and i’m chris hurst. it’s been six years in the making, and now someone is charged with morgan harrington’s murder. that someone is jesse matthew, the same man accused of killing u-v-a student hannah graham. wdbj 7’s nadine maeser is live tonight in charlottesville with details from matthew’s first day in court in the harrington case. chris, this hearing lasted about six minutes. jesse matthew was inside the courtroom and harrington’s parents sat just feet away from him, looking at him, thinking this is it. this is the day we’ve been waiting for. gil harrington: “since day one, w said lets do this day as big as we can and as hard as we can to try and find the person that killed morgan.” dan and gil harrington say they finally feel like they have some sort of closure after their daughter’s murder. gil harrington: “it’ kinda like a dirty little secret that we have all known and assumed is now more transparent and open for the world.” jesse matthew is the man investigators say killed morgan harrington back in october 2009. he’s charged with abduction and first degree murder. dan harrington says it’s important for him to be inside the courtroom, just feet away from the man accused of killing his daughter. dan harrington: “there was a direc look at gil and me. he stared at us. he knows that we are here.” what started out as a plea for help years ago has now transitioned into a plea for hope. hope that the justice system will find the truth. gil harrington: “w realize we have to find another rhythm and pace as we switch from our first marathon into our second marathon.” and they’re starting here, on this bridge. it’s the last the place morgan harrington was seen alive in charlottesville. ribbons, pictures and messages saying “w made it” are here t tell morgan she will finally have her day in court. gil harrington: “we’re along for th ride and grateful to be here in this point in time.” and it’s a ride they won’t have to do alone. friends and family of u-v-a student hannah graham are also putting their faith in the justice system. matthew is accused of killing both women, but their cases will not intertwine. denise lunsford: “they are completel separate cases, completely separate facts.” but for gil harringotn, the pain for both is the same. and while morgan and hannah came from two very different worlds, they will always be linked together by what gil calls a monster. gil harrington: “w share a bizarre, obscene link is our catalyst with the grahams that is quite likely that the same person stopped the hearts of both of our girls.” thing to keep in mind is dna connects him to three cases. matthew’s defense team has their hands full. matthew will be back in court here in charlottesville on september 30th. he has two seperate hearings. one for morgan and the other for hannah. just a couple days later, he will be in fairfax. that’s where he will be sentenced for rape case from 10 years ago. he was convicted earlier this year in it. live in cville, nm, wdbj 7. we’re learning
