DANVILLE, Va. –

A group protesting the Confederate Flag in Danville gathered in front of the Sutherlin Mansion Tuesday morning.

The silent protestors held signs reading,”Flying this flag embarrasses me and my city” and “take down the Confederate flag.”

The group is asking Danville City Council to remove the flag from the top of the Confederate monument sitting on city property at the Sutherlin Mansion.

As the group grew throughout the morning, so did supporters of the flag who came to share their opinions as well.

“It stands for too much that is unpleasant,” said Chris Daniel, Danville resident. “Brings back bitter recollections, historic recollections and it’s just an inappropriate symbol.”

“It’s not a hate thing and it shouldn’t be a hate thing,” said David Gunnell, Danville resident. “This is something that we fought and died for, as much as the American Flag. The confederate people fought for what they believed in. Whether it was right or wrong is irrelevant.”

Those opposing the flag flying on city property want city council to formally ask the Attorney General about the issue. They want to see city council take a vote on the issue in a public session.
