Sen. Bob CorkerRobert (Bob) Phillips CorkerSunday shows preview: Washington heads into multi-day shutdown WHIP LIST: Who’s in and out in the 2020 race Senate agrees to last-ditch talks, but no clear path over shutdown MORE (R-Tenn.) blasted President TrumpDonald John TrumpTrump defends foreign policy decisions amid personnel resignations Sunday shows preview: Washington heads into multi-day shutdown Lawmakers shrug off shutdown drama MORE on Sunday after Trump claimed that the Republican was forced to retire after not getting the president’s support.

“Yes, just like Mexico is paying for the wall,” Corker tweeted, before using the hashtag “#AlertTheDaycareStaff.”

Coker has been repeatedly critical of the Trump administration, and has previously referred to the White House as an “an adult day care center.”

The latest statement from Corker came after Trump ripped into the senator over an earlier Sunday show appearance in a pair of tweets.

“Senator Bob Corker just stated that, ‘I’m so [privileged] to serve in the Senate for twelve years, and that’s what I told the people of our state that’s what I’d do, serve for two terms.’ But that is Not True – wanted to run but poll numbers TANKED when I wouldn’t endorse him,” Trump tweeted earlier Sunday.

“Bob Corker was responsible for giving us the horrible Iran Nuclear Deal, which I ended, yet he badmouths me for wanting to bring our young people safely back home,” Trump continued, referencing his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria.

“Bob wanted to run and asked for my endorsement. I said NO and the game was over. #MAGA I LOVE TENNESSEE!” he continued.

Earlier on Sunday, Corker called the standoff over a border wall that has shut down federal agencies a “made-up fight” that is more about Trump scoring political points.

Trump has demanded that Congress provide $5 billion for his long-sought wall along the southern border in a new spending bill. The failure to reach an agreement on the topic by Friday led to a partial government shutdown that could last for days.

“This is a made-up fight so the president can look like he’s fighting but even if he wins, our borders are going to be insecure,” Corker said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Corker announced earlier this year that he would not run for reelection. Trump has repeatedly claimed that Corker decided to retire because he didn’t have Trump’s support.

But last year, Corker’s chief of staff Todd Womack claimed that Trump had pushed the Tennessee senator to run again and offered his endorsement should Corker decide to do so.

The 2020 Democratic presidential primary field can accommodate two Texas Democrats, said White House hopeful Julian Castro.

“Oh, I have no doubt,” Castro told NBC News’ “Meet The Press” on Sunday, when asked whether there was enough room in the race for himself and party darling Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who lost his 2018 Texas Senate bid against incumbent Republican Ted Cruz. “There are going to be a whole bunch of folks that are running this time.”

“He’s a very talented, very impressive guy,” Castro said of the 46-year-old O’Rourke. “My brother Joaquin and I were proud to support him when he ran against Ted Cruz, and I think that there are probably going to be 20 people up on that first debate stage.”

The 44-year-old Castro, an Obama-era Housing and Urban Development Secretary and the former mayor of San Antonio, formed a presidential exploratory committee this month that will allow him, among other things, to start fundraising ahead of a formal announcement set for Jan. 12.

Castro on Sunday also hit back at criticism from the Texas Observer’s Christopher Hooks, who in November argued that Castro and O’Rourke should concentrate on turning Texas into a purple state rather than pursue their own presidential ambitions.

“Good Democratic candidates can win. There’s work to be done here and it’s important work. Run for president, and the message is that you’re not especially interested in that. And, just maybe, Texans shouldn’t be that interested in you,” Hooks wrote last month in a piece titled “Dear Beto and Julian, please don’t run for president.”

But Castro on Sunday said his attention was fixed on his “strong vision for our country’s future,” not on defeating statewide Republicans like Sen. John Cornyn in 2020 and Gov. Greg Abbott in 2022.

“I’m sure there are going to be great candidates that will run not only against John Cornyn, but in 2022 for governor and other statewide offices, and so that’s not what I’m focused on,” Castro said.
