Law enforcement agencies around the country are actively monitoring online threats and rhetoric that has emerged in the wake of the FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate Monday, sources tell ABC News.

Agencies are also preparing for possible acts of violence they fear could occur at or near pro-Trump demonstrations that some supporters are calling for, law enforcement sources said.

Authorities on Monday morning searched Trump’s Florida estate in what sources told ABC News was part of a probe into documents that Trump improperly took to Mar-a-Lago when he departed the White House, some of which the National Archives has said were marked classified.

“Over the last several months, law enforcement officials across the nation have become increasingly concerned about calls for violence against law enforcement and other government officials by violent extremists,” said John Cohen, a former Department of Homeland Security official who is now an ABC News contributor. “The search warrant at Mar-a-Lago has only served to increase those calls, adding to law enforcement concerns.”

In the aftermath of the raid, Trump supporters called for protests at FBI offices in Riverside, California, and Washington, D.C., according to online messages collected by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a think tank that monitors extremism and hate speech.

The ISD reported that one Trump supporter was “calling on fellow veterans and Americans of all walks to join him” in Washington “to protest the out-of-control FBI and its actions against President Trump,” while a post by another supporter implored followers to “Protest FBI tyranny.”

Cohen says authorities have grown even more concerned as public figures have echoed those kind of remarks.

“We now face a situation where public officials and members of the media are mimicking the language used by violent extremists, and this has served to add more volatility to the situation,” he said.

Evan worse, said Cohen, “there’s been talk about a range of conspiracy theories regarding what the FBI was doing at Mar-a-Lago. And when public figures — especially those who have previously served in law enforcement — spread wild conspiracy theories that they know are false, it’s not only irresponsible but dangerous.”

On the other hand, Cohen said, authorities have become better at monitoring threats and acting on them.

“Following the events at the Capitol on Jan. 6, law enforcement has improved its ability to analyze online activities by violent extremists, taking threats made online more seriously and incorporating that understanding into their security planning,” he said.

WASHINGTON, Jan 24 (Reuters) – (Note: This story contains language in paragraph 3 that may offend some readers)

U.S. President Joe Biden was caught on a hot mic cursing a Fox News reporter at a White House event on Monday after the journalist shouted a question about the impact of rising inflation on this year’s congressional elections.

As journalists were ushered out of a meeting of Biden’s Competition Council, Peter Doocy, a White House correspondent with whom Biden regularly spars, asked if it was OK to ask about inflation and if it was a political liability.

“That’s a great asset, more inflation,” Biden responded sarcastically over a din of reporters shouting questions, apparently not realizing his microphone was still on. “What a stupid son of a bitch,” he added.

U.S. consumer prices increased solidly in December, culminating in the largest annual rise in inflation in nearly four decades.

Within about an hour of the exchange, Biden called Doocy’s cell phone and said “it’s nothing personal, pal,” Doocy later told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment while Fox News pointed Reuters to a transcript of an interview with Doocy about the exchange on Monday evening.

Biden took office a year ago pledging to take a hard line on any disrespect among members of his administration.

“If you’re ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot … no ifs, ands or buts,” Biden told political appointees during a virtual swearing-in ceremony. “Everybody is entitled to be treated with decency and dignity,” he said at the time.

Biden’s predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, famously attacked reporters at rallies and news conferences, to the delight of many of his supporters.

Doocy, who has long covered Biden, regularly gets called on by the president at events, often asking skeptical and critical questions. Conservative-leaning Fox News has been critical of Biden’s presidency and Democrats.

“And we also discussed Christians, and I had a very powerful answer from the prime minister,” he added without offering too many specifics about Modi’s answer. “We talked about religious liberty for a long period of time in front of a lot of people. And I had a very, very powerful answer. … And he said that they are working very closely with the Muslim community.”

It was an issue that loomed over Trump’s entire visit to India, which included a massive political-style rally at the world’s largest cricket stadium and discussions over a potential future trade deal.

Trump and Modi both rode into office on the back of nationalist, protectionist rhetoric and have since constantly faced questions over whether their subsequent policies unfairly target Muslims. In the U.S., critics have pointed in particular to Trump’s travel ban restricting travel from several majority-Muslim countries.

After Trump landed in India, observers carefully parsed his words to see whether he would address the situation in India, which has seen months of protests over the citizenship law.

In a speech Monday at Motera Stadium in the western city of Ahmedabad, Trump talked about religious freedom, praising India’s history of letting Hindus, Muslims and Christians worship freely, a pointed message in India that also plays well with Christian evangelicals in the U.S.

“Your nation has always been admired around the Earth as the place where millions upon millions of Hindus and Muslims and Sikhs and Jains, Buddhists, Christians, and Jews worship side by side in harmony,” he said. “Your unity is an inspiration to the world.”

But such religious harmony has not been evident in recent weeks, with widespread protests over the citizenship law. The latest demonstrations were among the most violent to date.

Trump used questions about the law Tuesday to again defend his travel ban, which he signed just a week into his term, causing massive nationwide protests and prompting lawsuits.

“I won the travel ban, as you probably know,” he said. “A lot of people said I lost it. I won the travel ban. And we use the travel ban not based on religion, but where we think there’s going to be trouble, where we’re looking at certain countries. … So the travel ban is not a thing against Muslims.”

Trump also inexplicably said Modi had told him India had 14 million Muslims “a fairly short while ago” and now has 200 million Muslims. While there are roughly 200 million Muslims in the country today, that number has not been increasing nearly as rapidly as Trump indicated.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said Friday the development of a coronavirus vaccine must be for the benefit of all countries, calling it a “responsibility to the entire planet.”

That responsibility is “not just to the individual country that’s making the vaccine,” he said during a virtual presentation at the COVID-19 Conference.

Full coverage of the coronavirus outbreak

Because of this, he continued, the companies that the U.S. government is working with are “already in discussion to start gearing up to make hundreds of millions of doses.” Some companies are promising to have a billion doses of a vaccine within a year or so, he added.

There were likely to be several types of vaccines for the virus, which work in different ways.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, likened the development of these different vaccines to taking “multiple shots on goal” in hockey. There are “some that you could get off quickly and ramp up quickly, some that have more experience, and some that we know are tried and true.”

An mRNA vaccine was one that researchers were able to get off the ground quickly, he said. Moderna, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company, started the first clinical trial in the United States with its mRNA-based vaccine in March. This type of vaccine uses genetic material to teach cells how to defend against the coronavirus.

Another type of vaccine, which uses the virus’ protein to teach cells to fight it, took longer to develop but was not any less important, he said.

The COVID-19 Conference brought together experts from around the world to discuss the latest science on the disease that’s infected more than 12 million people globally and caused more than 550,000 deaths.

During the same session, Fauci pointed out the challenges of containing the spread of the virus from asymptomatic individuals.

“The situation that we’re facing in the U.S. is significant and serious in that we have community spread in areas where many of these individuals are without symptoms,” he said. “That is complicating our task.”

Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator, who also spoke at Friday’s session, noted the importance of finding asymptomatic cases.

“This is something that has been done so extraordinarily well in HIV, where you have to find the asymptomatic individuals to stop community spread,” she said. “Same principle in this respiratory disease.”

Qual é o melhor Doodle do Google? Comente no Fórum do TechTudo.

Even as Ms. Pelosi vowed in San Francisco to protect those climate provisions, at least four people in Washington close to the negotiations called the clean electricity program “dead.”

Senator Tina Smith, Democrat of Minnesota, the chief author of the program, said that while dropping it might win Mr. Manchin’s vote on the budget bill, it could cost hers — and those of other environmentally-minded Democrats.

“We must have strong climate action in the Build Back Better budget. I’m open to all approaches, but as I’ve said, I will not support a budget deal that does not get us where we need to go on climate action,” she said. “There are 50 Democratic senators and it’s going to take every one of our votes to get this budget passed.”

Mr. Manchin, who has personal financial ties to the coal industry, had initially intended to write the details of the program as the chairman of the Senate committee on energy and natural resources. Mr. Manchin was considering a clean electricity program that would reward utilities for switching from coal to natural gas, which is less polluting but still emits carbon dioxide and can leak methane, another greenhouse gas. Mr. Manchin’s home state, West Virginia, is one of the nation’s top producers of coal and gas.

But in recent days, Mr. Manchin indicated to the administration that he was now completely opposed to a clean energy program, people familiar with the discussions said.

As a result, White House staffers are scrambling to calculate the impact on emissions from other climate measures in the bill, including tax incentives for renewable energy producers and tax credits for consumers who purchase electric vehicles. Unlike a clean energy program, tax incentives tend to expire after a set period of time, and do not have the market-shifting power of a more durable strategy.

National Security Council expert Fiona Hill explained during her testimony on Thursday why the conspiracy theory that Ukraine, not Russia, was responsible for the 2016 U.S. election interference is false. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff asked Hill how the theory served Russian interests, and Hill responded: “The Russians interests are frankly to delegitimize our entire presidency.”

WASHINGTON — Utah Sen. Mitt Romney called today’s violent protests in the US Capitol where one woman died “an insurrection, incited by the President of the United States.”

Romney’s comments on President Trump’s supporters storming the building Wednesday came after many of his political colleagues from around the state chimed in on the unprecedented events.

Some of politicians who supported President Trump’s unending efforts to overturn the election are now condemning many of his supporters for their violent occupation of the US Capitol.

But it was Romney’s statement that offered the harshest take on the president and those elected officials who have backed him up.

“We gather today due to a selfish man’s injured pride and the outrage of his supporters whom he has deliberately misinformed for the past two months and stirred to action this very morning,” wrote Romney. “Those who choose to continue to support his dangerous gambit by objecting to the results of a legitimate, democratic election will forever be seen as being complicit in an unprecedented attack against our democracy.”

“They will be remembered for their role in this shameful episode in American history. That will be their legacy.”

The counting of the Electoral College votes was delayed after protesters breached security at the Capitol, but Romney says their mission will not be canceled.

“We must not be intimidated or prevented from fulfilling our constitutional duty. We must continue with the count of electoral college votes. In light of today’s sad circumstances, I ask my colleagues: Do we weigh our own political fortunes more heavily than we weigh the strength of our Republic, the strength of our democracy, and the cause of freedom? What is the weight of personal acclaim compared to the weight of conscience?

The Utah delegation was in Washington today, and some in the Senate chambers, when the order was given to evacuate to safety after protesters breached security and entered the building.

Newly-elected Rep. Burgess Owens, who was called a “star” by Trump and was one of two Utah congressman to say they would challenge the results of the Electoral College votes, reacted to the violence on Twitter.

“My team and I are safe and beyond grateful for the service of Capitol Police,” wrote Owens. “I am deeply saddened by what is happening right now. Americans are better than this. Senseless violence is NEVER okay. We have to do better.”

Rep. Chris Stewart, who also promised to challenge the Electoral College votes that would confirm Joe Biden as president, also spoke out on social media.

“Protesters who are breaking windows, threatening violence, and accosting police are behaving inexcusably. It is un-American. This must stop now!” tweeted Stewart.

In a live interview with FOX 13, Rep. John Curtis said he was safe, but did not release where he was at the time due to security concerns.

“I think the most troubling thing was that the Capitol was breached,” said Curtis. “We all operate under this sense of security that now seems a little bit false.”

Curtis previously joined Sen. Mitt Romney is declaring that he would not contest the election.

While not naming Trump, Curtis seemed to insinuate that the president’s continued anger and false allegations may have sparked the violence in Washington, DC.

“There’s a great deal of frustration that tempers were allowed to escalate like this, that they were actually encouraged. It’s not how we do things in the United States of America.” said Curtis.

“This is not America today. This does not represent us. People from all walks, no matter how you feel about the president should push back on this and let everybody know that this is not acceptable.”

In a tweet posted in the afternoon, Utah senior Senator Mike Lee assured everyone that he and his staff were safe, while also calling out the protesters.

“The violence at the United States Capitol is completely unacceptable. It is time for the protesters to disperse.” wrote Lee.

In a video statement posted on Twitter, Governor Spencer Cox encouraged Utahns to participate in peaceful protests and condemned violence happening around the Nation.

“To any of you out there who are considering joining those protests I ask you to please do so but please do so in the right way. To do so loud to do so proud but to do so in a respectful manner and by no means resort to violence or property destruction.”

Cox also emphasized his belief that now is the time for Utah to set an example for the rest of the country.

“I’m calling on all of you to speak out to speak up and to let your family, your friends, your neighbors know this is unacceptable. We are better than this in Utah, we are better than this in America.”

Earlier Wednesday, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes called the protests “unacceptable,” and said there was no place for violence in politics.

“I condemn, in the strongest terms, the acts of violence at our nation’s Capital Building today. I pray for the safety of law enforcement working to keep order, for legislators of all parties as well as other civilians who are protesting peacefully. There is no place for violence in our political discourse, even over the most serious issues and disagreements. We are a nation of laws. This is not how Conservatives and Republicans behave. This is absolutely unacceptable,” wrote Reyes.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson also issued a written statement, adding that she is “pleased” congress decided to move forward with the counting of the electoral college Wednesday night.

“For five years I worked in the United States Capitol and traversed the same hallways and staircases that today were overrun by rioters and extremists. The building itself is a powerful and historic symbol of unity and the resilience of our nation. For generations, we have fought to preserve the foundational tenets of our democracy, literally within the walls of a building that today was breached by violent and disgraceful means. I am both angry and sad thinking of the congressional staff who honor that building and endeavor to preserve our institutions each day. It is time we live up to the promise of our founding, to create “a more perfect union.” I am pleased Congress has decided to press on tonight and am hopeful that we will restore civility and honor in the days to come and restore faith in our institutions, our government, and the rule of law.”

In a Facebook post, Utah State Auditor John Dougall called President Trump “seditious and treasonous.”

“My duty is to defend the US Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic, not to defend any specific individual. Trump is seditious and treasonous. He needs to resign or be officially removed from office. Let there be no doubt of my opinion,” Dougall wrote.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is set to testify before the House Judiciary Committee this month.

Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., said on “Fox News Sunday” that May 15 had been fixed for Mueller to appear before the committee.

“A tentative date has been set for May 15 and we hope the special counsel will appear,” Cicilline said. “We think the American people have a right to hear directly from him.”

The announcement comes after intense debate among Democrats about Mueller’s report, which they argue shows evidence of obstruction of justice.

Attorney General William Barr testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee last Wednesday but did not appear before the House Judiciary Committee the following day. Barr cited unreasonable terms placed on him by House leaders, including Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., who wanted counsels for both Democrats and Republicans to have the opportunity to question him.

Although the date is “tentative,” Cicilline said he expects Mueller, who spent 22 months investigating President Trump’s alleged ties to Russia, to appear.

“The White House has so far indicated they would not interfere with Mr. Mueller’s attempts to testify,” the congressman said Sunday.

This would be the first time Mueller testified before Congress since the release of his 448-page report last month.

The Biden administration is beginning to distribute expanded child tax credit payments, giving parents on average $423 this month, with payments continuing through the end of the year.

President Joe Biden increased the size of the tax credit as part of his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, as well as making it fully available to families without any tax obligations. The benefit is set to expire after a year, but Biden is pushing for it to be extended through 2025 and ultimately made permanent.

A closer look at how the payments work and who can receive them:

    HOW BIG ARE THE CREDITS?

The credit is $3,600 annually for children under age 6 and $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17. But six months of payments will be advanced on a monthly basis through the end of the year. This means eligible families will receive $300 monthly for each child under 6 and $250 per child older than that.

This is a change from last year, when the credit totaled $2,000 per child. Families who did not owe the government income taxes were also unable to claim the credit, a restriction that Biden and Congress lifted.

ARE THERE LIMITS ON WHO CAN QUALIFY?

The payments begin to phase out at incomes of $75,000 for individuals, $112,500 for heads of household and $150,000 for married couples. Higher-income families with incomes of $200,000 for individuals and $400,000 for married couples can still receive the previous $2,000 credit.

    HOW CAN YOU APPLY?

If you filed taxes and the IRS already has your bank account information, the payments should be deposited directly into your account on the 15th of each month. The Treasury Department estimates that 35.2 million families will receive payments in July. But even if you haven’t filed taxes in 2019 or 2020, you might still be eligible for the credit and can apply here: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/child-tax-credit-non-filer-sign-up-tool.

    WHY ARE THE PAYMENTS MONTHLY

Advocates say the monthly payments can help smooth out an impoverished family’s income, making it easier for them to budget and less dependent on high-interest lenders.

CAN THE MONTHLY PAYMENTS BE STOPPED?

Yes. Some people are used to the child tax credit enabling them to get a refund on their taxes. They might not want the monthly advance and about 1 million people have opted out, according to administration officials. People can unenroll here: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/child-tax-credit-update-portal.
