DALLAS – Former Presidentv Donald Trump easily won the 2024 GOP presidential nomination poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) gathering this weekend in Texas.

Trump, who’s repeatedly flirted with making another presidential run in 2024 to try and return to the White House, captured 70% of ballots cast in the anonymous straw poll, according to results announced by CPAC on Sunday afternoon.

That’s a boost from the 55% support he won in the hypothetical 2024 Republican primary matchup straw poll at CPAC Orlando in late February.

“I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your incredible support,” Trump said as he gave the Dallas event’s keynote address minutes later.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in a distant second, at 21%. No one else among the 19 potential 2024 Republican White House contenders topped 1%.

TRUMP SPEECH, STRAW POLL RESULTS, PUT 2024 GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION IN CPAC SPOTLIGHT

The results of the 2024 GOP presidential nomination straw poll at CPAC Dallas, which were announced on July 11, 2021 in Dallas, Texas.

DeSantis, a first-term governor and Trump ally who soared in popularity among conservatives nationwide for his resistance to lockdowns and COVID restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic, easily topped a second 2024 ballot question – without Trump on the hypothetical ballot.

DeSantis grabbed 68% support on that question, with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at 5%. Donald Trump Jr. and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas were both at 4%, with South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem at 3%. No one else topped 2%.

The straw poll results, along with the former president’s headliner speech on Sunday, were the most anticipated moments at the three-day gathering of conservative activists and leaders from across the country.

Trump’s strong performance comes as no surprise. CPAC, long the largest and most influential gathering of conservatives, has become a Trump-fest since his 2016 presidential election victory.

Eighty-eight percent of 1,525 CPAC attendees casting ballots said they strongly approved of the job Trump did in the White House, with another 10% somewhat approving.

CPAC attendees anonymously answered – via an online app – the 20-question survey designed by organizers. Among the topics on the secret ballot, which organizers say will give them a sense of the pulse of the conservative movement, are critical race theory, cancel culture and border security. But the 2024 straw poll questions, without a doubt, generated the most interest.

At the straw poll at CPAC in Orlando, DeSantis, who finished in second place with 21% support, was the only other Republican to reach double digits.

DeSantis topped the second straw poll question in Orlando, which didn’t include Trump, finishing with 43% support in the hypothetical nomination showdown, with Noem second at 11%.

It remains unclear who organized the attack on the Haitian president, Jovenel Moïse. The detained suspects include two U.S. citizens of Haitian descent, identified as Florida residents James Solages, 35, and Joseph Vincent, 55, according to Mathias Pierre, Haiti’s minister of elections and interparty relations. An official who interrogated the pair said Solages claimed he was hired as an interpreter for “foreigners” after applying for the job online. The men and some of their family members claim that they didn’t know the president was going to be assassinated.

The Sugar Fire, the only active fire in the Beckwourth Complex, ran to the east and northeast Saturday, crossing US Highway 395 in at least two places destroying structures in Doyle, California.

Videos shot by Craig Philpott showed multiple structures burning in the small town.

The fire spread northeast for about three miles in 24 hours, growing to more than 82,000 acres.

In a virtual community meeting Saturday night, Incident Commander Rocky Opliger said, “We’re looking at unprecedented early season extreme fire behavior…much earlier than we’ve experienced before.”

Highway 395 was closed at times Saturday north of Highway 70.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the area through Tuesday. The weather forecast for Doyle, CA Sunday afternoon calls for 104 degrees, strong winds out of the southwest Sunday of 21 mph gusting at 32 mph, and 9 percent relative humidity. The wind will subside Sunday night but will increase Monday afternoon — 22 mph gusting out of the southwest at 34 mph with 9 percent RH.

These conditions will make it a challenge for firefighters to make much progress in suppressing the fire.

The Biden administration has been pushing a more aggressive vaccination campaign as the Delta variant continues to spread. POLITICO reported that the government is now administering less than 400,000 doses per day, a significant drop from the rush to get vaccinated seen only a few months ago.

“Although it’s understandable — quite understandable that some people might say, ‘Well, we want to wait for the full approval,’ that’s really only a technical issue,” Fauci said. “It’s the FDA dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. But there’s no doubt in my mind that these vaccines are going to get full approval because of the extraordinary amount of positive data.”

As the fall approaches and states figure out how to increase safe in-person learning for students, parents and educators debate who should wear a mask and when. Fauci said the guidance is clear — follow the CDC guidelines. If you’re unvaccinated, wear a mask, but if you’re vaccinated, it’s not necessary.

“The bottom line is we need to get the children back in school, in-person classes in the fall,” said Fauci.

The remarks reflected recent efforts by Trump and his supporters to cast themselves as the aggrieved parties from the Jan. 6 riot, which left five people dead and others injured — and, for a brief time, halted the wheels of democracy as President-elect Joe Biden’s victory over Trump in the Electoral College was being confirmed by Congress.

Trump’s reference to “great people” was similar to his remarks after the fatal confrontation in Charlottesville. “You had some very bad people in that group,” he said in August 2017. “But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides.”

In his interview with Bartiromo, Trump said those at the events of Jan. 6 were loving people who wanted to save the nation.

“The crowd was unbelievable and I mentioned the word ‘love,’ the love in the air, I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said of his rally on the Ellipse. “That’s why they went to Washington.”

He added: “Too much spirit and faith and love, there was such love at that rally, you had over a million people,” inflating the size of his rally crowd.

After Trump’s speech, the Capitol was invaded by backers of his seeking to disrupt the Electoral College count. On the way in, they battled with police officers; according to the Department of Justice, approximately 140 police officers were assaulted. Hundreds of those who entered the Capitol have been charged with various crimes, including more than 50 who have been charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer.

Trump and Bartiromo both expressed outrage over the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt within the Capitol, implying repeatedly that there was a cover-up at work. Babbitt, an Air Force veteran, was fatally shot as she tried to climb through a broken window during the insurrection.

“Who is the person that shot an innocent, wonderful, incredible woman, a military woman, right in the head?” Trump said. “There is no repercussion — that were on the other side, it would be the biggest story in this country. Who shot Ashli Babbitt? People want to know and why.”

Bartiromo then referred to Babbitt as “a wonderful woman fatally shot on January 6 as she tried to climb out of a broken window.” Their remarks echoed those of some of Trump’s backers, including Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), who has claimed Babbitt was “executed.”

Referring to his remarks to the crowd before they stormed the Capitol as “a very mild-mannered speech,” Trump also suggested that the blame for any violence that day could be placed on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats because they didn’t take the potential for violence seriously.

“They are the ones that were responsible,” he said.

Three people have been shot outside of a barbershop following an argument between two men in their 40’s allegedly over who came first in a foot race over a month ago.

The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, in northeast Houston when the Houston Police Department received a call regarding a shooting involving several victims outside the Mean Kutz barbershop, according to ABC News’ Houston station KTRK.

“There were two males that were arguing outside the barbershop here over who ran a race faster,” said Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Wendy Baimbridge told KTRK in a short press conference following the shooting. “So at that point, one of the victims started walking away from the argument. The suspect then shot him twice in the shoulder.”

Two innocent bystanders who were inside the barbershop at the time were also struck in the shootout. One was shot in the rear end while the other was shot in the arm, according to Baimbridge.

The suspect who initially began firing subsequently fled the scene of the crime traveling eastbound away from the barbershop in a black Nissan Frontier. Authorities said they do not have the vehicle’s license plate at this time.

The Houston Police Department confirmed that they have gathered video evidence from the phone of a witness as well as surveillance footage from a liquor store next to the barbershop.

One victim was taken to Kingwood Hospital to be treated while the other two were taken to Memorial Hospital. None of the three people who were shot suffered life-threatening injuries and all are expected to survive.

“I just came to get a haircut but that didn’t go as planned,” said one woman who witnessed the shooting.

The suspect is currently at large and major assault detectives are currently investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Houston Police Department’s Major Assault Division or Crime Stoppers.

DALLAS – Critical race theory and how students, parents and public officials should handle it is a major topic across the country, from local school board meetings to governors’ mansions.

It was a major topic at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas as well, with two separate panels addressing the topic, including a major one scheduled for Sunday morning. The discussion, titled “Head of the Class: Why is the Left Committed to CRT When So Many Parents Disagree?” will feature high-profile speakers including Club for Growth’s David McIntosh and activist Ian Prior.

Many CPAC attendees weighed in on the topic during interviews with Fox News as well, giving their thoughts on how students, parents and public officials should handle the controversial doctrine in the classroom.

“They should pay attention to their children and what they say when they come home from school,” Kathleen Caso, the president of the Lost Pines Republican Women, told Fox News. “Don’t criticize, listen. If there’s thing that go against what they’ve been teaching their children, then they need to go to a school board meeting.”

Kate Bush, an aunt and great aunt from Houston, told Fox News that parents should read their kids’ school books so they understand what they are learning in the classroom. (Tyler Olson/Fox News)

POWER BRIEFLY GOES OUT AT CPAC, MASSIVE CONSERVAITVE POLITICAL CONFERENCE

Caso said her group runs a “community committee” that sends volunteers to school board meetings, who then report back what they learn.

“It’s simple. if you care enough about your community and your children, you have to be active. You cannot sit back anymore,” Caso added.

“We all need to read the books that our kids are being forced to read so that we can have an honest conversation with them,” Kate Bush from Houston said.

She added that she’s not sure passing laws banning CRT will be particularly effective, and that close involvement is parents’ best bet.

“I don’t know that passing laws do any good at all. Generally a lot of the laws that are passed are either ignored or it creates anger. But we have to get rid of the critical theory,” Bush said.

Julie Pickren, a candidate for Texas State Board of Education, meanwhile argued that parents should pay attention to not just what their kids say, but the internal workings of schools.

Zachary Wanuga, a student at Salisbury University in Maryland, told Fox News that direct action like contacting donors to universities is one way people can fight back against critical race theory. (Tyler Olson/Fox News)

“We have to learn to recognize it in our schools. In the schools you’re going to see it a lot through equity and equity audits,” she said.

Zachary Wanuga, a student at Salisbury University in Maryland, pushed for a more direct activist approach, especially with colleges.

“There’s a way to fight back,” he said. “And the way to do it is use your words and use your money. Go to your schools. Don’t send your kid to an indoctrination camp on college. Use your money. Email the alumni of the schools, email the donors, say this is what they’re teaching my kids in school.”

And Kathy McWhorter, a mother and grandmother from Georgetown, Texas, said that parents need to consider running for elected office – where education policy is made.

“Being on school boards, getting into elected offices so that you know what the curriculum is that is being taught and you can take a stand and see if you can change that curriculum and get critical race theory out of our schools,” she said.

CPAC comes to a close Sunday, with a keynote speech from former President Donald Trump. Also expected to be major issues at the conference, and in Trump’s speech, are immigration, coronavirus health measures and potential Republican primary challenges in 2022.

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. (AP) — Thrill-seeking billionaire Richard Branson strapped in and set off Sunday on his boldest adventure yet — a bid to reach space aboard his own winged rocket ship.

A successful flight would vault the nearly 71-year-old Branson past fellow billionaire and rival Jeff Bezos, who is planning to fly to space in a craft of his own nine days from now.

With a crowd of more than 500 people watching, a twin-fuselage aircraft with Branson’s space plane attached underneath took off in the first stage of the flight. Aboard were Branson and five crewmates from his Virgin Galactic space-tourism company.

The plan was for the space plane to detach from the mother ship at an altitude of about 8 miles (13 kilometers), fire its rocket engine and then pierce the edge of space at about 55 miles (88 kilometers) up. After a few minutes of weightlessness for the crew, the space plane was supposed to glide to a runway landing.

The flight was intended as a confidence-boosting plug for Virgin Galactic, which plans to start taking paying customers on joyrides next year.

“It’s a beautiful day to go to space,” Branson tweeted in the morning, posting a photo of himself with fellow billionaire and space-tourism rival Elon Musk.

Branson, the flamboyant, London-born founder of Virgin Atlantic Airways, wasn’t supposed to fly until later this summer. But he assigned himself to an earlier flight after Bezos announced plans to ride his own rocket ship into space from Texas on July 20.

More than 600 people have already made reservations for a ride into space with Virgin Galactic, founded in 2004.

Bezos’ Blue Origin has yet to open ticket sales or even announce prices, but late last week boasted via Twitter that it would take clients higher and offer bigger windows.

Unlike Blue Origin and Musk’s SpaceX both launch capsules atop rockets.

Virgin Galactic made three previous test flights into space with a crew.

The extreme heat wave gripping the Western United States and Canada is spurring wildfires in several U.S. states and British Columbia.

Driving the news: Evacuation orders were issued in California, Oregon, Idaho, and B.C. In Arizona, two firefighters died when their aircraft crashed while responding to a wildfire in Mohave County, per a Bureau of Land Management statement.

  • Oregon’s Bootleg fire was threatening transmission lines that supply California with power after doubling in size to 120 square miles on Saturday.
  • A huge wildfire in Northern California’s Plumas National Forest, known as the Beckwourth Complex, “generated its own lightning,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Evacuation orders: The Beckwourth Complex blaze, the combination of two fires, saw the evacuation of 2,800 people and the closure of the forest as it burned across some 55,000 acres in total, per AP.

  • The southern Oregon wildfire triggered mandatory evacuations as it threatened some 3,000 homes, CBS News notes.
  • A brush fire in Southern California’s eastern San Diego County saw two Native American reservations evacuated on Saturday, AP reports.
  • There were also evacuations in the small, remote community of Dixie in north-central Idaho, according to AP.
  • In Canada, a new wildfire near Vernon, British Columbia, on Saturday triggered evacuations as it burned across some 25 acres of land, according to local news outlet Castanet.

Of note: California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday built on his emergency proclamation made a day earlier to free up additional energy capacity.

  • Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R) issued an emergency declaration for wildfire on Friday that mobilized National Guard firefighters and aircraft to assist in firefighting efforts.

The hospitalized wife of Haiti’s assassinated President Jovenel Moïse Saturday accused her husband’s enemies of wanting “to kill his dream, his vision, his ideology.”

“I’m alive, thanks to God,” Martine Moïse, 47, said in her first reported statement since the Wednesday raid, in which she was shot multiple times.

“But I love my husband, Jovenel. We fought together for more than 25 years. During all these years, love radiated within the home. But suddenly, the mercenaries came and pelted my husband with bullets.

“You have to be a notorious criminal without guts to assassinate a president like Jovenel Moïse with impunity, without giving him the chance to speak,” she added in a recording made at a Miami hospital, where she is being treated.

“You knew who the president was fighting against.”

While The Associated Press reported that the statement was released by Martine Moïse, The Haitian Times, an English language news outlet based in Brooklyn, claimed the tape was a “deep fake.”

It said the voice in the audio was different from previous recordings of the first lady, and that her Twitter account, where the recording was posted, was hacked.

The statement came as Haiti was reeling in the aftermath of the killing, and shortly after a third politician claimed to be the country’s leader

Joseph Lambert (center) has also claimed power in Haiti.

Joseph Lambert, who leads what remains of the Haitian Senate, announced that he was voted provisional president by his fellow senators Friday evening.

But the vote took place among just 10 senators, as the rest of the 30-member chamber left office in January. Since Haiti has yet to hold new elections, those members were never replaced.

Lambert joined two others seeking to rule the nation since Moïse, 53, was killed.

Claude Joseph, who had resigned as prime minister, took charge of the government and named himself acting president in the hours after the assassination. Ariel Henry, whom Moïse had named prime minister but had not yet taken office, also claims he should be in charge.

The US and the UN have recognized Joseph, who on Friday asked both bodies to deploy troops to Haiti. While the streets are quiet, the fear of violence is widespread.

A senior US official told Reuters there were “no plans to provide US military assistance at this time.”

More than a dozen former members of Colombia’s military were arrested for the pre-dawn attack that killed Moïse and injured his wife. At least two were killed in a shootout. Two Haitian-Americans were also arrested, although they have claimed they were only translators in an interview with a judge.

DALLAS – Once again, the biggest draw will go last.

Just as he did at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando in February, former President Donald Trump will close this weekend’s CPAC gathering in Texas by delivering the event’s headliner speech.

The American Conservative Union, which organizes the largest and most influential annual gathering of conservative activists and leaders, says that the former president will be the last major speaker at the three-day CPAC gathering in Dallas. Trump is scheduled to address the crowd at 3:35 p.m. CT.

DONALD TRUMP JR. SAYS HE’LL BE ‘VERY INVOLVED’ ON 2022 CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Asked about the former president’s address, Trump’s eldest son teased that “with my father, you never know, right.”

“I can assure you it’s going to be interesting. I can assure you people will be outraged,” Donald Trump Jr. said in an interview with Fox News on Friday, ahead of his own speech at CPAC.

The conference comes as Trump, five-and-a-half months removed from the White House, remains extremely popular with Republican voters and continues to hold sway over GOP politicians, as he plays a kingmaker role in party politics and flirts repeatedly with another presidential run in 2024.

The conference also comes amid Trump’s most active schedule of events since the end of his presidency.

VOTING UNDERWAY IN CPAC DALLAS 2024 GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION STRAW POLL

The former president traveled to Ohio two weeks ago to hold his first campaign style rally since leaving the White House. And he held a second rally a week later in Sarasota, Florida.

He also teamed up with Republican Gov. Greg Abbott at an event along the U.S.-Mexico border, in front of an unfinished portion of the border wall begun during his tenure in the White House. And this past week he held a news conference at his golf club in New Jersey to announce a lawsuit against Facebook, Google and Twitter, which have banned him from posting on their social media platforms.

At his recent rallies, Trump took aim at his successor. He slammed President Biden, as he spotlighted the issues of crime and immigration, charging that “our streets are being overtaken by vicious thugs and bloodthirsty criminals,” and claiming that “our border is being erased before our very eyes.”

Trump also spotlighted the culture wars, arguing that “Critical Race Theory is being shoved down our children’s throats and into the ranks of our military.” And he zeroed in on the political battle over transgender rights, emphasizing that “men are allowed to play in women’s sports, so unfair, so crazy.”

Expect similar language on Sunday, as Trump addresses CPAC.

American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp told Fox News that Trump will also use his speech to emphasize “the fight against Big Tech and the fight against illegal immigration – the fight to fire Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.”

“I think he’s got masterful plan to do that, and I think that he’ll be sharing that with folks,” Schlapp said.

Miami-Dade County Courthouse employees were told to work from home Friday after safety concerns were identified with the building, CBS Miami reports

“Out of an abundance of caution in response to the tragedy in Surfside, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Miami-Dade Courts administrators asked engineers to conduct an assessment of all County buildings at the recertification point including the Dade County Courthouse,” county officials said.

“The engineer’s report of the Courthouse identified safety concerns with various floors and recommended floors 16 and above to be closed to staff.”

The courthouse building, which has 28 floors, was completed in 1928. Most civil cases are heard at the building, which also contains some administrative offices.

“We know there have been problems in this building, so this one was elevated and some structural concerns were identified, some columns that needed to be- some support work that needed to be done,” Levine Cava said at a Saturday press conference. “This was known and the activities had continued, but given the circumstances, we’ve already authorized that repair work to begin.”

Levine Cava said employees had only been back in the building for about a week after working remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

CBS Miami reports that people who had a court proceeding and were scheduled to appear in person will receive new notices with instructions for remote access.

The death toll in the condo building collapse in Surfside has continued to climb.  Officials said there were 86 confirmed deaths as of Saturday morning.

Another 43 people are potentially unaccounted for.

“Please pray for all of those who have lost loved ones and whose hearts are broken from this unspeakable tragedy, and for those who are still waiting,” said Levine Cava.

It was the third time this summer that the city activated cooling centers, said Daniel Bowers, the city’s director of emergency management. Last summer, Sacramento activated cooling centers only three times during the entire season — the third time was not until September.

This year, the city launched its heat response early when a heat wave pounded much of Northern California over Memorial Day weekend.

“That was kind of an eye-opener of how the summer was going to go,” Mr. Bowers said. With its fair share of practice in recent years, he said, the city is well prepared for the weekend temperatures. But the high nighttime temperatures pose particular risks to people who are homeless, he said.

Further down the valley in Modesto, which could experience highs of 109 degrees this weekend, the Salvation Army said it had seen an uptick in people seeking shelter.

The shelter is “seeing individuals we normally wouldn’t see — normally people that are OK being in their tents, they’re OK sleeping outside,” said Virginia Carney, the shelter director.

Terri Castle, who has been staying at the Modesto shelter for the past month, said she had spent previous summers living on the street and worried for people who did not have a place to cool off this weekend.

“When you’re homeless you’re already out in the weather 24/7,” Ms. Castle said. “And when the sun hits you, it’s hard to find anywhere for shade. You can’t get enough water.” Over her few weeks at the shelter, she said, she has noticed a surge in people seeking relief from the heat.

MIAMI – The First Lady of Haiti, Martine Moïse, is being heard from publicly for the first time since she was badly injured during the assassination of her husband, Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.

On Saturday, Moïse posted an audio message on her personal Twitter account.

In the message, she says, “I’m alive by God’s grace, but I lost my husband Jovenel.”

Moïse arrived in South Florida for medical treatment Wednesday afternoon, several hours after the early-morning attack took place outside the Port Au-Prince home she shares with her husband.

About the attack, she said, “One blink of an eye, mercenaries came to my house and riddled my husband with bullets.”

“After 25 years of marriage they took my husband away from me. I knew going into politics wasn’t going to be easy. We must continue the fight. Jovenel was for the people. They assassinated him because he wanted to change the country. We must stand up and continue the fight…he was fighting for us, and we must continue fighting for him.”
