i’m jean jadhon new details tonight about human remains found in amherst county. deputies say two people discovered part of a skull on the banks of the james river. the off twist is that they held onto it for several months and never notified authorities. wdbj7’s tim saunders is following this story from our lynchburg bedford newsroom. tim, how did investigators ultimately find out about the skull? jean, one of the people who found it told a friend, who then called the amherst county sheriff’s office. the bone was located in an isolated part of amherst county, near the joshua falls area of the james river. a man and woman were walking along the river’s edge a few months ago when they saw the fragment and took it back to their trailer. the discovery remained a secret for several months, before the woman told one of her friends and that person ended up calling 9-1-1. deputies had to execute a search warrant to confiscate the remains. a medical examiner has determined that the bone was part of a human skull, but they don’t know how old it might be or where it came from. lieutenant greg turner/amherst county sheriff’s office: “being in th river plane it may have washed down from another area. it could be from the lowlands there. it could be any number of years old. until we get further information, we really don’t know.” turner says the medical examiner’s office in roanoke will try to extract mitochondrial d-n-a from the skull to determine its age and other identifying information. search warrants indicate the bone fragment looked like the top or crown of a skull, according to the friend who called 9-1-1. i asked the sheriff’s office whether the bone might be connected to any missing people in the area. investigators tell me that there is at least one unsolved case in the county, but they’ll need more information about the age of the bone before looking into any possible connections. live in the lynchburg bedford newsroom, tim
