Former Vice President Joe Biden described himself as the Democratic Party’s best bet to beat President Trump in 2020, according to a report.

“If you can persuade me there is somebody better who can win, I’m happy not to do it. But I don’t see the candidate who can clearly do what has to be done to win,” Biden told a Democratic confidant, the New York Times reported on Sunday. “But I don’t see the candidate who can clearly do what has to be done to win,” he added.

Biden, who last month described himself as the “most qualified person in the country to be president,” is poised to announce whether he’ll seek his party’s nomination in 2020 by the end of January due to mounting pressure from Democratic donors urging him not to drag out his decision-making process like he did in 2016, according to the Times. Biden advisers told the paper the former vice president and senator, who bowed out of contention four years ago because of his son Beau’s death, would likely run on a platform that touts his liberal policy priorities and Washington experience.

Vanity Fair reported in December that Biden was upset former President Barack Obama, with whom he served in the White House, was meeting with other 2020 Democratic hopefuls. Biden’s spokesman Bill Russo dismissed the story’s description as “unequivocally false. Period.”
