SAN JOSE — One person was dead and another taken to a hospital after an officer-involved shooting early Tuesday, authorities said.

That shooting happened around 2:25 a.m. on Leigh Avenue at Fruitdale Avenue, and no officers were injured, San Jose police Lt. Enrique Garcia said.

The dead person’s identity was not immediately available, and the injured person was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Garcia said.

This is the sixth officer-involved shooting in San Jose this year. The department’s most recent incident was a 10-hour standoff on Barrow Drive last month.

Two of this year’s shootings have been fatal, including one Jan. 9 when a man thought to be suicidal was shot and killed while reportedly approaching officers with an ax.

Last year, eight officer-involved shootings were recorded in the city, half of which were fatal.

According to tweets from a reporter for news partner KGO-TV, that shooting happened near Sherman Oaks Elementary School.

And a tweet from an NBC Bay Area reporter said a witness saw a vehicle collide with a patrol vehicle before shots rang out.
