Defying warnings, millions in the US travel for Thanksgiving – The Associated Press

Millions of Americans took to the skies and the highways ahead of Thanksgiving at the risk of pouring gasoline on the coronavirus fire, disregarding increasingly dire warnings that they stay home and limit their holiday gatherings to members of their own household.

Those who are flying witnessed a distinctly 2020 landscape at the nation’s airports: plexiglass barriers in front of the ID stations, rapid virus testing sites inside terminals, masks in check-in areas and on board planes, and paperwork asking passengers to quarantine on arrival at their destination.

While the number of Americans traveling by air over the past several days was down dramatically from the same time last year, many pressed ahead with their holiday plans amid skyrocketing deaths, hospitalizations and confirmed infections across the U.S.

Some were tired of more than eight months of social distancing and determined to spend time with loved ones.

“I think with the holidays and everything, it’s so important right now, especially because people are so bummed out because of the whole pandemic,” said 25-year-old Cassidy Zerkle of Phoenix, who flew to Kansas City, Missouri, to visit family during what is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

She brought snacks and her own hand sanitizer and said the flight was half full. She had a row of seats to herself.

“As long as you’re maintaining your distance, you’re not touching stuff and you’re sanitizing your hands, people should see their families right now,” she said.

The coronavirus is blamed for more than 12.6 million confirmed infections and over 269,000 deaths in the U.S.

More than 88,000 people in the U.S. — an all-time high — were in the hospital with COVID-19 as of Tuesday, pushing the health care system in many places to the breaking point, and new cases of the virus have been setting records, soaring to an average of over 174,000 per day.

Deaths have surged to more than 1,600 per day, a mark last seen in May, when the crisis in the New York area was easing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local authorities have begged people not to travel and urged them to keep their Thanksgiving celebrations small.

“That’ll make sure that your extended family are around to celebrate Christmas and to celebrate the holidays next year,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said.

About 900,000 to 1 million people per day passed through U.S. airport checkpoints from Friday through Tuesday, a drop-off of around 60% from the same time a year ago. Still, those were some of the biggest crowds since the COVID-19 crisis took hold in the U.S. in March.

Last year, a record 26 million passengers and crew passed through U.S. airport screening in the 11-day period around Thanksgiving.

More Americans drive than fly during the holiday, and AAA has projected those numbers are also likely to be lower this year. How much lower the auto club has not said.

Many states and cities have adopted precautions. Travelers to Los Angeles, either by plane or train, were required to fill out an online form acknowledging California’s request that people quarantine for two weeks after arrival in the state.

Thea Zunick, 40, boarded a flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Florida to see her 90-year-old grandmother and her parents.

“We’ve all kind of decided like it’s worth the risk,” Zunick said. “But I wanted to make sure that all the efforts that I’ve made to stay healthy isn’t undone by other people’s carelessness. And absolutely, I know that I’m taking a risk by flying. I know that, but sometimes it’s necessary.”

She isolated at home for days before the trip, got a COVID-19 test that came back negative, and made sure to choose an early and direct flight. She also masked up and layered a face shield on top.

“I felt like an astronaut, to be honest,” Zunick said.

Once at the airport, Zunick said, she saw poor adherence to mask-wearing, loose enforcement of rules, long lines to check baggage and a disregard for social distancing in security lines.

Once she boarded her completely full flight, with middle seats occupied, she watched passengers eat and drink with their masks pulled down and sat next to a passenger wearing a loose bandanna, prompting her to call over a flight attendant, she said.

“I said to the stewardess, ‘Hey, the person next to me, is that permitted? Because it’s making me uncomfortable.’ They’re like, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s fine.’ But it’s not,” Zunick said. “The bottom of it was open. And it was tied so loosely that it kept falling down throughout the flight and he kept messing with it and trying to make it tighter and pull it up.”

Anne Moore, a 60-year-old woman from Chicago, flew to Albany, New York, to be with her daughter for the holiday. Her daughter is a senior at Dartmouth University, and Moore and her husband were worried about her driving back to Illinois by herself.

Before the spike, the family had planned to hold a Thanksgiving gathering of fewer than 10 people. But instead it will be just Moore, her husband and her daughter.

“I have friends who are alone. And I’m not inviting them. And I feel badly about that,” she said. “We’ll take a walk or something instead. But yeah, the three of us are isolating.”

Joe Biden tamps down idea of nominating Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders for Cabinet jobs – USA TODAY

President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday tamped down the possibility of nominating Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders to Cabinet positions, and instead suggested he would like too keep them in the Senate to push forward his progressive agenda.

During an interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt, the reporter asked Biden if he had talked to his former primary rivals about Cabinet roles.

“We already have significant representation among progressives in our administration, but there’s nothing really off the table,” the president-elect said.

Biden said there would be downsides to tapping a Democratic House or Senate member.

“One thing is really critical, taking someone out of the Senate, taking someone out of the House, particularly a person of consequence, is a really difficult decision that would have to be made,” he said. “I have a very ambitious, very progressive agenda, and it’s going to take really strong leaders in the House and Senate to get it done.”

Sanders has reportedly been vying for the labor secretary position. During an interview with CNN this month, Sanders said he would accept the nomination if Biden appointed him to that position.

“If I had a portfolio that allowed me to stand up and fight for working families, would I do it? Yes, I would,” Sanders said.

Progressives have also pushed for Warren to be nominated as Treasury secretary. However, Biden will appoint Janet Yellen, who is supported by both moderates and progressives.

Biden has announced several appointments to his administration this week, including Alejandro Mayorkas as secretary of Homeland Security, who would be the first immigrant and first Latino to hold the post; Antony Blinken as secretary of state; Linda Thomas-Greenfield as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations; and Avril Haines to lead the U.S. intelligence community.

Another Trump campaign advisor tests positive for coronavirus, as Giuliani heads to Gettysburg – CNBC

A top advisor to President Donald Trump‘s campaign said Wednesday that he has tested positive for the coronavirus, six days after attending a controversial press conference led by Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

The disclosure of the Covid-19 diagnosis by Boris Epshteyn came as Giuliani, the Trump lawyer who led that press conference, headed to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for what was being called a hearing by the Pennsylvania Senate Majority Policy Committee on the state’s election.

Giuliani’s son, Andrew, who also attended his father’s press conference Thursday at the Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington, revealed last Friday that he tested positive for the coronavirus. Andrew Giuliani is a White House special assistant to Trump.

The Gettysburg hearing comes a day after Pennsylvania certified its election results showing a win there for President-elect Joe Biden, the former Democratic vice president.

Epshteyn in a tweet said, “I am experiencing mild symptoms, and am following all appropriate protocols, including quarantining and contact tracing.”

Jenna Ellis, a senior legal advisor to the campaign, who also was at the press conference, tweeted about a half hour before Epshteyn’s tweet that she was “Headed to Gettysburg, PA with @RudyGiuliani.”

The campaign has said that the hearing, called by Republican state senators, will hear testimony from people who have submitted affidavits claiming they were aware of election fraud.

Epshteyn, a former special assistant to Trump, was physically very close to both Giuliani and Ellis during the press conference, where those two lawyers and then-campaign lawyer Sidney Powell made broad claims of election fraud for which they have offered no evidence.

During that press conference, Rudy Giuliani was sweating heavily, so much so that what appeared to be hair dye ran down both of his cheeks.

Giuliani is leading legal efforts by the Trump campaign to challenge the outcomes of voting results in multiple states, in a long-shot bid to reverse Biden’s projected victory in the Electoral College.

Legal experts have given those efforts little chance of succeeding.

On Saturday, a federal judge in Pennsylvania, who is a former Republican official, brutally dismissed Giuliani’s arguments in a lawsuit seeking to block certification of the state’s voting tally, saying that they were “without merit.”

The Trump campaign and its allies have lost or withdrawn about 36 legal challenges to ballots and voting processes around the country.

Biden currently is projected to win 306 electoral votes, 36 more than needed to secure a White House victory.

Gettysburg is the site of the most famous battle in the U.S. Civil War. Over three days in July 1863, Union forces defeated traitorous Confederate forces led by Robert E. Lee, thwarting their bid to invade the North.

Four months later, President Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, delivered the famed Gettysburg Address at the battle site, urging his listeners to act so that “these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

More votes were cast in the 2020 presidential election than in any other U.S. election in history, and the turnout rate was the highest in more than a century.

President-elect Joe Biden has now earned 80 million votes, and ballots are still being counted. That is by far the most votes cast for any presidential candidate in U.S. history. President Trump holds the distinction, however, of earning the second-most votes all time. About 74 million Americans voted for him.

Biden’s total shatters the 2008 record of 69.5 million votes cast for Barack Obama. The former vice president was also on that ticket as Obama’s running mate.

Overall, more than 156 million Americans cast ballots in 2020, a number that will continue to climb in coming days as more results are reported. The final vote total is likely to get to about 158 million. That is more than 20 million higher than the 2016 record of 137 million votes cast.

The turnout rate is estimated to be 66.5% of eligible voters, the highest since 1900, according to the United States Elections Project.

These are remarkable figures with voting taking place in the midst of a worldwide pandemic that has led to statewide lockdowns and more than 250,000 Americans dead in less than nine months. It also significantly reduced the abilities of campaigns to do in-person door knocking and voter registration ahead of the election.

As the coronavirus became more widespread, most states adjusted their voting rules, including broadening access to early voting. As a result, some two-thirds of voters cast their ballots early, far surpassing 2016 rates.

The sky-high turnout is due, in part, to the expanded mail-in voting. Traditionally, states that predominantly use voting by mail have higher participation rates than other states because of the reduced obstacle of waiting in line in person.

The other reason, though, is Trump, who remains one of the most polarizing figures in American political history. Lots of people turned out for and against him.

Democrats have now won the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections. A Republican hasn’t won it since George W. Bush’s reelection in 2004.

And yet, Democrats have only won the presidency in five of those elections because of the Electoral College. Democrats are concentrated on the coasts and in cities, making it harder to win the White House than their popular vote margins might suggest.

In fact, in this election, Biden won the national popular vote by some 6 million votes so far, more than double Hillary Clinton’s margin over Trump four years ago. But just 44,000 votes in Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin separated Biden and Trump from a tie in the Electoral College.

Though Biden’s margin is significant, it will likely go down as the 15th widest in U.S. history.

Considering these polarizing times, it is a feat, but it’s hardly a mandate. That’s because polarization seemed to harden in this election. Blue areas (cities and Democratic-leaning suburbs) became bluer, and red areas (small towns and more rural places) became redder.

Trump hasn’t helped bridge the divide, as he still has yet to concede and until this week delayed the transfer of power. All of it will make for a challenge for Biden to govern, while needing to hit the ground running to address COVID-19 and the economy, as well as racial inequality.

L.A. stay-at-home rules take shape as COVID-19 spike worsens – Los Angeles Times

With coronavirus cases and COVID-19 deaths surging at an alarming rate, Los Angeles County officials Tuesday began to outline a new limited Safer at Home order aimed at slowing the virus spread while sticking with an outdoor dining ban amid a growing outcry.

The new restrictions are looking increasingly likely as daily coronavirus infections spike to unprecedented levels, increasing stress on hospitals amid concern more people will be infected during the Thanksgiving holiday. But it also appears that a new stay-at-home order that had been suggested as a possibility last week would fall far short of the one imposed during the first months of the pandemic in the spring.

The March order closed all but essential businesses and left many people at home except for trips to such places as supermarkets and medical offices. But officials suggested Tuesday the new rules would allow many businesses to remain open but with limited customer capacity. More details might be provided today.

“We are not completely shutting down everything,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis.

“Nonessential businesses will be very much open; gyms will be open outdoors; zoos will be open; hair salons; mini-golf and go-karts will be open with reduced capacity,” supervisor Janice Hahn said.

The proposed directives are all designed to keep people in their homes as much as possible, reduce capacity at sites where people from different households interact with each other, and curtail some nonessential activities.

They include:

A ban on all gatherings among people who don’t live in the same household, with exceptions for outdoor church services and outdoor protests. Currently, small gatherings are allowed outdoors, but capped at up to 15 people with no more than three households allowed.
A reduction in occupancy of essential retail stores to 35% of capacity; for grocery stores, that would be a reduction from the current cap of 50% capacity.
A reduction in capacity at nonessential retail stores and libraries to 20%; currently, they can hold up to 25% of capacity.
The ordered closure of playgrounds that are not part of a school or child-care center; swimming pools that serve members of more than one household, although regulated lap swimming can continue; and card rooms.

Beaches, trails and parks would remain open, as would outdoor venues like golf courses, tennis courts, skate parks, and community gardens.

Child-care and day care, schools and day camps that have opened under current protocols would be able to remain open as is the case under existing rules, with one new requirement: an ordered closure for 14 days should an outbreak occur, which is defined as three or more cases over a two-week period.

Activities that can continue include professional sports without spectators and outdoor youth sports for conditioning and skill building only; tournaments and competitions have not been allowed to resume.

And the county would still need to abide by the state’s limited overnight stay-at-home order, which says nonessential activities outside the home with members of other households must end between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

It was only a week ago that county officials raised the prospect of a new stay-at-home order, which they said would only generally allow essential workers and people securing essential services to leave their homes.

But since then, the Los Angeles County director of public health, Barbara Ferrer, said a sweeping shutdown is not necessary because the county has more tools to handle COVID-19 compared with the spring, when less was known about the disease. “We have much more capacity on testing now, which allows us to do a better job quickly identifying people who are positive,” Ferrer said.

“We’ve learned some things from that previous time,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, the L.A. County health officer. “There were certain things that we didn’t have in place, in terms of universal face covering.”

Officials did not elaborate on the timing of the new order. But conditions were continuing to deteriorate. On Tuesday, 45 additional deaths were reported in L.A. County, the highest single-day total since early September. The deaths of L.A. County residents are now reported at triple the daily rate they were on Nov. 3.

Hospitalizations were also climbing at rapid rates, with nearly 1,700 people in the hospital with COVID-19 on Tuesday, up from nearly 800 on Oct. 23. Officials warned that unless county residents change their behavior on a widespread scale, the existing supply of staffed hospital beds will soon be exhausted.

While L.A. County has been particularly hard hit, the state as a whole is wrestling with an avalanche of coronavirus cases, and officials expect the number of daily deaths will become even worse than the summer peak.

“Certainly, the numbers of deaths will likely go up. Just as we are exceeding our highest-ever numbers of cases, and beginning to see our hospital systems pressed with COVID beyond where they’ve ever been pressed before, the idea that the numbers of deaths could exceed where we’ve been before is also real and true,” Dr. Mark Ghaly, the California health and human services secretary, said Tuesday.

The state recorded 20,654 cases Monday, shattering the previous single-day record of 13,412 infections, according to an independent Times survey of California counties. L.A. County recorded nearly 6,200 cases Monday, which was also a daily record, and more than 3,700 on Tuesday.

“We are truly in the midst of a surge here in California,” Ghaly said.

Statewide, the daily average of new coronavirus cases, calculated over a seven-day period, more than doubled in the past two weeks, a Times analysis found. Most of California’s counties also reported the same doubling or worse.

Imperial County has seen its daily average of coronavirus cases nearly quadruple in the last two weeks. That county has been forced to erect a 50-bed tent to help deal with a surge in COVID-19 patients and has requested dozens of additional healthcare workers, including 33 intensive care unit nurses, three lab scientists, 21 emergency room nurses and six respiratory therapists, officials said last week.

Imperial County has also seen its coronavirus test positivity rate double in the course of a month, from 10.5% to 23.8%.

Between Nov. 1 and Monday, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 statewide has more than doubled, Ghaly said, from about 2,500 to more than 5,800. Some hospitals’ intensive care units “are already being pressed to a significant degree,” he added.

“When you see the numbers more than double in just under three weeks, we’re concerned,” Ghaly said.

Los Angeles County health leaders have made the same point, saying they worry cases could spike much more after the Thanksgiving holiday.

But their efforts to restrict movements are meeting with growing backlash. The suspension of outdoor restaurant dining was met with anger and desperation from restaurateurs, who have been reeling from the shutdown. Outdoor dining offered a lifeline, and many owners and workers felt they were doing everything they could to keep their establishments safe.

Others questioned the wisdom or efficacy of the restriction, and demanded to see the data justifying such a move.

A divided Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors rejected calls Tuesday to walk back the ban on in-person outdoor dining and restrict restaurants — along with breweries and wineries — just to takeout and delivery service beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger, whose district includes Santa Clarita, much of north L.A. County and the northern San Gabriel Valley, said the suspension “will punish a sector that is unfairly shouldering the burden” — and added that she’s “concerned that this county has taken the approach of everything should be closed, unless we have a good reason to open it.”

“I feel that what is happening today is truly going to devastate not only the workers but their families,” Barger said.

Barger and Hahn voted to block the ban. But the board majority was swayed after county health officials said it was clear that people gathering with others outside their immediate families and removing their masks to eat increased the risk of new infections.

“This is the only business that allows its customers to remain, and often for quite a while, unmasked,” said Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who represents parts of the Westside, the San Fernando Valley and Malibu. “And that, I think, is enough to single it out right there. We tried, but the numbers have gone up.”

Solis, who represents East L.A., southeast L.A. County and parts of the San Gabriel Valley, said she was at a private hospital over the weekend because her mother had a health issue and was alarmed at what she saw.

“I’ve never in my life seen the corridors in the ER completely full,” Solis said. “There were no rooms available to treat COVID patients. That to me was very startling.”

The 3-to-2 board vote to go forward with the restrictions came shortly after the Los Angeles City Council voted 11 to 3 Tuesday to seek a repeal of the outdoor dining restrictions. The vote amounted to a recommendation because the city is generally governed by the county’s public health rules.

“This will be the final nail in their coffin,” said Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez of local restaurants.

Councilman Mike Bonin, who cast a dissenting vote along with members Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Curren Price, said some restaurants have set up outdoor dining areas with barriers so significant that their patrons are effectively experiencing indoor dining. He also argued that the council, which lacks its own health department, does not have a team of experts to guide them on their decision.

The California Restaurant Assn. filed a lawsuit challenging the ban by county health officials and sought an emergency order from a judge halting the new rules from taking effect.

Attorneys for the association asked Judge James Chalfant to issue an order to stop the closures from going forward unless health officials can provide scientific evidence backing their decision to impose the dining ban. Chalfant denied the request, calling the evidence the association presented “insufficient” to overturn the ban or to require the county to provide the data in his ruling.

The judge also said that in the absence of “solid evidence” from the association showing the dining ban was inappropriate, he would not schedule further hearings to consider whether the ban should be overturned. If new evidence comes to light, Chalfant said the association is free to bring it to him.

Critics of the outdoor dining ban did claim a victory in Pasadena, which said will allow restaurants to continue outdoor dining despite the county order. The city has its own Department of Public Health that can issue independent orders, and until now had generally followed the lead of Los Angeles County.

“We will assess our data daily but at this point will not close down restaurants on Wednesday or the near future,” said Lisa Derderian, spokeswoman for the city of Pasadena.

San Francisco, which has seen its own COVID-19 case numbers surge but is still in much better shape than Los Angeles County, announced Tuesday it would keep outdoor dining open for now. Still, officials warned the virus was spreading fast. The rate at which coronavirus tests turned up positive has more than doubled in the last month. Hospitalization rates for COVID-19 in the city have doubled since the end of the month.

“This is a once-in-a-century pandemic,” said Dr. Grant Colfax, the city’s public health director. “This not the time to throw caution to the wind.”

Ga. Sen. Perdue boosts wealth with well-timed stock trades – ABC News

WASHINGTON — As the ravages of the novel coronavirus forced millions of people out of work, shuttered businesses and shrank the value of retirement accounts, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged to a three-year low.

But for Sen. David Perdue, a Georgia Republican, the crisis last March signaled something else: a stock buying opportunity.

And for the second time in less than two months, Perdue’s timing was impeccable. He avoided a sharp loss and reaped a stunning gain by selling and then buying the same stock: Cardlytics, an Atlanta-based financial technology company on whose board of directors he once served.

On Jan. 23, as word spread through Congress that the coronavirus posed a major economic and public health threat, Perdue sold off $1 million to $5 million in Cardlytics stock at $86 a share before it plunged, according to congressional disclosures.

Weeks later, in March, after the company’s stock plunged further following an unexpected leadership shakeup and lower-than-forecast earnings, Perdue bought the stock back for $30 a share, investing between $200,000 and $500,000.

Those shares have now quadrupled in value, closing at $121 a share on Tuesday.

The Cardlytics transactions were just a slice of a large number of investment decisions made in the early days of the pandemic by Perdue and other senators. They stirred public outrage after it became clear that some members of Congress had been briefed on the economic and health threat the virus posed. The transactions were mentioned briefly in a story published by the Intercept in May.

Now that Perdue is locked in a pitched battle for reelection in a Jan. 5 runoff, his trades during a public health and economic crisis have become an issue in what already has become a negative, expensive campaign that will determine which party controls the Senate.

There is no evidence that Perdue, who is among the wealthier members of the Senate, acted on information gained as a member of Congress or through his long-standing relationship with company officials. It’s illegal to use nonpublic information gained as a company insider or member of Congress to make investment decisions.

But legal experts say the timing of his sale, the fact that he quickly bought Cardlytics stock back when it had lost two-thirds of its market value and his close ties to company officials all warrant scrutiny.

“This does seem suspicious,” said John C. Coffee Jr., a Columbia University law school professor who specializes in corporate and securities issues. But he added, “You need more than suspicions to convict.”

The Perdue campaign declined a request for an interview with the senator. In a statement, Perdue spokesperson John Burke said the senator had been cleared of wrongdoing but did not provide details.

“The bi-partisan Senate Ethics Committee, DOJ and SEC all independently and swiftly cleared Senator Perdue months ago, which was reported on,” Burke said.

Perdue’s opponent, Democrat Jon Ossoff, has seized on his stock trading while trying to brand him as a “crook.”

Perdue is not the only senator on the ballot in Georgia. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, also a Republican, is running against Democrat Raphael Warnock in a bid to complete the remainder of retired Sen. Johnny Isakson’s term.

Perdue’s Cardlytics transactions fit into a broader pattern of stock moves he made when the coronavirus first struck the U.S.

At the time, Perdue publicly maintained that the economy was strong and praised President Donald Trump during a Feb. 24 interview on Fox News Channel for “executing the greatest economic turnaround in U.S. history.”

A series of swift transactions in his portfolio told a different story, however, showing the senator dumped some company stocks, while investing in others — like protective equipment maker DuPont and pharmaceutical company Pfizer — that were poised to do well during the pandemic.

Perdue has previously said that outside financial advisers make most of his trades.

But Donna Nagy, an Indiana University law professor, said that type of arrangement doesn’t preclude Perdue from directing an adviser to make specific transactions. She said one way for members of Congress to avoid questions about their financial holdings is to put them in a blind trust, which Perdue has not done.

“All of these questions about the motivations behind our members of Congress and their personal securities trading could be alleviated if Congress passed a law that limited investments,” said Nagy, who specializes in securities law. “Ordinary citizens should not have to question members of Congress about their investments.”

The issue was enough of a liability that Perdue abruptly sold off between $3.2 million and $9.4 million of his stock portfolio over a four-day period in mid-April, according to an Associated Press review of mandatory financial disclosures he has submitted to the Senate. He did not sell his stock in Cardlytics.

Still, Perdue has largely avoided the same degree of scrutiny faced by some of his colleagues.

Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina drew the most attention and stepped down as Senate Intelligence Committee chair amid a probe of his sale of upward of $1.7 million in stock, which came when he was privately warning some well-heeled constituents about the virus while publicly downplaying the threat.

Cardlytics works at the intersection of banking and online marketing. It helps run rewards programs for financial institutions, including Wells Fargo, using data the banks have gathered on their customers to market to them — similar to what Facebook does with targeted ads.

The company did not respond to a request for comment.

After the March turmoil, its share price dramatically rebounded. Lynne Laube, Cardlytics’ current CEO, said the pandemic had a lot to do with it, driving consumer interest in savings programs.

“I hate to say this pandemic is playing in our favor, but it’s playing in our favor,” she said during an earnings call in May.

Perdue acquired 75,000 shares in Cardlytics through stock options offered for his service on the company’s board from 2010 to 2014, when he stepped down after winning his Senate seat, Securities and Exchange Commission filings show. The company, which at the time had not yet gone public, also offered him options that would become available in October 2020 and January 2022.

Perdue’s latest financial disclosures do not indicate whether he has exercised the options that became available in October.

But according to Coffee, the Columbia University law professor, it’s an unusual move by the company.

“I’ve never seen options extended from 2014 to 2022,” he said. “That’s a very long extension.”

While Perdue left the company’s board, he has maintained ties to some of its executives, who have donated more than $30,000 to his political committees. Donations made to Perdue account for nearly 80% of all giving to federal candidates by Cardlytics employees over the past decade, records show.

Perdue, meanwhile, has used social media to publicize the company. In August 2016, he took a tour of its office and posed for a photo with Laube and then-CEO Scott Grimes, which he posted to Facebook. In fall 2019, he introduced Laube and Grimes at a gala in Atlanta, where they received a business achievement award.

Isakson, who served with Perdue, took steps to avoid the type of scrutiny Perdue is now facing. Isakson, a Republican, put most of his own holdings in a blind trust after some of his assets drew unwanted attention in 2012.

“I said I need to be as patently pure and patently clean as anybody, and the best way to do that is a blind trust,” Isakson, who served on the Senate’s finance and ethics committees, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution in 2017. “I don’t know what I own.”

Will Trump ever concede to Biden? Approving the transition may be as close as he gets to that, aides say – USA TODAY

WASHINGTON – When President Donald Trump signed off this week on formally allowing President-elect Joe Biden’s transition to move forward, it was a decision he arrived at after a series of embarrassing setbacks in his efforts to challenge the results of the Nov. 3 election.

Though Trump made clear he intends to keep up his election legal battle, it was a turning point after conversations over the weekend with top aides about how he could approve a transition without conceding the race.

Trump faced dwindling prospects for overturning the election through the courts, a point driven home by a decision in Pennsylvania over the weekend in which a federal judge dismissed one of his campaign’s lawsuits as a “Frankenstein’s Monster.”

White House officials speaking on the condition of anonymity said the government is preparing for Biden to take over Jan. 20, but the president made no direct reference to the election in two brief appearances Tuesday and continued to hammer away on Twitter with evidence-free claims of widespread fraud.

Facing mounting criticism from fellow Republicans, court stumbles, the certification of Biden’s lead in several battleground states and internal squabbling over his own legal team, Trump was gradually talked by aides into acknowledging the need to begin a transition – an outcome that some close to the president predicted could be the closest he will get to a formal concession.

Biden transition gets green light:Trump administration relents on refusal to provide resources

“In the best interest of our Country,” Trump tweeted this week, he recommended that the official machinery of the federal government “do what needs to be done with regard to initial protocols,” a nod to beginning the transition.

Trump’s acknowledgment that the General Services Administration should begin that process, which will allow federal agencies – including those battling COVID-19 – to interface with the Biden transition, was a break from his frequent assertions, leveled without evidence, that voter fraud robbed him of reelection.

Speaking for about a minute at the White House on Tuesday, the president touted growth in the stock market but did not address the election. He was similarly reticent hours later in the Rose Garden, where he honored the tradition of pardoning a turkey before Thanksgiving.

“And as I say, America First,” Trump said, repeating a campaign slogan. “We shouldn’t go away from that.”

Trump campaign aides dismissed the significance of the transition announcement, and the president vowed on Twitter to continue his fight despite the series of setbacks undermining his case.

Friday, Michigan state lawmakers left a meeting at the White House saying they had seen no evidence indicating Biden’s win was in error. The same day, Georgia certified the Democrat’s narrow victory there.

The next day, a federal judge in Pennsylvania dismissed a Trump lawsuit as an amalgamation of “strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations.”

Sunday, Trump ordered his team to distance itself from attorney Sidney Powell, whose claims days earlier of an anti-Trump election conspiracy drew ridicule from across the political spectrum. By Monday, Michigan certified its election results.

A presidential tradition:If Trump still won’t concede to Biden, he’ll break more than a century of tradition

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and counsel Pat Cipollone were among the aides who spoke with the president about the transition. Trump tweeted his announcement to go ahead minutes after the GSA wrote Biden to confirm the decision.

If Trump doesn’t concede, he would break with 124 years of American history – which could rile partisanship and create divisions within the Republican Party. Trump and some aides see a strategy in continuing the fight. Some expect Trump to complain about the election for the rest of his public life, using it to retain a core group of supporters, raise money and perhaps make another presidential run in 2024.

Although Trump has no plans to call off lawsuits and election protests, aides said, Meadows wrote in an email to staff late Monday that the administration would “comply with all actions needed to ensure the smooth transfer of power.”

Michigan certification:State certifies results finding Biden the winner

White House officials cleared Biden on Tuesday to receive the same daily intelligence briefings that Trump does, according to a White House official speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Trump returned to the lawsuits in a series of tweets Tuesday, asserting that “we are fighting hard.” He retweeted a message from about a week ago that “I concede NOTHING!!!!!”

Trump downplayed the significance of the GSA’s announcement, saying the agency had been “terrific” and had “done a great job,” but it “does not determine who the next President of the United States will be.”

Legal options dwindle

Rick Gates, a 2016 campaign aide to Trump, said the president’s short-term goal is to get one or more of his election lawsuits before the Supreme Court, and there’s no way to know when that might happen. Gates said he expects Trump to fight until at least the meeting of the Electoral College scheduled for Dec. 14 – and probably beyond.

“However,” Gates said, “with each passing day, the clock is narrowing his constitutional options considerably.”

Biden continued to roll out top level appointments, including several national security positions. In Delaware on Tuesday, Biden said he would nominate longtime confidant Antony Blinken as secretary of state and named Jake Sullivan, who worked for Biden when he was vice president, as his national security adviser.

Biden said he was “pleased” the administration was moving toward a “smooth and peaceful transition” of power.

“And as more states certify the results of this election, there’s progress to wrap up our victory,” he said.

Trump and his team have filed lawsuits, demanded recounts and protested procedures in several states, an effort designed to throw out ballots or block certification of Biden’s victories in Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Those initiatives have failed, and legal experts said there is little evidence of widespread fraud.

Pressure on Trump:Former Republican national security officials warn Trump must allow transition

Trump is running out of battles to fight, a point underscored by an increasing number of Republican allies.

Minutes after Michigan certified its results, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., called on Trump to “put the country first and have a prompt and orderly transition to help the new administration succeed.”

In an op-ed for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said he has supported Trump’s efforts, but “there is no evidence as of now of any widespread fraud or irregularities that would change the result in any state.”

An orderly transition is important, Portman said, and “it is now time to expeditiously resolve any outstanding questions and move forward.”

One sign of Trump’s commitment to complaint: He canceled his Thanksgiving weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, aides said, so he could be seen at the White House in charge of the election protest.

Trump took part in the annual pardoning of the national Thanksgiving turkey Tuesday, a lucky bird selected in an online election. In 2018, when a turkey named “Peas” triumphed over “Carrots” for the pardon, Trump joked that Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount.

As he pardoned this year’s turkey, Trump made no similar jokes.

“What we’ve endured and been able to endure, with the (coronavirus) vaccines now coming out one after another – it’s an incredible thing that happened,” he said. “But it’s time to remember that we live in a great, great country – the greatest of them all.”

Multiple coronavirus vaccines appear to be on the horizon, but the U.S. economy is on shaky footing, and before those vaccines are expected to become widely available, millions of Americans could first fall off an economic cliff.

Some 12 million people are expected to lose unemployment benefits the day after Christmas, and moratoriums on evictions and student debt payments are set to expire at the end of the year.

Yet Congress has been unable to reach a compromise that would alleviate that economic hardship. Despite months of on-and-off negotiations, Republicans and Democrats haven’t agreed on the terms of another COVID-19 relief bill.

Then, last week, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told the Federal Reserve it must wind down a series of pandemic lending programs. Congress had given the Treasury Department $454 billion in the spring to backstop the Fed on emergency loans. Much of that money had remained untapped, and, in theory, could have been used by the Biden administration. But by ordering the Fed to return the money, the Trump administration is essentially tying the incoming administration’s hands.

The focus for immediate aid is back to legislative action. Last week, in his first economic speech since the election, President-elect Joe Biden urged lawmakers to step up.

“Right now, Congress should come together and pass a COVID relief package like the HEROES Act that the [Democratic-led] House passed six months ago,” Biden said.

The sticking point is that Democrats want over $2 trillion in economic assistance. Republicans insist the economy is doing significantly better than it was when Congress passed the CARES Act in March. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has called for $500 billion in new relief.

A question for Biden and his team is whether they should be encouraging Democrats to move quickly, to deliver aid faster, even if that means accepting a smaller deal. The dilemma is testing how he’s able to influence Congress before he’s sworn in to office.

On Friday, Biden met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to discuss an emergency aid package during the lame-duck session. A Biden spokesman rejected the idea that Biden is actively encouraging a smaller deal and says the president-elect “fully supports the speaker and leader in negotiations” with Republicans in Congress and in the White House.

But there’s an open debate in Democratic circles about priorities for relief.

Jared Bernstein — who was chief economist for Vice President Biden during the last recession and is now a transition adviser — told reporters in a Q&A with the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing that typically an incoming administration would wait until it’s officially in charge to put its fingerprints on policies.

“That’s certainly what we did in the Obama administration where we had the Recovery Act in the field a month after President Obama took office,” he said.

But Bernstein says the current environment is different.

“You hear the president-elect saying this is something that should happen now, and the reason is because the economy is at a very precarious moment,” he said.

Bernstein says there are three primary factors to consider in framing a new stimulus package — size, composition and speed. He singled one out.

“Composition is important, size is very important, but speed is so essential right now,” he said in the SABEW interview.

It’s a receptive argument for Jason Furman, who was a chair of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Obama administration.

“I think a meaningful something is a lot better than nothing, and holding out for more is a strategy to prolong suffering,” he said in an interview with NPR.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a debate within Biden world of, ‘$500 billion sort of sucks but we may not be able to do better, and this means like the economy will be better under us,’ ” Furman imagined. “‘And we don’t need to take ownership for it’ … versus other people who won’t want to look like they’re party to a cave even before he’s in office.”

It would be complicated for some Democrats to look like they’re giving in. But regardless, Harry Reid, who was Senate majority leader during the 2009 negotiations, says rarely does Congress pass much legislation around the holidays.

“I think it will be very difficult to get a meaningful relief bill done before Jan. 20,” Reid said, referring to Inauguration Day.

Reid believes the dynamic will shift in Biden’s favor once President Trump is no longer in office and McConnell will face more pressure from the public.

“I think it will put some wind under the wings of McConnell not to be the Grim Reaper,” he said.

Reid thinks if anyone could work with Republicans to pass more aid, it’d probably be Biden. Reid helped Biden push through the last major stimulus bill under a Democratic administration. But back then, in 2009, Democrats controlled the Senate, whereas now control of the chamber depends on two Georgia runoffs in early January. And by then, regardless of which party wins those races, the economy could be even shakier.

Mysterious shiny monolith found in otherworldly Utah desert – Los Angeles Times

Deep in the Mars-like landscape of Utah’s red-rock desert lies a mystery: a gleaming metal monolith found in one of the most remote parts of the state.

The smooth, tall structure was discovered during a helicopter survey of bighorn sheep in southeastern Utah, officials said Monday.

A crew from the Utah Department of Public Safety and Division of Wildlife Resources spotted the gleaming object from the air Nov. 18 and landed to check it out during a work break.

They found a three-sided stainless-steel object about as tall as two men put together. They discovered no clues as to who might have driven it into the ground among the undulating red rocks or why, but officials discounted extraterrestrial help.

“This thing is not from another world,” said Lt. Nick Street of the Utah Highway Patrol, part of the Department of Public Safety.

Still, it’s clear that it took some planning and work both to construct the 10-to-12-foot monolith and embed it in the rock.

The exact location is so remote that officials are not revealing it publicly, worried that people might get lost or stranded trying to find it and need to be rescued.

The monolith evokes the one that appears in the Stanley Kubrick movie “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Some speculate that it could be an art installation, though it’s illegal to place art objects without authorization on federal public land.

Bureau of Land Management officials are investigating how long it’s been there, who might have created it and whether to remove it.

This is not the first time that a mysterious monolith has appeared in the American West. In January 2001, a squat and shiny structure materialized on a windswept Seattle hilltop, then vanished as inexplicably as it appeared.

President Donald Trump is expected to travel to Pennsylvania on Wednesday to address a Republican-organized event promoting baseless allegations of voter fraud in the state, Axios and CNN reported.

A source told Axios the plans might still change, but the visit would be just Trump’s first trip outside the Washington, DC, area since losing this month’s election to Joe Biden.

Sources told Axios and CNN that Trump was expected to join his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani at a hotel in Gettysburg to meet with the state’s Republican-led Senate Majority Policy Committee to discuss alleged “election issues and irregularities.”

State Sen. Doug Mastriano requested the meeting take place amid the Trump campaign’s refusal to give up its court challenges against Pennsylvania’s election result. The battleground state officially certified its result Tuesday, with Biden defeating Trump by 80,555 votes and securing its 20 Electoral College votes.

The event is said to be the first of several planned in battleground states designed to undermine Biden’s victory in the election, CNN reported.

Jenna Ellis, an attorney working on the Trump campaign, said the outgoing president’s legal team would not “back down” despite state officials certifying Biden’s victory.

“It’s in everyone’s interest to have a full vetting of election irregularities and fraud,” Giuliani said in a statement reported by Bloomberg.

“And the only way to do this is with public hearings, complete with witnesses, videos, pictures and other evidence of illegalities from the November 3rd election.”

Trump and his campaign continue to insist, without evidence, that widespread voter fraud led to his defeat earlier this month, and Pennsylvania has been at the center of their baseless claims.

Speaking after Pennsylvania certified its election result, the Biden campaign advisor Bob Bauer said: “It’s readily apparent to everyone besides Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and Jenna Ellis that this election is over and that Joe Biden won resoundingly.”

He added: “Trump did everything he could to disenfranchise voters and stop the results from being certified in Pennsylvania, including filing over 15 unsuccessful lawsuits — most recently producing one of the more embarrassing courtroom performances of all time, with the judge in the case ruling that their arguments were ‘without merit’ and ‘unsupported by evidence.’

“Trump did not succeed in Pennsylvania and he will not succeed anywhere else.”

Trump’s legal strategy to overturn the election results took a blow this week after Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania certified their results.

“I want to thank Emily Murphy at GSA for her steadfast dedication and loyalty to our Country,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “She has been harassed, threatened, and abused – and I do not want to see this happen to her, her family, or employees of GSA. Our case STRONGLY continues, we will keep up the good fight, and I believe we will prevail!”

State officials were flying over southeastern Utah looking for sheep as part of a routine task. Instead they found something straight out of a sci-fi movie.

From a helicopter, officers from the Utah Department of Public Safety spotted a large metal monolith — a single block of metal — last week. It was sitting in Utah’s Red Rock Country in the southeast. Officials have no idea how or when it got there — or who might have placed it.

“That’s been about the strangest thing that I’ve come across out there in all my years of flying,” helicopter pilot Bret Hutchings told KSL TV.

Hutchings said the structure appeared to be 10 to 12 feet tall and looked like it was planted there — not dropped from the air. In any case, officials said it isn’t legal.

“It is illegal to install structures or art without authorization on federally managed public lands,” said the Utah Department of Public Safety in a statement, “no matter what planet you’re from.”

It also referenced the structure’s out-of-this-world appearance on social media.

“We came across this, in the middle of nowhere, buried deep in the rock. Inquiring minds want to know, what the heck is it? Anyone?” wrote the department in an Instagram post.

As for would-be visitors, officials decided not to disclose the exact location of the monolith. It’s in a remote area — and if people attempt to visit it, “there is a significant possibility they may become stranded and require rescue,” the department said in its statement.

Utah’s Bureau of Land Management is assessing whether further investigation is necessary.

Hutchings has his own theory.

In the classic sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey, a group of prehistoric ape-men was baffled by a large black monolith that appeared in an African desert.

“I’m assuming it’s some new-wave artist or something,” Hutchings said, according to KSL TV. “Somebody that was a big fan [of the film].”

That same day, Biden announced a number of cabinet picks, including the core of his national security team.

“Immediately, we’ve gotten outreach from the national security shop to just across the board,” Biden told NBC News’ Lester Holt.

“They’re already working out my ability to get presidential daily briefs, we’re already working out meeting with the COVID team in the White House and how to not only distribute but get from a vaccine being distributed to a person able to get vaccinated, so I think we’re going to not be so far behind the curve as we thought might be in the past,” the president-elect continued. “And I must say the outreach has been sincere — it has not been begrudging so far and I don’t expect it to be.”

Trump’s coronavirus vaccine chief Dr. Moncef Slaoui had not had contact with Biden’s transition team as of Sunday, as vaccine candidates near a prospective rollout.

After the GSA gave its approval, President Trump thanked Murphy for her handling of the ascertainment process, while pledging to continue his legal challenge of the election results.

Trump’s legal strategy to overturn the election results took a blow this week after Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania certified their results.

“I want to thank Emily Murphy at GSA for her steadfast dedication and loyalty to our Country,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “She has been harassed, threatened, and abused – and I do not want to see this happen to her, her family, or employees of GSA. Our case STRONGLY continues, we will keep up the good fight, and I believe we will prevail!”

A transition official told Fox News that the Biden transition team has now made contact with every federal agency, as his transition is now formally underway.

Biden also pushed back on assertions that his administration would be like a “third Obama term,” after he announced a slew of Obama-era officials to his cabinet.

“This is not a third Obama term because … we face a totally different world than we faced in the Obama/Biden administration,” he said. “President Trump has changed the landscape. It’s become America first, it’s been America alone.”

Trump campaign announces Arizona public hearing on election, but lawmakers say none is planned – The Arizona Republic

President Donald Trump’s campaign announced Tuesday that the Arizona Legislature would hold a public hearing on Nov. 30 about the election, but legislative leaders said they had not authorized any such meeting.

The campaign touted the hearing as one of three in battleground states where it is disputing Trump’s defeat.

It was reportedly scheduled for the same day officials are set to certify Arizona’s election results. But the campaign did not offer any details, such as the time of the hearing or the name of the legislative committee that will convene.

“News to me,” Senate President Karen Fann, R-Prescott, replied when asked about plans for a hearing.

The Legislature’s calendar for Monday is currently blank, and a spokesman for Fann’s office confirmed she had not authorized any such meeting.

Over in the House of Representatives, a spokesman for Speaker Rusty Bowers, R-Mesa, said he had not authorized a hearing, either.

Still, the Trump campaign seemed certain there would be a hearing.

“We are pleased that the state Legislatures in Pennsylvania, Arizona and Michigan will be convening hearings to examine the November 3rd presidential election,” campaign senior legal advisor Jenna Ellis said in a statement, claiming to have proof of fraud in unspecified states but not offering any proof.

While legislators might wish to question Secretary of State’s Office staff members if they had concerns about the election, a spokesperson for the office said Tuesday she was not aware of any hearing.

The campaign’s statement also didn’t seem to ring any bells in the governor’s office. A spokesperson for Gov. Doug Ducey said he was unaware of a hearing.

Ducey said earlier in the day that Democratic nominee and President-elect Joe Biden had won Arizona – his first time acknowledging Trump’s defeat here – and said he had trust in the state’s election system.

The governor said less than a week ago he would accept the results only after all election-related lawsuits were resolved.

Courts have since tossed out the last of four election-related legal challenges in the state.

And the entirely Republican board of supervisors in Mohave County voted unanimously to certify its election results Monday, making it the last county in Arizona to do so, clearing the way for Secretary of State Katie Hobbs to finalize results Nov. 30.
