Former Vice President Joe Biden‘s campaign strategy thus far has been to go directly after Trump — perhaps more so than any other high-profile 2020 Democrat — and it appears to be getting under the president’s skin.

This was evident on Wednesday morning as President Donald Trump went on a retweeting frenzy after the International Association of Firefighters, a key labor union, endorsed Biden.

In an early morning tweet on Wednesday, Trump said, “I’ve done more for Firefighters than this dues sucking union will ever do, and I get paid ZERO!”

Subsequently, Trump retweeted about 60 people who said they were firefighters and that they supported him over the former vice president.

While Trump is usually freewheeling on Twitter, the cascade of retweets was a notable departure from his typical social-media style.

Indeed, Biden has been in the 2020 race for less than a week, and his tactic of taking Trump head-on has already produced a series of reactions from the president.

The escalating 2020 battle between Biden and Trump began the day the former vice president formally launched his campaign.

Biden jumped into the 2020 race on Thursday via a video that zeroed in on the August 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Trump’s controversial response to the deadly event.

Trump blamed “many sides” for the violence at the rally, which was attended by neo-Nazis and groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. The president also said there were “very fine people on both sides.”

“With those words, the President of the United States assigned a moral equivalence between those spreading hate and those with the courage to stand against it. And in that moment, I knew the threat to this nation was unlike any I’d ever seen in my lifetime,” Biden said in his announcement video.

Trump mocked Biden as “Sleepy Joe” in a tweet on the day of his campaign launch and doubled down on his response to Charlottesville while talking to reporters later that day.

The fight didn’t stop there. Ahead of Biden’s campaign-kick-off event in Pittsburgh on Monday, for example, Trump tweeted, “The Media (Fake News) is pushing Sleepy Joe hard. Funny, I’m only here because of Biden & Obama. They didn’t do the job and now you have Trump, who is getting it done — big time!”

Biden followed up by ripping into the president at his rally.

“Donald Trump is the only president who has decided not to represent the entire country. We need a president who will work for all Americans,” Biden said.

“Everybody knows who Donald Trump is,” Biden added. “We have to choose hope over fear, unity over division and, maybe most importantly, truth over lies.”

Biden also continued with his attacks on Trump’s response to Charlottesville on Tuesday, referring to the president’s characterization of the events as “nonsense.”

Other top-ranked 2020 Democratic candidates, such as Sen. Bernie Sanders, have slammed Trump multiple times along the 2020 campaign trail but have largely prioritized focusing on policy.

But Biden’s campaign so far has been typified by anti-Trump rhetoric, which has clearly triggered a full-throated response from the president. And the former vice president has taken notice.

At a rally in Iowa City, Iowa, on Wednesday, Biden said, “I understand the president’s been tweeting a lot about me this morning. I wonder why the hell he’s doing that? I’m going to be the object of his attention for a while.”

McCready’s decision, first announced in an interview with Charlotte television station WSOC, comes as North Carolina is dealing with an unfolding scandal over absentee ballots. Election officials are trying to determine why many were never mailed in in certain counties that likely would have favored the Democrats in the election, and three people have told BuzzFeed News and WSOC that they were hired to collect such absentee votes, which would be a violation of state law.

The man accused of a shooting rampage that left 50 people dead at two New Zealand mosques has fired his lawyer and wants to represent himself at trial, the court-appointed lawyer said.

Richard Peters was assigned to represent Brenton Tarrant at Tarrant’s brief court hearing Saturday. Tarrant fired Peters and may want to use the trial to give more publicity to his views, Peters told the New Zealand Herald.

Peters said the trial judge must decide how much racist rhetoric will be allowed. Tarrant released a manifesto minutes before Friday’s attack.

Peters said Tarrant expressed no condolences or regret.

“What did seem apparent to me is he seemed quite clear and lucid, whereas this may seem like very irrational behavior,” Peters told the Herald. “He didn’t appear to me to be facing any challenges or mental impairment, other than holding fairly extreme views.”

Tarrant, an Australian, has been charged with one count of murder, but more charges are likely. He has not sought bail and faces a hearing April 5.

The death toll stood at 50 with dozens more wounded in Tarrant’s assault on the Al Noor and Linwood mosques during Friday prayers in the city of Christchurch.

Tarrant, 28, livestreamed the rampage via helmet cam on Facebook and Twitter. The video shows the gunman saying “Let’s get this party started” before walking in the front door of the Al Noor mosque and opening fire. After three minutes, he returns to his vehicle for more ammunition and goes back into the mosque and continues shooting.

More than 40 people died at the Al Noor site. Tarrant then sped off, bound for the the Linwood location where the carnage continued. The video does not include the Linwood attack.

Facebook said Sunday that it removed or blocked from the social media site 1.5 million videos of a gunman’s rampage. Twitter, YouTube and other social media sites also scrambled to take down video of the carnage.

A Christchurch gun shop said Monday it sold the guns to Tarrant online. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern vowed to begin discussions Monday with her Cabinet aimed at strengthening her nation’s gun laws.

An attack last week against former Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke in his Connecticut prison cell reflects “the mentality out there … that people won’t rest until he is either given a life sentence or killed in prison,” his lead trial attorney said Thursday.

Daniel Herbert joined Van Dyke’s wife, Tiffany, in demanding to know why Van Dyke was transferred to an out-of-state federal prison and why he was placed in the general inmate population, where he was beaten in the face within days of his arrival.

“They put my husband in a setting to be harmed because of the fact that he was a white man who harmed a black gentleman in the line of duty,” Tiffany Van Dyke said at a news conference. “He is a police officer who was convicted for doing his job, and at the basic minimum they were supposed to keep him safe.”

Attorneys stressed the danger Van Dyke faces in custody — just days after prosecutors filed a legal petition before the state Supreme Court that, if successful, could significantly lengthen his sentence.

Billionaire Mike Bloomberg has launched a $5 million TV ad campaign as he prepares to enter the Democratic primary for president, an advertising monitoring group said Friday.

Data compiled by Advertising Analytics, which tracks ad buys throughout the 2020 election, shows that the former New York mayor has invested the seven-figure sum in over 25 markets, including in Florida, Texas, Massachusetts, California, Pennsylvania, Mississippi and Michigan.

Many of these states represent key primary contests for Democrats in the 2020 race.

In Florida, the investment is focused on West Palm Beach, the market that includes President Donald Trump’s resort Mar-a-Lago. The most expensive ad buy is in Los Angeles for just over $760,000, the company said.

The data gathering firm said the ads were booked Friday morning and will run through the end of Thanksgiving week.

A spokesman for Bloomberg did not return a request for comment on details pertaining to the ads.

The ad buys are the latest in a series of moves by Bloomberg, who has a net worth of just over $55 billion, and his team in the buildup to his likely run for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The former New York mayor filed paperwork on Thursday for a presidential run, although his spokesman said it was only procedural and did not represent some form of an announcement.

He has also filed to compete in various primaries including Alabama, Texas and Arkansas, and his aides have been hiring staff to gear up for a primary battle.

Bloomberg’s team has previously said he plans to spend over $100 million if he runs. Apart from his ambitions to run for president, the 77-year-old Bloomberg has committed $100 million to a digital ad campaign against Trump.

President Trump’s brand-new national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, will inherit a National Security Council struggling to attract talent, current and former U.S. officials tell NPR.

The National Security Council is traditionally one of the most desirable places for ambitious and talented people to work in the U.S. government, because it affords such close proximity to power. But in the Trump administration, some of the government’s brightest minds are turning down high-powered NSC assignments, and others are avoiding the place altogether.

Career foreign policy professionals increasingly fear that joining the NSC, which is part of the White House, will taint them as political operatives.

“There is a school of thought that it can be risky for your career — sometimes being there puts you in a position where you have to say no to ambassadors and other senior officials, and they may remember that when you return,” said one senior foreign policy official who turned down an offer to serve at the NSC.

It’s a stunning reversal for jobs that once offered unparalleled credentials.

Openings for temporary assignments that in previous administrations would have drawn two dozen applications and inquiries are now getting minimal interest, the officials said.

NPR interviewed 12 current and former U.S. officials with knowledge of the NSC’s challenges. Most have served both in the Trump administration and past administrations. Many declined to be publicly identified for fear it would endanger their careers and professional relationships.

“The National Security Council staff is comprised of exceptional public servants from across the U.S. Government who are working diligently to support President Trump’s highly-effective national security agenda. There is no shortage of patriotic individuals willing to work on these critical issues,” said White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham in a statement to NPR.

A senior NSC official dismissed concerns that people don’t hold the NSC in the same regard as before. He said Trump has sought to slim down the NSC, so there may not be as many opportunities. The people he knew, though, were proud of their work and extended their assignments.

While an NSC job has historically been known as a launchpad for high-flying careers, these officials tell NPR that under Trump, U.S. foreign policy has become so erratic, confrontational and politicized that many feel out of place — or worse.

Chuck Park, a career Foreign Service officer who served in the Trump administration until July, said getting an NSC job is like a “rocket ship” for your career.

An economic affairs specialist, Park, 34, had pursued an NSC position in 2015 after his third tour of duty but didn’t get it. He expected to try again after his fourth, but by then, in 2018, Park said he was too “pissed off and upset” about Trump administration policies such as family separation and the president’s rhetoric on immigration. He didn’t like what he interpreted as Trump’s defense of white nationalism and explained his resignation in an essay published by the Washington Post last month.

“I would have absolutely, wholeheartedly thrown my hat in the ring under a different president and different national security adviser,” said Park, referring to Trump’s previous national security adviser, John Bolton, whom Trump ousted on Sept. 10.

A “24/7” job

The National Security Council is the president’s main advisory body for considering national security and foreign policy matters. It also coordinates national security priorities with different U.S. government agencies.

The NSC takes top staff members from agencies across the administration, including the State Department, Defense Department, U.S. Agency for International Development and CIA, on temporary assignments.

Those one-year temporary assignments, which are often renewable, are highly coveted, and some of the officials interviewed for this story said they were surprised to learn the lengths the NSC is going to attract staff. Others told NPR that their senior managers discouraged them from accepting NSC positions.

“Going into the NSC is not an easy thing by any means,” said Fernando Cutz, who served as a senior director at the NSC in the Trump administration until last year. “You’re working all sorts of hours, essentially 24/7. You’re either on call or in the office and at times both. And you’re not getting paid any more money.”

Cutz said working at the NSC was particularly difficult under the brief tenure of Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who was under investigation for his ties to Russia. It improved under Flynn’s successor, H.R. McMaster, who ran the NSC more along the lines of past administrations by seeking input from around the federal government.

John Gans, author of White House Warriors, a book about the National Security Council, said a hamstrung NSC carries risks to foreign policy.

“The staff itself is a really critical piece of this,” said Gans. “Because the staff is a big part of the national security adviser’s strength. If he doesn’t have that sort of public reputation, deep relationships with his Cabinet colleagues or a deep relationship with the president, the staff can give the national security adviser a shot. He can get ideas. He can get intelligence. He can get muscle from them to try and drive his ideas through, outflank Cabinet secretaries, do all those kinds of things.”

Congress created the NSC through the National Security Act of 1947. The idea was to create a body within the White House to gather and study various viewpoints from the president’s cabinet and advisers, to be shared with the president. But critics charged that Bolton failed to live up to his “honest broker” role by limiting debate inside the government.

“You’re really doing it out of a love of your country, out of a sense of patriotism and out of a belief in the system. When that system isn’t necessarily working the way that it’s designed to work, that has to give you extra pause,” Cutz said. “Are you prepared to dedicate essentially your entire life to a system that isn’t going to actually respect you?”

Finding policy to fit Trump’s rhetoric

Several current and former officials described the challenge of coming up with policies that could match the president’s words.

They pointed to being pressed to find military options in Venezuela despite a near consensus among senior leaders of opposition to military action. They cited Trump’s lack of interest in intelligence information, particularly on Russia. And they also talked about Trump’s willingness to ignore advice from foreign policy professionals.

Others cited the president’s braggadocio and said his language and style haven’t helped secure foreign policy wins on trade or headed off Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Many senior-level NSC staffers are trying “either to go overseas and to ride out the administration or to find jobs in the department that are detailed to other places,” said Brett Bruen, who served as the White House director of global engagement in the Obama administration and remains in contact with NSC and State Department officials. “Basically, anything that you can get to avoid having to be in a serious policy job, which is almost a 180 from the way those jobs were looked at beforehand.”

Some of the current and former officials interviewed for this story blame Bolton for installing too many political appointees and eliminating much of the coordination with other parts of the government. A request for a comment from Bolton was declined.

But others say even before Bolton became national security adviser, Trump had already undercut the NSC’s relevance in shaping policy positions, eschewing the advice of top officials in favor of his own gut instincts.

Last week, Trump said being national security adviser is an “easy job.”

“It’s a great job. It’s great because it’s a lot of fun to work with Donald Trump,” Trump said. “And it’s very easy, actually, to work with me. You know why it’s easy? Because I make all the decisions. They don’t have to work.”

After announcing on Wednesday that O’Brien would be his new national security adviser, Trump downplayed his previous comments, saying the position is “a very important role. It’s really a role that if the president respects the person that’s the adviser, I think it really plays an important role.”

The senior NSC official said the NSC continues to attract some of the most talented people in the federal government. Staffers seek to stay away from politics. He said they are proud of the work done in the Middle East, reducing tensions with North Korea and bringing home U.S. hostages from abroad.

“People come here because they believe in the policies they work on,” the official said. “It’s not a highly political place.”

Another senior administration official who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly dismissed the concerns and said the NSC sometimes asks for volunteers and sometimes it hand-picks candidates.

Other officials who worked with Bolton said that he’s wrongly being blamed as the main problem at the NSC — and that while Bolton curtailed coordination with other parts of the government, it eased the workload and he wasn’t personally difficult.

“He wasn’t some jerk or anything like that,” said one former NSC official. “He wasn’t tough on the staff. He was very nice to all of us. He was approachable.”

Tradition of service

Like in many parts of the federal government, there’s a long tradition at the NSC of top civil servants and Foreign Service officers being dedicated to carrying out the current administration’s priorities, regardless of which party is in power.

Several officials told NPR they joined the administration because they were asked to protect U.S. national interests. Some were worried about controversial figures like former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, his deputy, K.T. McFarland, and former NSC spokesman Michael Anton, who were part of the NSC in the first months of the Trump administration.

Flynn pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI. Before joining the Trump administration, McFarland’s most recent national security experience had been as a Fox News analyst. Anton was best known as a conservative polemicist with limited past foreign policy experience.

Several Foreign Service officers told NPR they struggled with other Trump administration policies that they had no role in shaping.

“You may not be working on putting kids in cages, but you can’t get away from it,” said a former White House official who served in the Trump administration until last year. “You are literally part of the administration responsible. And if you can’t compartmentalize, it’s a very difficult emotional cross to bear.”

Some turned to professional counseling for help as they wrestled over emotions of whether they were protecting U.S. interests or enabling bad behavior.

One veteran Foreign Service officer who served under multiple administrations, including the Trump administration, said there is now an unspoken belief among some top career officials that it’s important to preserve talent for future administrations by keeping them away from assignments too closely tied to the White House.

“You’ve got a really bright-eyed, bushy-tailed person, like somebody who you know can go far in this business — you’re not going to want them to get mowed down,” the Foreign Service officer said. “And you’re going to say, ‘They know we all live to serve. But it’s really important to be around to fight another day. And you are going to carry the institution going forward. So let’s go hide you.’ “

In the past, Park, the Foreign Service officer who resigned, said NSC jobs were so prestigious that many ambitious Foreign Service officers would make a bid for an opening even if they knew that they weren’t going to get it.

“This is the kind of position where people take selfies in the Oval Office or they hang pictures of themselves in the Situation Room and display it proudly behind their desk,” he said.

But that’s not the case anymore, he said.

The greatest teacher I ever had gave me some good advice before I went to college.

“When you start college, all of your peers are roughly worth nine dollars per hour,” he told my class. “Do everything you can to increase that value in those four years, and don’t hate your classmates who increased their economic value more than you did.”

He made clear to remind us that our economic value had zero correlation with our human value. To judge people with fewer marketable skills, he said, would be to go down “jerk road.” This was my rough introduction to understanding the evils of utilitarian ethics.

Somewhere along the line, the Democratic Party has had a divorce between Kantian liberals, who understand that a social safety net ought to exist for those lacking the skills or opportunities to finance themselves, and utilitarian leftists, who view market forces themselves as fundamentally evil. No one exemplifies this break more than socialist superstar Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

I discussed the economic forces (mis)guiding this tweet earlier this week, but it’s worth considering the ethical fallacy here. Ocasio-Cortez insinuates here that the economic value of human labor ought to be tied not to market equilibrium but human value. A suboptimal airport croissant may be $7. An hour of unskilled labor may be worth $11.80 in New York, though LaGuardia is increasing its own minimum wage to $19. But the value of the human life itself has nothing to do with its economic potential or its earning power. It’s priceless.

I’ve been struggling to ascertain why Andrew Yang is so interesting. The self-described “Asian guy who likes math” provides plenty of policy wonkishness of which the 2020 race is sorely in need, but “candidate who provides actual details” or “caring about funding as much as costs” isn’t revolutionary. It took Yang’s latest interview with Wired for me to understand what fundamental truth Yang has highlighted.

When asked about the common platitude that people losing manufacturing jobs can simply learn to code, Yang responded:

To be clear, this is a liberal argument, not a conservative one. Yang’s specifically setting up the case for a $1,000 opt-in universal basic income which he dubs the “freedom dividend.” He argues that it will help those financially struggling to overcome the cognitive biases of fiscal instability and provide a baseline social safety net so that people have more flexibility in pursuing various careers.

But this is also a liberal argument, not a utilitarian one, that inadvertently diagnoses an ill that’s overtaken the insurgent wing of the Democratic Party. Two things can be true at once: People should feel obligated to increase their economic value insofar as they can sustain their own lives, and people also have an intrinsic human value that cannot be measured in dollars. Yang is effectively paving a potential neoliberal future for the Democratic Party — one which can call for increased government spending without engaging in goofy AOC economics that vilifies the free market, which has lifted more than a billion people out of poverty worldwide so far just this century, and billions more in the 20th Century, and which is the single most efficient form of allocating goods and services.

American socialists like to point to Scandinavian countries to justify increasing central planning. But Scandinavian countries rely on the free market to fund their welfare safety nets. They do not employ fundamentally centralized socialist systems with market forces on the fringes. As Veronique de Rugy pointed out late last March, the future that Ocasio-Cortez looks little like the increasingly deregulated Denmark and Sweden, and it bears little resemblance to the Norwegian petro-state either.

Ocasio-Cortez ought to listen to Yang. Yes, liberals believe in economic safety nets, but a UBI can provide it without harming the entire economy the way a $15 federal minimum wage would, especially in those states and regions with lower costs of living.

In other words, it’s a mistake for Democrats to go down “the jerk road,” and instead understand that economic value has a cap, but human value is infinite.

Nelson Teich, left, and Jair Bolsonaro during his swearing-in ceremony less than a month ago

Brazil’s health minister has resigned after less than a month in the job following disagreements over the government’s handling of the country’s escalating coronavirus crisis.

Nelson Teich had criticised a decree issued by President Jair Bolsonaro allowing gyms and beauty parlours to reopen.

However, he gave no reason for his resignation at a press conference.

His predecessor was sacked after disagreeing with Mr Bolsonaro.

The far-right president continues to oppose lockdown measures.

He has downplayed the virus as “a little flu” and has said the spread of Covid-19 is inevitable, attracting global criticism.

Brazil has recently surged past Germany and France in terms of its coronavirus caseload, becoming one of the world’s hotspots with more than 218,000 cases and a record 15,305 in the last 24 hours. The latest daily figures also showed 824 new deaths recorded, bringing the official death toll to 14,817.

Why did the minister resign?

At his news conference, Mr Teich did not reveal why he had stepped down. He just thanked President Bolsonaro for giving him the chance to serve as a minister and praised healthcare workers.

But he has clashed with the president over several aspects of how the government has dealt with the spiralling epidemic.

Mr Teich (right) clashed with the president over his handling of the crisis

He disagreed with the president’s desire to widely use chloroquine as a treatment. The drug has gained widespread attention although the World Health Organization (WHO) says there’s no definitive evidence it works.

Mr Teich also butted heads with the president over plans to open up the economy, saying last week that he was not consulted ahead of an order that paved the way for gyms, beauty salons and hairdressers to reopen.

But disagreements over how chloroquine should be used was the final straw, the Globo newspaper reported.

He is second health minister to leave the post in under a month. Luiz Henrique Mandetta was fired in April after President Bolsonaro publicly criticised him for urging people to observe social distancing and stay indoors.

To lose one health minister was awkward, but to lose two in less than a month is not only embarrassing for Jair Bolsonaro but deeply worrying for Brazil.

The country has become the latest coronavirus hotspot and rather than politicians trying to tackle it together, the pandemic has turned political and the leader of the country is failing to provide direction for a population which really needs it.

Nelson Teich didn’t give any reasons for his departure, merely saying “life is full of decisions and I decided to leave” – but he didn’t see eye-to-eye with his boss on the use of chloroquine and his health ministry was excluded this week when Jair Bolsonaro decided to include beauty salons, hairdressers and gyms as essential services.

It appears the job of health minister to Jair Bolsonaro is a thankless task at the moment – but it’s a difficult job vacancy at the worst-possible time in Brazil.

The accusations against Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman grow more disturbing by the day, as recently unsealed documents reveal that the drug lord had sex with girls as young as 13, often after drugging them, and referred to the pills as the “vitamins” that give him “life.”

The new and disturbing details were made during Guzman’s trial at the U.S. Federal Court in Brooklyn, New York on Friday. The witness, his former personal secretary Alex Cifuentes Villa, said that he would sometimes help Guzman incapacitate the girls by placing a “powdery substance” in their drinks, the New York Times reports.

Guzman’s lawyer said in a statement that the drug lord denied the allegations, which he called “extremely salacious.”

“Joaquin denies the allegations,” his lawyer, Eduardo Balarezo, said. He added that the claims “lack any corroboration and were deemed too prejudicial and unreliable to be admitted at trial.”

Balarezo also questioned the timing of the documents. “It is unfortunate that the material was publicly released just prior to the jury beginning deliberations,” he continued. The documents were unsealed by Judge Brian Cogan in response to a request by Vice Media and the New York Times.

‘EL CHAPO’ DEFENSE ASKS JURY NOT TO ‘GIVE IN’ TO DRUG LORD’S ‘MYTH’

Guzman’s former secretary Cifuentes alleged that the young girls were brought to the drug lord by a woman named only as “Comadre Maria.” She “regularly” sent photos of girls for Guzman to choose from, and would allegedly send his selections to his home in the mountains to engage in sexual activity for a fee of $5,000.

PROSECUTION RESTS IN ‘EL CHAPO’ TRIAL AFTER CALLING 56TH AND FINAL WITNESS

“Comadre Maria” was brought up another time in the trial, for her alleged role as an intermediary when Guzman reportedly paid a $100 million bribe to former Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Guzman, 61, has been on trial since November, when he was extradited to the United States to face a litany of charges. He is accused of leading the Sinaloa drug cartel, largely considered to be one of the most powerful and ruthless criminal organizations in existence.

He is facing 10 total charges, including engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, conspiracy to launder narcotics proceeds, international distribution of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other drugs, and use of firearms. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The jury begins deliberation on Monday after hearing from a total of 57 witnesses: 56 presented by the prosecution and one called by Guzman’s defense team.

He faces life in prison if found guilty.
