President Trump has indicated that he wants to make replacing Obamacare a key issue in the 2020 campaign, with a vote on a new plan to be held following the election, assuming Republicans take back full control of Washington. The problem: Republicans have already fooled voters with that message too many times.

Whatever your preferred adage, Abraham Lincoln‘s about not being able to fool all the people all the time or the “fool me twice” warning, recent political history will provide a significant obstacle to any attempt by Trump or Republicans to run on replacing Obamacare.

Republicans ran on repealing and replacing Obamacare in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016. Yet, they kept moving the goalposts as they accumulated power. When Republicans took over the House in 2010, they said nothing could be done without also controlling the Senate. When they gained control of the Senate in 2014, they said they couldn’t do anything until they also had the White House. Yet, even when they entered 2017 with unified control of Washington, they failed to deliver.

At the time, I called it the biggest broken promise in political history. Try to think of another example of a pledge to voters made in four consecutive election cycles, and not just by a few candidates — by an entire party, including those seeking office at the federal, state, and local level.

The reason why Republicans failed is, at its core, the same reason I have been shouting about since 2008: They don’t care about the details of healthcare policy enough to resolve their differences and unify around any given plan. The only times Republicans can unify is in opposition to Democratic proposals to expand the role of government when they are out of power. This was the case in 1993 and 1994 when they fought the Clinton administration’s push for national healthcare, and then again with Obamacare.

Republicans will be able to score points in 2020 by running against efforts to impose a socialist health insurance scheme on the United States, which is currently being branded as “Medicare for all.” They might also be able to make some headway if they have specific plans to address specific concerns about Obamacare. For instance, they can explain in real terms how Obamacare’s regulations drive up premiums and restrict choice, and how they could address those concerns with specific policy changes.

But if Trump and Republicans insist again of speaking vaguely about getting rid of Obamacare and replacing it with some mythical great plan, they will face a skeptical public that isn’t likely to be fooled again.

Sophomore year was trash. Junior year was trash.

Maybe senior year would hold some promise, said Leeaisa Adams, a 16-year-old Ecorse High School student, standing outside the school on Tuesday, the first day back.

For Ecorse students, much of last school year was spent online, an atmosphere that’s just not the same as in-person school, where Leeiasa’s friends surround her.

“It’s just the environment,” she said of returning.

Back-to-school this year feels like a fragile dance: More students are back in person and many desperately need the kind of attention they can get only from face-to-face classes. But the delta variant still hangs over Michigan: Schools are reporting new cases every day, triggering anxiety and debates over masks and how to respond to inevitable school cases.

It’s also unclear whether this year could lead to a repeat of last: Dozens of students quarantined at a time, with some districts switching back to virtual school at times.

Based on new Michigan Department of Health and Human Services guidance released Wednesday, it’s likely Michigan will not see scores of students quarantining.

There’s a lot at stake this year, as many educators fear students have fallen behind academically and are struggling emotionally. At Ecorse, Principal Michael Barclay darted from a hallway to outside to the gym as students started to file in.

“It’s very hard to build a relationship when you’re virtual,” he said. “They log in, then check out.”

Dubai – The world’s leading meat processing company, Brazil’s JBS is keen on increasing its presence in the Middle East. This Wednesday (26th), at the Gulfood fair in Dubai, BS global chairman Wesley Batista told ANBA that the company is looking to increase the share of poultry exports in its overall revenues, and within this industry the Middle East is a priority. The region is Brazil’s premier chicken export target.

He said JBS plans on increasing its presence in the region over the next few years. In quarter three, 2013, the company posted R$ 24.2 billion in revenues. Export revenues stood at US$ 3 billion, and sales to the Middle East fetched US$ 265 million.

“There is no question that we have a tremendous focus on this region as concerns the company’s poultry sales expansion plan. The Middle East is a priority to us. We want to expand our presence in the region, to build our brand and to sell more product. We do no plan on operating locally, but rather to increase our sales and invest in our brands,” said Batista.

The businessman acknowledged the fact that another Brazil-based company, BRF, which owns of brands Sadia and Perdigão, is strong and well-established in the Middle East, but he does not believe the competitor’s being present will get in the way of his plans. “Sadia has been here for many years now, and they are quite strong in the Middle East. [BRF] is the leading Brazilian company in the Middle East, but we can grow too, and BRF is not our biggest challenge in the region. There is room for us to grow,” he said.

One of the company’s brands is Seara, whose products are on display at JBS’ Gulfood stand, and which was acquired last year from the meat company Marfrig. Other items in the company’s portfolio which are being offered to Arabs are the brands Swift, Friboi, Maturatta, Cabana Las Lillas, Pilgrim’s, Gold Kist Farms, Frangosul, LeBon, Pena Branca, Rezende, and Fiesta.

According to Batista, poultry sales to the Middle East and North Africa are on the way up, and should remain so for the next few months. On the other hand, beef sales have dropped because the Gulf’s leading buyer, Saudi Arabia, has embargoed imports of the product from Brazil.

In late 2012, the Brazilian government announced that an animal that died in the state of Paraná, in 2010, carried the causative agent of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, aka “mad cow disease,” although the animal did not develop the condition, and died from unrelated causes.

Several companies, including Saudi, banned imports of Brazilian beef. Most of them have reversed the decision, but not the Saudis. The Brazilian and Saudi governments are in talks to resume sales.

The executive believes now is the time to step up poultry exports, even though there are no set targets with regard to market share or brand presence. he said he wants his company to have a strong presence in the leading Middle Eastern markets, especially Saudi and Egypt.

Batista also said the Gulfood is a “very good” fair, considering the visibility it affords, and not only in the Gulf. “This is a very good, highly relevant fair, because Dubai is in the ‘middle of the world,’ and as such it attracts clients from emerging countries in Asia, like China and India, as well as European ones.”

Years after Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election prompted investigations, President Trump asked Vladimir Putin not to do it again in 2020.
USA TODAY

OSAKA, Japan – President Donald Trump expressed exasperation with the media in a conversation with Vladimir Putin on Friday and spoke approvingly of the fact that the Russian president does not have the same problems with the media that he has.

The president’s remarks drew blowback on social media from critics who noted that journalists in Russia have been killed.

“Fake news,” Trump said during a meeting with Putin at the G-20 summit in Japan as journalists filled into the room to cover the leaders’ remarks. “You don’t have this problem with Russia, We have. You don’t have it.”

Putin responded in English, according to a raw video feed of the exchange.

“Yes, yes,” he said. “We have, too. The same.”

Trump has for years blasted U.S. media as “the enemy of the people.” Still, the praise for the Russian president on the point was a remarkable comment for a U.S. president. More than three dozen journalists have been murdered in Russia since 1992, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

No meddling: At G20, Trump tells Putin playfully: ‘Don’t meddle in the election.’

Trump made the comments on the one-year anniversary of a shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, in which five were killed.

Minutes after the exchange, Trump and Putin joked about Russian meddling in the 2016 election. When a reporter asked if the president would raise that issue during their meeting, Trump turned to Putin and wagged a finger while smiling.

“Don’t meddle in the election, president,” Trump said in a joking manner.

When an interpreter translated Trump’s “request,” Putin laughed.

GLASGOW, Scotland — Climate activist Greta Thunberg said Friday that the COP26 climate summit is a failure, lambasting the U.N.-brokered talks for turning into a public relations exercise.

“It is not a secret that COP26 is a failure. It should be obvious that we cannot solve the crisis with the same methods that got us into it in the first place,” Thunberg said.

“The COP has turned into a PR event, where leaders are giving beautiful speeches and announcing fancy commitments and targets, while behind the curtains governments of the Global North countries are still refusing to take any drastic climate action.”

She was speaking on stage shortly after a strike organized by “Fridays For Future” saw thousands march 1.6 miles from Kelvingrove Park to George Park in Glasgow’s city center — less than 2 miles from where the COP26 event is being held.

The U.K. is presiding over COP26 through to Nov. 12, a major climate event regarded as one of the most important diplomatic meetings in history.

It has yielded some positive developments, including pledges to end and reverse deforestation, a deal to cut methane emission levels by 30% by 2030 and new commitments to phase out coal power.

However, experts harbor deep concerns about whether countries and companies can keep the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal alive. This critically important temperature threshold refers to the aspirational target of the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement.

Thunberg said COP26 had been described as “the most exclusionary COP ever,” saying those at the sharp end of the climate crisis remain unheard. She added that the event could be considered a “two-week-long celebration of business as usual and blah, blah, blah.”

A COP26 spokesperson said in a statement given to CNBC: “The UK is committed to hosting an inclusive COP.”

“Ensuring that the voices of those most affected by climate change are heard is a priority for the COP26 Presidency, and if we are to deliver for our planet, we need all countries and civil society to bring their ideas and ambition to Glasgow,” they added.

Policymakers and business leaders are under immense pressure to meet the demands of the climate emergency at COP26. Yet, even as many publicly acknowledge the necessity of transitioning to a low-carbon society, hopes of limiting global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius are quickly deteriorating.

Climate scientists have repeatedly stressed that the best weapon to tackle rising global temperatures is to cut greenhouse gas emissions — fast.

Thunberg was catapulted to fame for skipping school every Friday to hold a weekly vigil outside the Swedish Parliament in 2018. It sparked an international wave of school strikes, with millions of children taking part in rallies around the world.

“Once again we are faced with another COP event. How many more of these should they hold until they realize that their inactions are destroying the planet?” Vanessa Nakate, a climate activist from Uganda, said at the same event on Friday.

“Today we shall continue to fight on, everywhere we can. We cannot give up now. We need to continue holding leaders accountable for their actions. We cannot keep quiet about climate injustice,” she added.

‘Change is not going to come from inside there’

Speaking at a protest outside of the COP26 complex earlier this week, Thunberg once again slammed world leaders for not doing enough to meet the demands of the climate emergency.

“This COP26 is so far just like the previous COPs — and that has led us nowhere,” Thunberg said on Monday as she addressed climate activists.

“Inside COP, there are just politicians and people in power pretending to take our future seriously,” she said. “Change is not going to come from inside there, that is not leadership. This is leadership, this is what leadership looks like.”

She had previously voiced her frustration over climate inaction at the Youth4Climate summit in Milan, Italy in late September.

“Net zero by 2050. Blah, blah, blah. Net zero. Blah, blah, blah. Climate neutral. Blah, blah, blah. This is all we hear from our so-called leaders. Words that sound great but so far have led to no action. Our hopes and dreams drown in their empty words and promises,” Thunberg said at the time.

“Siempre estuve a derecho”, relata.

“You don’t have to wonder what kind of governor Terry will be because you know what a great governor he was,” Biden said. “It wasn’t just because of what he promised. It’s what he delivered.”

Biden’s speech then turned into a wide-ranging rebuke of the Republican candidate, Glenn Youngkin, and, ultimately, a rebuke of Donald Trump.

“But how well do you know Terry’s opponent?” Biden said. “Remember this: I ran against Donald Trump. And Terry is running against an acolyte of Donald Trump.”

Biden dug in, telling the crowd that Youngkin wouldn’t “allow” Trump to campaign for him.

“What’s he hiding? Is he embarrassed?” the president said, amplifying his voice.

Biden’s rant hit Trump on everything from his claims of election fraud, the pandemic and the Jan. 6 insurrection, to the former president’s recent attacks on former Secretary of State Colin Powell following his death. He lambasted Youngkin, who has recently tried to distance himself from the former president, for standing by Trump.

One of Biden’s sharpest attacks against Youngkin came toward the end of his speech, when he said extremism could come in many forms. The president said it could arrive in a mob-driven assault on the U.S. Capitol.

Then again, Biden added of Youngkin, “it can come in a smile and a fleece vest.”

Biden said next to nothing about the negotiations on his signature social welfare and infrastructure legislation happening just across the Potomac, instead diving into issues that have defined the governor’s race in the closing days. Before he took the stage, McAuliffe aides passed out books by the late Toni Morrison, after Youngkin in an ad this week featured a woman who had tried to have Morrison’s novel “Beloved” — which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1988 — banned in public schools. Later, Biden noted that his wife, first lady Jill Biden, had traveled to Princeton University to interview the author, dismissing Youngkin as a know-nothing.

McAuliffe didn’t shy away from amplifying this message when he addressed the crowd ahead of Biden.

“Glenn Youngkin is promoting banning books by one of America’s most prominent Black authors,” McAuliffe said, before adding that it “bothers” him that Youngkin uses education to divide the state.

Youngkin’s zeroing in on education could in part explain the tightening race, the second-most-important topic to Virginians as they decide whom to vote for on Nov. 2, following jobs and the economy. Just last week, a poll from Monmouth University showed the candidates deadlocked, with both at 46 percent support among registered voters.

The president’s quick stop in Arlington also comes as he faces alarming poll numbers in Virginia and nationwide, with a recent Monmouth poll putting him at a 43 percent job approval rating. (He still had high support among Democrats, with 84 percent approval and plus-10 favorability in Northern Virginia.)

Virginia isn’t a loss Democrats want to explain. With the face-off between McAuliffe and Youngkin just days away, the president and the party are leaning into these early elections as a referendum on the presidency and a glimpse into challenging congressional races in 2022.

Over the weekend, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, Jaime Harrison, and other party officials touted Democratic investments in Virginia, as well as visits from Biden, the first lady and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“We’re all in,” Harrison said at a Richmond rally for McAuliffe over the weekend. “Virginia is very important; we want to make sure that we turn the vote out.”

Biden’s out-front approach is a break from Barack Obama, whose team distanced the former president from the Democratic gubernatorial campaigns in 2009 and 2013. Biden’s move could backfire if Youngkin succeeds, giving Republicans more fuel to criticize the White House in upcoming elections.

Virginia’s off-year elections don’t always predict the future. McAuliffe, for example, won in 2013, defying the state’s tendency of electing a governor from the party that isn’t in the White House. Still, Biden projected a sense of urgency on Tuesday night as he talked about the importance of the gubernatorial election for Virginia, and the rest of the country.

“Virginia, show up,” the president said. “Show up like you did for Barack and me. Show up like you did for me and Kamala. Show up for a proven leader like Terry McAuliffe. Show up for democracy. For Virginia. For the United States of America.”

Incredible GoPro footage takes you inside the gunfire-heavy raid that ended drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s six months on the run.

The video, obtained from Mexican authorities, looks as if it’s from an action movie. The camera follows the armed men as they storm the house, unleash grenades and bullets, and search room to room.

The Friday raid was called “Operation Black Swan,” according to the Mexican show “Primero Noticias.” Authorities decided to launch the raid Thursday after they got a tip about where Guzman was sleeping, the show reported.

Seventeen elite unit Mexican Marines launched their assault on the house in the city of Los Mochis at 4:40 a.m., “Primero Noticias” said.

They were met by about one dozen well-armed guards inside who were prepared for a fight, the show said.

The Marines moved from room to room, clearing the house. Upstairs they found two men in one room and found two women on the floor of a bathroom. All were captured, “Primero Noticias” said.

After 15 minutes, the Marines controlled the entire house, according to “Primero Noticias.”

In the end, five guards were killed and two men and two women were detained. One of the women was the same cook Guzman had with him when he was detained a couple years ago, according to “Primero Noticias.”

Eventually the marines determined that the only bedroom on the first floor was Guzman’s and they began pounding on the walls and moving furniture, finding hidden doors, the show said.

His room had a king-sized bed, bags from fashionable clothing stores, bread and cookie wrappers, and medicine including injectable testosterone, syringes, antibiotics and cough syrups, the show said. The two-story house had four bedrooms and five bathrooms. There were flat-screen TVs and Internet connection throughout the house, according to “Primero Noticias.”

The Marines eventually found a hidden passageway behind a mirror, with a handle hidden in the light fixture. The handle opened a secret door, leading down into the escape tunnel, the show explained.

The escape tunnel was fully lit and led to an access door for the city sewage system, “Primero Noticias” said, adding that Guzman had at least a 20-minute head start on the Marines.

The address where Guzman was captured had been monitored for a month, Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez has said. According to Gomez, Guzman and his lieutenant escaped through that drainage system.

“Primero Noticias” said it obtained surveillance footage showing Guzman and his lieutenant emerging from the manhole cover, where they then stole two cars to flee, the show said.

Guzman was finally caught when he and the lieutenant were stopped on a highway by Mexican Federal Police, the show said.

Authorities took them to a motel to wait for reinforcement. The men were then taken to Los Mochis airport and transfered to Mexico City.

Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is escorted by soldiers and marines to a waiting helicopter, at a federal hangar in Mexico City, Jan. 8, 2016.

Guzman is now back in prison as his lawyers fight his extradition to the U.S.

The drug kingpin escaped from the Altiplano prison near Mexico City on July 11, launching an active manhunt. When guards realized that he was missing from his cell, they found a ventilated tunnel and exit had been constructed in the bathtub inside Guzman’s cell. The tunnel extended for about a mile underground and featured an adapted motorcycle on rails that officials believe was used to transport the tools used to create the tunnel, Monte Alejandro Rubido, the head of the Mexican national security commission, said in July.

Guzman had been sent there after he was arrested in February 2014. He spent more than 10 years on the run after escaping from a different prison in 2001. It’s unclear exactly how he had escaped, but he did receive help from prison guards who were prosecuted and convicted.

Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, was once described by the U.S. Treasury as “the most powerful drug trafficker in the world.” The Sinaloa cartel allegedly uses elaborate tunnels for drug trafficking and has been estimated to be responsible for 25 percent of all illegal drugs that enter the U.S. through Mexico.

Media analysts sounded the alarm over an airline pilot who reportedly told passengers “Let’s go Brandon,” accusing him of substance abuse or comparing his actions to terrorism.

A pilot on a Southwest flight from Houston to Albuquerque signed off his announcement for passengers by saying, “Let’s Go Brandon,” according to An Associated Press journalist who was reportedly on the flight. The phrase has become codeword for a more profanity-laced message for President Joe Biden in response to an animated audience at the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama earlier this month. As racecar driver Brandon Brown was chatting about his victory, the crowd began chanting, “F— Joe Biden.” But the reporter interviewing Brown instead reported that the crowd was chanting “Let’s go Brandon.”

“TFW you’re trying to go on vacation and then the pilot says the very thing you’re working on over the loud speaker and you have to try to get him comment but then almost get removed from plane,” the AP’s Colleen Long wrote Saturday.

Long’s critics mocked her for being so offended.

“AP stands for Activist Progressives,” Gov. Ron DeSantis’ press secretary Christian Pushaw responded.

But several other pundits shared their outrage over the pilot’s purported message, with some pledging to avoid the airline in future.

GOP CONGRESSMAN ENDS FLOOR SPEECH WITH ‘LET’S GO, BRANDON’

“Vulgarity stand-in from ⁦@SouthwestAir cockpit,” Washington Post editor Cathleen Decker wrote.

“Its pilots now giving the ‘f*ck you Biden’ or ‘let’s go Brandon’ GOP line during the flight,” Will Bunch, an opinion columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, tweeted. “I’ve always loved flying Southwest. Don’t plan on doing it ever again.”

A few CNN analysts added to the onslaught. Juliette Kayyem, for instance, suggested substance abuse may account for the pilot’s conduct.

“Yes pilot conduct. His words reflect possibility of anger management or substance abuse. It is worth asking,” Kayyem tweeted.

Social media users hit Kayyem for the “baseless accusation.”

“Your words reflect the possibility of emotional instability,” Pushaw said.

If you actually believe this, you have credibility issues,” Chicago attorney Ari Cohn added.

But the swiftest backlash was saved for CNN analysts Asha Rangappa, who appeared to compare the Southwest pilot to an ISIS sympathizer.

“As an experiment, I’d love for an @SouthwestAir pilot to say ‘Long live ISIS’ before taking off. My guess is that 1) the plane would be immediately grounded; 2) the pilot fired; and 3) a statement issued by the airline within a matter of hours,” she tweeted.

The Washington Examiner’s Jerry Dunleavy, conservative radio host Mark Davis, and New York Post columnist Karol Markowicz were among those who told Rangappa that one of these things is not like the others.

The phrase “Let’s Go Brandon” has also popped at other sporting events across the country. Amid the rise in the phrase’s popularity, NPR published a piece that told readers it “is being used in conservative circles in place of a more vulgar message directed at President Biden.”

Several of the same media critics mocked the outlet for publishing such “hard-hitting journalism” and for being “late to the party.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was ripped as “financially illiterate” Friday for her role in killing the Amazon deal at the same Midtown conference where she was a featured speaker a couple of hours earlier.

“The people campaigning against the Amazon campus are financially illiterate,” Tracy Maitland, president and chief investment officer of Advent Capital Management, said during a panel discussion at the National Action Network conference in Midtown.

Afterwards Maitland told The Post, “This was a disgrace. I partially blame AOC for the loss of Amazon. She doesn’t know what she doesn’t know. That’s scary. We have to make sure she’s better educated or vote her out of office.”

Maitland said the misimpression created by Ocasio-Cortez and other Amazon critics was that the state and city were giving the company a blank $3 billion check.

The reality, he said, is that Amazon was only getting tax credits based on the number jobs created. Amazon and New York officials estimated a new headquarters in Queens would generate up $30 billion in tax revenues as well as 25,000 jobs.

Another panelist, CUNY chairman Bill Thompson, said that job opportunities were “snatched away” from the predominately black and Latino students of the City University.

We were at the table talking to Amazon on how students could get jobs … those opportunities were snatched away,” said Thompson, the former city comptroller.

“Those students look like us … We’re talking thousands of high-paying jobs. It was a disappointment from a CUNY perspective.”

Thompson and Maitland spoke on a panel about “The Black Economic Agenda: Driving Capital into the Hands of Black Asset managers and Housing Developers” in the Empire Room of the Sheraton New York.

A couple of hours earlier, Ocasio-Cortez addressed the conference’s main audience in the ballroom across the hall and spoke mainly about inequality. Amazon’s sudden decision to withdraw from the Queens — and bring 25,000 high-paying jobs — didn’t come up in that venue.

But former Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford Jr., now a New York City businessman, raised it on his panel.

“Creating 25,000 jobs is always a positive thing,” he said. “There’s a multiplier effect.”

Sharpton opened the panel discussion but left before the Ocasio-Cortez backlash erupted.

He said he supports capitalism — as long as there is a level playing field and “access to capital” for minorities.

“We’re not asking for favors. We could also play baseball before Jackie Robinson but we couldn’t get on the field,” he said, referring to the first black major league baseball player.

He also said he spoke to Ocasio-Cortez about the need to “see people” in the minority business community to discuss their concerns.

Jesse Watters slammed the Biden administration for Thursday’s terrorist attack at the Kabul airport on “Watters’ World,” calling it the “worst day of Joe Biden’s presidency.”

JESSE WATTERS: Thursday was by far the worst day of Joe Biden’s presidency – an avoidable tragedy, and the deadliest day for American forces in Afghanistan in 10 years. Biden botched the Afghan withdrawal, and now innocent people are paying the price. Biden refused to extend the August 31 deadline to get Americans out of Afghanistan, and U.S. troops have now begun withdrawing from Kabul, with 350 Americans still trying to get out. And that’s just according to the State Department, a department with a pretty bad track record.

The Taliban’s blocking Americans from getting to the airport, and Biden’s boxed in, letting it happen. We’re working with the Taliban now, Biden saying we may have even given the Taliban a list of names to let through checkpoints, or a kill list, as most people fear.

We’re stranding Americans behind enemy lines, plain and simple. But the administration refuses to use that word because they’re worried about messaging. Biden’s making it seem easy, like Americans can just head to the Kabul airport and get on the next flight…Joe’s not standing behind Americans. And just a few days ago, Biden wanted credit for all of this. Everything Biden and this administration have said about how this is going to go has turned out to be wrong.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he won’t fire White House counselor Kellyanne Conway after a federal watchdog agency recommended her removal for repeatedly violating a law that limits political activity by government workers.

Trump tells Fox & Friends that he was briefed on the Office of Special Counsel investigation Thursday and says “it looks to me like they’re trying to take away her right of free speech and that’s just not fair.”

OSC, which is unrelated to special counsel Robert Mueller’s office, said in a letter to Trump that Conway has been a “repeat offender” of the Hatch Act by disparaging Democratic presidential candidates while speaking in her official capacity during television interviews and on social media.

Trump says of Conway, “she’s got to have a right of responding to questions.”

After months of anticipation, Israel’s attorney general has told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he is preparing to indict him on corruption charges.

It’s a major blow to the long-serving premier and Trump ally, though not a final decision on an indictment. Netanyahu will still have a chance to hold off any indictment during a court hearing. And in the meantime, he remains in office and seeks reelection in April.

If Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit decides to press charges, which expert expect he will do, it would be the first time a sitting prime minister in Israel has been indicted.

The announcement shakes up Israeli politics just six weeks before voters decide whether Netanyahu gets another term. He has been serving as prime minister for a decade.

Mandelblit has been studying three different corruption cases and has outlined them in a document over 50 pages long sent to Netanyahu’s lawyers, Israeli media reports. The details of the accusations are well-known. Israeli police recommended months ago that Netanyahu be indicted for all three sets of allegations.

First, he’s facing a possible breach of trust and fraud charges— for accepting cigars and champagne and expensive gifts from wealthy businessmen, including Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan.

Second, he’s facing more possible breach of trust and fraud charges charge — for trying to strike a deal with a newspaper publisher to advance legislation to help the publisher’s business, in exchange for giving Netanyahu positive media coverage. The deal never went through.

The final case is the most serious one because the charges the attorney general is considering include bribery. Netanyahu allegedly approved a lucrative company merger for a telecoms businessman, and in exchange the businessman’s news website gave Netanyahu favorable coverage.

Though Netanyahu will receive a hearing prior to a formal indictment, the authority will remain with the attorney general to decide. A final indictment could take a year or more. The hearing date has not yet been made public.

Netanyahu has called the bribery charge “absurd.” He’s decried the probe as interference in the upcoming Israeli elections, and described the accusations as a “house of cards.”

He’s accused Mandelblit of caving to pressure from the left and the left-wing media to rush to announce charges before the elections. The embattled prime minister is expected to address the Israeli public on Thursday evening.

This saga has divided voters. A recent poll from Haifa University shows about half of the public doesn’t have much trust in the attorney general. At the same time, another poll from the Israeli television show Meet the Press said that 64 percent of Israelis wanted Mandelblit to announce his decision prior to the election, Haaretz reported.

The Justice Ministry said in a statement that “the Attorney General has reached his decision after thoroughly examining the evidence collected during the investigations conducted by the Israel Police and the Israel Securities Authority, and after considering the detailed opinions provided by the State Attorney’s Office. Furthermore, the Attorney General has conducted a series of lengthy discussions with senior members of the State Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Attorney General.”

Netanyahu has signaled that if indicted, he would remain in office and fight in court.

The non-partisan Israel Democracy Institute called on Netanyahu to “carefully consider” what’s best for Israel.

“Is it best for the country to be governed by a leader charged with serious criminal acts of corruption, or is it best for him to resign and focus on proving his innocence in the courts?” the institute said in a statement.

It warned about the “serious potential damage to the public’s trust in the state’s institutions caused by a situation in which the government is headed by an individual charged with criminal misconduct involving abuse of power.”

In the upcoming vote, his base will still likely support him — indeed, in a Haifa University survey, 65 percent of his party’s supporters said they believe law enforcement is trying to force Netanyahu out. That party, Likud, said Thursday that this announcement represented a “political witch hunt” aiming at toppling Netanyahu’s government.

Other voters, though, may question his ability to lead the country amid an uncertain political future as he faces these charges.

Netanyahu has been the front-runner in the upcoming elections, but if his poll numbers slip — even slightly — it could tip the scales. He would need to build a governing coalition with other parties in order to stay in power, and with likely criminal charges hanging over his head, it’s unclear if other parties will be willing to stay by his side.

There’s also a new centrist list led by a former army general – who is strong in the polls and who could win instead.

The Taliban push on major cities comes as the group continues to squeeze much smaller provincial capitals in areas long contested by militants. In Helmand, a province that has been one of the least stable in Afghanistan for years, fighting intensified last week, heightening fears that the province’s capital, Lashkar Gah, would fall. Taliban fighters have pushed into the city and are steadily closing in on the central government compound.

São Paulo – Brazilian companies with innovative, socially impactful, environmentally positive projects are eligible to register for the “2nd Round of Impact Investing” sponsored by the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).

The participating companies will present their projects and products to potential venture capital and private equity investors. These investors acquire minority stakes in private companies to foster their development. Registration has been extended until next Friday (5th).

The investment round is an opportunity for companies seeking capital to introduce themselves to potential investors. Other similar events have been held for services- and export-oriented enterprises.

According to the international business analyst at Apex’s Executive Investment arm, Gilberto Socoloski Junior, the initiative arose out of interest from both enterprises and foreign investors. “There is an appetite for the establishment of investment funds that tend to funnel money into companies that work on the socio-environmental [sector] in emerging countries,” he said.

Socoloski said there is potential for up to US$ 40 billion to be invested into this type of business in Brazil. As cases in point, he mentioned companies that provide microcredit to development in impoverished areas, or ones that work on urban solid waste management.

Companies must be based in Brazil to apply. Both Brazilian and international investment funsd are eligible. The primary focus, however, is on attracting foreigners. According to Socoloski, investors from the United States and Europe are often most interested in projects of this type.

Selection process

To apply, interested companies must fill in a form on the Apex website, outlining their innovative processes or products. Socoloski and two other Apex professionals will select as many as 20 Brazilian companies on the strength of these forms.

Companies that qualify to the second stage of the selection will face an “examination board” in São Paulo on September 22nd and 23rd. Delegates will have 15 minutes to introduce their companies, processes, products and business plans, plus another 15 minutes to respond to inquiries. Following this stage, 12 companies will be shortlisted to introduce themselves to potential investors. The meeting with investors will also take place in São Paulo, on December 3rd.

From the time they are shortlisted until the presentation date, the businesses will receive coaching from Apex technicians to help them hone in on their most important features when it comes to being targeted by investment. At the meeting with investors, the delegates will only have 15 minutes to showcase their projects.

Apex does not intervene in the negotiations once the companies and funds begin interacting. According to Socoloski, negotiations usually take from a year and a half to two years to come to fruition. The companies will be charged no fees, but will have to meet their own costs during the process.

Registration for investors is open until the end of October.
