Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea in December, has been heavily linked with Van Gaal’s job at Old Trafford, with the Dutchman under huge pressure to keep his job.
And Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias claim the 53-year-old has now agreed a three-year deal worth £15.75million to become the next United boss.
The report adds that the only reason Van Gaal has not been sacked by United is because it would cost the club £12.5m.
But that figure will be less if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.
