São Paulo – The Brazilian beachwear industry will seek more market abroad with a new concept, “Fashion Beyond Summer”. The strategy was launched two weeks ago in Miami, United States, and the objective is to associate Brazilian-made bikinis, swimming trunks, swimming suits and the like not only with the Brazilian lifestyle of happiness, beautiful beaches and sceneries, but also with production quality.

Press release

Beachwear had a temporary store in Miami

“The finishing, the technology used, the innovative cut, the prints, the sophisticated materials used, the colour palette,” says the project manager of Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), Isabel Fontoura, about the attributes of the beachwear the initiative wants to advertise.

The Apex is backing the “Fashion Beyond Summer” alongside the Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association (Abit) and the Brazilian Designers Association (Abest).During the World Cup 2014, which took place in Brazil in June and July, the agency launched and advertised the “Brazil Beyond” concept, aimed at Brazilian production as a whole. The action in Miami, with a specific focus on beachwear, was the first carried out abroad after the Cup. Throughout this year, ten international events will highlight other segments of the Brazilian industry.

Miami was not randomly chosen for the launch of “Fashion Beyond Summer”. The United States are currently the largest importers of Brazilian beachwear, according to Fontoura. The event in which the concept was introduced was held at the Soho Beach House hotel and gathered trendsetters, journalists, buyers, local and Brazilian companies. It showed Brazilian fashion among other kinds of art, such as music and gastronomy, with a cocktail and a show by the Brazilian band Saulo Duarte e a Unidade, among other performances.

As part of the initiative, Brazilian companies took part in two fairs in Miami soon after the event, the Cabana and the Miami Swim Week. The former is an exclusive trade show, featuring at most 80 brands from all over the world. The program also endorsed a parade by three Brazilian companies at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim. A temporary store was set at the Soho Beach House’s rooftop terrace for four days, so attendees could see Brazilian beachwear up close.

The “Fashion Beyond Summer” concept will go on being advertised, according to Fontoura. The Apex is starting to draft plans with the Abit and Abest for the Paris Fashion Week, which will be held in the second half of the year. In this case, however, the conception will be broader, as it will have not only beach products, but fashion in general.

All actions are designed to increase exports. The Apex project manager claims that Brazilian fashion is already internationally renowned, but there is room for improvement. “Positioning is key,” claims Fontoura. Last year, Brazil exported US$ 10 million in beachwear and the main markets were the United States, France and Portugal.

The Arab countries are not among the main destinations of the segment, but according to the Apex project manager, they have a lot of potential. She mentions some specific products which may find a market in the region, such as the kaftans and cover ups (a long loose tunic of light fabric) which may be worn over the bikini. Fontoura recalls that the Arab importers usually attend the Paris Fashion Week, which is visited by buyers from all over the world, and Brazil will also participate in it.

The two main destinations of Brazilian exports in the Arab world, according to the Apex-Brasil, are the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon. Last year the country exported US$ 216,000 to the Emirates and US$ 58,000 to Lebanon. Brands such as Blue Man, Desiree Nercessian, Despi, Feriado Nacional, Vix, Lenny, Salinas and Clube Bossa export to the region.

National Security Advisor John Bolton announced that the U.S. is sending the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group and a bomber task force to the Middle East.

Iran’s president announced on Wednesday that the nation would stop complying with some parts of the nuclear accord it signed with world powers as President Donald Trump’s administration has ratcheted up economic and military pressure on Tehran.

Hassan Rouhani said his country would reduce its compliance with the 2015 deal. The declaration came on the one-year anniversary of Trump’s complete withdrawal from an agreement that limited Iran’s nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.

Rouhani said Iran will start keeping excess uranium and “heavy water” from its nuclear program inside the country – as opposed to selling it internationally – in a move that effectively amounts to a partial breach of the deal. He also set a 60-day deadline for new terms to its nuclear accord, absent the U.S., with Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia and the European Union or threatened to resume higher uranium enrichment.

War drums: Pentagon adds B-52s to aircraft carrier rushing to Middle East

“We felt that the nuclear deal needs a surgery and the painkiller pills of the last year have been ineffective,” Rouhani said in a nationally televised address.

“This surgery is for saving the deal, not destroying it.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who was in Moscow, tweeted: “After a year of patience, Iran stops measures that (the) U.S. has made impossible to continue.” Zarif warned world powers have “a narrowing window to reverse this.”

The announcement came as the White House has appeared to inch closer toward a military confrontation with Iran than at any other time during Trump’s presidency. The Pentagon has redirected aircraft bombers and a carrier strike group to the Middle East after claiming it intercepted intelligence indicating that Iran or its proxies in the region might be preparing attacks on American military troops and facilities.

Last month, Trump designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp, an elite wing of the nation’s military that is also a broad pillar of the state and whose tentacles extend to a large role in economic, political and social affairs, a terrorist organization.

Exclusive:Iran open to talks with U.S. if Trump changes approach to nuclear deal

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took an unscheduled trip to Iraq on Tuesday where he told reporters that he met with Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and briefed Iraqi officials on the “increased threat stream that we had seen” from Iranian forces.

“We talked to them about the importance of Iraq ensuring that it’s able to adequately protect Americans in their country,” Pompeo said.

“I think everyone will look at the Iranian decision and have to make their own assessment about how much increased risk there is,” he added.

There are about 5,000 U.S. troops serving in Iraq. After pulling out of the nuclear deal, the Trump administration has renewed crippling economic sanctions on Iran that have isolated the nation economically and harmed its capacity to export oil.

Inside Iran: America’s contentious history in Iran leads to anger and weariness

America’s top diplomat is due to give an address later Wednesday in London where the topic of rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran is likely to come up again. There was no immediate response from the White House to Rouhani’s announcement.

Former President Barack Obama, whose administration negotiated the nuclear deal, sought to block Iran’s progress toward nuclear weapons through diplomacy. The Trump administration, by contrast, has not been shy in its preference for a campaign of “maximum pressure” on Iran and has cut off all contact with the regime as its attempts to bring its oil revenues down to zero through increasingly hard-hitting sanctions.

European signatories to the nuclear accord have meanwhile attempted to stay in the nuclear agreement by establishing a financial mechanism, known as INSTEX, intended to help them circumvent U.S. sanctions, but it has yet not been fully implemented.

While the Pentagon and White House officials have insisted they are not seeking a war with Iran, political scientists and Iran-watchers have expressed concern that the Trump administration’s growing, aggressive posture toward Tehran is a reflection of Pompeo’s and National Security Adviser John Bolton’s long-harbored dislike of the country.

“The (nuclear deal) is doing what it was designed to do: preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. As such, the deal is too important to be allowed to die,” the directors of 18 foreign affairs think tanks and research institutes wrote in a joint letter published Wednesday as Iran signaled that the accord’s total collapse is possible.

“I’m deeply worried that the Trump administration is leading us toward an unnecessary war with Iran,” said Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., in a statement late Tuesday.

“Let me make one thing clear: The Trump administration has no legal authority to start a war against Iran without the consent of Congress.”

HOUSTON – Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is under scrutiny Thursday after he blamed the rise of COVID-19 in Texas on Black people who are not vaccinated in the state and Democrats.

In an interview with host Laura Ingraham of Fox News show “The Ingraham Angle,” Patrick said this: “The COVID is spreading, particularly — most of the numbers are with the unvaccinated, and the Democrats like to blame Republicans on that.”

“Well, the biggest group in most states are African Americans who have not been vaccinated,” he continued. “The last time I checked over 90 percent of them vote for Democrats in their major cities and major counties, so it’s up to the Democrats to get, just as that it’s up to Republicans, to try to get as many people vaccinated.”

“But we respect the fact that if people don’t want to the vaccination, we’re not going to force it on them, that’s their individual right. But in terms of criticizing the Republicans for this, we’re encouraging those who want to take it to take it, but they’re doing nothing for the African American community that has a significant, high number of unvaccinated people, so they need to address that.”

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner personally signed a tweet in response to Patrick’s statement saying: “The Lt. Governor’s statements are offensive and should not be ignored. st”

The Texas Tribune reports there are an estimated 5.6 million white people who are eligible and unvaccinated, while the same figure is 1.9 million for Black people, who make up a far smaller part of the overall population. The figure is 4.9 million for Hispanic people, whose population is now nearly as large as the non-Hispanic white population in Texas.

The full vaccination rate among Black people in Texas is 29%, lower than the rates for Asian, Hispanic and white Texans.

Texas has reported race and ethnicity data for about 82% of people who are fully vaccinated.

The Tribune reported further: “Also despite Patrick’s claims, vaccine hesitancy is higher among Republicans than it is among Black people in Texas, according to a June poll from the Texas Tribune and the University of Texas at Austin. Thirty-eight percent of Republicans said they would not get a vaccine as soon as it is available to them, while 18% of Black people said the same.”

Dr. Jorge A. Caballero, a Stanford clinical clinical instructor in anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine, railed against Patrick on Twitter, using U.S. Census data, Kaiser Family Foundation statistics and Texas Department of State Health Services data.

As the Biden administration has juggled crises in Afghanistan, the southern border and the national supply chain, key officials, including the president himself, have declined to make visibility a top priority.

The media wasn’t notified until two months later that Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg had taken a parental leave in mid-August to care for his newborn twins. Buttigieg’s office told Politico on Thursday that he was “mostly offline” for an entire month “except for major agency decisions” and that his activities had been ramping up in recent weeks.

WHITE HOUSE IN CHAOS STRUGGLES TO KEEP BIDEN ON TIME

Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, best known for his 2020 run for the presidency, did not appoint an interim secretary during his leave, even while supply chain disruptions across the country have left shelves empty ahead of the crucial holiday shopping period. He told CNN on Sunday that the disruptions are expected to continue until next year.

“Pete Buttigieg was completely unqualified to serve as Secretary of Transportation,” Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., tweeted Monday. “Now, Pete is absent during a transportation crisis that is hurting working-class Americans.”

“PETE BUTTIGIEG has been MIA,” Politico declared Thursday.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki defended Buttigieg on Twitter after Democrats bristled at the “MIA” label.

“Also proud to work in an Administration that is fighting to make paid leave a reality for everyone, and with people like @SecretaryPete who are role models on the importance of paid leave for new parents,” Psaki tweeted Friday.

Buttigieg isn’t the only Cabinet member to face criticism for his absence.

Earlier this month, Vice President Kamala Harris flew to Palm Springs, a resort town about 107 miles east of Los Angeles, for a “private family matter,” officials said. Harris spent one night on Oct. 1 at an undisclosed location in Palm Springs and no other reason was given for the trip.

Since March, when Biden put her in charge of addressing the root causes of the border crisis, Harris has faced steady criticism from Republicans for not visiting the border region – save for a brief trip to El Paso, Texas, in June – despite her taking several trips to her home state of California. Days after her Palm Springs trip, Harris visited New Jersey instead of accompanying Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland for high-level security talks in Mexico City.

On Sept. 17, the same day that U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, commander of U.S. Central Command, told reporters that an Aug. 29 drone strike targeting ISIS actually killed 10 civilians in Afghanistan, not terrorists, Biden and first lady Jill took a trip to Rehoboth, Delaware, for a quiet weekend of church service and bike rides.

The president was already under fire for his handling of the chaotic U.S. military evacuation from the country, during which a suicide bombing attack in Kabul left 13 U.S. service members dead. Biden has repeatedly defended his plan to withdraw troops from the country, while as many as a hundred U.S. citizens and tens of thousands of Afghan allies and Afghans vulnerable to Taliban reprisal remain stranded. The president largely avoided cameras during the initial drawdown, watching the Aug. 15 fall of Kabul unfold from the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken was vacationing in the Hamptons just before the fall of Kabul on Aug. 15, when Taliban insurgents completed their retaking of the country 20 years after their ouster.

According to a detailed timeline of the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul compiled by The Washington Post, the actions by U.S. officials in the days leading up to the Aug. 15 collapse suggested “no immediate cause for alarm,” with many of them “surrendering to the customary rhythms of Washington in August.”

Blinken, like other U.S. officials, had to be called back from his vacation once things started rapidly deteriorating in Afghanistan, the report said.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki had an “out of the office” email message for one week starting the same day Kabul collapsed, but returned to the White House the next day.

Harris, who previously said she had a key role in Biden’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, also managed to stay relatively silent on the crisis, instead embarking on her first official visit to Southeast Asia in an unrelated trip.

Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar is facing backlash after her speech at a Muslim rights group’s event in which she described the September 11, 2001 terror attacks as “some people did something.”

Omar spoke at a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) fundraiser last month, where she called upon other Muslim Americans to “make people uncomfortable” with their activism and presence in the society and criticized the Jewish state.

REP. ILHAN OMAR PROBED FOR ALLEGEDLY SPENDING $6,000 OF CAMPAIGN FUNDS ON DIVORCE ATTORNEY, PERSONAL TRAVEL

But another part of the speech surfaced on social media earlier this week, in which Omar described the terror attacks perpetrated by al Qaeda.

“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” Omar said at the event.

The comments from the Minnesota freshman Democrat, still reeling from a number of anti-Semitic controversies, prompted Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw to slam Omar for her description of the terror attacks.

“First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as ‘some people who did something,’” Crenshaw wrote in a tweet. “Unbelievable.”

NETANYAHU, ILHAN OMAR SPAR OVER ROLE OF AIPAC’S POLITICAL MONEY: ‘IT’S NOT ABOUT THE BENJAMINS’

Others have also jumped on to criticize Omar’s language, urging Democrats to condemn her remarks about the largest terror attack on U.S. soil that left nearly 3,000 people dead.

“9/11 terrorists & the terror attacks they conducted are described as simply ‘some people did something’? Every Democrat should be asked by the media if they disavow @IlhanMN’s statements. Every one of them,” tweeted Andrew Pollack, father of a Parkland high school shooting victim.

“Ilhan Omar isn’t just anti-Semitic – she’s anti-American. Nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives to Islamic terrorists on 9/11, yet Omar diminishes it as: ‘Some people did something.’ Democrat leaders need to condemn her brazen display of disrespect,” said GOP chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.

CAIR has been infamously listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in funding of Hamas, stemming from the case against the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development which led to millions of charitable dollars getting funneled to the Palestinian terrorist organization.

Omar’s speech at CAIR in Southern California drew hundreds of protesters waving Israeli flags and denouncing the congresswoman’s comments about Israel that were perceived as anti-Semitic.

She first came under fire for tweeting in 2012 that “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.”

She then drew bipartisan uproar in February after she suggested politicians in the U.S. were bought by AIPAC, a non-partisan organization that seeks to foster the relationship between the U.S. and Israel.

Omar then reignited the controversy, saying groups supportive of Israel were pushing members of Congress to have “allegiance to a foreign country,” echoing the anti-Semitic trope of dual loyalty.

São Paulo – Over 30 companies have expressed interest in the auction for concession of Highway SP-099 (Tamoios Highway), in the state of São Paulo. The tender is scheduled to take place in July at the latest. According to the São Paulo State Transport Agency (Artesp), from Friday (Feb 28), when the call for tender for the public-private partnership (PPP) for the Nova Tamoios (New Tamoios) was made public, until Tuesday (1st), over 30 companies have collected the documentation to bid for the tender.

The winner will carry out duplication works in the highway’s mountain stretch, renovation in the flat stretch, and manage the highway for the next 30 years. Nearly R$ 4 billion (US$ 1.76 billion) should be invested during the period. In the first five years, R$ 2.9 billion (US$ 1.2 billion) will be invested. Brazilian and foreign companies, complementary social security companies and investment funds are eligible.

According to the Artesp special projects advisor Isadora Cohen, the strong demand for information on the auction was a “pleasant surprise,” however the Artesp was already anticipating much interest in the highway’s concession. “We had realized during our road shows that there was widespread interest from the market,” Cohen told ANBA this Wednesday (2nd).

Similar to other tenders floated in the state of São Paulo, foreign companies will be eligible for the “Nova Tamoios” auction. This was the case with the Anchieta-Imigrantes system auctions, which connects the city of São Paulo and the southern coast of the state; the Anhanguera-Bandeirantes system auctions, connecting the capital to the countryside, and the auctions of the Rodoanel ring road, around the Greater Metropolitan Area of São Paulo, among others.

“From our past experiences we have ascertained that the participation [of foreign enterprises] is not significant yet,” said Cohen. According to her, however, Tamoios has a strong potential for technology usage, and requires “robust” investment. “It may attract people from overseas,” he added.

The concession provides for duplication of the mountain portion comprehended between kilometres 60.48 and 82, and the operation, maintenance and conservation of the stretch between kilometres 11.5 an d 83.4, as well as roundabouts in Caraguatatuba and São Sebastião, northern coast cities to which the traffic from the capital and the Paraíba valley flows via the highway. Duplication of the mountain stretch will span approximately 21.5 kilometres, of which 12.7 will be tunnels. The road will include the longest tunnel in Brazil, at 3.675 kilometres. The flatland stretch between kilometres 11.5 and 60.48, has been duplicated and was delivered in January this year.

The concession scheme for this project is the sponsored concession. Under this scheme, the toll charged from users will not suffice to repay the investment made by the operator. Therefore, the state will have to make annual payments so the winning company does not incur losses, and so the toll is not too high. The government of São Paulo will transfer a maximum of R$ 156.8 million per year to the winning company. The bid that demands the lowest payment from the state government will win the auction.

There will be toll booth plazas at kilometres 15.7 and 56.6 of the flatland stretch, and another one in the Caraguatatuba roundabout. The toll will be R$ 0.077 per kilometre in single-lane stretches, and R$ 0.108 in double-lane portions. It will be charged starting on the contract’s second year. Interested parties are required to provide proof of former management and operation of highways with an average daily traffic of 8,000 vehicles per hour, among other requirements.

International companies willing to bid are not required to have a Brazilian partner, and may bid solo, as long as they have a legal representative in Brazil. If they decide on having a local partner or entering into a consortium, however, the venture’s leader must be the Brazilian partner.

As per the schedule, interested parties will have 45 days as of February 28 to peruse the call for tender. On May 14th, all bidders will be required to submit envelopes containing registration documents, bid bonds, licensing documents, construction work methods, commercial proposal, and business plan. They will also need to prove their capacity to make the investment and complete the works.

The bid envelopes will only be opened once the Artesp has reviewed the other envelopes, which should take place in June and July this year, after which the winner should be announced. The signing of the concession contract is scheduled for September, and works should start in the last two months of 2014.

The confrontation between authorities and a man who pulled up next to the Library of Congress claiming to have a bomb in his truck ended with his surrender on Thursday afternoon.

It took hours of negotiations and at least three law enforcement agencies — the U.S. Capitol Police, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — to persuade Floyd Ray Roseberry to stop ranting about a “revolution” and to turn himself over to authorities.

But the ease with which Roseberry gained such close access to the sidewalk next to the Library of Congress’ Thomas Jefferson building, which is itself very near the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court, raises new questions about the security of nation’s most important symbols of democracy just seven months after the rioting and deadly violence of the Jan. 6 insurrection.

More attacks are probably inevitable

Malcolm Nance, a former Naval intelligence and counterterrorism officer, says Roseberry would never have gotten close to the Capitol complex had authorities moved to erect a permanent fence around the perimeter, as it has been debating for years.

“It should have happened long ago,” Nance tells NPR. He says it shouldn’t be a question of if a permanent barrier should be built, but when.

There was a protective fence built around the Capitol after the siege, but it was taken down last month. An outer perimeter fence was removed in March. Capitol Police explained that it would monitor intelligence for any threats to the complex and that the temporary fence could be reinstalled if needed.

Nance disagrees with that approach. Based on his ongoing monitoring of far-right radicalized groups throughout the country, he believes more bomb threats and other violence targeting symbolic institutions are inevitable.

There is a looming “insurgency where this is going to happen a lot only, there’s a lot of potential for it not to be threats,” he says.

He maintains that the only way to effectively protect lawmakers and civil servants in and around the Capitol complex is to use the same type of defensive military tactics the U.S. applies in fighting terrorism around the world.

“We don’t need a bomb blast to damage the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress and the U.S. Capitol building,” he says, adding that an appropriate “blast radius is about 680 yards.”

Congress approved a $2.1 billion package to boost security

Late last month, Congress approved a $2.1 billion package to improve member security and harden the Capitol’s security.

Roughly $950 million of that will be directed toward installing new security measures for members of Congress and fortifying the Capitol. That could include the construction of a retractable or mobile fencing system, hardening of doors and windows, the installation of new security screening vestibules and cameras.

It also allocates about $3.3 million for the Capitol Police intelligence division and $5 million for equipment, and another $18 million to provide body cameras to officers, specialized training, and new physical barriers.

Adding barriers would “rip the heart out of the city”

Daniel Schuman is policy director of Demand Progress, where he monitors the Capitol Police for the advocacy organization. He said further militarizing what should be public spaces and boosting staffing are the wrong solutions for addressing the growing domestic terrorism problem.

Schuman notes Capitol Police has a budget of a half-billion dollars, but it has no obligation to disclose how it spends that money or uses existing equipment.

“What Jan. 6 demonstrated was that a lot of these things aren’t being deployed very well,” he told NPR.

He opposes any plan that may include a 10-foot-high fence. “It would rip the heart out of the city.”

“It’s a terrible symbol,” he adds.

But a more substantive downside is the divide it creates between citizens and their representatives.

“Every time you add an additional layer between people and the people that represent them, you create further distance. It becomes harder for members of Congress and their staff to hear from folks that the laws affect.”

Schuman notes that Roseberry, a pro-Trump supporter who was livestreaming himself on Facebook while threatening to detonate a bomb outside of the Library of Congress, called himself a “patriot” and demanded that Democrats step down.

“In this crisis of democratic legitimacy,” Schuman said, “we don’t want to take the most democratic institution and make it even harder to interact with.”

JERUSALEM — An Israeli hospital on Monday said preliminary research indicates a fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine provides only limited defense against the omicron variant that is raging around the world.

Sheba Hospital last month began administering a fourth vaccine to more than 270 medical workers — 154 who received a Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine and 120 others who received Moderna’s. All had previously been vaccinated three times with the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine.

The clinical trial found that both groups showed increases in antibodies “slightly higher” than following the third vaccine last year. But it said the increased antibodies did not prevent the spread of omicron.

“Despite increased antibody levels, the fourth vaccine only offers a partial defense against the virus,” said Dr. Gili Regev-Yochay, director of the hospital’s infection disease unit. “The vaccines, which were more effective against previous variants, offer less protection versus omicron.”

The preliminary results raised questions about Israel’s decision to offer a second booster shot — and fourth overall — to its over-60 population. The government says over 500,000 people have received the second booster in recent weeks.

Dr. Nahman Ash, director of Israel’s Health Ministry, said the research did not mean the fourth vaccine effort was a mistake. “It returns the level of antibodies to what it was at the beginning of the third booster. That has great importance, especially among the older population,” he told Channel 13 TV.

But he said the research would be taken into account as authorities debate whether to expand the additional booster campaign to the broader population.

Israel was one of the first countries last year to widely vaccinate its population and last summer became the first to offer a booster shot. The latest booster campaign for older Israelis also is believed to be the first of its kind in the world.

Israel’s aggressive vaccination efforts have not been able to stop an omicron outbreak in recent weeks. The variant has caused record-setting infection levels and sent a growing number of people to the hospital, though the numbers of seriously ill remain below previous waves.

It has also forced large numbers of Israelis into quarantine, straining schools and businesses.

Omicron is already dominant in many countries and can also infect those who have been vaccinated or had previously been infected by prior versions of the virus. Early studies, however, show it is less likely to cause severe illness than the previous delta variant. Vaccination and a booster still offer strong protection from serious illness, hospitalization and death.

On Tuesday, the Israeli government said it was shortening the mandatory quarantine period from seven days to five days in order to help keep the economy running.

“This decision will enable us to continue safeguarding public health on the one hand and to keep the economy going at this time on the other, even though it is difficult, so that we can get through this wave safely,” said Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

Incredible GoPro footage takes you inside the gunfire-heavy raid that ended drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s six months on the run.

The video, obtained from Mexican authorities, looks as if it’s from an action movie. The camera follows the armed men as they storm the house, unleash grenades and bullets, and search room to room.

The Friday raid was called “Operation Black Swan,” according to the Mexican show “Primero Noticias.” Authorities decided to launch the raid Thursday after they got a tip about where Guzman was sleeping, the show reported.

Seventeen elite unit Mexican Marines launched their assault on the house in the city of Los Mochis at 4:40 a.m., “Primero Noticias” said.

They were met by about one dozen well-armed guards inside who were prepared for a fight, the show said.

The Marines moved from room to room, clearing the house. Upstairs they found two men in one room and found two women on the floor of a bathroom. All were captured, “Primero Noticias” said.

After 15 minutes, the Marines controlled the entire house, according to “Primero Noticias.”

In the end, five guards were killed and two men and two women were detained. One of the women was the same cook Guzman had with him when he was detained a couple years ago, according to “Primero Noticias.”

Eventually the marines determined that the only bedroom on the first floor was Guzman’s and they began pounding on the walls and moving furniture, finding hidden doors, the show said.

His room had a king-sized bed, bags from fashionable clothing stores, bread and cookie wrappers, and medicine including injectable testosterone, syringes, antibiotics and cough syrups, the show said. The two-story house had four bedrooms and five bathrooms. There were flat-screen TVs and Internet connection throughout the house, according to “Primero Noticias.”

The Marines eventually found a hidden passageway behind a mirror, with a handle hidden in the light fixture. The handle opened a secret door, leading down into the escape tunnel, the show explained.

The escape tunnel was fully lit and led to an access door for the city sewage system, “Primero Noticias” said, adding that Guzman had at least a 20-minute head start on the Marines.

The address where Guzman was captured had been monitored for a month, Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez has said. According to Gomez, Guzman and his lieutenant escaped through that drainage system.

“Primero Noticias” said it obtained surveillance footage showing Guzman and his lieutenant emerging from the manhole cover, where they then stole two cars to flee, the show said.

Guzman was finally caught when he and the lieutenant were stopped on a highway by Mexican Federal Police, the show said.

Authorities took them to a motel to wait for reinforcement. The men were then taken to Los Mochis airport and transfered to Mexico City.

Guzman is now back in prison as his lawyers fight his extradition to the U.S.

The drug kingpin escaped from the Altiplano prison near Mexico City on July 11, launching an active manhunt. When guards realized that he was missing from his cell, they found a ventilated tunnel and exit had been constructed in the bathtub inside Guzman’s cell. The tunnel extended for about a mile underground and featured an adapted motorcycle on rails that officials believe was used to transport the tools used to create the tunnel, Monte Alejandro Rubido, the head of the Mexican national security commission, said in July.

Guzman had been sent there after he was arrested in February 2014. He spent more than 10 years on the run after escaping from a different prison in 2001. It’s unclear exactly how he had escaped, but he did receive help from prison guards who were prosecuted and convicted.

Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, was once described by the U.S. Treasury as “the most powerful drug trafficker in the world.” The Sinaloa cartel allegedly uses elaborate tunnels for drug trafficking and has been estimated to be responsible for 25 percent of all illegal drugs that enter the U.S. through Mexico.

MSNBC’s viewership last week propelled the network to its first No. 1 cable news network “sales day” rating in 18 years, NBCUniversal announced.

The network averaged 1.56 million total viewers between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m. in the Dec. 17-21 business week — ahead of Fox News’ 1.54 million and CNN’s 975,000.

Story Continued Below

It was the first time in three presidencies that MSNBC topped Fox News on that metric. The most recent week MSNBC beat Fox News there was Nov. 6, 2000, when former President George W. Bush was first elected.

MSNBC also beat Fox News in the crucial demographic of 25- to 54-year-olds last week — for the first time since Oct. 8, 2001, the network said, citing Nielsen data.

The cable network, which media observers often portray as the liberal counterpart to the conservative Fox News, also finished ahead of its two main competitors in prime time for the fourth consecutive week.

And it boasted the most-watched program on cable news last week, “The Rachel Maddow Show,” which drew an average of 3.21 million viewers.

Correction: An earlier version of this story inaccurately described the time period in which MSNBC beat Fox News in ratings. It was the “sales day” rating for Dec. 17-21, which covers the hours between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article misstated the time frame in which MSNBC beat its competitors last week. It was 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Key developments in the global coronavirus outbreak today include:

Known cases surpass three quarters of a million

According to Johns Hopkins University, at least 777,286 people around the world are known to have been infected since the outbreak began, though the true figure is likely to be higher. The institution says 37,140 people have died and 164,435 have recovered.

France suffers its worst daily death toll

French health authorities report 418 new deaths, taking the total in the country to 3,024. It has become the fourth nation to cross the 3,000 fatalities threshold after China, Italy and Spain.

The daily government tally only accounts for those dying in hospital but authorities say they will very soon be able to compile data on deaths in retirement homes, which is likely to result in a big increase in registered fatalities.

Israeli prime minister tests negative

Benjamin Netanyahu and his key advisers isolated themselves after one of the prime minister’s aides tested positive for the coronavirus. Later, it was confirmed that Netanyahu had tested negative, though his spokesman said he would remain quarantined until further instructions were issued by the Israeli ministry of health.

Italians face lockdown extension despite slowing growth in cases

The lockdown imposed on Italians is being extended at least until Easter, health minister Roberto Speranza says. Italy has been under lockdown for three weeks and the restrictions were due to end on Friday.

Earlier, it was revealed that the number of new cases rose by just 4,050 on Monday; the lowest nominal increase since 17 March.

UK police to get lockdown guidelines

New guidance is being drawn up warning police forces not to overreach their lockdown enforcement powers after some were criticised for deploying controversial tactics in recent days.

Study reveals increased risks from middle age onwards

The first comprehensive study of Covid-19 deaths and hospital admissions in mainland China reveals the increase in risk for patients once they reach middle age. The analysis finds that, while the average death rate for confirmed cases is 1.38%, the rate rises sharply with age – from 0.0016% in the under 10s, to 7.8% for those in their 80s and over.

Tasmania records its second death

Peter Gutwein, the Tasmanian premier, says a man died overnight, bringing the state’s total to two. “This is … two deaths too many, and it serves as a warning to us all that these are going to be tough and difficult times and we must all do our part to keep Tasmania safe,” he said. The new deaths bring Australia’s death toll to 19.

Covid-19 cluster in Bondi

There are signs of community transmission in Waverley and Bondi in New South Wales in Australia, according to the state’s premier Gladys Berejiklian. She says it is too early to say NSW is beating the curve and reduce any restrictions. “Do not leave your home unless you absolutely have to,” she tells residents.

US ‘faces hundreds of thousands of deaths’

As many as 200,000 people in the US may die even if Washington plays its response to the outbreak “almost perfectly”, according Dr Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White House coronavirus taskforce.

“If we do things together well, almost perfectly, we could get in the range of 100,000 to 200,000 fatalities,” she told NBC News’ Today. We don’t even want to see that … the best-case scenario would be 100% of Americans doing precisely what is required, but we’re not sure … that all of America is responding in a uniform way to protect one another.”

Rescue flights to repatriate Britons

Tens of thousands of people stranded abroad will be flown back to the UK by airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Titan Airways on chartered planes as part of a partnership between the government and private enterprise announced by the foreign secretary, Dominic Raab.
