Y los vecinos de un sector de Ureña –uno de los seis municipios en estado de excepción en la frontera venezolana con Colombia, cerrada hace una semana– salieron de sus negocios y sus casas en busca del origen del hedor.
Era una alcantarilla, por la que “rebosaba gasolina mezclada con desechos y ratas”, le dijeron varios de ellos a BBC Mundo.
Trancaron la calle con motos y cauchos.
“Teníamos miedo de que eso se prendiera, imagínese, con este calor es muy fácil”, dijo uno de los comerciantes de la calle.
Un viejo termómetro en su tienda marcaba los 31 grados centígrados.

Los bomberos destaparon la alcantarilla, pero un día después, cuando llegó BBC Mundo, el olor se mantenía; también esa inconfundible grasa multicolor que pintaba el agua que salía de la cloaca.
Los vecinos coinciden en que el origen de esa suerte de fuente de combustible era que la gente de los barrios “de arriba” estaba botando la gasolina por los inodoros, lavamanos y sifones de sus casas para deshacerse de ella.
“Toda mi casa huele a gasolina porque las cañerías están todas intoxicadas“, dijo, con acento colombiano, Yusnary Narváez, una habitante del sector.
A unas cuadras de la alcantarilla se veían decenas de recipientes para guardar gasolina –conocidos como pimpinas– que la gente al parecer botó después de regar el material inflamable.

“Y eso que la Guardia (Nacional) recogió como 200 pimpinas que habían botado ahí”, dijo Evaristo, un mecánico de la calle.
Acá el contrabando de combustible –que se compra en Venezuela a menos precio que un caramelo por litro y se vende en Colombia por cientos de veces más– es una forma de vida para cientos de personas.

Ahora las autoridades venezolanas, como parte de una polémica política para rehabilitar esta liada frontera, están allanando casas en busca de material de contrabando; no necesitan una orden judicial, porque el estado de excepción permite las inspecciones directas.
Y el miedo a la sanción, que puede traducirse en varios años de cárcel, llevó a la gente a botar sus reservas de combustible.
El negocio del contrabando
El contrabando de gasolina en la frontera es un negocio multimillonario.
Estudios y declaraciones de autoridades aduaneras de ambos países han dicho que incluso puede mover más dinero que el narcotráfico.
El precio de la gasolina en Venezuela, que cuenta con la inflación más alta del planeta, no ha sido aumentado desde 1996.
Y un aumento anterior, en 1989, fue en parte el detonante del estallido social conocido como el Caracazo, que dejó cientos de muertos.
Acá en Venezuela, el país de las reservas de petróleo más grandes del mundo, aumentar el precio del combustible es considerada una de las políticas más impopulares que un gobernante puede llevar a cabo.
Y aunque el gobierno de Nicolás Maduro dijo hace un año y medio que estudia aumentarla, el debate ha sido archivado en este año que terminará con elecciones legislativas el 6 de diciembre.
El Estado venezolano pierde US$12.500 millones al año por el subsidio de la gasolina, según cifras oficiales.
Al menos unos 200.000 barriles de petróleo, según el gobierno, salen por contrabando al día del país: un 10% de la producción diaria.

El cierre de la frontera, y el establecimiento del estado de excepción, busca en parte erradicar ese contrabando.
Aunque analistas venezolanos de oposición dicen que si los incentivos económicos se mantienen es imposible que este negocio se acabe.
Sin cola en gasolinera, pero cola en tiendas
Desde que la frontera fue cerrada hace una semana, las bombas de gasolina de este lado de la frontera, que solían acoger kilométricas filas, están vacías.
Ha sido el impacto económico del cierre fronterizo que más comentan los habitantes de la zona.
Según el gobierno, el cierre fronterizo ahorra 6.300 barriles de petróleo diarios: un 3% de los 200.000 que se contrabandean cada día.
Pero otro de los efectos de las medidas es que en los supermercados y tiendas de la zona han aparecido productos que antes se iban por el contrabando –desde harina de maíz precocida hasta leche– y los están vendiendo al precio regulado.
En las tiendas de repuestos para carros, por ejemplo, se ven largas filas de gente que espera comprar cauchos a precio regulado, que es decenas de veces menor al precio libre.
“Encontrarán la forma”
“En este momento el contrabando está parado”, me dijo un contrabandista en una lujosa oficina en uno de los municipios fronterizos.
“Pero tarde o temprano los grupos ilegales que se alían con las autoridades venezolanas encontrarán la forma de volver a activar el negocio, no lo dudo”, dijo.
Pocos habitantes del sector, que siempre ha sido de fuerte presencia militar, dudan de la participación de algunas autoridades en el contrabando.
El contrabandista dice algo que he escuchado mucho por acá: “Los militares y guardias incluso pagan para que les den trabajo en la zona”.
De hecho, el presidente Maduro dijo en un rueda de prensa esta semana que la “nueva frontera no solo implica confrontar las mafias, sino su capacidad para corromper instituciones, para comprar concejales, alcaldes”.
“Aunque (la corrupción) no es el problema principal”, añadió en referencia a la presencia paramilitar en la zona, que considera el origen de no solo el contrabando, sino de la escasez y la delincuencia en Venezuela.
De vuelta en los municipios fronterizos, un habitante de Ureña me muestra en su celular unas fotos que los vecinos han estado compartiendo.
Son imágenes de una explosión de gasolina que los habitantes de San Antonio, otro de estos municipios fronterizos, provocaron para deshacerse del combustible.
Y en los chats de los otros municipios fronterizos se reporta el mismo olor, el mismo miedo, el mismo riegue desesperado de combustible.

El Día del Café Peruano se celebra cada cuarto viernes del mes de agosto y es un homenaje que se hace a este producto bandera reconocido mundialmente por su alta calidad. Con motivo de esta celebración te explicaremos los beneficios de su consumo.
Sara Abu Sabbah, nutricionista y conductora de Siempre en Casa de RPP Noticias, indicó que hay más garantía de los beneficios del café cuando este es puro, es decir, el grano pasa por un proceso de tostado y molido.
Explicó que el café es un alimento de origen vegetal que contiene minerales, vitaminas y algunas propiedades similares a las frutas y verduras, aunque aclaró que no es necesariamente igual la concentración de nutrientes ni de calorías.
“El café tiene más de mil sustancias químicas, muchas de ellas con capacidad antioxidante, la mayoría tipo polifenoles, que tienen beneficios para la salud y que vienen siendo estudiados y comprobados”, señaló la doctora.
Pero, ¿cuántas tazas de café son las recomendables? La nutricionista Sara Abu Sabbah recordó que la Administración de Drogas y Alimentos de los Estados Unidos (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés) considera que de 3 a 4 tazas de café al día no tendrían por qué dañar la salud en un adulto sano.
No obstante, señaló que este consumo moderado de café no es aplicable para todas las personas, ya que la cafeína altera el sistema nervioso central y en algunas personas ansiosas o niños puede ser contraproducente.
De igual forma, dijo que no es aconsejable para gestantes, pacientes con hipertensión arterial o gastritis, pues a estos últimos les irrita la mucosa del estómago.
La experta en nutrición sí resaltó la propiedad estimulante de la cafeína para aquellas personas que tienen largas jornadas de trabajo o aquellas que requieren mejorar su nivel de concentración. Anotó que el efecto de este alcaloide ocurre cerca de 20 minutos después de haberla consumido.
Abu Sabbah también señaló que aunque el café puede dar la sensación de pérdida de fatiga y no va en contra de una prueba antidoping, no es sugerida para los deportistas en entrenamiento porque debido a que su capacidad diurética provoca deshidratación.
De igual forma, advirtió que el consumo de café en combinación con refrescos negros o bebidas energizantes, por ejemplo, en el caso de los transportistas que buscan resistir al sueño y estar en estado de alerta, puede ser un riesgo inminente.

Tanto el Sindicato Único de Automóviles con Taxímetro y Telefonistas (Suatt) como la Unión de Obreros y Trabajadores del Transporte (Unott) decidieron decretar un paro de 24 horas por el asesinato de un taxista ocurrido esta tarde en el barrio Peñarol.
El titular de la Unott, Oilcar Camaño, explicó a El País que en lo que refiere al transporte urbano, el paro comienza con los primeros servicios a partir de la medianoche, aunque advirtió que “ya está mermando” la cantidad de unidades en las calles.
El reintegro de estos servicios se realizará con la salida de los primeros nocturnos del sábado, entre las 21 y 22 horas, explicó Camaño.
En lo que refiere al transporte suburbano, (los ómnibus que salen de la terminal de Río Branco) el paro comienza con los primeros turnos de mañana sábado y el reintegro será con las primeras salidas del domingo.
Por último, Camaño dijo que los servicios de transporte interdepartamental, que salen de Tres Cruces, no adhieren a la medida sindical.
El dirigente del Suatt, Ary Wiedemann, dijo a El País que “todavía no tenemos fijada la hora en que será levantada la medida, porque eso depende de la hora del sepelio del compañero y todavía no lo tenemos muy claro porque lleva su trámite judicial y administrativo”.
“Cuando le entreguen el cuerpo a la familia y tengamos eso más claro vamos a evaluarlo. Por lo pronto todo el día de mañana vamos a seguir. Si el sepelio fuera mañana (sábado), ya con los primeros turnos del domingo nos reintegraríamos y si el sepelio fuera el domingo, seguiríamos de paro hasta el domingo y ese día evaluaríamos cuándo nos reintegramos”, explicó el dirigente.
Mañana el Suatt realizará un plenario en su local sindical para evaluar nuevas medidas.
Rapiñeros se fugaron sin el dinero
La víctima se encontraba contando el dinero de la recaudación mientras esperaba a su compañero. En ese momento dos jóvenes en una moto llegaron armados para intentar rapiñarlo, a lo que el hombre se resistió. Fue por esto que recibió un disparo en el tórax, el que finalmente le costó la vida.
Fuentes policiales confirmaron a Subrayado que los ladrones huyeron del lugar sin el dinero tras disparar contra el hombre. Pero en su fuga, por la calle Volta, chocaron contra una camioneta a dos cuadras en el cruce de la calle Terencio.
A uno de los delincuentes se le cayó el arma, pero la recuperó y ambos se fueron corriendo. En horas de la tarde se realizó una movilización de los taxistas por el centro de Montevideo. Tomaron 18 de Julio, luego Bulevar Artigas, Garibaldi y San Martín, para finalizar en la sede del sindicato.
