GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois on Sunday likened the Republican Party to the Titanic as House Conference Chair Liz Cheney’s potential ouster from leadership continues to roil lawmakers.

During an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Kinzinger said that the GOP was “in the middle of this slow sink.”

Kinzinger, who was one of 10 House Republicans that voted to impeach former President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot, said that Cheney has been steadfast in her condemnation of the former president inciting insurrectionists since that day. She has also rebuked Trump’s continued assertions that the 2020 presidential election won illegitimately by President Joe Biden.

The congressman then contrasted Cheney’s words to those of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who he said had changed his story since the day of the riot.

“Liz Cheney is saying exactly what Kevin McCarthy said the day of the insurrection,” he said. “She’s just been consistently saying it. A few weeks later, Kevin McCarthy changed to attacking other people.”

Kinzinger said that the GOP must have “an internal look and a full accounting” of what led to the riot and compared the party to the Titanic, the ill-fated British passenger liner which sank in the North Atlantic Ocean during its maiden voyage in 1912.

“Right now, it’s basically the Titanic,” he said. “We’re in the middle of this slow sink. We have a band playing on the deck telling everybody it’s fine. And meanwhile, Donald Trump’s running around trying to find women’s clothing and get on the first lifeboat.”

He added: “I think there’s a few of us that are just saying ‘guys this is not good,’ not just for the future of the party, but this is not good for the future of this country.”

Earlier this year, Kinzinger, a vocal critic of Trump, was accused of committing “treason” by several of his own family members after publicly blasting the former president for his conduct.

In a fiery letter, which Kinzinger first discussed in an interview with Insider’s Anthony L. Fisher and shared with The New York Times, the family members accused him of abandoning his “Christian principles” and joining “the devil’s army,” which they referred to as Democrats and the media.

In a second letter, the family members accused Kinzinger, who joined the Air Force in 2003, of working against the country by questioning Trump.

William Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, will leave his position on Jan. 1, according to a person familiar with his plans.

Taylor plans to turn over his responsibilities as chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv to the current deputy chief of mission, Kristina Kvien, on Jan. 1 and leave Ukraine’s capital the following day, according to the source.

Taylor’s departure was first reported by NBC News. Under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, Taylor could remain at the post in Kyiv until Jan. 8, and his contract at the State Department extends longer than that, the source familiar with his plans said.

Taylor alleged an effort by Trump administration officials to condition a White House meeting and nearly $400 million in security assistance on Ukraine launching investigations into Burisma, an energy company that employed Hunter Biden on its board, and 2016 election interference.

Trump raised the investigations on a July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that is at the heart of the impeachment inquiry. Trump has defended the phone call as “perfect,” denying any wrongdoing and maintaining there was no quid pro quo in his dealings with Ukraine.

Trump lashed out at Taylor during the impeachment proceedings, labeling him a “Never Trumper” and tacitly criticizing Pompeo for tapping him for the role.

It is unclear what Taylor’s professional plans are after he returns from Kyiv. The State Department did not return a request for information following reports he would leave the position.

When an American president speaks with President Vladimir Putin of Russia on major international issues of disagreement, it should be a forthright discussion. Or some variation on that theme of diplomatic disagreement.

The White House should not reference, as it did on Friday, a “very positive” call. After all, the White House says the two leaders discussed North Korea, Ukraine, Venezuela, nuclear arms control, and the Mueller report. And Putin’s interests are very much in conflict with our own on each of those issues.

On North Korea, Putin is undercutting Trump’s effort to persuade Kim Jong Un to abandon his nuclear and long-range ballistic missile programs. Putin sees North Korea as an opportunity to destabilize U.S. security, and Russia’s pathway towards a South Korean port network. The Russian leader has little concern over Kim’s retention of nuclear weapons. Indeed, as those weapons threaten America, Putin’s government finds it funny.

On Ukraine, Putin wants to sever Crimea and two other southeastern provinces from the Ukrainian government. Pursuing that objective, Putin mixes a combination of irregular warfare, temporary cease fires (as in Syria), and intelligence action to control the highways between Mariupol, Donetsk, and Luhansk. Trump has actively countered these efforts, but it is impossible that Putin had anything good to say about the issue on Friday, because Putin is not quitting in Ukraine.

On Venezuela, Putin has taken advantage of Trump’s hesitation to consolidate Nicolás Maduro’s illegitimate regime. This has damaged U.S. foreign policy credibility in Latin America.

On nuclear weapons, Putin is developing next-generation weapons that boost Russia’s first strike capability. While Putin might be inclined to reduce his nuclear warhead stockpile, his recent destruction of the INF treaty and his forward deployment of nuclear strike forces indicate his desire to degrade U.S. security. Trump should thus have had only one message for Putin on Friday: if you keep boosting your nuclear strike efforts, America will keep ensuring we can defeat you in a nuclear war.

On the Mueller report, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders noted that Trump and Putin welcomed the end of that investigation. That’s understandable from Trump’s point of view. Still, the U.S. president should not be having a pleasant conversation with Putin over this issue. The Russian leader is directly responsible for targeting the 2016 elections and the 2018 elections. Either in favor of, or against Trump, Putin will conduct that same aggression in 2020 unless deterred.

This is not to say that Trump and Putin shouldn’t speak or even be civil. But no American president should regard a phone call with Putin as “very positive” when it goes over issues where there is an irreconcilable difference in views. To do so is to delude oneself that Putin has an interest in shared compromise. On the matters of consequence, he does not. Putin is a KGB officer who never truly left the KGB. He lives to weaken America.

A 23-year-old transgender woman seen on a widely circulated video being beaten in front of a crowd of people was found dead over the weekend in a Dallas shooting, police said.

Muhlaysia Booker was found face-down in a street early Saturday and no suspect has been identified, police Maj. Vincent Weddington said Sunday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no apparent link to the April 12 beating Booker suffered after she was involved in a minor traffic accident . A police affidavit released at the time said Booker accidentally backed into a vehicle before the driver of that vehicle pointed a gun at her and refused to let her leave unless she paid for the damage.

As a crowd gathered, someone offered $200 to a man to beat the woman, who suffered a concussion, fractured wrist and other injuries, police said at the time. Other men also struck Booker, with one stomping on her head. Edward Thomas, 29, was arrested and jailed on a charge of aggravated assault.

A cellphone recording showed her being beaten as the crowd hollered and watched. Video of the incident was shared on social media.

Booker attended a rally the following week where she said she was grateful to have survived the attack.

“This time I can stand before you, where in other scenarios, we’re at a memorial,” The Dallas Morning News reported her as saying.

Weddington said Sunday that the investigation into the April attack continues.

“We’re still attempting to identify other people that were seen assaulting Muhlaysia in the video,” he said.

As Ohio Governor Mike DeWine spoke at a community gathering after the Dayton shooting, the crowd erupted in chants of “Do something.”
USA TODAY

DAYTON, Ohio – In the wake of Dayton’s mass shooting Sunday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine was shouted down by a crowd of vigil attendees wanting action.

As he took the stage in the Oregon District of Dayton, the location of Sunday’s mass shooting, and commented on the size of the crowd gathered, he was met with chants.

“Do something!” the crowd chanted over and over.

“We’re here tonight because we know that we cannot … we know that we cannot … ease the pain of those families who have lost someone,” said DeWine, a Republican, as the chants grew. “We also know that we want to do something.”

Nine people were killed and 27 injured when a suspected gunman opened fire at the Oregon District. The gunman was killed by police.

DeWine has been working on a “red flag law,” which would permit police or relatives to petition a court to remove guns from people deemed dangerous. Several states passed them after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

But DeWine is trying to thread a needle with Second Amendment advocates concerned about due process rights and a GOP-controlled Legislature that has shown little interest in gun control.

DeWine’s history with firearms-related legislation is mixed.

In Congress, DeWine’s support of gun control, such as background checks at gun shows, earned him an “F” rating from the NRA. In 2006, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence endorsed DeWine in his U.S. Senate race.

He improved to a “C” in 2014, after his first term as Ohio’s attorney general.

9 dead, 27 injured: Dayton vigil turns into campaign for gun control: ‘When do we want it? Now!’; gunman’s sister among 9 dead

The suspect: Ohio shooting: Police have identified 24-year-old man as suspect who killed 9 in Dayton shooting

But during the GOP primary for governor in 2018, DeWine was not the first choice of gun groups. They preferred his lieutenant governor and one-time rival Jon Husted or even former Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, who proudly donned her rifle at a 2018 gun-rights rally on the Statehouse steps.

DeWine and Husted joined forces on the GOP ticket. Husted’s presence eased some gun rights advocates’ fears that DeWine might act like former Gov. John Kasich. Kasich signed every Second Amendment bill that crossed his desk and then suddenly started advocating for gun restrictions.

In the end, the National Rifle Association endorsed DeWine’s bid for governor over Democrat Rich Cordray, former leader of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

“This is a vigil tonight, a vigil for the people we have lost,” Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said. “There will be time for action.”

In an early decision involving abortion, newly confirmed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh sided with liberals in declining to hear a case that could have allowed states to defund Planned Parenthood in state Medicaid programs.

My colleague Kimberly Leonard has more background and details of the cases, but the basic gist is that lower court rulings prevented Louisiana and Kansas from blocking abortion provider Planned Parenthood from participating in Medicaid. The Supreme Court has now decided to pass on the cases.

Only four justices are needed to agree to grant a hearing on any case. So to stop it from reaching the high court, it took Kavanaugh siding with Chief Justice John Roberts and liberal justices.

Three conservative justices — Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch — all voted to hear the case.

Supreme Court watchers are hanging on every sign from Kavanaugh and Roberts as to how they may rule on abortion given the new makeup of the bench. While it’s difficult to assess what implications this particular decision says about their thinking on the issue, the decision not to hear these cases is at least noteworthy, as it suggests a certain level of caution on taking on contentious cases involving abortion in any way.

In a dissent, Thomas complained that the court wanted to shy away from the case because it involves Planned Parenthood, even though it doesn’t have any direct implications on abortion rights.

“So what explains the Court’s refusal to do its job here?” Thomas wrote. “I suspect it has something to do with the fact that some respondents in these cases are named ‘Planned Parenthood.’ That makes the Court’s decision particularly troubling, as the question presented has nothing to do with abortion. It is true that these particular cases arose after several States alleged that Planned Parenthood affiliates had, among other things, engaged in ‘the illegal sale of fetal organs’ and ‘fraudulent billing practices,’ and thus removed Planned Parenthood as a state Medicaid provider … But these cases are not about abortion rights. They are about private rights of action under the Medicaid Act. Resolving the question presented here would not even affect Planned Parenthood’s ability to challenge the States’ decisions; it concerns only the rights of individual Medicaid patients to bring their own suits.”

This certainly does not sound like a majority that is chomping at the bit to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Update: One Supreme Court watcher writes: “As I recall the history of this case, the first vote for cert [i.e. certiorari — granting a hearing] would have taken place before Kavanaugh’s appointment — and Roberts would have had to refuse to vote for cert then as it only takes four votes to accept the case. I assume Kavanaugh did not want to be the late-arriving fourth vote for cert, and that’s a reasonable call for a brand-new justice to make. Less defensible is Roberts apparent concern about the atmospherics of taking a case with ‘Planned Parenthood’ in the title.”

[The Astrophysical Journal Letters vía NASA]

But Manchin is also intrigued by a proposal from Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), which would extend the $300 unemployment benefits until July 18 — and amounts to a cut from both the Carper proposal and the House bill. Manchin spoke by telephone with Portman on Friday afternoon as the intrigue grew and the Senate stalled.

“There’s bipartisan support for what Rob’s trying to do. And Manchin’s getting beat up by his side. They’re trying to get him in line, so to speak. And he’s trying to do the right thing,” said Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.). “He knows that the Portman amendment saves a lot of money and is better policy. But Democrats in his caucus obviously don’t want to give Republicans a bipartisan win on this.”

Thune said he believed the Portman proposal could pass despite skepticism among some conservatives about any additional federal unemployment payments. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he didn’t know where Manchin’s vote was. He said Democrats “don’t want” Portman’s amendment: “We want to get this wrapped up.”

The Carper proposal, hatched by both moderate and progressive Democrats, also links up the expiration of unemployment benefits with the current lapse of government funding at the end of September. But a vote on the measure was delayed as Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-Nev.) held an animated discussion with Manchin on the Senate floor.

Sinema indicated to Manchin that he could theoretically vote for both Carper’s Democratic amendment and Portman’s GOP amendment in an attempt to end the stalemate. The two parties are fighting over which order to hold the amendment votes in.

Democrats said they were concerned that approving the GOP changes on unemployment benefits could require another round of negotiations with the House and Biden. That would risk pushing the bill’s consideration closer to March 14, when the current round of boosted benefits is set to expire.

“If it gets to a certain level it may require renegotiating with the House and the White House and then it has to come back to the Senate. And that’s not a desirable outcome,” said Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.). “The clock’s ticking, so timing is pretty important.”

The Democratic compromise has the White House’s backing, with chief of staff Ron Klain and press secretary Jen Psaki both tweeting statements of support.

“The President believes it is critical to extend expanded unemployment benefits through the end of September to help Americans who are struggling,“ Psaki said, noting that the deal will ultimately “provide more relief to the unemployed“ than the legislation that passed the House last week.

Five hours into the Senate’s first amendment vote on the minimum wage, which began late Friday morning, there was no final roll call as Democrats continued to tussle over unemployment benefits. And there’s still plenty more drama ahead, with the GOP seeking to inflict maximum political pain. The protracted ordeal, known as “vote-a-rama,” is widely despised by members of both parties and guaranteed to leave sleepless members running on fumes just ahead of the bill’s passage in the upper chamber, likely Saturday. But there’s no way around it.

Prince Harry and Meghan have welcomed a baby boy.

“As every father and parent would ever say, you know, your baby is absolutely amazing,” Harry said Monday in announcing the birth of his first child. “But this little thing is absolutely to die for, so I’m just over the moon.”

The newborn weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces. The baby was born at 5:26 a.m. local time, according to Buckingham Palace.

Both mom and baby are “doing incredibly well,” Prince Harry said in his brief remarks outside Frogmore Cottage, the Windsor home where he and Meghan will raise their son.

Prince Harry speaks at Windsor Castle in England, May 6, 2019, after his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex gave birth to a baby boy.

The public will get their first glimpse of the family of three — Meghan, Harry and the baby — later this week, according to Harry.

In the meantime, he and Meghan will spend time bonding with their baby.

When asked about a name, Harry said he and Meghan are “still thinking” about it, adding, “That’s the next bit.”

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is with the couple at Frogmore Cottage, according to Buckingham Palace. The Los Angeles-based Ragland is “overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild,” the palace said.

Harry’s royal family members — including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla, Prince William and Kate — and relatives of Princess Diana, Harry and William’s late mother, were informed of the baby’s birth and are “delighted with the news,” according to Buckingham Palace.

Meghan, 37, went into labor in her 41st week of pregnancy, one week past her due date.

“I’m so incredibly proud of my wife,” said Harry, 34, who called the birth of his son “amazing” and “absolutely incredible.”

Following royal tradition, a framed notice of birth for Harry and Meghan’s son went on display on a ceremonial easel at the gates of Buckingham Palace Monday.

Members of staff set up an official notice on an easel at the gates of Buckingham Palace in London on May 6, 2019 announcing the birth of a son to Britain’s Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Baby Sussex’s place in the royal family

The baby is seventh in line to the British throne, falling behind Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and Prince Harry.

Baby Sussex will not automatically be a prince, unlike his cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who were designated as his or her royal highness and given the title of prince or princess.

The baby’s great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, can step in to give him that title, however.

He is the fourth grandchild for Prince Charles and the eighth great-grandchild for Queen Elizabeth. Meghan and Harry’s son will share a close birthday to his cousin, Princess Charlotte, who turned 4 on May 2.

Baby Sussex appears to be the first mixed-race child born into the royal family. Meghan was born to a white father and a black mother and grew up as a biracial child in Los Angeles.

Some royal historians have pointed out though that when Queen Charlotte married King George III in the 1700s, he was believed to have descended from the black branch of the Portuguese royal family. The couple had 15 children, according to the British royal family’s website.

The son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, could hold dual American and British nationality, a first for a royal baby.

Meghan, a California native, is reportedly still waiting for her British citizenship application to be approved.

“From what I understand, Harry and Meghan will have to acquire documentation for their child to prove U.S. citizenship and it’s not clear if they will do that but of course the option is there,” said ABC News royal contributor Victoria Murphy.

Harry and Meghan as parents

Prince Harry married Meghan last May. Five months later, they announced the pregnancy as they embarked on their 16-day tour of Australia, New Zealand Fiji and Tonga.

In candid moments interacting with children during that tour and in the months since, Harry and Meghan have given a glimpse into the kind of hands-on parents they are expected to be.

Harry spoke about his love for little ones in a 2016 interview with “GMA” co-anchor Robin Roberts, saying he “can’t wait for the day” he has children. At the time, he said he tries to be the “fun uncle” for Prince William and Kate’s children.

“I’ve got a kid inside of me, I want to keep that, I adore kids,” he added. “I enjoy everything that they bring to the party, and they just say what they think.”

Meghan’s friends have also described her as someone with a maternal instinct who is genuine in her interactions, particularly with kids.

“When you see her at walkabouts, when she crouches down to talk to the kids and genuinely has real conversations with people, that’s Meg,” a former costar of Meghan’s told People magazine in February. “That’s how she crouches down with our kids at home. That’s how she plays with them. That’s how she engages with people and how she always has.”
