Gunfire erupted at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Massachusetts, Friday afternoon, sending a 15-year-old girl to the hospital and causing a manhunt in the area that ended with two people in custody, police said.

Braintree police said two male suspects were taken into custody a short distance from the mall after they had fled on foot. The neighborhoods around the plaza had been urged to shelter in place and report any suspicious activity to police while officers were seen walking through backyards with guns drawn as they searched for the suspects.

The girl hurt in the shooting was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

While officers had swarmed the mall after the initial 4:43 p.m. call of shots fired, police eventually said they believed it was a targeted incident of violence, not a random act or an “active shooter” incident.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a fight broke out between two groups of people that may know each other, which escalated into a shooting, police said in a news conference Friday evening.

Police also said that two MBTA buses will be picking people up at the Mary E Flaherty Elementary School gate, at the edge of the plaza parking lot, as authorities attempt to reunite shoppers with their families.

Stores at the mall were placed on lockdown, with shoppers slowly and carefully escorted out of the mall by police. The lockdown was lifted after over two hours.

The shooting prompted chaos and confusion at the mall, according to witnesses who described a fight that escalated to gunfire.

A woman who was working inside Nordstrom’s at the time of the incident said she saw a large fight. She went to grab her phone to call police, when she heard the shooting, she said. The mall employee ran to the parking lot and was still visibly shaken when speaking to NBC10 Boston outside the mall.

“I just saw everything happen. I saw the guy shoot the gun. I don’t remember what he looks like. I kind of like blacked out for a minute,” she said. “I just saw them all fist fighting and screaming and then I heard shots and I just took cover and closed all the doors as soon as possible.”

Another woman who was shopping at Macy’s told NBC10 Boston she ducked inside a dressing room when a young girl came running through saying a man had a gun. After about eight minutes, the woman said, she escaped through a side door, where police met her and told her to run.

“I never experienced anything like this in my entire life,” she said. “It was the scariest thing I have ever seen in my entire life.”

A man who was inside the mall at the time of the incident told NBC10 Boston, “Everyone just started running, screaming ‘shooting, shooting, run!’ So we all just ran out of the mall, down the hall, out the door. I didn’t see anything. I heard one or two shots and then just ran.”

Braintree police are asking anyone with video of the incident to assist their investigation by sending it to tips@braintreema.gov

The shooting comes at the start of the July Fourth holiday weekend, when many stores offer sales. And malls in Massachusetts were only able to reopen last month, after being closed like many other businesses due to the coronavirus pandemic.

South Shore Plaza was the scene of another shooting three years ago. In that incident, in July 2017, the Braintree mall was also put on lockdown and evacuated. Authorities said at the time that incident appeared to be related to gang activity, with two gang members happening to cross paths inside of Macy’s.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases, which health officials look at to smooth day-to-day fluctuations in the numbers, has been on the rise in Illinois over the past two weeks, but the number of people being tested also is increasing, which can lead to higher numbers. The percentage of tests returning positive results, meanwhile, has remained relatively stable, hovering between 2% and 3% on a seven-day average.

Ghislaine is not the first of the Maxwell clan to face criminal charges.

Her older brothers, Ian and Kevin, found themselves in the dock after their father’s death in 1991 when a £460m hole was discovered in the Mirror Group pension fund.

The two men, as chairman and publisher of the newspaper group, were acquitted of alleged conspiracy to defraud charges in 1996 following a four-year legal ordeal.

The media tycoon himself would almost certainly have faced charges had he not been found drowned after apparently falling from his yacht – called the Lady Ghislaine – off the Tenerife coast.

Ian, 64, and Kevin, 61, were last heard of in public in 2018, launching a UK thinktank, Combating Jihadist Terrorism and Extremism, based in Mayfair, in central London.

Its website shows Ian still as a director, though there appears to be no mention of Kevin.

A rare interview, with the Sunday Times, to launch the thinktank, revealed the brothers had spent the previous 20 years pursuing business ventures mainly outside the UK. Ian told the newspaper it was time to step out of the shadows. “One had to let a certain amount of time pass. We also had to pick ourselves up literally in every sense,” he said.

The brothers, who until the Jeffrey Epstein case were the most prominent of Maxwell’s surviving seven children, continued to work throughout their 1990s legal ordeal. They are said to have pursued business opportunities in Russia and eastern Europe, before branching out into property, energy and telecoms, mostly outside the UK.

In 2015, in the middle of the Greek financial crisis, the brothers launched an organisation similar to The Prince’s Trust, which allowed Greek entrepreneurs to apply for funding and advice.

Kevin has enjoyed a colourful business career. In 1992, one year after his father’s death, he was declared the biggest personal bankruptcy in British history, with debts of £406m.

The bankruptcy was lifted three years later. In 2011, he was banned from running a company for eight years following an investigation by the Insolvency Service.

He told the Sunday Times: “I have been in voluntary arrangements at least three times when things have looked dicey.”

Like all the Maxwell children, the two were regularly bullied by a father who thought nothing of humiliating them in public. The youngest, Ghislaine, it is said, was a “Daddy’s girl” and had it easier.

Quickly flipping pages in her briefing binder, McEnany launched into an extended critique of the New York Times, which broke the Russia story last week. Reading from her notes, she rattled off a series of alleged errors published by the Times in its reporting about Russia over the past four years, including a claim that 17 intelligence agencies had agreed about Russian interference in the 2016 election. (Only four agencies had done so.)

As coronavirus cases continue to surge, officials across Southern California have opted to close the vast majority of beaches during the Fourth of July weekend over fears that holiday crowds could make the state’s already critical outbreak even worse.

Los Angeles County was the first to decide to close its shores. Initially, many Orange County communities seemed poised to keep beaches open. But as the holiday drew closer and other business sectors in the region were forced to close amid a troubling surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, several changed their minds.

Orange County officials on Wednesday announced the closure of bars, pubs, breweries and brewpubs that do not offer dine-in meals. Under the county’s order, establishments can serve alcohol only in the same transaction as a meal.

“While we would prefer not to close bars at this time, many of our neighboring counties have closed their bars, and it’s important to take precautions to ensure the safety of the general public,” Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel said.

Less than two hours after the county issued its new order, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that Orange County — along with 18 other counties — must immediately close bars and cease indoor operations at restaurants, wineries and tasting rooms, movie theaters, family entertainment centers, zoos, museums and card rooms. The new rules will remain in place for at least three weeks, Newsom said.

As COVID-19 numbers swell and Fourth of July approaches, L.A., Ventura, Santa Barbara county curtail beach activities while most parks, trails stay open

Los Angeles County

L.A. County will close its beaches starting Friday and ban fireworks displays in response to the alarming spike in coronavirus cases.

All public beaches, piers, public beach parking lots, beach bike paths “that traverse that sanded portion of the beach” and beach access points will be closed from 12:01 a.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Lifeguard towers will be closed, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Ocean Lifeguard Specialist Pono Barnes. He added that about 100 lifeguards will be on duty, with 50 patrolling in trucks at any given time.

“It wouldn’t be the scene you’d normally see on a weekend, but we will make sure beach patrons are heeding the advice of the Department of Public Health, as well as providing water coverage and life safety services,” Barnes said.

The ban on fireworks displays also applies to the entire Fourth of July weekend.

Ventura County

Ventura County beaches will be closed for the weekend, county health officials said Tuesday.

Beaches, beach parking lots and restrooms will close from Friday through Monday to discourage gatherings that could lead to the spread of the virus, officials said.

Orange County

In addition to a handful of city beach closures, a dozen county-operated beaches and beach parking lots will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

These stretches of coastline include Aliso Beach, Capistrano Beach, Salt Creek Beach, Baby Beach, Bayside Beach, Camel Point Beach, Poche Beach, Strands Beach, Table Rock Beach, Thousand Steps Beach, Treasure Island Beach and West Street Beach.

Newport Beach

Newport Beach is putting its beaches under hard closure from 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday after two lifeguards tested positive for COVID-19 and 23 were placed in quarantine.

Newport Beach Fire Chief Jeff Boyles said his division still has adequate staffing but would be “stretched pretty thin.”

Of the lifeguards in quarantine, one is showing symptoms of COVID-19 and hasn’t been tested yet.

“I cannot in good conscience add more onto our lifeguards,” Mayor Will O’Neill said at an emergency City Council meeting Wednesday approving the closure. “We just can’t responsibly ask our lifeguards to do more with less. We just can’t.”

Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach will close its beaches, beach parking lots and pier on Saturday.

“The potential, if we’re the only beach open, to be inundated certainly exists,” City Manager Oliver Chi said at a quickly called council meeting held a few hours after Newport’s. “We don’t want that situation.”

Councilwoman Barbara Delgleize said she received numerous emails from residents wanting the beaches closed for the weekend, a shift in tone from about a month ago.

She referenced a time when curtains separated smoking and nonsmoking sections on airplanes, “and they closed the curtain like that was really going to keep it away.”

“I kind of think we do that in Orange County,” she said. “L.A. is right next door. How is the wind blowing, for goodness sakes?”

Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach officials decided this week to close city-operated beaches entirely from 9 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday. The city had previously canceled its fireworks show in an effort to thin crowds but decided to close the beach to avoid groups of people gathering and possibly spreading the virus.

“Particularly on the Fourth of July when there were fireworks … it looked like sardines in a can,” Mayor Pro Tem Steve Dicterow said. “There was no space in between people. My concern is that even without the fireworks, there just may be a huge density of people on the beaches.”

Seal Beach

On Wednesday, Seal Beach followed with its own decision to close beaches, beach parking lots, volleyball courts, pier and restrooms. The amenities will reopen Sunday morning, but the city may extend the closure “if it is believed the reopening will be detrimental to the health of the community,” city officials said in a news release.

San Diego County

Oceanside will close beach parking lots from 8 a.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Monday, City Manager Deanna Lorson said Wednesday.

The decision came just hours after Newsom announced that all state beach parking lots would be closed over the three-day holiday weekend.

In Carlsbad, a city official said Wednesday that the city had no plans to close any lots, and no other San Diego County coastal cities had announced a decision as of late Wednesday. All county beaches remain open for surfing, swimming and other activities, but guidelines remain in place to wear facial coverings when near others and to avoid groups of nonfamily members.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — President Donald Trump will begin his Independence Day weekend on Friday with a patriotic display of fireworks at Mount Rushmore before a crowd of thousands, but even in a part of the country where many remain supportive of the president, the event has drawn controversy and protests.

Trump is expected to speak at the event, which has issued 7,500 tickets to watch fireworks that he previewed on Thursday as a “display like few people have seen.” The president will likely enjoy a show of support, with the state Republican Party selling T-shirts that feature Trump on the memorial alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. But concern about the coronavirus risk and wildfire danger from the fireworks, along with protests from Native American groups, will also greet the president.

Republican Gov. Kristi Noem, a Trump ally, has said social distancing won’t be required during the event and masks will be optional. Event organizers will provide masks to anyone who wants them and plan to screen attendees for symptoms of COVID-19.

The Republican mayor of the largest city near the monument, Rapid City, said he is watching for a spike in cases after the event, the Rapid City Journal reported.

“We’re going to have thousands of people, shoulder to shoulder at these events — someone in line to see a president and being able to see fireworks at Mount Rushmore — they are probably not likely to disqualify themself because they developed a cough the day of or the day before,” Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender said.

Leaders of several Native American tribes in the region also raised concerns that the event could lead to coronavirus outbreaks among their members, who they say are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 because of an underfunded health care system and chronic health conditions.

“The president is putting our tribal members at risk to stage a photo op at one of our most sacred sites,” said Harold Frazier, chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

Some Native American groups are using Trump’s visit to protest the Mount Rushmore memorial itself, pointing out that the Black Hills were taken from the Lakota people against treaty agreements.

Protests are expected in Keystone, the small town near the monument. Chase Iron Eyes, a spokesman for the Oglala Sioux president, said protesters would like to make their voice heard at the memorial itself, but it’s not clear they’ll be able to get close.

Security is expected to be tight, with the road leading up to Mount Rushmore shut down. The governor’s spokesperson, Maggie Seidel, would not say whether the South Dakota National Guard was being deployed, but said organizers are making sure it is a safe event.

But several people who once oversaw fire danger at the national memorial have said setting off fireworks over the forest is a bad idea that could lead to a large wildfire. Fireworks were called off after 2009 because a mountain pine beetle infestation increased the fire risks.

Noem pushed to get the fireworks resumed soon after she was elected, and enlisted Trump’s help. The president brushed aside fire concerns earlier this year, saying, “What can burn? It’s stone.”

The National Park Service studied the potential effect of the fireworks for this year and found they would be safe, though it noted that in a dry year, a large fire was a risk. Organizers are monitoring the fire conditions and were to decide Friday if the fireworks are safe.

Trump made no mention of the fire danger in fresh comments Thursday.

“They used to do it many years ago, and for some reason they were unable or unallowed to do it,” he said. “They just weren’t allowed to do it, and I opened it up and we’re going to have a tremendous July 3 and then we’re coming back here, celebrating the Fourth of July in Washington, D.C.”

KILLEEN, Texas — Authorities on Thursday released the names of two suspects — including a Fort Hood soldier who died Wednesday of a self-inflected gunshot wound — after both were tied to the disappearance of Spc. Vanessa Guillen.

U.S. Army officials at Fort Hood identified the soldier as 20-year-old Spc. Aaron David Robinson of Illinois. Hours later, United States Department of Justice officials identified the second suspect as Cecily Anne Aguilar, a 22-year-old Killeen resident.

Officials during a news conference at Fort Hood Thursday told reporters that Robinson ran away from his post Tuesday evening after reports that partial human remains were found near the Leon River in Bell County.

Local law enforcement later found Robinson in the 4700 block of East Rancier Avenue, east of Fort Hood near North Twin Creek Drive, where he pulled a gun and shot himself when confronted by Killeen police early Wednesday.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich voiced his concern Friday after seeing reports that “deep state Republicans” would back presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in November.

FORMER GEORGE W. BUSH OFFICIALS FORM NEW GROUP TO BACK BIDEN

“There are reports that a substantial number of ‘deep state Republicans’ are likely to endorse Biden,” he tweeted. “Since Biden is only the weakest of the Biden-PelosiSchumer team which would radically change America if they controlled the White House, House and Senate, it raises questions.”

Gingrich’s tweet comes following a Wednesday announcement that hundreds of former officials from President George W. Bush’s administration would endorse the former vice president and launch a new super PAC to persuade others in their party to do the same.

The group – titled “43 Alumni for Biden” – says its mission is to “unite and mobilize a community of historically Republican voters who are dismayed and disappointed by the damage done to our nation by Donald Trump’s presidency.”

Dr. Jill Biden told ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday that “a lot of Republicans” on the campaign trail told her that they’re going to vote for her husband.

“From what I’ve seen, a lot of Republicans are going to vote for Joe,” she stated, noting that “maybe they’re not saying it publicly.”

“When I was out there on the trail, a lot of people came up to me and said, ‘Jill, I’m a Republican, but I’m going to vote for your husband because he’s a moderate and he’s a steady leader, and we believe in Joe,'” she recalled.

“So, I think, of course, Trump has his supporters,” Jill Biden continued. “I think a lot of his supporters have become disillusioned, especially in the way he’s handled this pandemic. We’ve seen just these last two days the spike in the numbers of people who are getting sick and how he’s not even addressing it and taking care of American families. So, I have a little bit of a different take on it maybe than you do.”

According to the New York Post, Joe Biden’s campaign and Democratic committees raised $10 million more than President Trump and Republicans in June, hauling in a total of $141 million — a single-month high.

Republicans and the Trump reelection campaign brought in $131 million last month and $266 million in the second quarter; Democrats raised $282 million. That said, the president is expected to have more cash-on-hand than his challengers, with $300 million at the end of June.

Recent polling has favored Biden. A new Monmouth University poll released Thursday shows Biden with a 12-point nationwide lead over the president, 53 percent to 41 percent among registered voters.

A Tampa Bay Times analysis also shows Biden leading Trump in Florida by 5 percentage points: 47.4 percent to 42.5 percent. The Texas Tribune reported Thursday that Trump still holds a narrow lead in Texas by 4 percentage points.

Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale argues that the president “is dominating” the former vice president “when it comes to the most important factor, enthusiasm.”

CLICK HERE FOR THE FOX NEWS APP

“The unprecedented enthusiasm behind the president’s reelection efforts stands in stark contrast to the flat, almost nonexistent enthusiasm for Biden,” he asserted in a Thursday opinion piece in The Washington Post.

“When your opponent has been a career politician in Washington for 47 years and is campaigning on a return to the former status quo, it’s clear who the insider is and who remains the political outsider,” Parscale wrote. “Biden, like Hillary Clinton in 2016, is a career politician who has been a central part of the very Washington political system that voters opposed in 2016 and are doing so again.”

Heading into the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the U.S. recorded 52,291 new cases of the coronavirus Thursday, surpassing Wednesday’s record of 50,655, according to a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University  Covid-19 cases rise in 40 of 50 states over past two weeks.

It’s the largest single-day total in the U.S. since the pandemic began six months ago.

For the holiday weekend, many in New Jersey are flocking to the Jersey Shore. Boardwalks, outdoor dining, fireworks displays, water parks, amusement rides and casinos will also be open at some capacity this weekend.

That won’t be the case across some areas of Southern California, where Los Angeles and Ventura counties have closed beaches, and in Florida, where several counties including Broward and Palm Beach have done the same.

Two of the biggest news stories on Thursday were the strong jobs report and the stunning arrest of Jeffrey Epstein confidant Ghislaine Maxwell, but if viewers watched CNN’s primetime, they would have no idea either of them took place.

The latest jobs report showed that 4.8 million jobs were added to the U.S. economy in June, bringing the unemployment rate to 11.1 percent. Shortly after the report was released, news broke that Maxwell was arrested on multiple sex-abuse charges, including conspiracy to entice minors to engage in sexual acts.

While the liberal network covered both news items throughout the day, the stories were noticeably absent during the network’s primetime programming between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Instead, the channel mainly focused on the coronavirus outbreak.

MSNBC’S RACHEL MADDOW PREDICTED JUNE’S JOBS REPORT WOULD BE ‘ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE’

“Cuomo Prime Time” anchor Chris Cuomo had two hours of coverage after taking over for Don Lemon at 10 p.m. But despite having double the airtime, the stories were not touched.

Earlier in the day, CNN also raised eyebrows when it skipped President Trump’s remarks from the White House touting the positive economic numbers amid the rebound from national shutdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“CNN can decide not to cover whatever it chooses, but its choices are so transparently biased against the president that it damages CNN more than Trump. CNN is simply signaling to people to get their information elsewhere, which based on the ratings, a lot of people are doing,” Cornell Law School professor and media critic William A. Jacobson told Fox News about the network’s decision not to air the president’s remarks.

CNN did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

The positive jobs numbers were covered during primetime on Fox News’ “Hannity” and “The Ingraham Angle” and Maxwell’s arrest was covered on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and “Hannity.”

“MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes” covered both the jobs report and Maxwell’s arrest while “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” just covered the arrest, though host Lawrence O’Donnell notably stressed President Trump’s past ties to Maxwell and Epstein. “The Rachel Maddow Show” covered neither.

A federal judge in New Hampshire on Thursday ordered Ghislaine Maxwell sent to New York City to face charges that she conspired with her longtime friend, the late investor Jeffrey Epstein, to sexually abuse underage girls in the mid-1990s.

Maxwell was ordered into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to be transported to federal district court in Manhattan for a hearing on whether she should be granted bail pending the outcome of her case, in which she also is charged with perjury.

The order by Magistrate Judge Andrea Johnstone came during a so-called removal hearing, conducted remotely due to the coronavirus outbreak, in New Hampshire, where prosecutors had asked that Maxwell be detained without bail after her arrest Thursday morning in Bradford, New Hampshire.

Prosecutors had cited her risk of flight, her possession of multiple passports and her significant wealth in making that argument.

No court hearing has been set yet for Maxwell in Manhattan.

Maxwell, 58, was arrested at a 156-acre property in Bradford on a six-count indictment that was issued by a grand jury in Manhattan federal court.

The property had been purchased in December for $1 million by a limited liability corporation set up to conceal the actual buyer’s identity, according to prosecutors.

“The defendant is waiving the right to have a detention hearing in this district,” said Maxwell’s lawyer, Lawrence Vogelman.

Maxwell confirmed that she was waiving her right to a detention hearing and an identity hearing, agreeing with her lawyer that she wanted the detention hearing held in Manhattan federal court.

Florida’s surge of COVID-19 cases shows no signs of slowing down. The state Department of Heath reported Florida set another daily record Thursday, with 10,109 cases, surpassing Saturday’s record of 9,585 cases. That brings Florida’s total confirmed coronavirus cases to nearly 170,000 and a death toll of 3,617 (with 67 new deaths reported Thursday).

The new record continues a marked upturn in cases that began last month, weeks after Florida started allowing businesses to reopen. Gov. Ron DeSantis has defended that decision, saying that for most of April and May, the number of new cases and the percentage of those testing positive for the virus remained low. But then, DeSantis said, he believes Floridians became complacent. “After Memorial Day, when it fell out of the news,” he said, “people kind of just thought, it was over.”

On Thursday, he met with Vice President Pence and other federal officials in Tampa. Speaking afterward, Pence thanked DeSantis for his leadership in combating the coronavirus and in reopening Florida’s economy. “It’s not an either-or choice,” Pence said. “The economic comeback that’s underway is a demonstration that we don’t have to choose between opening America and the health of our people. We can do both.”

DeSantis has resisted calls for a statewide order requiring face coverings for people in public places. As the numbers of COVID-19 cases have risen, many counties and cities have adopted rules making face coverings mandatory.

One of the most recent to do so is Jacksonville, which is set to host President Trump’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in August.

Asked whether it will be safe for people over 65 or with underlying health conditions to attend the convention, Pence didn’t answer directly. “We’re excited about coming to Jacksonville,” he said. “I was at a meeting not long ago when I heard about very sophisticated plans to make sure it’s a safe and healthy environment.”

In Tampa, DeSantis was asked if he had any “personal responsibility” for the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Florida, while other states such as New York and New Jersey were seeing cases decline. “Well, do you give credit for Florida for having a much lower fatalities per 100,000 than all the states you just praised?” DeSantis shot back. “We have fewer fatalities than some of these states have just in nursing homes.”

At DeSantis’ direction, Florida has rolled back part of its reopening, closing all bars in the state last week to all but takeout business. Florida took that action as an increasing number of young people became infected with the virus and several bars closed voluntarily. To avoid encouraging large crowds, local governments in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties have ordered beaches closed through the July Fourth weekend.

And on Thursday night, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giménez announced a countywide daily curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice. He also rolled back the opening of entertainment facilities such as movie theaters, arcades, casinos, adult entertainment, concert houses and bowling alleys, effective Friday.

“This curfew is meant to stop people from venturing out and hanging out with friends in groups, which has shown to be spreading the virus rapidly,” he said.

DeSantis said he believes these measures are reminding residents they need to be careful. “Now, people understand, this thing doesn’t just go away,” he said. “You can do a lot of things if you take some small precautions.”

The rising numbers of coronavirus cases have raised questions about DeSantis’ leadership and his close ties to Trump, whom he consulted before allowing businesses to begin reopening.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala, who represents parts of Miami, said, “In their rush to reopen, they’ve put politics ahead of public health.”

Shalala said DeSantis made a mistake by not acting sooner to shut the state down. “We needed at the beginning to hit this virus with a hammer, to starve it all the way down,” she said. “We didn’t do the right thing in the beginning, and now we’re trying to play catch-up.”

President Trump said Thursday that his defeat by Joe Biden could mean a “1929 situation” for the economy — as Biden blamed Trump for mass job losses during the coronavirus pandemic.

The dueling campaign messages followed release of data showing the US economy added 4.8 million jobs in June, reducing unemployment to 11.1 percent, down from a peak of 14.7 percent in April.

Trump said he’s doing an “incredible job” to revive the economy, while his Democratic rival — speaking simultaneously — said Trump’s missteps were the reason for the economic downturn.

At the White House, Trump inspected US-made products before warning assembled businessmen that Democrats could unleash a Great Depression with new taxes and regulations.

“You’ll have a crash like you’ve never seen before if you put the wrong person in office. You’ll see things that you would not have believed are possible.”

If Democrats defeat him, “It will be a terrible, terrible sight. It might even be a 1929 situation,” Trump said, referring to the market plunge that preceded the Great Depression.

If he’s re-elected, Trump said, “You have a chance to have the greatest numbers in history, you’re almost there. We’re almost back to where we were from the standpoint of the stock market, think of that.”

But Biden, giving a speech by video feed, sought to dampen Trump’s victory lap on job numbers, saying the president was the reason tens of millions of people filed for unemployment benefits since March.

“Donald Trump has so badly bungled the response to coronavirus, and now has basically given up on responding at all,” the former vice president said, noting record-high figures for new US infections.

“Many more Americans — millions of them — would still have their job if Donald Trump had done his job,” Biden said. “Many of the jobs that have now come back should never have been lost in the first place. And for everyone whose job hasn’t come back, for everyone who doesn’t own stock, who can’t get the sweetheart loan through connections: Does this feel like a victory?”
