This past weekend, some of my closest friends from Boston visited me. I am glad we had such great weather, and that I could share with them one of my favorite beaches — South Beach. We were armed and ready to enjoy the whole day at the beach. We had a grill, magazines, books, food, games, and good spirit.
Since we didn’t take our car, we had to carry everything, and in the midst of it all, I found myself almost missing the beaches I grew up visiting. In Brazil, they have bars and restaurants at the beach, and if not, some Brazilians sell food, drinks, and other delicacies on the beach. One will be lying on the sand enjoying the sun, and folks will walk around offering alcoholic drinks, food, seafood.
However, because we spent the day at South Beach, we got to enjoy a bonfire, and the most magnificent sunset sky I have ever seen while we were getting ready to leave. The sky was a canvas filled with the most beautiful colors — I love the various shades of purple. I quickly remembered why I have chosen Martha’s Vineyard to call home. The cost of gas and groceries, or perhaps the lack of choices during the winter, are small prices to pay to enjoy all of the beauty this Island offers year-round. As I lay on the sand and took all in, I had so much gratitude for our Island.
I feel like summer is going by so fast, I can sometimes feel fall in the air, and as we enjoy the last days of summer vacation, I want to share some really cool events that are happening this weekend that are all family-friendly.
This coming Saturday, August 15, will be West Tisbury Day. Make sure you don’t miss the Peach Festival at the First Congregational Church from 12 pm to 4. Mad Martha’s will be offering a special batch of peach ice cream. Another event not to miss is the Cinema Circus at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury from 3 pm to 7, also on Saturday. Among the many activities offered are face painting, short films, clowning, concerts, and workshops. For more information go to their website: http://tmvff.org/wtday.
On Monday night, I had the pleasure of meeting an up-and-coming Brazilian artist, Sara Moreira, who lives in New York. Sara was born and raised in Salvador, Bahia, where she learned how to paint. She loved all expressions of art, and said she thought of it as “a way to transcend emotions.” In Salvador, 80 percent of the population is black, and much like the rest of Brazil, the slaves taken to Brazil in the mid-16th century greatly influenced the art scene. Sara was part of the Harlem Fine Arts show at the Harbor View Hotel; visitors seemed as impressed with her paintings as with her vibrant personality. Sara said to me that one “can’t help but fall madly in love with the Island,” and that she is already planning her next vacation to Martha’s Vineyard.
The Brazilian band Choro das 3 performed at the West Tisbury library last Thursday and, according to pianist and piano innovator David Stanwood, the folks who attended the concert were “blown into space.” If this talented band piqued your interest, they have some upcoming concerts you might want to know about: August 16th at the Cotuit Art Center’s first Annual Brazilian Cultural Festival (8:30 pm to 10:00); August 18th, 7:30 pm House Concert Woods Hole, within walking distance of the ferry. For more information about the Brazilian festival visit the website: cotuitcenterforthearts.org/experience-art/brazilian-music-festival.
I also learned about a great project, which will sadly end this week but hopefully will happen again next summer. For the first time this summer, Leah Palmer, the director of English Language Learning ELL (ESL) services on-Island, and an avid supporter of bilingual education, ran a three-week summer camp for pre-K kids, around 90 students were enrolled. The majority of the enrolled students spoke primarily Portuguese at home. Children got to ride on the school bus to camp, and also got a ride home and an introduction to how it feels to attend school.
I also recently learned that Martha’s Vineyard Community Services supported the training of Laudicéia Amaral as a counseling translator. It makes me so happy when I hear about such initiatives. It is great to live in a community that goes to great lengths to accommodate such important needs and provide services such as this.
Have a great rest of the summer, folks!

Eu rapidamente me lembrei do porquê eu escolhi chamar Martha’s Vineyard de lar.
