. You’re in a very vulnerable situation in regard to infection,” Fauci replied.

    “But when this goes down, and gets down to almost zero, when we get to that, then I think what’s important… there is an antibody test that will be widely distributed pretty soon, in the next few weeks, that will allow you to know whether or not you’ve actually been infected.”

    He said: “I can imagine a situation where you take an antibody test and you are absolutely positive that you were infected and you did well, then you could hug the heck out of your grandmother and not worry about it.”

    Later in the podcast, Trump’s top coronavirus doctor said: “I don’t think we’re ever going to get back to free-flying lack of attention to what transmissibility of infections are. I think that people are going to be careful.

    “I don’t think we should ever shake hands ever again, to be honest with you. Not only would it be good to prevent coronavirus disease, it probably would decrease instances of influenza dramatically in this country.”

    Newsweek has contacted the NIAID for further comment and will update with any response.

    President Trump revealed at the end of last month that social distancing guidelines would be extended until April 30. He also warned that he expected the novel coronavirus death toll to peak in a couple of weeks.

    “The peak for death rates is likely to hit in two weeks,” Trump said on March 29. “Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before victory is won.”

    Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told Fox Business on Tuesday that he hoped the coronavirus shutdown would not go on for more than eight weeks, adding that the president was looking at how parts of the economy could be reopened.

    Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advice on Using Face Coverings to Slow Spread of COVID-19

    • CDC recommends wearing a cloth face covering in public where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
    • A simple cloth face covering can help slow the spread of the virus by those infected and by those who do not exhibit symptoms.

    • Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
    • Avoid touching your hands, nose and mouth. Do not spit in public.
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or bent elbow when coughing or sneezing. Discard the tissue immediately and clean your hands.

    Medical advice

    • Avoid close contact with others if you have any symptoms.
    • Stay at home if you feel unwell, even with mild symptoms such as headache and runny nose, to avoid potential spread of the disease to medical facilities and other people.
    • If you develop serious symptoms (fever, cough, difficulty breathing) seek medical care early and contact local health authorities in advance.
    • Note any recent contact with others and travel details to provide to authorities who can trace and prevent spread of the disease.
    • Stay up to date on COVID-19 developments issued by health authorities and follow their guidance.

    Mask and glove usage

    • Healthy individuals only need to wear a mask if taking care of a sick person.
    • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
    • Masks are effective when used in combination with frequent hand cleaning.
    • Do not touch the mask while wearing it. Clean hands if you touch the mask.
    • Learn how to properly put on, remove and dispose of masks. Clean hands after disposing of the mask.
    • Do not reuse single-use masks.
    • Regularly washing bare hands is more effective against catching COVID-19 than wearing rubber gloves.
    • The COVID-19 virus can still be picked up on rubber gloves and transmitted by touching your face.

    More than 300,000 people worldwide have recovered from a new coronavirus that’s spread to every inhabitable continent on the globe.

    On Tuesday, global cases rose to 1,426,096, with more than 387,547 cases in the United States, where the largest outbreak is occurring. Of those people, 300,054 have recovered, including 21,763 in the United States.

    Along with being a positive piece of news during a dark time, increased recoveries could potentially lead to even more people recovering. Those who have fully recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, have antibodies in their plasma, a liquid component of blood, that can attack the virus. By transferring their plasma to COVID-19 patients who are seriously ill, officials are hoping to give them some passive immunity to the virus.

    It’s unclear if the plasma transfer will be an effective treatment, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but some information suggests it might help people recover.

    Dr. Michael Joyner, a lead researcher of the Mayo Clinic’s convalescent plasma program, said they’d administer the product to a range of patients, including those already in the intensive care unit, to understand how it impacts the course of their virus. But, the number of people who can potentially be helped is dependent on survivors donating.

    “I think it’s very important for the general public to understand this is not like a drug where we can increase the number of shifts and ramp up the production line at a drug company,” Joyner said. “This is a biological product that has to be obtained from a specific set of patients.”

    Potential donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be in good health and feeling well and be symptom-free for at least 14 days prior to donation, according to the Red Cross.

    America isn’t the only country utilizing plasma from recovered patients as a potential treatment. Convalescent plasma was used to treat MERS patients in South Korea in 2015 and on March 31, the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) announced they’d allow plasma to be used in COVID-19 patients, as well.

    On Tuesday, Severance Hospital in South Korea said two patients recovered from COVID-19 after receiving a plasma treatment, according to the Korea Times. One patient, a 67-year-old woman with a medical history of hypertension, had been released from the hospital in “good shape.” The other patient, a 71-year-old “previously healthy” man, was successfully weaned off a ventilator, according to details published in the Journal of Korean Medical Science.

    Of the 10,331 cases in South Korea, according to the Johns Hopkins tracker, 6,694 have recovered, according to the tracker.

    The most recoveries, 77,410 people, have been in China, where officials reported 82,718 cases. Although, some officials and experts question whether China properly reported their cases. In Spain, the second-largest outbreak worldwide has had 140,618 cases and 43,208 recoveries.

    News of increased case counts and rising death tolls can easily foster fear and incite panic, so officials have encouraged people to consider the full context of the situation. Nurses in New York and in Europe have even started clapping as patients are discharged from the hospital and sharing the inspirational videos online.

    But, the outbreak could continue for months and it’ll be until at least the end of April before social distancing measures are lifted in the U.S. In a time when complacency can cost lives, officials are urging people to continue doing their part to slow the spread of the virus by practicing proper hand and respiratory hygiene and staying home.

    “We’re going to have a rough week, maybe a little more than a week, but there’s tremendous light at the end of that tunnel,” President Donald Trump said on Monday.

    It has also devastated the economy. Roughly 10 million people filed new unemployment claims over a two-week period, and the U.S. lost 701,000 jobs in early March — before the biggest wave of business shutdowns. 

    The CARES Act passed last month included direct payments to individuals, enhanced unemployment insurance, small business loans, health care funding and a $500 billion pool of loans and grants for corporations and states.

    Pelosi has called for another round of checks to individuals and to extend the unemployment benefits for two more months.
