WASHINGTON—Islamic State’s leader detonated an explosive, killing himself and four members of his family during a nighttime raid by U.S. special operations forces in northwestern Syria, President Biden said.
The mission, termed a success by White House officials, eliminated a top terrorist leader in the Middle East who officials said posed a threat to the American homeland. The mission also handed Mr. Biden a foreign-policy victory amid a vexing crisis in Ukraine and domestic problems at home.
