Federal prosecutors have requested a “substantial term of imprisonment” for Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen but asked that a judge consider his cooperation with the special counsel’s Russia probe and other investigations in his sentencing.

The recommendation came from a pair of much-anticipated sentencing memos submitted by the government Friday evening. Those documents also provide new details on the “relevant and truthful” information Cohen has provided special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation into contacts between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia.

In a statement Friday night, the White House said the “government’s filings in Mr. Cohen’s case tell us nothing of value that wasn’t already known.” Press secretary Sarah Sanders continued: “Mr. Cohen has repeatedly lied and as the prosecution has pointed out to the court, Mr. Cohen is no hero.”

Cohen has pleaded guilty to financial crimes, campaign finance violations and lying to Congress. The cases were handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and Mueller’s office.

In their filing, prosecutors in New York argued against leniency for Cohen, saying he had committed four federal crimes over the course of several years.

Cohen, they say, was “motivated by personal greed,” and they argue that he “repeatedly used his power and influence for deceptive ends.”

The New York prosecutors asked a judge to impose a sentence moderately less than the potential maximum of 63 months in prison that Cohen faces. The Probation Department has recommended a 42-month term.

The campaign finance violations that Cohen pleaded guilty to in New York federal court related to so-called hush-money payments made to two women who said they had affairs with Trump. Trump has acknowledged the payments to one of the women but has denied their underlying allegations of sexual relationships.

Cohen has said those payments were directed by Trump.

Although Cohen has been cooperating with investigators in New York City and with the office of Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, he does not have a full cooperation agreement with the government.

Mueller’s office, in a separate filing, did not take a position on what sentence Cohen should receive when he appears before a judge next week in New York City.

Mueller’s filing did, however, outline Cohen’s help in the Russia investigation. It said that over the course of seven meetings with investigators, he has provided new information about contacts between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russians, including outreach as early as November 2015 from people seeking to arrange meetings between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The meeting did not take place.

Cohen has also provided information about “certain discrete Russia-related matters core” to the special counsel’s investigation. Mueller’s filing says he obtained that information “by virtue of his regular contact with Company executives during the campaign,” which appears to be a reference to the Trump Organization.

And finally, the special counsel’s team says Cohen gave them information about his contacts with people connected to the White House, as well as providing detail about how his false statements to Congress were put together.

Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about negotiations between Trump’s business and powerful Russians about a possible deal for a Trump Tower in Moscow, a building that ultimately was never built.

Cohen initially told Congress that the talks had stopped by January 2016. Actually, he said in his guilty plea, they continued well into the campaign, past the point at which Trump became the Republican front-runner.

The crafting of that narrative was a “deliberate effort to use his lies as a way to set the tone and shape the course of the hearings in an effort to stymie the inquiries,” the special counsel’s office said.

Cohen wanted to obscure from Congress and the public that if the project had been completed, Trump’s company “could have received hundreds of millions of dollars from Russian sources in licensing fees and other revenues,” prosecutors wrote.

They continued: “The fact that Cohen continued to work on the project and discuss it with [Trump] well into the campaign was material to the ongoing congressional and [special counsel] investigations, particularly because it occurred at a time of sustained efforts by the Russian government to interfere with the U.S. presidential election.”

Mueller’s office has been tasked with investigating whether anyone in Trump’s campaign conspired with the Russians who were waging those “active measures” against the United States and the West.

Trump says his campaign had nothing to do with the Russian election interference and has denounced Mueller’s investigation as a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.”

Trump repeated his criticism again on Friday and said on Twitter that his attorneys have already begun work on a rebuttal to Mueller in case the special counsel’s report is damaging to Trump and becomes public.

The Trump camp also has focused its criticism on Cohen, with Trump’s attorney calling Cohen “a liar” who is making up stories to persuade the government to ease his sentence.

The president has acknowledged “lightly” looking into a Trump Tower project in Moscow but said that doing so broke no law and that he was perfectly within his rights to continue to operate his real estate business at the same time his presidential campaign was picking up steam.

The abrupt and pointed resignation of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis on Thursday alarmed official Washington. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) called him an “an island of stability amid the chaos of the Trump administration.” Retiring Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) told The Washington Post that “having Mattis there gave all of us a great deal more comfort than we have now.”

Mattis’s departure seems to be provoking unease, especially considering how dangerous our nuclear-command arrangements are. The notion that Mattis, a former four-star Marine Corps general, could have blocked or defied a move by Trump to impulsively launch nuclear weapons may have seemed comforting, but it shouldn’t have been. The secretary of defense has no legal position in the nuclear chain of command, and any attempts by a secretary of defense to prevent the president from exercising the authority to use nuclear weapons would be undemocratic and illegal. With or without Mattis, the president has unchecked and complete authority to launch nuclear weapons based on his sole discretion.

The reaction to Mattis’s resignation, however, could open the door for the new Congress to create long-overdue legal barriers preventing the president from initiating a nuclear strike. Such a step could be implemented without any negative impact on U.S. security or that of our allies.

Every day, the U.S. nuclear early warning system is triggered by some event or another, mostly civilian and military rocket launches by one or more of a dozen countries with ballistic missiles. When such launches appear to threaten North America, the head of U.S. Strategic Command is alerted, and sometimes these alerts warrant the urgent notification of the president. That alert comes by way of a direct call from the Strategic Command or via the White House Situation Room, the emergency-operations bunker beneath the East Wing, or the national security adviser. Partly a remnant of the Cold War, this system remains in place today to ensure the president can be notified quickly of any direct threat to the United States’ nuclear arsenal and the facilities that control it. That way, he can launch nuclear missiles before they are destroyed or the U.S. government is incapacitated by incoming weapons.

In normal times, this system is precarious, and it can pressure even experienced leaders to consider nuclear weapons in a crisis sooner than warranted. Alerts stemming from ambiguous ballistic nuclear missile threats occurred multiple times during the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and some alerts went directly to those presidents.

Yet, this system seems especially ill-suited to a president who has demonstrated time and again that he can be provoked into taking rash action, and who, as a candidate, openly questioned why the United States could not use the nuclear weapons it possesses. This is a dangerous set of instincts for a commander in chief with sole and unchecked authority over almost 4,000 nuclear weapons, nearly 1,000 of which could be fired within a few minutes.

For over a year, Mattis has been trying to reassure congressional leaders that he could help check some of Trump’s impulses, in part by intervening in the nuclear chain of command. In a break with normal procedures, Mattis reportedly told the commander of the Strategic Command to keep him directly informed of any event that might lead to a nuclear alert being sent to the president. He even told the Strategic Command “not to put on a pot of coffee without letting him know.”

Congressional leaders interpreted this to mean that Mattis would either deal with a possible threat before it reached Trump or ensure he was present to advise Trump when such an alert arrived.

This assurance may have helped ease concerns about our nuclear weapons for some members of Congress, but only if they were unfamiliar with how the command and control structure truly works. Personal relationships and back channels are no way to manage a nuclear arsenal.

Even informed observers are surprised to learn the president can order the use of nuclear weapons without the input — or consent — of the secretaries of Defense or State, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or the vice president. They only have a role in the presidential launch protocol if the president has given prior approval for them to be notified and solicits their advice. Otherwise, none of these people would need to be involved or informed that the president has decided to use a nuclear weapon.

Under standard procedure, an attempt would be made to contact key national security officials, but in some real-world and exercise scenarios, it has proven impossible to tie them into a quickly convened emergency teleconference. Should he wish, the president could exclude all of them, and even bypass the primary designated adviser — the four-star general in charge of U.S. strategic forces — by ordering a low-ranking on-duty emergency operations officer at the Pentagon or elsewhere to transmit a launch order directly to the executing commanders of strategic U.S. submarines, silo-based missiles and bombers.

Trump could have learned all this in a briefing about nuclear weapons shortly after he took office, and his military aide, ever at his side, could explain and assist in issuing a direct order to a lower-level officer at any time.

Even if Mattis had been with Trump at a time of nuclear crisis, his resignation letter drives home the fact that Trump might very well have simply ignored his counsel. Trump, as he is proving in stark terms, listens only to himself. And any attempt by another person to physically block the president from issuing a launch order would probably result in his or her removal by the Secret Service. It is delusional and fundamentally undemocratic to think that our strongest check on a president bent on initiating nuclear war without justifiable cause might be a defense secretary trying to keep the president from communicating his launch authority using the so-called Gold Codes.

When the United States faced the prospect of sudden nuclear attack from the Soviet Union, this system helped reinforce deterrence based on a balance of nuclear terror. But since the demise of the U.S.S.R., and even with a more aggressive Russia, the whole arrangement raises questions about its necessity, risks and consistency with democratic values. It is well past time for the system to be reformed to ensure that it hews to our Constitution and mitigates as much as possible the very real risks associated with a renewed arms competition with Russia.

One key issue is whether Trump — or any president — should have the legal ability to independently initiate the use of nuclear weapons. It seems reasonable that the president needs to be able to quickly order a nuclear response if an adversary employs nuclear weapons first against us, and that he would not have time to consult with Congress or the Cabinet if nuclear missiles were headed here. (The flight time of ballistic missiles over intercontinental distances is 30 minutes or less, and the president would have only about five to seven minutes to decide whether and how to respond.)

However, our chain of command is not just a presidential preference — it can be determined by legislative action. Congress can and should prohibit any president from using nuclear weapons first. The incoming chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), proposed such legislation last year. It states that it is the policy of the United States not to be the first to use nuclear weapons. Congress could make any first-use illegal, constraining the president from issuing such an order and obligating any member of the military to disobey a command to do so. A no-first-use policy would also ratchet down tensions with Russia and facilitate reductions in the number and types of nuclear weapons in both U.S. and Russian arsenals. The logic and political salience of this position is growing, with some 20 members of the incoming Congress — including House Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) — now on record supporting no first use.

Legislation to bar first use probably wouldn’t get through the Republican Senate or be signed into law by Trump. But recognition that the system puts too much power in the hands of one person increases the likelihood that the next president will either adopt such a posture or accept legislative controls. Maintaining an outdated and unstable system is clearly too dangerous.

Bending norms and the military chain of command to prevent a disastrous presidential decision is not a reliable safeguard, and extralegal measures should not be how the United States prevents a nuclear war. Neither Mattis nor anyone else can reassure the American people that a president will not, on a whim, use the most fearsome weapons humans have ever invented. Only laws can constrain such a dangerous prospect. It is well past time for our country to take control of the nuclear chain of command.

Donald Trump’s former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has defended himself after the House Select Committee investigating the 6 January Capitol Hill riots made public a series of text messages urging him to convince the former president to call an end to the riots.

The text messages were sent from GOP lawmakers, Fox News personalities such as Sean Hannity, and the former president’s son, Donald Trump Jr.

Follow live for latest on Mark Meadows vote and reaction

On Monday, the House Select Committee voted to recommend prosecution for criminal contempt of Congress after Mr Meadows refused to testify about the 6 January insurrection.

In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity hours later, Mr Meadows said that he was not surprised by the House moving to hold him in contempt. “It’s disappointing, but not surprising,” he said. “Let’s be clear about this, this is not about me, holding me in contempt. It’s not even about making the Capitol safer.”

“We’ve seen that by the selective leaks that are going on right now. This is about Donald Trump and about actually going after him once again,” he said, adding that the “real nature of this investigation, the foundation, is not based on a legislative purpose”.

Later on Monday, the House committee voted to advance referring Mr Meadows to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on criminal contempt of Congress charges – a development that Mr Meadows had predicted on Mr Hannity’s show.

Mr Meadows spoke to the conservative broadcaster Newsmax on Tuesday, arguing that the impending vote to hold him in contempt of Congress was more about Mr Trump than his own actions.

“This is not about holding me in contempt. This is more about Donald Trump and trying to come after him,” Mr Meadows said.

The former Trump aide also argued that the former president himself was also concerned about the violent scenes unfolding at the Capitol.

“A number of people were concerned about the violence,” Mr Meadows told Newsmax. “All of us were, including the president, the entire nation, so there’s no problem here as much as there is a selective disclosure of certain text, trying to feed a narrative that the Jan. 6 committee wants to put forth, and it’s this conspiracy that somehow the Jan. 6 breach of the Capitol was somehow a planned effort from the White House, and that’s just simply not the case. I think the text messages show that.”

A new report from the House committee detailed Mr Meadows’ private messages leading up to and during the attempted insurrection on 6 January.

The 51-page report contained his communications with people regarding the 2020 presidential elections, Mr Trump’s lies about it and his actions during the riot. It was released after Mr Meadows refused to answer questions from the committee.

“In fact, as the violence at the Capitol unfolded, Mr Meadows received many messages encouraging him to have Mr Trump issue a statement that could end the violence, and one former White House employee reportedly contacted Mr Meadows several times and told him,” said the report.

Mr Meadows was cooperating with the House committee earlier but later stopped and is now suing them. “I can say that when you look at the criminal component of the intent, there’s never been an intent on my part,” Mr Meadows said.

“I have tried to share non-privileged information but truly, the executive privilege that Donald Trump has claimed is not mine to waive, it’s not congress’ to waive and that’s why we filed the lawsuit to hopefully get the courts to weigh in – hopefully they will weigh in,” he added.

However, the interview with Fox News did not include any questions on the text messages that had been sent to Mr Meadows.

“They want to talk about the part that fits their narrative,” Mr Meadows said. “And what we do know that in one of the things that is coming out more and more clearly each and every day is that everyone condemned what happened in terms of the breach of security on the capitol on 6 January.”

Multiple hurricanes ripped through Mississippi on Sunday, blowing the roofs off homes, felling trees and tearing down power lines in the city of Tupelo and elsewhere.

Images shared on social media showed trees pulled out from their roots by the enormous twister, which was moving at 45mph, which also left a Tupelo gas station in tatters.

Footage captured by residents revealed the size of the cloud tunnel, which dwarfed nearby homes and brought high winds that shook street lights.

‘Emergency crews are currently assessing the degree of damage,’ the mayor’s office said in a statement on Facebook, urging people to stay in their homes.

‘Please do not get out and drive. It is dangerous – there are reports that power lines are down in the roads,’ it said.

“Odio a Trump”

Yo odio a Donald Trump”.

River Plate y Racing descartados.

As the Delta variant of COVID-19 runs rampant throughout the U.S., a renewed push is being made to get more Americans vaccinated.

President Joe Biden said last week he would require federal workers to verify they have been vaccinated or undergo regular testing.

Similar policies have been introduced at some local governments, while some companies are requiring their employees to get the vaccine to return to the office. Even Broadway said it will make the same request of theatergoers before attending a show.

Of course, you could bring the COVID-19 vaccine card verifying those details with you, which brings not only the annoyance of carrying it everywhere (try fitting that into a wallet), but the fear you wind up losing it.

Thank goodness we have something else in our pockets that can assist: our smartphones. Here are a few ways you can keep your vaccine card handy:

Seriously, that’s it. If you go this route, consider placing it in a hidden album so it can’t be viewed from your library. This also avoids the awkward scenario of having to scroll through the abyss of your camera roll to pull up your vaccine card.

Sorry, Mr. President, special counsel Robert Mueller’s report destroyed the Logan Act’s continuing legal viability. It cannot be used to prosecute John Kerry.

The context here is President Trump’s suggestion on Thursday that former Secretary of State John Kerry be charged with violating the Logan Act. The act restricts private individuals from conducting foreign policy “without the authority” of the U.S. government. But Trump is upset over Kerry’s discussions with Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif in relation to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Kerry supports that nuclear deal, but Trump strongly opposes it and has imposed significant sanctions on Iran in pursuit of a new deal.

But as I say, Kerry can’t be prosecuted under the Logan Act. Because Mueller’s report showed prima facie evidence of breaches of the Logan Act by former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and potentially also Jared Kushner and Trump himself. As I’ve noted, Flynn’s conduct during the 2016 presidential transition period evidences “successful, unauthorized effort to affect a foreign government’s foreign policy.”

Flynn was not authorized by the Obama administration to carry on that activity, and it was fundamentally counter to President Barack Obama’s foreign policy. So if Flynn wasn’t charged for his actions, Kerry cannot be charged over his.

In short, the Logan Act is dead. That is rightly so: the act is almost certainly unconstitutional in its infringement of the individual right to free speech.

The man accused of opening fire inside a Southern California synagogue was a college student, athlete and musician whose embrace of white supremacy and anti-Semitism has dumbfounded his family and others who thought they knew him well. John T. Earnest, 19, made the dean’s list both semesters last year as a nursing student at California State University, San Marcos.

In high school, he had stellar grades, swam on the varsity team and played piano solos at talent shows.

Earnest apparently became radicalized sometime over the last two years and is charged with murder and attempted murder in Saturday’s assault on the Chabad of Poway synagogue, which killed one woman and injured three people, including the rabbi. He is also charged with arson in connection with an attack last month on a mosque in nearby Escondido.

Owen Cruise, 20, saw Earnest every day during senior year at Mt. Carmel High School in San Diego when the two were in calculus and physics together. They were in the school’s amateur radio club together.

Earnest’s piano performances drew audiences to their feet. He did a rendition of “Pirates of the Caribbean” and played Chopin and Beethoven. “Crowds would be cheering his name,” Cruise said Monday. “Everybody loved him.”

His father, John A. Earnest, is a popular physics teacher at Mt. Carmel, where he has worked for 31 years.

“He was very close to his dad,” Cruise said. “He always hung out in his classroom, came to see him at lunch. He always seemed like a nice guy … He didn’t seem like the type of person who would go off the deep end.”

8-year-old injured in Poway synagogue shooting: “It was very, very scary”

Earnest’s father volunteered to help students with exams and homework, said Cruise, who praised his former teacher for having a big impact on his life. On the morning of the shooting, the elder Earnest was hosting a study hour for an Advanced Placement exam and brought cookies, Cruise said.

Cruise, now a sophomore at the University of California, San Diego, said the suspect lived at home and saw his parents every day. “The way John T. acted is not representative at all of the way he was raised,” Cruise said. “They are an outstanding family. Some of the finest people I’ve ever met.”

The suspect’s parents said their son and five siblings were raised in a family that “rejected hate and taught that love must be the motive for everything we do.” “To our great shame, he is now part of the history of evil that has been perpetrated on Jewish people for centuries,” the parents said Monday in their first public comments. “Our son’s actions were informed by people we do not know, and ideas we do not hold.”

The parents, who are cooperating with investigators, do not plan to plan to provide legal representation to their son, whose initial court appearance was scheduled for Tuesday. Family attorney Earll Pott said a public defender will probably be appointed.

Earnest burst into the synagogue on the last day of Passover, a major Jewish holiday that celebrates freedom, and opened fire with an assault-style rifle on the crowd of about 100.

He fled when the rifle jammed, according to authorities and witnesses, avoiding an Army combat veteran and an off-duty Border Patrol agent who pursued him. He called 911 to report the shooting and surrendered a short time later.

Lori Kaye , a founding member of the congregation, was killed. Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein was shot in the hands, while Noya Dahan, 8, and her uncle Almog Peretz suffered shrapnel wounds. Kaye, 60, was remembered for her kindness Monday at a memorial service at the packed synagogue in Poway, a well-to-do suburb north of San Diego.

Noya Dahan told “CBS This Morning” she hid by herself watching the nightmare unfold. “I knew that something was wrong because it wasn’t adding up to me, because I heard loud sounds,” Noya said. “It was very, very scary, and I’m not supposed to go through this stuff.”

A manifesto — written by a person identifying himself as John Earnest and published online shortly before the attack — spewed hatred toward Jews and praised the perpetrators of attacks on mosques in New Zealand that killed 50 people last month and at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue that killed 11 on Oct. 27.

Earnest frequented 8chan, a dark corner of the web where those disaffected by mainstream social media sites often post extremist, racist and violent views.

“I’ve only been lurking here for a year and half, yet what I’ve learned here is priceless. It’s been an honor,” he wrote.

Earnest, who evidently intended to livestream the attack, offered a list of recommended songs for people to listen to while watching, including “Sloop John B” by The Beach Boys and the Pokemon theme song. He said he had planned the attack for four weeks.

“If you told me even 6 months ago that I would do this I would have been surprised,” Earnest wrote.

No, dice Portale.

At the center of the legal debate over the law is the mechanism that essentially deputizes private citizens, rather than the state’s executive branch, to enforce the new restrictions by suing anyone who performs an abortion or “aids and abets” a procedure. Plaintiffs who have no connection to the patient or the clinic may sue and recover legal fees, as well as $10,000 if they win.

In its court filing, the Justice Department called this mechanism “an unprecedented scheme that seeks to deny women and providers the ability to challenge S.B. 8 in federal court.”

It said that in other cases where states had enacted laws that abridged reproductive rights to the extent that the Texas law does, courts had stopped those measures from taking effect.

Texas’ “attempt to shield a plainly unconstitutional law from review cannot stand,” the department said in its motion.

The Supreme Court did not rule on whether Senate Bill 8 was constitutional when it refused to block the law. The Justice Department has placed its constitutionality at the heart of the lawsuit, which could force the court to consider new factors and possibly come to a different decision if it hears the case.

Opponents and supporters of the Texas law recognize that it is an enormous shift in the nation’s battle over abortion, which has long rested on whether the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that granted women the constitutional right to the procedure.

The Texas law essentially allows a state to all but ban abortions before a legal test of that watershed case. If the law is not stopped by the courts, other Republican-led state legislatures could use it as a blueprint for their own restrictions.

OCEAN CITY, Md. (WJZ) — The National Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Warning for multiple counties along Maryland’s Eastern Shore as Tropical Storm Elsa moves up the Atlantic Coast.

A tornado watch is in effect through 11 p.m. for Calvert, St. Mary’s, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties.

READ MORE: Ocean City, Eastern Shore Prepare For Tropical Storm Elsa, Officials Offer Tips To Residents

A tropical storm warning is also in effect for the Eastern Shore.

St. Mary’s County declared a state of emergency Thursday morning ahead of the storm. The state of emergency is a week long and will end at noon on July 13. The emergency order authorizes the Commissioner President “to take such measures as necessary to maximize the preservation of life and property, including the authority to require the evacuation of areas,” the county said.

The NWS anticipates peak winds to hit the region beginning on Thursday night.

A flash flood watch was issued by the NWS for Baltimore City and Cecil, Baltimore, Prince Georges, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert counties until 8 a.m. Friday. Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties are under a flash flood watch until 5 a.m. Friday.

While rain is expected in Baltimore city, heavier rain and wind is expected on the coast to the south and east.

Elsa’s center will make its closest pass to Maryland Thursday night into Friday morning. The latest from the National Hurricane Center is that Elsa has strengthened a bit. Maximums sustained winds are up from 45 mph to 50 mph.

Some uncertainty remains regarding how far north some of Elsa’s rain bands and tropical-storm-force winds will reach, but for now officials feel confident that areas south and east of Baltimore will catch the brunt of this storm. Portions of the lower Eastern Shore and far southern Maryland should prepare for tropical-storm-force winds, heavy rain and rough surf.

Wind was already picking up in Ocean City Thursday afternoon.

There is a chance for thunderstorms and showers beginning Thursday after 3 p.m. in Ocean City. The NWS said there is an 80% chance of heavy rain and wind in the area Thursday night into Friday, and on Friday there will also be a chance for Thunderstorms.

Wind gusts could reach as high as 36 mph Thursday. There is a slight chance for thunderstorms Friday night.

EXCLUSIVE: The organizer of a private mission to rescue an American mom, Mariam, and her three children from Afghanistan says the U.S. State Department is now trying to insert itself into the story of her evacuation, despite playing little to no role for much of the rescue effort.

Senior State Department officials on Monday announced that the “U.S. has facilitated the safe departure of four US citizens by overland route from Afghanistan. Embassy staff was present upon their arrival.”

But those actually involved in the dangerous rescue operation say the State Department deserves little to no credit for Mariam’s escape from Afghanistan.

STATE DEPT BLOCKING PRIVATE RESCUE FLIGHTS FROM LEAVING AFGHANISTAN, ORGANIZERS SAY: ‘BLOOD IS ON THEIR HANDS’

Cory Mills and a private team of military veterans, drawing on funding by private donors including the Sentinel Foundation, led the effort to rescue Mariam and her three children from Afghanistan, where they had been left behind by the Biden administration, multiple sources with knowledge of Mariam’s evacuation confirmed to Fox News.

Mills and his team worked for weeks to get Mariam’s family out of Afghanistan after Republican Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson alerted him to the family’s plight.

Mills’ team first sought to get the family aboard one of the last government flights out of Kabul, but she was unable to gain admission into the airport. The State Department repeatedly urged the four Americans to go to the airport gate, braving Taliban checkpoints along the way, only for them to be refused admission each time, Mills said.

The final time Mariam tried to enter the airport, a Taliban fighter pointed a pistol at her head and warned her not to come back. Shortly after that, Taliban fighters asked Kabul locals who knew Miriam how they could find her. Mills’ team rushed to get her and the children out of the city and into a safehouse.

Plan B was to get Miriam and her family aboard a private charter flight from Mazar-i-Sharif airport, but the planes were never cleared to take off. Some private evacuation organizers have blamed the State Department for failing to gain clearance for private charter flights to land in third countries, while Republican Texas Rep. Michael McCaul has blamed the Taliban for the planes remaining grounded.

Mills’ final card to play was to travel overland to a neighboring country – the exact country is being withheld to avoid jeopardizing future rescue missions – and attempt to get the family across the border.

It took multiple attempts and sleight-of-hand tactics that Mills compared to a shell game, but Mariam’s family finally crossed the border on Monday – just before the Taliban closed the checkpoint to prevent Americans from escaping, Mills said.

The State Department’s public posture about Mariam’s rescue is “absolute nonsense,” Mills told Fox News in an exclusive interview Monday. “The fact that they’re spinning this, trying to take 100% credit when they didn’t track this family, when they placated this family, when the mother, who was under extreme stress and extreme pressure, reached out to the State Department multiple times and got no help.”

DEM SEN. BLUMENTHAL ‘FURIOUS’ OVER BIDEN ADMIN DELAYING AMERICANS TRYING TO LEAVE AFGHANISTAN

A State Department spokesperson, when asked whether the agency is overselling its role in Mariam’s rescue, told Fox News in an email:  “The Department assisted four Americans depart Afghanistan via an overland route on Monday. We provided guidance to them, worked to facilitate their safe passage, and Embassy officials greeted the Americans once they had crossed the border.”

But Mills and others with knowledge of the operation say the State Department is exaggerating its role and had little to do with the rescue mission until the most dangerous part – getting Mariam and her children across the border – was completed.

“This is an attempt to save face by the administration for the Americans they left behind. This is a woman with three children from age 15 all the way down to two-years-old. And they did nothing to try to expedite this… But at the very last minute you have these ‘senior officials’ at the State Department trying to claim credit for this like ‘oh yeah look what we’ve done,'” Mills said.

“It’s like we carried the ball to the 99-and-a-half yard line and them taking it that last half yard and being like ‘look what we did.’”

Rep. Jackson echoed that criticism.

“The only thing the Biden Administration seems to be good at is patting itself on the back for a job horribly done. This administration left my constituents behind in Afghanistan and now they’re lying about their role in getting these four American citizens out,” Jackson said.

“The State Department didn’t do anything for two weeks except put my constituents in danger and leave them stranded. I know this for a fact because my office has been working around the clock to get our people home with no legitimate support from State. Only after Cory Mills and his team got them into the third country did State offer support by securing tourist visas,” the congressman continued.

“Cory and his team are brave patriots. Praise God that American veterans have more resolve than Joe Biden or his State Department.”

Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla, called it a “flat out lie” that the State Department facilitated Mariam’s evacuation, saying the credit belongs to a “team of patriots who worked around the clock for two weeks to get them out, despite the many roadblocks from the State Department.”

Miami-Dade police have found the vehicle used by three gunmen who killed two people and injured more than 20 others during an early Sunday gathering at a banquet hall submerged in a canal.

The Miami-Dade Police Department said Monday that it recovered the Nissan Pathfinder in the area of 154th Street and Northwest Second Avenue. It was reported stolen May 15, police said.

The SUV was found by police divers in Key Biscayne, located just east of Miami. Residents told WPLG-TV the area is a notorious dumping ground.

Hours earlier, authorities released surveillance video of the SUV, which was stolen on May 15, police said. The brief video footage shows the gunmen getting out of the vehicle near the El Mula banquet hall with weapons and running back seconds later before peeling off.

Fox News has reached out to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Investigators said the gunmen waited in their vehicle for 20 to 40 minutes for concertgoers to gather out front and that’s when the gunmen ‘indiscriminately’ opened fire. Several people in the crowd who were armed returned fire, authorities said Monday.

“We will do everything, everything we can and use every resource available to bring these people to justice. We will leave no stone unturned, we will leave nothing behind to bring these shooters to justice,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a news conference.

Two men, both 26, were killed, and 21 were injured. The Miami-Dade Police Department said 18 victims, including five women, remain hospitalized. No arrests have been made.

Three other victims – a 31-year-old woman and two men, ages 21 and 25 — remain in critical condition. Three people have been released from hospitals, including a 17-year-old who was shot in the leg.

Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a rivalry.

“We know that our intended target was most likely in front of the establishment when the shooting took place,” Major Jorge Aguilar of the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Authorities are offering a $130,000 reward for information on the shooting.

How completely out of control is our southern border in Texas? For one example, on Friday, the Border Patrol checkpoint near El Indio, Texas, directly across the Rio Grande river from Mexico, was completely unmanned. There was nobody there. You could have driven a truck full of fentanyl or illegal aliens directly into the United States without being stopped or questioned or checked or anything. No doubt, people did that. Two days later, this Sunday, the border patrol checkpoint on US Highway 57 just east of Eagle Pass, Texas was also totally unmanned. Again, no one there. Eighteen-wheelers drove right over the bridge from a country in the middle of a drug war and sped off into the interior of the United States. God knows what was in those trucks. We’ll never know. Joe Biden really has opened our borders to the world. That’s not a Republican talking point. It is completely real.

Tonight, there are many more coming. Several large groups of Haitians are coming up from various countries in Latin America, where they have been living, to come here. To be perfectly clear: These are not refugees. They are not being persecuted by any government. That’s why they haven’t applied for asylum in any of the countries between Haiti and the United States. These are economic migrants — rich enough for a plane ticket and a smartphone, but eager for the free healthcare, education, housing vouchers, food stamps and much more Joe Biden has promised them if they make it. Of course, they’re coming from Haiti and the rest of the world. You would too. They’d be crazy not to come. Once they get here, the Biden administration plans to give them voting rights. That’s in the works right now. They could very well be choosing your president at some point down the road. This manufactured crisis is an attempt to change the demographics of the United States in order to give permanent power to the Democratic Party. That’s all it is, no matter what they tell you.

The Biden administration knew perfectly well this wave was on the way. A month ago, on August 21st, the Mexican newspaper “Milenio” reported that the first wave of Haitian migrants had arrived in Mexico – 30,000 of them. According to the paper, they weren’t docile or grateful to be in Mexico. Instead, they tried to storm government facilities. “Elements of the National Guard are guarding the installations of the offices of the Mexican Commission for Assistance to Refugees, after a fight among Haitian migrants who attempted to enter these installations by force,” the paper reported on August 5. “There were verbal aggressions and tension.”

ICE OFFICERS INJURED BY HAITIAN MIGRANTS AFTER DEPORTATION FLIGHTS LAND IN PORT-AU-PRINCE

That was last month. This was the scene earlier today in Malpaso, Mexico:

MATT RIVERS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The goal for many is to make it to a place like here, seven hours away in the town of Malpaso, where there is fierce competition to get on the buses headed north. (migrants argue) Tensions boiling over at times. Arguments erupting outside of ticketing stations. These buses will eventually take them to the U.S., which is how recent scenes of thousands of Haitians trying to get into the U.S. came to be.

Parts of our country are already very poor. Leave Martha’s Vineyard sometime, and you’ll discover that. America could be on the brink of getting much poorer. This is the last thing we need. And it was preventable, easily preventable. The U.S. holds tremendous sway over the Mexican economy. With a single phone call, Joe Biden could make sure that the Mexican government sent these migrants back where they came from. But Biden hasn’t called to do that. And he hasn’t because he wants them here, in the United States. So they’re coming. He did this on purpose.

Thousands of Haitians have swarmed the small town of Del Rio, Texas. As of this morning, there were close to 7,000 so-called “family units” under the bridge there. More than 300 of them included pregnant women. All of these migrants, says the Biden administration, will be allowed into the United States, no questions asked. The children born here will instantly become American citizens. None of these people, you should know, will undergo any kind of background check, like the background check you endure when you try to buy a .12 gauge, according to your Constitutional rights. None of them will be forced to abide by vaccine mandates. You need the shot to work as a nurse or for the sanitation department, or anywhere, but you don’t need a shot to come to our country illegally at the request of the Biden administration.

Virtually none of these migrants will ever be deported. Of the more than 3,000 illegal migrants processed in Del Rio on Sunday, only 327 were supposedly deported to Haiti, all of them single men and women. We haven’t, by the way, confirmed that. That’s just the claim. But even the official claim tells us more than 90% of these Haitians got effective amnesty immediately. They got on government buses to resettle in what was until recently your country. On Monday, Haitians on one of those buses revolted and took control of the vehicle. “They did break out of the bus, and they did escape,” one official told the Washington Examiner.

Do things seem out of control? Well, that’s because they are. Just a few hours ago, the head of DHS, the man in charge of homeland security, explained to the United States Congress that, in fact, he has no idea how many foreign nationals are being resettled in American neighborhoods. And he didn’t seem bothered to admit that.

SEN. RON JOHNSON: How many people are being returned? How many people are being detained? How many people are being dispersed to all parts around America?

MAYORKAS: Uhh Senator I would be pleased to provide you with that data.

JOHNSON: I want them now, why don’t you have that information now? MAYORKAS: Senator I do not have that data.

JOHNSON: Why not? Why don’t you have that basic information?

MAYORKAS: Senator I want to be accurate.

Because he doesn’t care. That’s why he doesn’t have the information. He doesn’t care. There’s nothing you can do about it. There’s nothing Ron Johnson, despite his best and noble efforts, can do about it.

KATIE PAVLICH: BORDER AGENTS HAVE BEEN SMEARED BY WHITE HOUSE

So how could you defend this? If you believed in, let’s say, law, how would you defend what’s happening? Well, you couldn’t. There are illegal aliens, they’re not refugees. They are breaking federal law with the help of the federal government. How is that OK? No one in the Democratic Party bothers to explain how it’s ok. Instead, they deflect. They denounce anyone who asks and calls that person — can you guess? Here’s Ilhan Omar:

REP. ILHAN OMAR (D-MN):  What we have seen was cruel, inhumane, and a violation of domestic laws and international laws. … We owe Haitians the right thing of allowing them to seek asylum here. … When it comes to our immigration policy, for so many years, cruelty has been very much embedded in it. There is obviously systematic racism at play here.

Oh yeah. So it’s systematic racism to point out law-breaking by foreign nationals, says the lady who married her own brother in order to scam American immigration law. Now, somehow, Ilhan Omar is a “lawmaker” and she’s calling you a racist if you don’t like the fact that as a lawmaker, she’s openly subverting the laws of the country that rescued her from a refugee camp in Kenya. Right. That’s the new America.

And it’s not just Ilhan Omar that’s saying it. Here’s the top Democrat in the U.S. Senate:

SCHUMER: Images of Haitian migrants being hit with whips and other forms of physical violence is completely unacceptable. … Right now I’m told there are 4 flights scheduled to deport these asylum seekers back to a country that cannot receive them. Such a decision defies common sense and common decency.  … So I urge President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas to immediately put a stop to these expulsions.

These people are such liars. So here you have Chuck Schumer claiming there are, “images of Haitian migrants being hit with whips.” Well, that’s a distressing claim. Really? Where are these images? We checked and we couldn’t find a single picture like that. Instead, we saw Border Patrol officers using reins to control their horses. Horses have reins. Reins are not whips. Though, if you live in DuPont Circle, it’s possible you don’t know the difference:

GEOFF BENNETT, MSNBC:  We saw that image of at least one border patrol agent using a whip and effectively trying to lasso some of the migrants.

JOY REID, MSNBC: I was not aware that whips which come from the slave era, slavery era, were part of the package that we issue to any sort of law enforcement or government-sanctioned personnel.

BRIANNA KEILAR, CNN: Disturbing new video and images taken at the border that appear to show law enforcement using aggressive tactics to confront migrants.

YAMICHE ALCINDOR, PBS: What they`re seeing is despicable, disgusting, cruel. Those are the words that I`ve been hearing from activists that I`ve been talking to.

CHRIS CUOMO: As an image, to me, it does smack of a bygone era, of slavery.

It’s “slavery” to ride a horse through a crowd of people trying to invade our country. That guy went to Yale Law School, in case you’re wondering if the system is legitimate.

Chris Cuomo rarely gets the credit he deserves for being the single dumbest person on cable news. He makes Don L’Mon look like a particle physicist. But the Biden administration is nothing if not attentive to CNN. They write the script. So the DHS secretary accused his own officers of “weaponizing” their horses:

MAYORKAS: One cannot weaponize a horse to aggressively attack a child. That is unacceptable. That is not what our policies and our training require. Please understand, let me be quite clear, that is not acceptable.

So, there’s one of the country’s top law enforcement officers explaining to the former morning Zoo girl from AM radio in Yakima, WA that he’s offended by the idea of enforcing the law, because laws are racist, but only racist when applied to foreigners who are likely to support the left’s program. Waiting under the bridge in Del Rio tonight is the Democratic Party’s future electoral majority. That’s what it really is, and that’s why they’re protected. So they can do whatiever they want.

But what about you? You’re an American. You were born here, you remember a free and egalitarian America, where the same laws applied to everyone no matter what color they were? What about you? Are you allowed this latitude? No. You’re merely in the way. Keep your nose clean, Mr. American Citizen. Don your obedience mask, get your shot, pay your taxes and shut up. You’re yesterday’s constituency. No one cares what you think. That is the message.
