Massive storms and at least one “confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado” tore through the Chicago area late Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service, leaving a path of damage and destruction in its wake.

Here are the latest updates from across the region:

10:49 a.m.: NWS Sends 2 Survey Teams to Investigate Tornado Damage

The National Weather Service says it has dispatched two survey teams to investigate tornado damage in Chicago’s western suburbs.

The first team was sent to the Naperville, Woodridge, Darien and Burr Ridge area, the NWS tweeted. A second team was sent to search for tornadic evidence farther north in DuPage County, specifically in Downers Grove and near Addison.

“We are still doing some follow-up work with various emergency management agencies to see if additional damage surveys will need to be done elsewhere. We hope to have some preliminary findings posted at some point this afternoon,” the NWS said.

6:51 a.m.: NWS Says Tornado Touched Down in Naperville, Woodridge, Darien

A National Weather Service spokesman said the agency is still surveying the Chicago area following massive storms and a tornado late Sunday night, but confirmed that a tornado did touch down in multiple Chicago suburbs as it moved from west to east.

Matt Friedlien with the NWS said early Monday that the agency can confirm a tornado touched down in the Naperville, Woodridge and Darien area and moved from west to east. The tornado paralleled 75th Street into Woodridge and crossed 355, he said.

He noted that the NWS is not sure the exact locations where the tornado touched down, noting it was unclear if the tornado moved past Darien, but expected to have that information around mid-day.

6 a.m.: 6 Injured, 16 Homes Uninhabitable in Widespread Damage From Naperville Tornado

Naperville officials say six people were hospitalized and 16 houses were deemed uninhabitable, with at least 125 more reports of property damage in the area after a tornado tore through the Chicago suburb Sunday.

Naperville officials said Monday morning that tornado sirens were activated at 11:07 p.m. Sunday night and the tornado was reported to have touched down at around 11:10 p.m. in the area just south of 75th Street and Ranchview Drive.

Fire and police personnel were dispatched to that area at 11:28 p.m., according to the city, and five people were taken to Edward Hospital: one in critical condition, while the other four sustained what were believe to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The city deemed 16 houses uninhabitable as of 6 a.m., with inspectors continuing to survey property damage Monday morning, noting widespread damage to homes, downed power lines and fallen trees across the area.

The city has received at least 125 reports of property damage with the area where the tornado touched down, with 10 people from three homes taken to a relocation point where the Red Cross and Salvation Army were assisting those displaced.

More details here.

6:23 a.m.: NWS Details Overnight Tornado Damage

The NWS says “At least one damaging tornado occurred in the southwest Chicago metro & will be surveyed today,” noting that the most significant damage was in the southwest suburbs of Naperville, Woodridge and Darien between 11 p.m. and 12 a.m.

“Significant damage to over a dozen southwest suburban homes and at least some damage to over 100 homes” was reported, the NWS said.

2:55 a.m.: Woodridge Conducting Damage Assessment From Tornado

Woodridge officials said the village is conducting a damage assessment from the tornado, with no reports of significant injuries as of 2:55 a.m.

A tornado touched down at around 11:30 p.m. in Woodridge east of Route 53 between 83rd Street and 75th Street, the village said, traveling east to the Lemont Road area.

DuPage Public Safety Communications activated the tornado sirens at 10:48 p.m. in Woodridge and the surrounding communities, according to the village.

Residents were advised to avoid the areas noted due to downed power lines and fallen trees. Emergency response crews remain on the scene.

2 a.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Expires

A severe thunderstorm watch in Will and Kankakee counties in Illinois, along with Lake, Porter, Jasper and Newton counties in northwest Indiana, was allowed to expire at 2 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The thunderstorms that sparked a slew of watches and warnings late Sunday and into early Monday have moved out of the NBC 5 viewing area.

1:42 a.m.: Clean-Up Begins After Powerful Storms Hammer Area

All severe weather warnings were allowed to expire throughout the Chicago area, but a long night of clean-up and damage assessment was just beginning in the city and suburbs.

Road closures were still prevalent in several areas, including in Woodridge, where a tornado likely touched down on Sunday night. Darien, Naperville and Burr Ridge are also reporting street closures due to storm damage, fires and other challenges in the early morning hours of Monday.

Heavy rainfall was reported throughout the area, with areas just west of Chicago and areas of northwest Indiana hit particularly hard.

1:03 a.m.: No Injuries Reported in Darien

A likely tornado that struck Chicago’s western suburbs did serious damage in Darien, but no injuries have been reported thus far, according to officials.

Downed power lines remain a hazard in the community:

1:02 a.m.: Road Closures Reported in Woodridge, Other Chicago Suburbs Due to Storm Damage

Roadways in several Chicago area communities have been rendered impassable by damage left behind by a string of severe thunderstorms, including one that likely spawned a tornado in the western suburbs Sunday night.

According to Total Traffic, several major streets are closed in suburban Woodridge after a tornado likely touched down around 11 p.m. Sunday.

According to Woodridge police, residents are being asked to avoid areas near Janes Avenue, Woodridge Drive and Woodward Avenue because of heavy storm damage and first responder activity.

In Naperville, the probable tornado caused a structure collapse in the area of Ranchview Drive and Princeton Circle, and residents are being asked to avoid the area.

The Stevenson Expressway between Kedzie and Pulaski Road is dealing with major flooding issues, which are causing stop-and-go traffic on the roadway.

Flooding has also caused the three left lanes of the outbound Kennedy near the Hubbard Street Tunnel to become impassable. Only the right lane is currently usable.

In suburban Darien, Lemont Road is closed in both directions between 83rd Street and 75th Street due to storm damage and a reported fire.

12:39 a.m.: Reports of Tornado Damage Continue to Come In From Woodridge

Officials in Woodridge have confirmed that a tornado touched down in the community late Sunday night:

Several structures were badly damaged in the tornado, and residents are being urged to avoid the areas of Janes Avenue, Woodridge Drive and Woodward Avenue.

11:19 p.m.: “Confirmed Large and Extremely Dangerous Tornado” Impacting Chicago Area

Calling it a “life-threatening situation,” the National Weather Service urged residents to seek shelter as a “confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado” caused damage in the western and southwestern suburbs of Chicago.

According to the NWS, the tornado was located over Darien at 11:15 p.m., and was moving east at 45 miles per hour.

11:16 p.m.: Tornado Warning Issued for Parts of DuPage, Cook Counties

A new tornado warning was issued for parts of DuPage and Cook counties, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning impacted east-central DuPage County and central Cook County, and was in effect until midnight.

Newly released footage shows the two men sought in connection to the broad-daylight stabbing that seriously wounded a volunteer for Eric Adams’ mayoral campaign over the weekend.

The suspected attacker — shown in surveillance video released by cops Monday wearing a red bandanna — knifed the 42-year-old victim several times on Morris Avenue near East 151st Street around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

He continued to stab him even while he was on the ground, sources said.

An ice pick and a knife were later found at the scene.

The suspect in the stabbing was seen wearing a red bandanna.

Following the brutal attack, the suspect fled on foot southbound on Morris Avenue, accompanied by another man.

The victim, who was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center, was out of surgery for a punctured lung Sunday night and is in stable condition, sources said.

Speaking on CNN’s “New Day” Monday morning, the Democratic front-runner said the volunteer is “doing fine” and is “out of surgery.”

Candidate Eric Adams answered, “We don’t know,” when asked if the stabbing was related to the victim’s work on his campaign.
James Keivom

“We visited him, and I spoke with him at the hospital, and the video was just horrific,” Adams said. “Someone came up behind him and repeatedly stabbed him.”

When asked whether the attack was related to the victim’s work on the campaign, the former police officer said, “We don’t know, and hopefully not.”

“The police department’s conducting a thorough investigation,” Adams said. “The video was there, and that’s why it’s so important to use technology to add another layer on public protection in the city.”

In addition to the bandanna, the stabbing suspect wore a white tank top, camouflage shorts, red sneakers and a black and gray backpack, cops said.

His alleged accomplice was last seen wearing a gray sweater with the word “Privileged” on the front, beige pants and red and white sneakers.

The victim has nearly 50 prior arrests, sources said.

The TAKE with Rick Klein

It’s a showdown more than half a year – perhaps even decades – in the making.

This week, Senate Democrats will try to pass a voting-rights overhaul that President Joe Biden has identified as critical to his agenda. The outcome is virtually preordained, with only 49 Democrats and not a single Republican expected to support the “For the People Act,” a version of which has already passed the House.

But whether the expected failure of this bill marks the end of something or the beginning of something else depends on how things play out. Biden and Senate Democratic leaders are challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on terrain he’s familiar with, and with much of Biden’s domestic agenda in the balance.

Sen. Joe Manchin’s proposed changes to the bill united Democrats for a brief moment – though maybe too well. McConnell is now touting the fact that Stacey Abrams and other prominent progressives are in league with Manchin to boast that all Republicans will oppose the efforts to change voting-rights laws at the federal level.

With 14 states and counting having passed more restrictive voting laws, this is no academic matter. The consequences are vast for voting as well as for the balance of Biden’s extensive agenda, with everything from infrastructure and immigration reform to policing and tax policy depending on some level of bipartisan buy-in.

Biden and McConnell know each other well, and some Democrats are hoping their colleagues – including Manchin – get to know the McConnell they’ve long known in the ensuing days.

Biden’s theory of governance is based on the kind of bipartisan cooperation McConnell has made a career trying to thwart when there’s been a Democrat in the White House. They both can’t be right about how Washington works.

The RUNDOWN with Averi Harper

The past weekend saw countless celebrations of freedom in observance of Juneteenth — momentum in support of the newest national holiday bolstered by the so-called reckoning on race since the murder of George Floyd.

It comes as prominent GOP voices have positioned themselves squarely in opposition to this attempted progression in the national consciousness.

Former Vice President Mike Pence told the audience at the Faith & Freedom Coalition Conference that “critical race theory is racism” and “Black lives are not endangered by police.”

Sen. Ted Cruz told the conference-goers that “critical race theory is bigoted” and “every bit as racist as the Klansmen in white sheet” — making a deeply offensive comparison between the white supremacist hate group that has a dark history of intimidation, terror and violence toward African Americans and an academic concept that aims to illuminate the impact of institutional racism.

The fact is comments like that of Cruz and Pence are well received in many GOP circles, as evidenced by the applause at the weekend conference in Orlando, Florida.

As the Republican Party determines a post-Trump era direction in a nation that is only growing more diverse, it’s talking points like the aforementioned comments that could stand in the way of any earnest outreach in communities of color.

With a high-stakes 2022 Senate contest on the horizon, Georgians could be seeing a Trump-supported, famous face join the race against Sen. Raphael Warnock.

In a recent video posted to Twitter, retired NFL running back and famed University of Georgia Bulldog, Herschel Walker, appeared to hint at a possible political future. In the video, Walker revs the engine of his sports car before posing next to its Georgia license plate and saying, “I’m getting ready and we can run with the big dogs.”

Walker’s alliance with Trump goes back decades — when Trump became the owner of the New Jersey Generals in the early 1980s, he signed Walker to a lucrative contract. Now it remains to be seen whether Trump can offer Walker a springboard into politics by rallying his base behind him in what will be one of the toughest and most closely watched races of the 2022 cycle.

A worrying spike of coronavirus infections in Europe is being driven by the delta variant, according to global health leaders, even as immunization rates in some countries are on the way up.

Increased cases reported in the U.K. and Portugal have forced officials to reimplement lockdown restrictions or hold off on lifting pandemic mandates. Officials in France, Germany and Spain said they are closely monitoring clusters of infection tied to the delta variant.

The strain, also known as B.1.617.2, was first detected in India. It is now “well on its way to becoming the dominant variant globally because of its increased transmissibility,” Soumya Swaminathan, the World Health Organization’s chief scientist, said Friday.

Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines have been shown to be effective against this strain.

A recent study from Public Health England showed two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine were 88% effective against symptomatic disease from the delta variant compared with 93% effectiveness against the alpha variant, the variant first detected in the United Kingdom. The vaccine only provided 33% protection after just one dose.

Still, in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions shared similar concerns of the spread of the delta strain. The CDC declared last week that it was a “variant of concern,” meaning it poses a significant threat to unvaccinated people.

A delay in lifting lockdown restrictions

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced last week a delay in plans to lift the final elements of the nation’s lockdown restrictions, citing “a faster than predicted” spread of the strain.

Originally set to end Monday, Johnson said restrictions on businesses and large events will remain in place until July 19.

In the U.K., data shows 99% of sequenced and genotyped confirmed coronavirus cases across the country are the delta variant, according to Public Health England.

The government’s weekly data as of June 18 showed numbers of the delta variant in the U.K. have risen by 33,630 from the previous week to a total of 75,953.

This comes despite the nation’s high immunization rate, with 59.5% of the population fully vaccinated from the coronavirus. A reported 81.6% of the population have received one dose, according to government data.

Dr. Jenny Harries, chief executive of U.K. Health Security Agency, said in a statement, “The increase is primarily in younger age groups, a large proportion of which were unvaccinated but are now being invited to receive the vaccine.”

On Friday, the government announced every adult over the age of 18 is eligible to receive a coronavirus vaccine.

Authorities in Portugal banned all weekend travel in and out of Lisbon, the capital, to cut down on any further spread of the virus to other parts of the country.

Portugal’s National Health Institute reported this weekend the delta variant is shown to be in at least 60% of new cases in Lisbon. The country reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases for the fourth day in a row on Saturday, according to Reuters.

Spain, Germany and France watch with concern

Cases tied to the delta strain are reported as being low in France, Spain and Germany, but each nation’s health minister warn that the delta variant is perceived as a real threat.

As of June 14, Spain reported the delta variant accounted for less than 1% of cases.

Spain’s Catalonia region, in the northeast, reported 20% of new cases were linked to the delta strain, the region’s health official, Josep Maria Argimon, announced at a press conference Thursday.

Argimon warned that delta could be the predominant variant throughout the country in two to four weeks.

That hasn’t stopped the nation from moving forward with lifting some COVID-19 restrictions. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced Friday that masks would no longer have to be worn outdoors in the country, starting June 26.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn said it’s not if the delta variant becomes dominant, but “when and under what conditions.”

France reported that 2% to 4% of virus samples being analyzed in the country showed the delta variant, according to French Health Minister Olivier Véran.

“We are in the process of crushing the virus and crushing the pandemic, and we must in no way let the Delta variant get the upper hand,” Véran said last week, according to The Financial Times.

“You might say this is still low but it is similar to the situation in the UK a few weeks ago,” he said.

As Claudette swept across the Southeast over the weekend, it brought torrents of rain, flooding and tornadoes that destroyed dozens of homes. On Saturday evening in Tuscaloosa County, northwest of Montgomery, a 24-year-old father and his 3-year-old son were killed when a tree fell on their home, the Tuscaloosa News reported. And a 23-year-old in DeKalb County, in the state’s northeast, drowned after her car ran off a road during flooding, AL.com reported.

Tropical Storm Claudette was downgraded to a tropical depression after battering the Southeast over the weekend. Heavy rains, high winds and flash flooding contributed to the deaths of 13 people in Alabama Saturday, and while the storm has weakened, it is expected to regain strength as it makes its way toward the East Coast.

For the time being, wind speeds remain relatively low, peaking around 30 mph. But Claudette is expected to intensify, regaining strength and reaching tropical storm status late Sunday or early Monday morning. Tropical storm conditions are expected along parts of the North Carolina coast and a tropical storm watch is in effect in northeastern South Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center is advising residents in southern Georgia, northern Florida and the Carolinas to prepare for torrential rain and flooding —and possibly tornadoes — through Monday morning. The storm is expected to bring as much as 6 inches of rain to parts of the Southeast. Rising water levels present a larger threat. Storm surge levels could reach as high as 3 feet as winds force the water away from the storm.

“As the large circulation of Claudette moves off of the southeastern United States coast later today and tonight, winds will increase along and offshore of the coast, and the system is expected to regain tropical-storm status by Monday morning,” the NHC said. “Additional re-strengthening is forecast on Monday and Monday night while the cyclone moves over the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream.”

Claudette originated in the Gulf of Mexico last week before making landfall Saturday. Some areas experienced over a foot of rain as the storm pummeled the region Saturday.

The Associated Press reported that a 15-vehicle crash just south of Montgomery, Ala., on Saturday left 10 people dead, including nine children. In a separate incident, a 24-year-old man and a 3-year-old boy were killed outside of Tuscaloosa when a tree fell on their house. A 23-year-old woman from Fort Payne also died on Saturday after her car went off the road into a rain-swollen creek, a DeKalb County deputy coroner told WHNT-TV.

The NHC is projecting the storm will become a post-tropical cyclone by late Tuesday as it makes its way out to sea. Claudette is the third named storm of the year for the Atlantic hurricane season, which traditionally runs from June 1 through the end of November. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting an above-average hurricane season for 2021, with 13-20 possible named storms.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett warned the U.S. and other nations seeking to rekindle the nuclear agreement with Iran to “wake up” following the election of a hardline judge as the country’s president.

Speaking at a televised cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Bennett said Ebrahim Raisi, a protege of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would establish a “regime of brutal hangmen,” Reuters reported.

NETANYAHU GOES ‘SCORCHED EARTH’ DURING EXIT

“Raisi’s election is, I would say, the last chance for world powers to wake up before returning to the nuclear agreement, and understand who they are doing business with,” said Bennett, who replaced Benjamin Netanyahu last week after the former prime minister failed to form a new government.

“A regime of brutal hangmen must never be allowed to have weapons of mass-destruction,” Bennett said. “Israel’s position will not change on this.”

Raisi, Iran’s chief jurist who is under U.S. sanctions for human rights violations, pulled in 62 percent of the vote in Saturday’s election that was marked by extremely low turnout — less than half the country’s eligible voters cast a ballot.

Bennett has carried on with Netanyahu’s view that the U.S. should not rejoin the nuclear agreement that former President Donald Trump withdrew from in 2018.

The Biden administration has said it wanted to restart negotiations with Iran about returning to the deal the Obama administration brokered with world powers in 2015.

HONG KONG, June 21 (Reuters) – Hong Kong pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily will be forced to shut “in a matter of days” after authorities froze the company’s assets under a sweeping national security law, an adviser to jailed tycoon Jimmy Lai told Reuters on Monday.

Mark Simon, speaking by phone from the United States, said Next Digital (0282.HK), publisher of the popular Hong Kong newspaper, will hold a board meeting on Monday to discuss how to move forward.

“We thought we’d be able to make it to the end of the month,” Simon said. “It’s just getting harder and harder. It’s essentially a matter of days.”

His comments signal the closure is imminent even after Apple Daily said on Sunday the freezing of its assets had left the newspaper with cash for “a few weeks” for normal operations.”

The news comes two days after chief editor Ryan Law, 47, and chief executive Cheung Kim-hung, 59, were denied bail after being charged with collusion with a foreign country.

Three other executives were also arrested last Thursday when 500 police officers raided the newspaper’s offices in a case that has drawn condemnation from Western nations, global rights groups and the chief U.N. spokesperson for human rights.

The three have been released on bail.

Simon told Reuters it had become impossible to conduct banking operations.

“Vendors tried to put money into our accounts and were rejected. We can’t bank. Some vendors tried to do that as a favour. We just wanted to find out and it was rejected,” he said.

The newspaper has come under increasing pressure since owner and staunch Beijing critic Jimmy Lai, who is now in jail, was arrested under the national security law last August and has since had some of his assets frozen.

Three companies related to Apple Daily are also being prosecuted for collusion with a foreign country and authorities have frozen HK$18 million ($2.3 million) of their assets.

WILTON MANORS, Fla. – One person is dead and another hospitalized after a man driving a truck struck them on Saturday at the Stonewall Pride Parade in Wilton Manors.

Newly obtained surveillance video shows a white pickup truck crashing into a fence and mowing down the plants at the Fort Lauderdale Garden Center on Northeast 4th Avenue near 16th Street.

Seconds earlier, off-camera, the same pickup truck plowed into a crowd of people at the LGBTQ parade in Wilton Manors.

“It was bad,” said Keith Witusik, a Mechanic at Fort Lauderdale Garden Center. “I was like, oh my God. I can’t believe this is happening.”

First responders within the crowd quickly aided the two men who were hit, performing CPR.

“Both males were transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where one was later pronounced deceased,” said Det. Ali Adamson with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. “The other male remains in Broward Health Medical Center and is expected to survive.”

Authorities have not named either of the victims yet.

Police took the driver of the white truck into custody.

The FBI is joining the investigation as detectives work to figure out whether the crash was a hate crime or just a horrible accident.

“Privately in the room, President Biden communicated to President Putin that there would be costs and consequences if harmful activities against the United States continued,” Sullivan told host Chris Wallace. “Publicly, in his press conference, he not only spoke out about that quite directly, mincing no words, but he also spoke about American values — something the last president never talked about.”

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The wife and 4-year-old stepdaughter of an off-duty Harris County deputy constable were wounded early Sunday in a home invasion at their Montrose apartment.

It happened some time after 2 a.m. in the 2200 block of West Dallas near Montrose Boulevard.

The deputy and his family were asleep in their apartment when someone broke in, according to Houston police. The off-duty deputy woke up and confronted the suspect and they exchanged gunfire before he fled the apartment.

The 4-year-old was shot in the arm, and her mother was shot in the leg, according to Houston police chief Troy Finner.

The deputy constable told investigators that he believes he hit the suspect during the shootout, and a blood trail leading away from the apartment was discovered, according to Houston police chief Troy Finner.

The 4-year-old was in surgery at a hospital Sunday morning and was stable.
Authorities fanned out in the area as they looked for the man responsible, but he was still on the loose.

“If anyone hears about a suspect going to the hospital, please notify HPD homicide,” Finner said.

Authorities did not have a detailed description of the man they were looking for, except that he was dressed in black and may have been around 5 feet 5 inches tall. He was armed with a shotgun and some type of assault rifle, police said.

The deputy constable works for Harris County Precinct 1 and has been with the agency for around three years.

Investigators weren’t yet sure if the deputy constable was targeted or if the intrusion was a random act.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Anti-government protesters took to the streets in more than a score of cities across Brazil on Saturday as the nation’s confirmed death toll from COVID-19 soared past half a million — a tragedy many critics blame on President Jair Bolsonaro’s attempt to minimize the disease.

Thousands gathered in downtown Rio de Janeiro waving flags with slogans such as “Get out Bolsonaro. Government of hunger and unemployment.”

“Brazil is experiencing a great setback. The country was an exemplary country for vaccination in the world. We have widely recognized institutions, but today we are in a sad situation ”, said Isabela Gouljor, a 20-year-old student who joined the protest in Rio.

Other marchers hoisted posters reading: “500 thousand deaths. It’s his fault,” alluding to Bolsonaro.

Similar marches took place in at least 22 or Brazil’s 26 states, as well as in the Federal District, Brasilia. They were promoted by left-wing opposition parties who have been heartened by Bolsonaro’s declining poll ratings with next year’s presidential race looming.

“Get out Bolsonaro, genocidal,” yelled Rio demonstrators, some of them wearing t-shirts or masks with the image of former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva — who leads Bolsonaro in some polls.

In São Paulo, protesters dropped red balloons as a tribute to the victims of the virus

Bolsonaro’s supporters have taken more often to the streets over the past month, in large part because many agree with his dismissal of restrictions meant to stifle the coronavirus and anger that lockdown measures have hurt businesses.

Critics say such messages, as well as Bolsonaro’s promotion of disproven treatments such as hydroxychloroquine, have contributed to the soaring death toll and a sluggish vaccine campaign that has fully inoculated less than 12% of the population. The country of some 213 million people is registering nearly 100,000 new infections and 2,000 deaths a day.

Demonstrators protest against Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of the coronavirus.

“For the leftists, putting their followers in the streets is a way of wearing Bolsonaro down for the election,” said Leandro Consentino, a political science professor at Insper, a university in Sao Paulo. “But at the same, time they are contradicting themselves and losing the discourse of maintaining health care, because they are causing the same agglomerations as Bolsonaro.”

Saturday’s marches came a week after Bolsonaro led a massive motorcycle parade of supporters in Sao Paulo, though his allies and foes differ dramatically on the size of that event.

“Bolsonaro needs to show that he maintains significant support to give a message of strength to those who are investigating the actions of his government in Congress”, Consentino said.

WILTON MANORS, Fla. — A driver slammed into spectators Saturday evening at the start of a Pride parade in South Florida, killing one man and seriously injuring another, authorities said.

Some witnesses said the crash appeared to be an intentional act, but Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Ali Adamson told reporters that authorities were investigating all possibilities.

The collision happened during the Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Parade. Wilton Manors is just north of Fort Lauderdale.

The driver and the victims were a part of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus family, according to a statement reported by news outlets from the group’s president, Justin Knight.

“To my knowledge it was an accident. This was not an attack on the LGBTQ community,” Knight said in the statement. “We anticipate more details to follow and ask for the community’s love and support.”

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said a driver of a pickup truck suddenly accelerated when he was told he was next in the parade, crashing into the victims, according to WSVN-TV. In the immediate aftermath of the crash, Trantalis said he believed the crash was “deliberate.”

Police said the driver was taken into custody, but it was unclear whether he had been charged.

Photos and video from the scene showed Democratic U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in tears while in a convertible at the parade.

In a statement Saturday night, Wasserman Schultz said she was safe but “deeply shaken and devastated that a life was lost.”

“I am so heartbroken by what took place at this celebration,” she said. “May the memory of the life lost be for a blessing.”

Spectator Christina Currie told the South Florida SunSentinel that she was with her family at the start of the parade.

“All of a sudden there was a loud revving of a truck and a crash through a fence,” Currie said. “It was definitely an intentional act right across the lanes of traffic.”

Wilton Manors police tweeted Saturday night that the public is not in danger.

“Though authorities are still gathering information, we know two individuals marching to celebrate inclusion and equality were struck by a vehicle,” Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a statement. “This tragedy took place within feet of me and my (Broward Sheriff’s Office) team, and we are devastated having witnessed this horrific incident.”

TAIPEI, June 20 (Reuters) – Taiwanese staff working at the island’s representative office in Hong Kong will begin leaving the Chinese-run city from Sunday, a senior official said, after the government there demanded its officials sign a document supporting Beijing’s claim to Taiwan.

Chinese-ruled Hong Kong has become another bone of contention between Taipei and Beijing, especially after Taiwan lambasted a security law imposed on Hong Kong by Beijing and began welcoming Hong Kongers to settle on the island.

Lin Fei-fan, deputy secretary general of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, said only local staff would remain at the office.

“This is because the Chinese Communist Party and the Hong Kong government continue to force our personnel stationed in Hong Kong to sign a ‘one China commitment letter’ to recognise ‘one China’,” he said on his Facebook page.

“As a political prerequisite for the visa renewal, we will of course not accept it!”

China sees democratically-ruled Taiwan as part of “one China” and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control.

Lin said Taiwan would never accept “one China” or “one country, two systems”, Beijing’s way of running Hong Kong under Chinese sovereignty it hopes to one day apply to the island.

A senior Taiwan official familiar with the matter told Reuters seven Taiwan officials will return on Sunday afternoon, with the last remaining official to come back after visa expiry next month.

“It is not acceptable for us to be politically diminished,” the official said, pointing to the request to sign the document.

In a statement earlier on Sunday, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said that since July 2018 the Hong Kong government has “repeatedly set unreasonable political conditions for staff visas for our Hong Kong office, demanding the signing of a ‘One China Commitment Letter'”.

Starting from Monday, the Hong Kong office will “adjust its business handling method,” it added, saying the office will maintain “necessary operations”.

Taiwanese staff will not sign any such “one China” letter, it added.

Last month, Hong Kong suspended operations at its Taiwan representative office, blaming Taipei’s “gross” interference in internal affairs, including with its offer to assist “violent” protesters, accusations Taiwan rejected.

Macau’s government followed suit on Wednesday.

When does a joke become a dad joke? That’s easy. When it becomes apparent.

    Wait, don’t click away.

Are dad jokes tired? Probably. They’ve been walking all day to get here to this very post. But now that I’ve got your (perhaps somewhat annoyed) attention, consider this your reminder that it’s Father’s Day — or depending on the day you’re reading this, Oops, you missed Father’s Day.

It’s a day to honor dads everywhere, whether they be young or old, single or partnered, new to the job or seasoned like a favorite cast iron skillet. They could be a stay-at-home dad or the primary breadwinner. They could be your own dad, your kid’s dad, a dad who has passed away or anyone in your life who plays that role for you.

It’s a day to do, well, whatever feels right to you and your family. But before you go celebrate, here are a few fun numbers that describe the holiday. Take them with you to the barbecue, brunch or whatever it is your version of dad does best.

    1910

Father’s Day, it seems, has a mother. The idea for a day honoring dads is generally attributed to Sonora Dodd, a woman raised by her father after her mother died in childbirth, according to the Library of Congress. In 1910, Dodd was apparently listening to a church service on Mother’s Day, which itself had only existed for a few years and was still unofficial, and she began to think about everything her father had done for her growing up. The first Father’s Day celebration took place where Dodd lived, in Spokane, Wash., in June.

    1966

But it took a few more decades to really become official. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed that the third Sunday in June would be officially known as Father’s Day, saying that we look to fathers to “provide the strength and stability which characterize the successful family.” In 1972, President Nixon made the day a national holiday.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson, a father of two daughters, proclaimed that the third Sunday in June would be known as Father’s Day.

    75 million

There are 121 million men over the age of 15 in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Among them, 75 million are fathers to biological, step or adopted children. That’s about six in 10 men. Most of them, around 61%, became dads in their 20s. Another 20% became dads between the ages of 30 and 34.

    72 million

Father’s Day is the fourth largest holiday for sending cards in the U.S., behind Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Christmas, according to Hallmark. According to the greeting card company, 72 million Father’s Day cards are purchased each year. About a quarter of them are considered “humor” cards, which is a nice segue into another dad joke: Two guys walked into a bar. The third guy ducked. You’re welcome.

    75 percent

This is the amount of Americans recently surveyed by the National Retail Federation who said they plan to celebrate the father figures in their life this weekend. About half of the survey’s respondents said they were planning on buying a gift for their own dad — and those gifts are getting more expensive. On average, people surveyed said they’re planning on spending $174 on Father’s Day gifts, nearly double what people were spending more than 10 years ago.

Fifty-nine percent of Americans surveyed by the National Retail Federation were planning to buy cards for Father’s Day. The survey also shows that 49 percent plan on giving clothing and 45 percent will give gift cards.

    7 percent

The percent of fathers who are stay-at-home dads is slowly rising. In 1989, about 4% of fathers were at home. By 2016, that number had risen to 7%, according to the Pew Research Center. In that same time frame, the share of mothers at home has remained relatively stable, at around 27%. In general, dads are more involved in childcare now than they were 50 years ago. In 1965, fathers reported that they spent about 2.5 hours per week caring for children. In 2016, that number had jumped to eight hours.

    1.7 million

Of the 35 million fathers with children under 18, 1.7 million of them are single dads, in that they are living with a child with no spouse or partner present, according to the Census. In total, 46% of dads have children under 18, the rest have adult children, and about one in four are grandfathers.

    1

Because you’ve read this far, this is how many dads it usually takes to screw in a lightbulb. You didn’t think I’d put a question in the headline and not answer it, did you?

    63 percent

In a survey by the Pew Research Center, most dads said being a parent is rewarding and central to their identity. But 63 percent said they spent “too little” time with their children. So, if you have a dad in your life who’s still around, make sure to call him soon.

Or, as my own dad would say, don’t call him soon, call him dad.
