“The N.R.C.C. does not get involved in primaries and isn’t going to comment on a hypothetical general election two years away,” said Chris Pack, a spokesman for the House campaign arm.

Democrats are moving to censure or reprimand the Iowa congressman, a stinging penalty. Among them were Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, the highest ranking African-American in Congress, who introduced a measure Monday night in the form of a resolution of disapproval of Mr. King’s comments and white nationalism.

Democratic leaders in the House have yet to say what they will do with the competing censure resolutions, but are inclined to allow a vote of some sort related to Mr. King’s remarks, according to one senior Democratic aide.

In the interview with The Times, Mr. King also reflected on the record number of minorities and women in the new Democratic-controlled House. “You could look over there and think the Democratic Party is no country for white men,” he said.

Mr. King’s hard-line immigration policies and demeaning comments about Hispanics foreshadowed Mr. Trump’s nativist rhetoric in his 2016 campaign, in his two years in the White House and during the government shutdown over a border wall. The president once boasted to Mr. King that he raised more money for him than anyone else, Mr. King recalled in the Times article, which traced how the Iowa congressman helped write the playbook for white identity politics that dominate the Republican Party under Mr. Trump.

He has already drawn one serious primary opponent, state senator Randy Feenstra, for the 2020 campaign and some high-profile Republicans have indicated they will not embrace his re-election.

“It does open the door for other individuals to take a look,” Gov. Kim Reynolds of Iowa said in a television interview last week of Mr. King’s closer-than-expected victory last year.

“MURIENDO POR CRUZAR,” AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCREASING NUMBER OF IMMIGRANT DEATHS ALONG THE BORDER, THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 3 AT 6 P.M./5 C

Carmen Dominicci and Neida Sandoval present the Telemundo and The Weather Channel co-production

Miami – July 31, 2014 – Telemundo presents “Muriendo por Cruzar”, a documentary that investigates why increasing numbers of immigrants are dying while trying to cross the US-Mexican border near the city of Falfurrias, Texas, this Sunday, August 3 at 6PM/5 C.  The Telemundo and The Weather Channel co-production, presented by Noticias Telemundo journalists Carmen Dominicci and Neida Sandoval, reveals the obstacles immigrants face once they cross into US territory, including extreme weather conditions, as they try to evade the border patrol.  “Muriendo por Cruzar” is part of Noticias Telemundo’s special coverage of the crisis on the border and immigration reform.

“‘Muriendo por Cruzar’” dares to ask questions that reveal the actual conditions undocumented immigrants face as they try to start a new life in the United States,” said Alina Falcón, Telemundo’s Executive Vice President for News and Alternative Programming.  “Our collaboration with The Weather Channel was very productive. They have a unique expertise in covering the impact of weather on people’s lives, as we do in covering immigration reform and the border crisis. The result is a compelling documentary that exposes a harrowing reality.”

“Muriendo por Cruzar” is the first co-production by Telemundo and The Weather Channel.  Both networks are part of NBCUniversal.

Its max sustained winds were 60 mph with higher gusts as it moves toward the northwest near 15 mph.

This general motion is expected to continue through Monday, followed by a turn toward the north-northwest on Tuesday.

On the forecast track, the center of Elsa will approach south-central Cuba late Sunday night and early Monday.  Elsa is expected to move across central and western Cuba and head toward the Florida Straits on Monday, and pass near the Florida Keys early Tuesday.

Elsa is then forecast to move near or over portions of the west coast of Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Some strengthening is expected before Elsa moves over Cuba, followed by some weakening while the center moves over land. Slight restrengthening is possible after Elsa moves over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles from the center.

SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT:

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for:

  • The Cuban provinces of Camaguey, Granma, and Las Tunas.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • The Cuban provinces of Camaguey, Granma, Guantanamo, Holguin, Las Tunas, Santiago de Cuba, Ciego de Avila, Sancti Spiritus, Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Mayabeque, and Havana
  • The Florida Keys from Craig Key westward to the Dry Tortugas

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for:

  • West coast of Florida from Bonita Beach to the Suwannee River

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for:

  • Cayman Brac and Little Cayman
  • The Cuban province of Artemisa

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area.  A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous.

A Storm Surge Watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, in the indicated locations during the next 48 hours.

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area.

Interests elsewhere in the Florida peninsula should monitor the progress of Elsa. Additional watches and warnings will likely be required Sunday night or early Monday.

WIND: Tropical storm conditions are expected in portions of Jamaica Sunday.  Tropical storm conditions are expected and hurricane conditions are possible in portions of eastern and central Cuba later Sunday and Sunday night.  Tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area in the Florida Keys by late Monday.  Tropical storm conditions are possible in the watch areas in the Cayman Islands by Sunday night, and in the upper Florida Keys and the southwest coast of Florida by Monday night.

STORM SURGE: A storm surge will raise water levels above normal tide levels by as much as the following amounts in areas of onshore flow within the hurricane watch and warning areas…

  • Southern coast of Cuba – 3 to 5 feet

The combination of a storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.  The water could reach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated areas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide:

  • Bonita Beach to Suwannee River including Tampa Bay – 2 to 4 feet
  • Flamingo to Bonita Beach – 1 to 3 feet
  • Ocean Reef to Dry Tortugas including Florida Bay – 1 to 2 feet

Surge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances.

RAINFALL: Across portions of southern Haiti and Jamaica, storm total rainfall of 4 to 8 inches with isolated total amounts of 15 inches are expected through Sunday. This rain may lead to scattered flash flooding and mudslides, some of which could be significant.

Across portions of Cuba Sunday into Monday, rainfall of 5 to 10 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches is expected. This will result in significant flash flooding and mudslides.

Across the Cayman Islands Sunday into Monday, rainfall of 3 to 5 inches is expected. This rain may lead to scattered flash flooding.

Rainfall from Elsa will impact portions of the Florida Keys and Florida Peninsula Monday through Wednesday. Amounts of 2 to 4 inches with localized maximum amounts up to 6 inches will be possible, which may result in isolated flash, urban, and minor river flooding.

TORNADOES: A couple of tornadoes are possible across southern Florida Monday afternoon and Monday night into Tuesday.

Attorney General William Barr is expected to release a redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report in the coming days and conservative attorney George Conway says there’s one key phrase to look for.

In his summary of the findings, Barr claimed Mueller found no evidence of collusion between Russia and President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. He wrote:

“As the report states: ‘[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.’”

But Conway ― husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway ― shared a tweet from former prosecutor and CNN legal analyst Elie Honig that pointed out there was more to that quote:

Conway has been a fierce Trump critic despite his wife’s role at the highest levels of the administration. Last month, the president called him a “total loser” on Twitter and Conway fired back with:

President Trump’s new executive order giving the attorney general broad authority to declassify government secrets threatens to expose U.S. intelligence sources and could distort the FBI and CIA’s roles in investigating Russian interference in the 2016 elections, current and former U.S. officials said.

On Thursday, Trump allowed Attorney General William P. Barr to declassify information he finds during his review of what the White House called “surveillance activities during the 2016 Presidential election.”

Trump has long complained that the U.S. government engaged in illegal “spying” on his campaign, alleging without evidence that his phones were tapped and that American officials conspired with British counterparts in an effort to undermine his bid for the White House.

It appeared unprecedented to give an official who is not in charge of an intelligence agency the power to reveal its secrets. Current and former intelligence officials said they were concerned that Barr could selectively declassify information that paints the intelligence agencies and the FBI in a bad light without giving a complete picture of their efforts in 2016.

Officials are also concerned about the possible compromise of intelligence sources, including those deep inside the Russian government.

Ordinarily, any review of intelligence activities would be done by the Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats. But in giving that authority to Barr, the president has turned to someone he perceives as a loyalist and who has already said that he thinks the government spied on the Trump campaign.

“This is a complete slap in the face to the director of national intelligence,” said James Baker, the former FBI general counsel. “So why is the attorney general doing the investigation? Probably because the president trusts the attorney general more,” said Baker, now a director at the R Street Institute, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington.

Trump has never considered Coats a close or effective adviser, and earlier this year administration officials said they thought the president might fire him.

Michael Morell, a former CIA deputy director, called it “potentially dangerous” to let Barr decide what to declassify, because “the DNI is in the best position to judge the damage to intelligence sources and methods.”

“This is yet another destruction of norms that weakens our intelligence community,” said Morell, now the host of the Intelligence Matters podcast. “It is yet another step that will raise questions among our allies and partners about whether to share sensitive intelligence with us.”

Trump told reporters Friday that the Russia probe was “an attempted coup or an attempted takedown of the president of the United States.” He said he hoped Barr would investigate several foreign countries, including two of the United States’ closest allies.

“I hope he looks at the U.K. and I hope he looks at Australia and I hope he looks at Ukraine,” Trump said. “I hope he looks at everything, because there was a hoax that was perpetrated on our country.”

Others questioned whether Barr would take intelligence officials’ advice or act on his own when deciding what he might make public.

“The part of this order that I find the most troubling says that the attorney general should consult with intelligence community elements on declassification ‘to the extent he deems it practicable,’ ” said Robert Litt, who is a former general counsel for the office of the director of national intelligence and is now with the law firm Morrison & Foerster. “He apparently doesn’t have to consult with them if he thinks that would be impracticable.”

In a statement, Coats signaled that he expected Barr and the agencies to work together.

“Much like we have with other investigations and reviews, the Intelligence Community will provide the Department of Justice all of the appropriate information for its review of intelligence activities related to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election,” Coats said. “As part of that process, I am confident that the Attorney General will work with the IC in accordance with the long-established standards to protect highly-sensitive classified information that, if publicly released, would put our national security at risk.”

A senior official said Barr has expressed concerns privately that the CIA may not have done much to try to use its own source networks in Russia to figure out whether allegations in a document written by British former intelligence officer Christopher Steele were accurate.

Trump and his allies in Congress have seized on the document, often called “the dossier,” as evidence that the Obama administration built an investigation of Trump predicated on unsubstantiated and salacious claims.

A former senior CIA official said the dossier played no role in an intelligence community assessment, released in January 2017, that concluded Russia tried to help Trump win.

“First, the CIA was falsely accused of using the dossier in the [assessment], and once people finally realized they did not use it, now the CIA is being criticized for not investigating the dossier,” said the former official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

“It is not the CIA’s job to investigate a document that was in the hands of the FBI and floating around the media,” the former official said. “The CIA was focused on trying to identify what the Russians were doing to interfere in our election. The FBI is who was focused on counterintelligence concerns with respect to U.S. persons.”

Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III found that the FBI began an investigation into potential coordination between Russia and Trump campaign associates in July 2016, after an Australian diplomat told U.S. officials that a Trump adviser claimed to know about incriminating information Russia possessed about Hillary Clinton. Earlier that month, emails that Russian government hackers stole from the Democratic National Committee had been published by WikiLeaks.

Republican lawmakers have previously demanded information about the FBI investigation that has revealed the identity of an informant and led to the partial disclosure of an application for surveillance of a former Trump campaign aide, Carter Page. Those disclosures came after lengthy negotiations between Justice Department officials and members of Congress.

Now, Barr has the authority to declassify such information on his own.

“This extraordinary assignment and the reaction it has provoked shows how far we have moved from historical norms,” said David Kris, a former head of the national security division at the Justice Department and the founder of Culper Partners, a consulting firm. “Since the mid-1970s, the country has expected the attorney general to help oversee and enforce a system of intelligence under law, appropriately respectful of privacy and rigorously apolitical.

“Now, because of the president’s relentless efforts to politicize law enforcement, many observers fear that the attorney general is a threat to apolitical intelligence under law.”

Threatening drastic action against Mexico, President Donald Trump declared he is likely to shut down America’s southern border next week unless Mexican authorities immediately halt all illegal immigration. The president, who also cut U.S. aid to three Central American nations whose citizens are fleeing north, emphasized “I am not kidding around” about closing the border, even though such a severe move could hit the economies of both countries.

“It could mean all trade” with Mexico, Trump said when questioned on Friday by reporters in Florida. “We will close it for a long time.”

Though Trump has previously threatened to close the border and has not followed through, his administration moved to cut direct aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. The State Department said in a statement that it will suspend 2017 and 2018 payments to the trio of nations that have been home to some of the migrant caravans that have marched through Mexico to the U.S. border.

Trump has been promising for more than two years to build a long, impenetrable wall along the border to stop illegal immigration, though Congress has been reluctant to provide the money he needs. In the meantime, he has repeatedly threatened to close the border, but this time, with a new surge of migrants heading north , he gave a definite timetable.

A substantial closure could have an especially heavy impact on cross-border communities from San Diego to South Texas, as well as supermarkets that sell Mexican produce, factories that rely on imported parts, and other businesses across the U.S.

The U.S. and Mexico trade about $1.7 billion in goods daily, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which said closing the border would be “an unmitigated economic debacle” that would threaten 5 million American jobs.

Trump tweeted Friday morning, “If Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States through our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week.”

He didn’t qualify his threat with “or large sections,” stating: “There is a very good likelihood I’ll be closing the border next week, and that is just fine with me.”

He said several times that it would be “so easy” for Mexican authorities to stop immigrants passing through their country and trying to enter the U.S. illegally, “but they just take our money and ‘talk.'” The president, with support from conservative media, has made the large caravans symbols of the United States’ immigration problem.

A group of House Democrats visiting El Salvador denounced the administration’s decision to cut aid to the region.

“As we visit El Salvador evaluating the importance of U.S. assistance to Central America to address the root causes of family and child migration, we are extremely disappointed to learn that President Trump intends to cut off aid to the region,” said the statement from five lawmakers, including Rep. Eliot L. Engel of New York, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee.. “The President’s approach is entirely counterproductive.”

Short of a widespread shutdown, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said the U.S. might close designated ports of entry to re-deploy staff to help process parents and children. Ports of entry are official crossing points that are used by residents and commercial vehicles. Many people who cross the border illegally ultimately request asylum under U.S. law, which does not require asylum seekers to enter at an official crossing.

“If we have to close ports to take care of all of the numbers who are coming, we will do that,” Nielsen said. “So it’s on the table, but what we’re doing is a very structured process based on operational needs.”

Trump’s latest declaration came after Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his country was doing its part to fight migrant smuggling. Criminal networks charge thousands of dollars a person to move migrants through Mexico, increasingly in large groups toward remote sections of the border.

“We want to have a good relationship with the government of the United States,” Lopez Obrador said Friday. He added: “We are going to continue helping so that the migratory flow, those who pass through our country, do so according to the law, in an orderly way.”

Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s foreign relations secretary, tweeted that his country “doesn’t act based on threats” and is “the best neighbor” the U.S. could have.

Customs and Border Protection commissioner Kevin McAleenan said Wednesday that 750 border inspectors would be reassigned to deal with the growing number of migrant families.

In Florida, Trump was also asked about the two migrant children who died in U.S. custody in December. Is the administration equipped to handle sick children who are detained?

“I think that it has been very well stated that we have done a fantastic job,” he said, defending Border Patrol efforts to help the children.

Trump said that in one of the cases “the father gave the child no water for a long period of time,” although an autopsy released Friday made no mention of dehydration.

“It was a very tough situation and that trek up, that’s a long hard trek,” he said. “It’s a horrible situation. But Mexico could stop it.”

Democratic and Republican lawmakers have fought over Trump’s contention that there is a “crisis” at the border, particularly amid his push for a border wall. He claims a wall would solve immigration problems, though it wouldn’t keep out families who cross at official points so they can surrender and be detained.

The Department of Homeland Security wants the authority to detain families for longer and more quickly deport children from Central America who arrive at the border on their own. The department argues those policy changes would stop families from trying to enter the U.S.

Alejandra Mier y Teran, executive director of the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce in San Diego, said the mere threat of border closures sends the wrong message to businesses in Mexico and may eventually scare companies into turning to Asia for their supply chains.

“I think the impact would be absolutely devastating on so many fronts,” said Mier y Teran, whose members rely on the Otay Mesa crossing to bring televisions, medical devices and a wide range of products to the U.S. “In terms of a long-term effect, it’s basically shooting yourself in your foot. It’s sending out a message to other countries that, ‘Don’t come because our borders may not work at any time.’ That is extremely scary and dangerous.”

US$18.000

Two American teenagers have been implicated in an Italian policeman’s murder and are being held pending formal charges, Italy’s Carabinieri police force said Saturday.

The two, both 19 years old, “confessed their deeds” after an Italian paramilitary policeman was fatally stabbed in Rome on Friday while investigating the theft of a bag with a cellphone. Elder Finnegan Lee and Christian Gabriel Natale Hjorth are being detained for aggravated murder and attempted extortion, correspondent Seth Doane reports.

A 35-year-old newlywed Carabinieri officer, Mario Rega, was stabbed to death on a Rome street early Friday morning. The Carabinieri said their investigation reveals that shortly before the murder, the two young men stole a backpack from an Italian man, and then threatened him during a phone call that they would not return the backpack unless they were given 100 euros and a gram of cocaine.

The murder happened a few meters away from a police station and in front of the Italian Court of Cassation.

The man reported the incident to the Carabinieri, who came to the meeting to stop the criminals. But a scuffle unfolded, and the Carabinieri officer was stabbed to death.

Law enforcement found the Americans in their hotel room at Le Méridien Visconti, ready to leave Italy. Police say they searched the room and found the murder weapon – a “knife of considerable size,” hidden behind a ceiling panel.

Rome police officer Mario Rega was stabbed to death early Friday.

Populist politicians have taken to social media today railing against “foreign animals” being allowed in Italy.

Rega, the slain officer, was from Somma Vesuviana, Italy. He did volunteer work with the poor, accompanied sick people to Catholic shrines, and brought meals to the homeless at Rome’s main station. His funeral on Monday will be at the same church where he was married just 43 days ago.

The two Americans are reportedly from California. A lawyer for one of the men was spotted arriving at Regina Coeli, the Rome jail where they are being held.

A preliminary hearing is being held to determine whether to formally charge them.

São Paulo – Foreign direct investment (FDI) from Middle Eastern countries increased by 65% in 2013 from 2012, according to the World Investment Report 2014 disclosed this Tuesday (24th) by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad). The result was boosted by the Gulf Cooperation Council member nations, group consisting of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Oman. The FDI, as a general rule, are resources applied to productive sectors of the economy.

According to the organization, these countries have high level international reserves of hard currency. They are traditional producers and exporters of oil, gas and oil products, and therefore have large liquidity in dollar. Each member has increased foreign investments, but, according to the Unctad, Qatar stands out as it has increased fourfold the amount, and Kuwait, which has increased it by 159%.

The report adds that the resources originated in the region should increase in the future. On the other hand, the perspectives for the block as an investment destination are not bright, given the political uncertainties surrounding Middle East.

Last year, the flow of FDI for the nations in the region declined for the fifth consecutive year. The total amount posted was US$ 44 billion, a decline of 9% when compared to 2012, according to the Unctad. “High and persistent regional tensions continue to increase political uncertainty and hold back foreign direct investors,” said the organization on a communiqué.

There are, however, differences between the countries. Investment flow to Iraq, for instance, amounted to US$ 2.9 billion in 2013, an increase of 20% from 2012. In the Emirates, the inflow of resources reached US$ 10.5 billion, an increase of 9% in the same comparison. This has positioned the country as the second FDI recipient in the region last year, only behind Turkey.

Investments in Saudi Arabia dropped by 24% to $ 9.3 billion. This has repositioned the country from the second to third largest FDI recipients in Middle East.

Jordan’s flow has increased, while Lebanon’s and Kuwait’s decreased.

In North Africa, FDI flow stood at US$ 15.5 billion in 2013, down 7% from the previous year. The Unctad, however, points out that the overall level seen is relatively high and investors are expected to return.

Egypt remains as the main destination of investments in the region, in spite of a 19% decline to US$ 5.6 billion from last year. Other North African nations, however, received more resources than in 2012. Morocco and Sudan, for instance, attracted US$ 3 billion each.

Global flow

According to the Unctad, the global flow of foreign direct investment reached US$ 1.45 trillion last year, an increase of 9% from 2012. The organization estimates the total to reach US$ 1.6 trillion in 2014, US$ 1.75 trillion in 2015 and US$ 1.85 trillion in 2016. The projections are still below the record of US$ 2 trillion reached in 2007, before the international financial crisis.

In the years following the crisis, the international flow of direct investments was pushed by emerging countries, and last year these nations received US$ 778 billion, a record value equivalent to 54% of the world’s total.

In the next years, however, developed nations should resume receiving more resources. The Unctad forecasts that these countries’ share should amount to 52% of the total in 2016, after standing below 40% in 2012 and 2013.

Investments in developing countries, however, should reach a higher level in the next years.

Brazil

In Latin America, the FDI flow reached US$ 182 billion in 2013, up 6% from 2012. The increase was driven by Central America Central and the Caribbean.

Brazil, the main destination in the region, received US$ 64 billion, down 2% from the previous year. However the Unctad said that some sectors, such as the primary sector, auto, electronic and beverage industries, have actually received more resources. The organization pointed out the growth potential of the Brazilian auto industry, with new investments announced and under way.

The 2013 result, however, moved Brazil from fourth to fifth position among the nations with highest inflow of FDI. The country is behind the United States, China, Russia and Hong Kong. Russia, on the other hand, moved from the seventh to the third position.

Other recent polls have shown the first question vote within two or three percentage points, so the eight-percentage-point lead in this poll is surely a welcome sign for the governor.

The other very encouraging development for Newsom is that the partisan enthusiasm gap appears to be closing. Previously, Republicans were far more engaged with the recall and likelier to cast ballots, but in this poll, the party enthusiasm figures were similar.

83% of Republicans said they already sent in their ballots or were likely/certain to vote, and 81% of Democrats said the same. The previous SurveyUSA/San Diego Union-Tribune poll found that 84% Republicans were likely or certain to vote (ballots had not been sent out yet) compared to just 62% of Democrats who said the same.

The poll also changed the way it surveys voters on the recall ballot’s second question (which candidate should replace Newsom if he is recalled?) by offering the option of leaving the question blank as the California Democratic Party has directed. The pollster also included other Democratic candidates in the survey and found that support for YouTuber Kevin Paffrath — who received 27% support in the previous SurveyUSA poll — plummets once other Democrats are on the ballot.

With these changes, the poll found that 27% of voters who plan to vote on question two are backing conservative radio host Larry Elder. The next closest candidates are Paffrath and businessman John Cox, who received 6% support apiece. No other candidate received more than 5% support.

You can check out the full poll results from SurveyUSA.

Their relatives are at war 5,000 miles away.

In the USA, though, residents who identify with their Russian heritage and those who identify with their Ukrainian heritage express strikingly similar views about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a pair of exclusive USA TODAY/Suffolk University polls finds. The two groups are united in their opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war raging on his orders.

The invasion is opposed by nearly everyone in both groups: 87% of Russian Americans and 94% of Ukrainian Americans. Those of Russian descent have a more positive view of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (72%) than they do of Putin (6%). By 9-1, they say Putin should be removed from office.

“Somebody just needs to extract him,” says Dina Sarkisova, 44, who owns a spa in San Diego and participated in the survey. Half-Russian and half-Azeri, she came to the USA as a refugee in 1990, fleeing conflict in Azerbaijan as the Soviet Union collapsed. “There’s no reasoning with him.”

São Paulo – Artifacts produced in Brazil are getting new drive for exports. The Brazilian Association of Leather Artifacts and Travel Articles Manufacturers (Abiacav) launched this month an international brand, Brasil by Bags, which will be part of their sales campaigns abroad and used as a common identity by companies participating in the exports project created by Abiacav and the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex).

Press Release

Brand brings out the colors of Brazil

The brand’s slogan is “Brasil by Bags – Welcome to a Brazil made of leather, colors and inspiration”. It synthesizes the main characteristics of artifacts made in Brazil and should work as an identity for the national product. “We are good in making leather products, above average,” stated the Brasil by Bags project manager, Paulo Kieling, noting that Brazil has excellent tanneries and works in all steps of the production chain.

“Brazil is also colorful,” he said, explaining that the brand’s colors are green, yellow and blue, like the national flag. Abiacav used different shades of green, observing the tones of the forests; the yellow for the sun, the sunset and all its nuances; blue for the beaches and sea. All of this was translated into a color sheet. Also part of the campaign is the joy of Brazilian folklore and festivities. “We decoded Brazilianity.”

To arrive at this identity, Abiacav started working in September last year. The association used as a starting point a research made in 2012 with 2,500 companies in the sector. This study helped provide a production profile, with capacity, average price, types of products. They then held meetings and discussions with the manufacturers, in order to have a strong sector representation in creating the brand. About 30 companies participated, according to Kieling.

The Brasil by Bags brand shall be used whenever Abiacav and Apex promote international events, such as the participation in trade fairs abroad. Next week, companies in the export project will travel to Colombia for a trade show, where their exhibit stand will be entirely set under the Brasil by Bags theme. There are 50 companies in the project, and they may also use the brand in their campaigns, with authorization by Abiacav. In order to do so, they have a manual with guidelines and a series of requirements to follow.

“Foreigners want products that look like Brazil,” said Kieling. The internationalization project was first started last year and the objective for the first half of this year are the markets in Colombia, United States and Italy. According to the project manager, Colombia is also a hub for other markets such as Peru, Panama and Ecuador. The United States are the greatest importer in the world in the segment and Italy is a starting point for the Eastern Europe and Middle Eastern markets.

For the project’s second phase, another two markets chosen as targets are Russia and the United Arab Emirates. According to Kieling, the aim is to reach the Arab market as a whole, through the UAE, which is also a regional hub. The segment’s exports are at around US$ 50 million per year, and the idea is to double it in one year with the exports project.

According to information from 2012, the segment produces 50 million pieces per year with revenues of US$ 3 billion. Production is concentrated mainly in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. The main article are handbags, but production is varied and includes also wallets and belts, laptop, tablet and passport cases, leather bracelets, among other things.

Over lunch at the White House, Mr. Trump, working to defend himself and shore up his support among Republicans in the face of an existential threat to his presidency, showed a group of senators a reconstructed transcript of a congratulatory phone conversation he had in April with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. He has promised repeatedly to release the document publicly, in part to counter the notion that he ever pressured Mr. Zelensky.

“He just shuffled it across the table,” Senator Kevin Cramer, Republican of North Dakota, who attended the lunch, told reporters afterward, calling the conversation “a very nice, congratulatory call.”

The president referred to the transcript repeatedly during the lunch, which also included Senators Ted Cruz of Texas, Mike Crapo of Idaho, Mike Enzi of Wyoming and Steve Daines of Montana. Then Mr. Trump offered the senators the opportunity to read the document themselves, Mr. Cramer said.

“It said ‘Congratulations, you ran a great campaign.’ ‘Oh, thank you, Mr. President, look forward to working with you,’ ” Mr. Cramer said.

Mr. Trump tried to draw attention to the call the day after the House Intelligence Committee convened the House’s first public impeachment hearing in two decades on Wednesday with testimony from William B. Taylor Jr., the top American diplomat in Ukraine, and George P. Kent, a senior State Department official responsible for policy toward the country.

Prosecutors on Friday unveiled their sentencing recommendation for former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen who has been cooperating with prosecutors conducting the Russia investigation and others.

Updated at 8:51 p.m. ET

Federal prosecutors have requested a “substantial term of imprisonment” for Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen but asked that a judge consider his cooperation with the special counsel’s Russia probe and other investigations in his sentencing.

The recommendation came from a pair of much-anticipated sentencing memos submitted by the government Friday evening. Those documents also provide new details on the “relevant and truthful” information Cohen has provided special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation into contacts between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia.

In a statement Friday night, the White House said the “government’s filings in Mr. Cohen’s case tell us nothing of value that wasn’t already known.” Press secretary Sarah Sanders continued: “Mr. Cohen has repeatedly lied and as the prosecution has pointed out to the court, Mr. Cohen is no hero.”

Cohen has pleaded guilty to financial crimes, campaign finance violations and lying to Congress. The cases were handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and Mueller’s office.

In their filing, prosecutors in New York argued against leniency for Cohen, saying he had committed four federal crimes over the course of several years.

Cohen, they say, was “motivated by personal greed,” and they argue that he “repeatedly used his power and influence for deceptive ends.”

The New York prosecutors asked a judge to impose a sentence moderately less than the potential maximum of 63 months in prison that Cohen faces. The Probation Department has recommended a 42-month term.

The campaign finance violations that Cohen pleaded guilty to in New York federal court related to so-called hush-money payments made to two women who said they had affairs with Trump. Trump has acknowledged the payments to one of the women but has denied their underlying allegations of sexual relationships.

Cohen has said those payments were directed by Trump.

Although Cohen has been cooperating with investigators in New York City and with the office of Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, he does not have a full cooperation agreement with the government.

Mueller’s office, in a separate filing, did not take a position on what sentence Cohen should receive when he appears before a judge next week in New York City.

Mueller’s filing did, however, outline Cohen’s help in the Russia investigation. It said that over the course of seven meetings with investigators, he has provided new information about contacts between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russians, including outreach as early as November 2015 from people seeking to arrange meetings between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The meeting did not take place.

Cohen has also provided information about “certain discrete Russia-related matters core” to the special counsel’s investigation. Mueller’s filing says he obtained that information “by virtue of his regular contact with Company executives during the campaign,” which appears to be a reference to the Trump Organization.

And finally, the special counsel’s team says Cohen gave them information about his contacts with people connected to the White House, as well as providing detail about how his false statements to Congress were put together.

Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about negotiations between Trump’s business and powerful Russians about a possible deal for a Trump Tower in Moscow, a building that ultimately was never built.

Cohen initially told Congress that the talks had stopped by January 2016. Actually, he said in his guilty plea, they continued well into the campaign, past the point at which Trump became the Republican front-runner.

The crafting of that narrative was a “deliberate effort to use his lies as a way to set the tone and shape the course of the hearings in an effort to stymie the inquiries,” the special counsel’s office said.

Cohen wanted to obscure from Congress and the public that if the project had been completed, Trump’s company “could have received hundreds of millions of dollars from Russian sources in licensing fees and other revenues,” prosecutors wrote.

They continued: “The fact that Cohen continued to work on the project and discuss it with [Trump] well into the campaign was material to the ongoing congressional and [special counsel] investigations, particularly because it occurred at a time of sustained efforts by the Russian government to interfere with the U.S. presidential election.”

Mueller’s office has been tasked with investigating whether anyone in Trump’s campaign conspired with the Russians who were waging those “active measures” against the United States and the West.

Trump says his campaign had nothing to do with the Russian election interference and has denounced Mueller’s investigation as a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.”

Trump repeated his criticism again on Friday and said on Twitter that his attorneys have already begun work on a rebuttal to Mueller in case the special counsel’s report is damaging to Trump and becomes public.

The Trump camp also has focused its criticism on Cohen, with Trump’s attorney calling Cohen “a liar” who is making up stories to persuade the government to ease his sentence.

The president has acknowledged “lightly” looking into a Trump Tower project in Moscow but said that doing so broke no law and that he was perfectly within his rights to continue to operate his real estate business at the same time his presidential campaign was picking up steam.

Multiple hurricanes ripped through Mississippi on Sunday, blowing the roofs off homes, felling trees and tearing down power lines in the city of Tupelo and elsewhere.

Images shared on social media showed trees pulled out from their roots by the enormous twister, which was moving at 45mph, which also left a Tupelo gas station in tatters.

Footage captured by residents revealed the size of the cloud tunnel, which dwarfed nearby homes and brought high winds that shook street lights.

‘Emergency crews are currently assessing the degree of damage,’ the mayor’s office said in a statement on Facebook, urging people to stay in their homes.

‘Please do not get out and drive. It is dangerous – there are reports that power lines are down in the roads,’ it said.
