Hillary Clinton said that attending President Trump’s inauguration was one of the most difficult days of her life.
Clinton made the remarks Wednesday during an interview with radio personality Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show. She said that she was crushed by seeing Trump sworn in as president.
“You know, I went to the inauguration of Donald Trump, which was one of the hardest days of my life, to be honest,” Clinton said.
“When you’re standing there watching this guy, what the hell is going through your head?” Stern asked, noting that he was watching her even more than he was watching Trump.
“Obviously, I was crushed, I was disappointed, and I was really surprised because I couldn’t figure out what had happened,” she said.
Clinton pointed out that when Trump was inaugurated, she attended the ceremony as a former first lady and out of a sense of duty for the tradition.
“A lot of people said to me, ‘Don’t put yourself through that, don’t go,’” Clinton recalled, “and I said, ‘Look, I ran for president because I love this country, I wanted to serve this country, I thought I would have been a really good president.’”
Clinton said she told people prior to the inauguration that she hoped that Trump would be a better president than she expected.
“And then he started on that speech, which was so bizarre, and that’s when I got really worried,” Clinton said. “It’s not politics, it’s not what a president does. A president is supposed to try to reach out to people who weren’t for him or her.”
“I hoped I would hear a little bit of that. I didn’t hear any of that,” she added.
Clinton said that former President George W. Bush felt just as perplexed by the speech and said to her after, “That was some weird shit.”
