Television personality Dog the Bounty Hunter is joining the search for Brian Laundrie, more than 10 days since he was last seen by his family. Laundrie has been named a person of interest in the disappearance and death of his fiancée Gabby Petito.
Dog the Bounty Hunter—whose real name is Duane Chapman—specializes in locating and arresting people who have broken the terms of their bail agreements for his TV show.
Chapman’s team wrote in a statement to Newsweek, “Dog and Francie have experienced extreme loss themselves. Their hearts go out to Gabby’s family for what they’re going through and want to help bring justice for her death.”
Chapman wants anyone with information on Laundrie’s whereabouts to call him at 833-TELLDOG, and all information will be kept confidential, the statement said.
Investigators have been searching for Brian Laundrie in the Carlton Reserve near North Point, Florida, for more than a week. He was reported missing on September 17, and police believe he could survive in the swampland for months, if he’s there.
The FBI issued a federal arrest warrant for Laundrie on Wednesday, urging anyone who knows where he may be to come forward. The warrant was issued following a grand jury indictment for alleged “Use of Unauthorized Access Devices” in late August and early September.
Petito was reported missing on September 11. Her body was found last Sunday in the Spread Creek area of Wyoming. On Tuesday, the Teton County Coroner announced the manner of death to be a homicide.
Last week, Chapman shared his thoughts on the case with Newsweek, saying that “a lot of circumstances point towards him being the defendant.”
“To look at the case, so far, I haven’t got any info yet inside info. But it seemed like she was very verbal when they got into arguments, because there was people that heard her screaming at him,” Chapman told Newsweek.
He said that to find Laundrie, he would need to learn more about his background.
“He went straight home to tell his parents what happened. And then he took off. So we got to look at his background, look at his record, know, his friends, his family. He’s not an experienced runner or criminal. Suicide is a very likely possibility—and it seems like he’s kind of an outdoors kid,” he said.
He said when he searches for people, they often end up close to home.
As the search that has captivated millions of people continues, new details have emerged surrounding his disappearance. One woman claimed that she picked up Laundrie while he was hiking in Wyoming—becoming the second person to say they had given him a lift.
His family was concerned that he might hurt himself after he left home without some key items, including a wallet or cell phone.

Governor Brian Kemp discusses his bill limiting ‘Defund the Police’ efforts and reacts to Stacey Abrams’ plans to run for president.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has signed into law a bill that sets limits on the amounts by which local governments can cut police departments’ budgets, arguing the movement to “defund” police seeks “to vilify the men and women who leave their families and put their lives on the line to protect” Peach State residents.
Kemp, a Republican, signed the legislation on Friday at the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office gun range in Bethlehem, with sheriffs and police chiefs by his side. Rep. Houston Gaines, an Athens Republican and the bill’s sponsor, told Fox News on Tuesday he was “proud.”
“This important measure will ensure that the ‘defund the police’ movement doesn’t take a foothold here in Georgia and will stop radical, out-of-control local governments from slashing police budgets and putting public safety at risk,” he said in a statement to Fox News. “This National Police Week, we’re grateful here in Georgia for our men and women in law enforcement — and we back the blue.”
The law will bar local governments from cutting police department budgets beyond a certain percentage and takes effect on July 1.

Georgia is now one of the only states in the country with such law enforcement agency protections, Gaines’ office said. A similar measure has become law in Florida, while other states are considering them.
The law prohibits county governments from decreasing a police department’s annual budget by more than 5% of the previous fiscal year’s funding. But it would also carry certain parameters as to when such limits might no longer apply. For instance, it would not apply if the county’s revenue that year decreased by more than 5%, and cities and counties with fewer than 25 officers are exempt.
Atlanta and Athens-Clarke County officials debated but rejected plans to cut or redirect spending following racial injustice protests last year. The death of George Floyd launched demonstrations that were also fueled by the death of Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta and several other individuals across the country.
The measure is a rejection of arguments by protesters nationwide that minority communities are suffering from overpolicing. The critics argue that governments should spend less on law enforcement and more on social services to address problems.
But Kemp, speaking at Friday’s signing, said it was unfair to “condemn and demonize” police officers.
“This far-left movement will endanger our communities and our law enforcement officers,” he said, “and leave our most vulnerable at risk.”
Los 1.5 millones de clientes de la Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica (AEE) se quedaron sin servicio de luz esta tarde a causa de un colapso total del sistema, que provocó un apagón general.
El colapso supuestamente se debió a unas fallas en las líneas de transmisión que provocaron, a su vez, la salida de las unidades generatrices, indicó una fuente de El Nuevo Día.
Mediante comunicado de prensa, la AEE informó que se registró una avería en dos líneas transmisión de 230 mil voltios que afectan a clientes a nivel Isla.
“Al momento se investiga la situación y causas para suministrar detalles adicionales sobre el particular”, indicó la corporación pública.
Otra fuente de este diario señaló, por su parte, que el apagón provocó un fuego en el ciclo combinado del Complejo Aguirre en Salinas, que fue controlado a eso de las 5:00 p.m.
Por su parte, el presidente de la Unión de Trabajadores de la Industria Eléctrica y Riego (Utier), Ángel Figueroa Jaramillo, denunció que el apagón se debió a la falta de mantenimiento del interruptor que falló hoy. De hecho, en entrevista entrevista radial (WKAQ 580), dijo que el gremio confirmó que hace un mes se había reportado la necesidad de atender el mencionado interruptor.
Durante los pasados meses, El Nuevo Día ha reseñado una serie de eventos que reflejan una crisis operacional en la AEE a causa, principalmente, de falta de mantenimiento, que responde, a su vez, al retiro de más de 1,800 empleados.
El director de la Agencia Estatal para el Manejo de Emergencias y Administración de Desastres (Aemead), Ángel Crespo, describió el fuego como “un evento significativo”. Además, dijo que se extinguió en una hora y 20 minutos.
Las autoridades utilizaron espuma para lograr un enfriamiento más efectivo.
Añadió que ya tienen identificado el origen del fuego. Se trata de un interruptor que distribuye la energía.
Bomberos de Guayama y Salinas atendieron la emergencia.
Además, confirmó que se solicitaron dos camiones tanqueros de Caguas y Ponce para dar ayuda.
El pasado 25 de julio se suscitó un fuego en la unidad #1 de la central debido a un escape de combustible. La reparación de la unidad demoró tres semanas.
Según las fuentes, la AEE ya puso en funcionamiento varias de sus unidades de rápida respuesta (prenden en 10 minutos o menos), como las de Mayagüez.
Luis Santini Gaudier, representante del interés público en la Junta de Gobierno de la AEE indicó a través de la red social Twitter que al menos 19 pueblos se habían visto afectados, incluyendo Vieques y Culebra.

El huracán Irma tocó tierra por segunda vez en Florida a las 3:35 pm (hora del Este) en Marco Island, una población de unos 16,000 habitantes ubicada a 30 millas de Naples, en el oeste del estado. Allí se registraron ráfagas de hasta 130 millas por hora.
Mientras el ojo del huracán pasaba sobre esta población, la policía de la ciudad compartió fotos sobre la calma que precedió la llegada de los vientos de Irma, como suele ocurrir cuando su centro se desplaza por un área.
Una hora antes, con la trayectoria del huracán confirmada por los pronósticos meteorológicos, la policía pidió a la población que se resguardara en pisos altos y que no tomara agua de la llave si experimentaban repentinas bajas de presión.
Tras azotar Marco Island, Irma siguió hacia el norte y golpeó a Naples, que queda a unos 40 minutos en auto y donde ha estado lloviendo desde la noche del sábado.
“Pasadas las 3:30 pm los vientos y las lluvias se hicieron tan fuertes que por las ventanas solo se ve una mancha gris. A nosotros, que estamos resguardados en un hotel de cuatro pisos con acondicionamientos para soportar un huracán categoría cinco, nos dieron orden expresa de resguardarnos en los pasillos o en los baños, en donde mucha gente ya había dispuesto comida”, narró por teléfono el periodista de Univision Noticias Damià Bonmatí. Nadie tiene ya servicios de datos en sus celulares.

“Se sienten los vientos, se siente fuertes golpes en las paredes y el primer piso del hotel ha sido clausurado porque las lluvias empiezan a colarse por las puertas”, explica el videoperiodista Luis Velarde. “Aún tenemos electricidad porque el hotel tiene una planta, pero solo hay luz en los corredores y va a durar tan solo tres horas”, añadió.
En las calles era notorio cómo las condiciones con la cercanía del huracán cambiaron drásticamente en 15 minutos. Así lo mostraban las cámaras de CNN.
Sin embargo, como ocurrió en Marco Island, cuando el enorme ojo del huracán finalmente arribó a Naples de nuevo la calma se apoderó del ambiente.
“La paz rodeada de lo peor de la meteorología”, reportaba Bonmatí, quien explicaba que las autoridades intentaban controlar que la gente no saliera de sus casas y refugios antes la momentánea tranquilidad.
Irónicamente, muchos en Naples emprendieron una evacuación de emergencia hacia Miami, donde los últimos días hubo una orden de evacuación que afectó a más de 600,000 personas.
Según reportó el diario local Naples Daily News, el servicio de emergencia alertó a la población que lo peor vendría justo después del paso del huracán, con inundaciones que pueden alcanzar los 10 o 15 pies en la línea costera del condado de Collier y Lee.
En Collier, la compañía Florida Power & Light (FPL), uno de los principales proveedores de servicios elétricos del estado, informa de 173,380 cortes de electricidad. En el condado colidante de Lee, los cortes afectan a 171,410 clientes de FPL.
A las 4:55 pm ET el huracán Irma disminuyó a categoría 2, algo que se esperaba sucediera al desplazarse en tierra pues ya no tiene aguas cálidas que alimenten su fuerza. Casi dos horas después llegó hasta Fort Myers, donde se registraron vientos de 88 millas por hora en su aeropuerto internacional.
Entrada la noche se dirige hacia Tampa, también en la parte oeste del estado. Antes de su arribo, los pobladores detectaron un fenómeno que viene sucediendo desde este sábado tras el paso de Irma por Bahamas y este domingo después de su paso por los Cayos: el mar se retrajo varias millas y la gente salió a registrar ese extraño crecimiento de la playa.
Current and former members of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration took to the streets on Monday in a protest attended by hundreds that called out Hizzoner’s handling of recent unrest in the city.
“I feel like I am doing my job as a public servant out here today,” Cat Almonte, 28, told The Post of the decision to protest her boss.
What started as a few dozen workers — representing agencies from the Department of Health to the Department of City Planning — gathered outside City Hall early Monday to bring their grievances to de Blasio’s doorstep.
“Some of us are risking our livelihood being here, our careers,” Almonte — who formerly worked as de Blasio’s personal aide and now works for a city agency, which she declined to identify — told the crowd.
“I’m not here to just criticize the mayor. That’s easy,” continued Almonte. “I am coming from a place of deep respect to say we expect better. We are demanding radical change now.”
Among Almonte’s demands was a $1 billion reduction in NYPD funding for the coming fiscal year — representing one-sixth of the department’s budget — and the shift of that cash to services including rent relief, housing support and food assistance.
De Blasio — who on Sunday flip-flopped to vow the reallocation of an unspecified amount of funding from the NYPD to youth and social services — has felt the heat amid nationwide protests demanding justice for George Floyd, a black man who died May 25 after a white Minneapolis cop kneeled on his neck.
Looting, vandalism and clashes with cops spun off by opportunists and agitators in or around protests have only fueled the fire.
As the group left City Hall and took to the Brooklyn Bridge, their number swelled into the hundreds, many bearing signs that read “Black Lives Matter.”
“We aren’t just a group of New Yorkers who are disgruntled who have a right to be disgruntled and angry and hold the mayor accountable,” said Christopher Collins McNeil, a former staffer in the Mayor’s Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. “We are a group of people who have worked for this man, currently work for the mayor.”

Added Michael Cox, who said he formerly worked in the mayor’s office, “He [de Blasio] said he was going to stand against police injustice. … It’s not clear to us what happened.”
The group made its way over the bridge into Brooklyn before going their separate ways in Cadman Plaza, where de Blasio was jeered heavily last week at a memorial event for Floyd.
The protest coincided with several groups of current and former city staffers penning open letters of criticism to de Blasio, including from the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice.
“At the June 4 memorial service for George Floyd in Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza, Mayor de Blasio said that Mr. Floyd ‘cannot have been allowed to die in vain,’ ” that letter read in part.
“We fully agree with this sentiment. As advisors to the Mayor, we call for action and adoption of the following strategies to use this moment of protest and anger as a catalyst to create the city that New Yorkers deserve, a city where all people are recognized for their humanity.”
Among the list of demands in the letter signed by dozens of current and former staffers is the reallocation of funds from the NYPD to community groups and greater accountability for the department.
While his current and former employees took to the streets, de Blasio held a press briefing miles away at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
“I don’t know who is or who is not,” he said, referring to protesters who are or have been part of his administration. “I say to anyone who has a concern, I want to hear it, senior staff wants to hear it. … I reach out a hand to anyone who wants to do that work together.”
“This is going to put a lot of pressure on those aspects of our relationship they have control over,” Anderson, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, said Friday. “I strongly suspect we’re going to see action in parliament … that’s going to seek the curtailment if not total withdrawal of those folks.”
About 5,000 American troops are deployed to Iraq. If Baghdad asks these American forces to withdraw, it would eliminate the home base from which the U.S. has launched its fight against the Islamic State. Though the terrorist group has lost most of the territory it once held, the group recently established a small foothold in northern Iraq made up of fighters crossing the border from Syria, NBC News reported in November.
The rising tension between the U.S. and Iraq could weaken the relationship the two countries built over the past several years while working together to fight the Islamic State, which both viewed as a common enemy.
“Both sides will start to think about other enemies, [including] … each other,” said Daniel Byman, a senior fellow with the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. “Part of what brought them together is the sense that ISIS is a danger to both.”
The loss of a U.S. presence in Iraq would also affect the military’s anti-ISIS mission in Syria. When the Trump administration moved troops out of Syria last fall, forces had to rely more heavily on personnel based in neighboring Iraq to root out terrorist fighters in Syria.
“If we can’t be in Iraq, we can’t be in Syria,” Barbara Slavin, the director of the Future Iran Initiative at the Atlantic Council, said Friday, because Iraq is America’s main point from which to launch missions in Syria. She also addedthat the power void in Syria ceded by the U.S. is likely to be filled by Iran.
Turkey was also a home base for U.S. operations in Syria, but the relationship between the White House and Ankara has faced significant tension over Turkey’s growing ties with Russia, making it unlikely that Syria operations launched from Turkey will increase.
Training Iraqi soldiers to battle terrorists on their own is another important part of America’s mission in the country, and one that would also be hurt by the withdrawal of American troops. When U.S. troops left Iraq in 2011, the Iraqi military quickly deteriorated to the point that the Islamic State could grow its presence in the country. Anderson cited this when asked what would likely happen to the Iraqi military if U.S. troops were forced to leave again.
“We saw how rapidly the Iraqi military degraded in the years before the rise of ISIS, [which] contributed to ISIS’ rapid march,” he said. “The concern has always been that without continued U.S. support and training and encouragement, you would see a similar decimation of Iraqi military corps.”
It’s possible the Iraqi parliament will not kick American troops out of the country and will instead pursue a less drastic measure like a formal condemnation of the strike. Yet the relationship between the U.S. and Iraq will still suffer. Abbas Kadhim, the director of Iraq Initiative at the Atlantic Council, said the lack of cooperation will extend beyond just government-to-government relations.
“Iraq for [at least] the next year will be completely unsafe for American citizens and business and any other interests,” he told reporters. “Forget about any contracts or anything we might see on the ground.”
Diplomatic personnel in Iraq are also at risk, as evidenced by an attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad this week. While Iraqi security forces eventually intervened to stop the protest, Christopher Preble, vice president of defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute, said the response was slow. He also said Iraqi efforts to break up future incidents is likely to even get slower as Iraq fumes about the strike on its sovereign territory.
“The Iraqi government is incensed by this decision to carry out an attack on their soil,” he said. “I’m quite concerned about the safety of U.S. personnel, including civilians and diplomats, inside of Iraq.”

En las noticias más leídas del día, las autoridades cubanas le negaron la entrada a la isla al ex presidente Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, cuando se dirigía a la entrega de un premio en honor al fallecido activista Oswaldo Payá. 1. No habrá marcha atrás en la liberación de gasolinas: Peña
El presidente, Enrique Peña Nieto afirmó que no hay marcha atrás en la liberación del mercado de gasolinas.
Según el mandatario, esta liberación traerá inversiones en infraestructura y construirá un escenario muy diferente, mejor. Las inversiones esperadas son alrededor de 16,000 millones de dólares. En una reunión con un grupo de comunicadores, se refirió a lo que pasará con el precio de la gasolina: “Tendremos un mecanismo de suavización que evitará fluctuaciones muy grandes de un día para otro”.
José Antonio Meade, secretario de Hacienda, ofreció detalles y aclaró que no habrá una banda de precios, porque no hay techo ni piso. En caso de que haya una tendencia de cambio fuerte en los precios, habrá un periodo de hasta 100 días para hacer la corrección en el precio.

2. Cuba no le permite la entrada a Felipe Calderón
El día de hoy autoridades de Cuba le prohibieron la entrada a la isla al ex presidente de México, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, donde asistiría como invitado a la entrega de un premio en honor al fallecido activista Oswaldo Payá.
En su intento por viajar a Cuba, la aerolínea mexicana, Aeroméxico le comunicó al ex mandatario mexicano que la inmigración de Cuba le había emitido un comunicado en que le informaba que “el pasajero FCH no estaba autorizado para entrar a Cuba y solicitaba que no fuera documentado en vuelo AM451”. Calderón agradeció a la aerolínea sus atenciones.
El ex presidente chileno, Sebastián Piñera denunció también que el Gobierno cubano impidió a Mariana Aylwin viajar hacia la isla. “Un nuevo atropello a las libertades y derechos en Cuba. Mariana: todo nuestro apoyo”, sentenció el ex mandatario en su cuenta de Twitter.

3. Al ahorrar busque proteger su dinero de la inflación
Cuando hablamos de ahorro, en la mayoría de los mexicanos persiste cierto escepticismo hacia los instrumentos formales, a tal grado, que sólo 15.1% de la población ahorra en este tipo de productos, mientras que 61.3% pierde dinero ya sea por ahorrar parcial o totalmente en instrumentos informales, de acuerdo con la Encuesta Nacional de Inclusión Financiera 2015.
Al guardar tu dinero en instrumentos informales, pierde poder adquisitivo debido al efecto de la inflación; dicho de otra manera: por el alza de precios, puedes comprar menos con tu dinero si éste no incrementa en la misma proporción.

4. Unos 16 CEO de EU le dan el sí al impuesto fronterizo
Al menos 16 presidentes ejecutivos de empresas estadounidenses, entre las que destacan Boeing Co, Caterpillar Inc y General Electric Co, instaron al Congreso estadounidense a aprobar una amplia revisión del código tributario, incluyendo un polémico impuesto fronterizo.
Fue en una carta enviada a los líderes republicanos y demócratas del Congreso, en donde los ejecutivos dijeron que el impuesto fronterizo propuesto por los republicanos hará a los productos manufacturados en Estados Unidos más competitivos localmente y en el exterior, ya que los artículos importados enfrentarían en mismo nivel impositivo.
El presidente de la Cámara de Representantes, el republicano Paul Ryan, propuso bajar el impuesto a las ganancias corporativas a 20% desde un 35%, aplicando un tributo de 20% sobre las importaciones y excluyendo los ingresos por exportaciones de las ganancias imponibles.
Teachers and students in Los Angeles returned to their classrooms on Wednesday after a deal was reached, ending the city’s landmark teacher strike.
Though a deal was reached in Los Angeles, a similar conflict seems set to unfold in Denver as teachers there voted in favor of a strike.
The Denver teachers’ strike can legally start as of Monday, Jan. 28, after 93 percent of unionized teachers voted for the strike on Tuesday night.
“They’re striking for better pay. They’re striking for our profession. And they’re striking for Denver students,” Rob Gould, the union’s lead negotiator, said at a press conference Tuesday, according to The Denver Post.

Teachers in California’s most populous city went on strike over teacher pay, class size and funding for school support staff, among other issues.
A deal was reached Tuesday, Jan. 22, which marked the ninth day of the strike that took 30,000 teachers out of classrooms.

The contract that was reached included a 6 percent pay increase and a plan to lower class sizes over the next four years.
The Los Angeles mayor, the schools superintendent and the head of the teachers union announced at a joint news conference Tuesday that a tentative deal was reached, and the member teachers voted on it Tuesday evening, formalizing the deal.

Democratic Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly came out against President Biden’s vaccine mandate as one that is not the “most effective” or “correct” for her state.
“Yesterday, I reviewed the new vaccine mandate from the Biden Administration. While I appreciate the intention to keep people safe, a goal I share, I don’t believe this directive is the correct, or the most effective, solution for Kansas,” she said in a statement released Friday.
“States have been leading the fight against COVID-19 from the start of the pandemic. It is too late to impose a federal standard now that we have already developed systems and strategies that are tailored for our specific needs,” she continued.
Biden directed all private companies with 100 employees or more to enforce a vaccine requirement starting Jan 4.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Saturday, however, granted an emergency stay of the vaccine requirement by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said the action stops Biden “from moving forward with his unlawful overreach.”

“The president will not impose medical procedures on the American people without the checks and balances afforded by the constitution,” a statement from Landry, a Republican, said.
Biden’s vaccine mandate for businesses was hit with fierce and immediate pushback earlier this year when it was first announced.
Republicans hit back at the mandate when it was first announced in September as “unconstitutional.”

As for Kelly, she said she will “seek a resolution” on vaccine mandates that “continues to recognize the uniqueness of our state and builds on our on-going efforts to combat a once-in-a-century crisis.”
Kelly is up for reelection next year. GOP challenger Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s campaign team hit back in a statement on Kelly’s remarks, saying she has remained quiet on Biden’s vaccine mandate for two months, while Schmidt has been fighting the mandate.
“Attorney General Schmidt has been fighting Joe Biden’s mandates since the moment they were announced. After two months of silence, Laura Kelly has now voiced her concerns some 36 hours after her party suffered defeat in blue state Virginia – words accompanied by no action. Kansans are smart, and can see which candidate is acting on principle defending their livelihood and which is making a desperate political ploy to save her own job,” Schmidt’s campaign manager CJ Grover tweeted Friday.

The U.S. now has more coronavirus cases than any other country in the world, surpassing China’s total and highlighting how rapidly the virus can move through a population.
The U.S. logged more than 83,000 cases as of 8 p.m. ET Thursday, while China reported more than 81,00 infections, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
America now leading the world in coronavirus cases is striking since the U.S. population of some 330 million is just a fraction of China’s 1.4 billion people.
In China, where the epidemic started in December, almost 3,300 people have died, while in the U.S., the toll stands at around 1,200. In Italy, there have been about 8,200 deaths.
As coronavirus cases surge, business nationwide has nearly ground to a halt and the economy has soured, with major swaths of America shut down and officials urging residents to stay indoors and practice social distancing to curb the rate of infection.
Bracing for the number of new coronavirus cases to keep rising, hospitals are scrambling to acquire bed capacity and crucial medical equipment like ventilators, gloves, gowns and protective masks. Many state officials have said in the absence of additional supply, the crush of infected people who need care will far exceed resources.
Officials with the White House’s coronavirus task force have expected a sharp rise in new cases, the result of testing becoming more available throughout the country.
Yet the U.S. testing rate still falls far short of other countries grappling with the virus. For instance, South Korea’s testing rate for coronavirus is more than six times that of America’s, despite Trump’s repeated claim that the U.S. is the world leader in testing.
Testing in many parts of the U.S. has been far from smooth, as people nationwide report long waits for a test and stringent criteria for qualifying for a test.
New York has emerged as the epicenter of the pandemic. The state reported more than 37,000 infections, equaling more than half of America’s cases. The accelerating rate in New York has spilled over into neighboring New Jersey, which now has the second-highest state total in the U.S.
Deborah Birx, who is on the White House’s coronavirus task force, said on Thursday that new hot spots are forming in the counties that include Detroit and Chicago.
Millions of Americans are teleworking if they can. Many others are out of work altogether. Nearly 3.3 million have filed unemployment claims last week. Market volatility has been rocking investors for weeks. And dozens of leading economic forecasters say the virus is lurching the global economy into a recession.
Trump, meanwhile, has indicated that he would like to see the country open to business by Easter, a timeline that is much sooner than what public health experts are advising.
White House officials say updated guidelines on possibly loosening social distancing recommendations could arrive as soon as next week.
A historic $2 trillion relief package was passed by the Senate on Wednesday night with hopes to providing a jolt to a limping economy. Among the provisions of the more than 800-page bill: sending $1,200 direct payments to most American adults.
The House on Friday is poised to take up the measure and is expected to pass it. Trump has said he is ready to sign the bill into law.

Ante una escalada de la crisis entre el gobierno catalán y el de España, el líder regional Carles Puigdemont iba acudir ante el Parlament para presumiblemente anunciar su intención de convocar a elecciones para diciembre, un aparente intento por reducir las tensiones con Madrid, aunque terminó por suspender la declaratoria y después dijo que no habrá a comicios pues no existen las “garantías”. Dejó en manos del parlamento regional decidir cómo responder al que el gobierno de Mariano Rajoy ya invocó el artículo 155 de la Constitución para remover al gobierno de Cataluña por sus movidas independentistas, pedido que iba a ser debatido mañana en el senado.

Los estragos del calentamiento global y del cambio climático parecen cada vez más notorios en un mundo en el que las temporadas de huracanes se han vuelto más intensas, las sequías más extendidas y los incendios forestales más grandes.
En Europa, por ejemplo, la producción del aceite de oliva se ha dificultado debido a factores como olas de calor o plagas que duran más tiempo, mientras que los incendios en zonas como California han resultado en las últimas semanas en la desaparición de varias especies en peligro de extinción.

• El presidente brasileño Michel Temer libró ayer los cargos de corrupción que pesaban en su contra (si es que es enjuiciado por ellos, lo sería hasta dejar el cargo) después de que 251 diputados votaran a favor de descartar las acusaciones para que no avanzaran al Supremo Tribunal Federal, contra 233 que votaron para que sí lo hicieran, el ejecutivo brasileño indicó que se concentrará en intentar promover reformas económicas, como un posible cambio al sistema de jubilación que ha despertado fuertes críticas en el país.

El premio anual por la libertad de conciencia fue otorgado hoy por el Parlamento Europeo a los integrantes de la oposición venezolana, con mención particular a Julio Borges y quienes forman parte de la Asamblea Nacional, la legislatura venezolana que es el único organismo de gobierno no controlado por el chavismo, y a quienes han sido calificados como prisioneros políticos, entre ellos Leopoldo López, Yon Goicoechea y Antonio Ledezma.
El premio les fue extendido en apoyo “inquebrantable a la Asamblea Nacional, el único parlamento elegido democráticamente en Venezuela”, según el comité, en referencia a que a mediados del año se estableció la llamada Asamblea Nacional Constituyente, que quedó por encima de otros poderes, con lo que las medidas aprobadas por la Asamblea Nacional legislativa pueden ser supeditadas por un cuerpo de mayoría chavista. También hubo intentos previos por parte del Tribunal Supremo de Justicia de asumir las funciones de la legislatura.

• En el fútbol, ayer el expresidente de la asociación de fútbol guatemalteca y anteriormente juez Héctor Trujillo fue condenado a ocho meses de prisión en Estados Unidos tras admitir que aceptó sobornos y que ayudó a lavar dinero de ese modo. También deberá pagar una multa de 415.000 dólares a la Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala.
• También hay otro misterio en el seno de la FIFA como parte de la investigación de corrupción: ¿cómo fue que una empresa prácticamente desconocida se hizo con los derechos de transmisión de los mundiales de fútbol de 2018, 2022, 2026 y 2030? ¿Por qué no fue anunciado públicamente cuando obtuvo esos contratos? Mountrigi tendrá los derechos para 16 países latinoamericanos y, según una investigación de autoridades suizas y estadounidenses, los habría obtenido por medio de sobornos. Rosamaría Hernández, de diez años de edad, fue detenida esta semana por agentes migratorios cuando iba camino al hospital en una ambulancia para una cirugía de vesícula de emergencia, según su familia. Los agentes la detuvieron después de que fue dada de alta, ya que la menor había ingresado a Estados Unidos de manera ilegal cuando tenía tres meses de edad, junto con sus padres, que son indocumentados.
La situación ha causado furor ya que es muy poco común que sean detenidos menores sin papeles cuando ya se encuentran dentro de Estados Unidos; usualmente eso sucede con adultos o se detiene a los jóvenes al momento en el que cruzan la frontera o intentan hacerlo. La madre de Hernández dijo a The New York Times que habían dejado Nuevo Laredo, México, camino a Texas para que Rosamaría recibiera mejor tratamiento por su parálisis cerebral, ya que no podían costear el sistema de salud en su país de origen mientras que en Estados Unidos recibían el apoyo de Medicaid, programa para personas de escasos recursos.
No es el único caso de una migrante menor de edad que ha resultado en críticas al gobierno de Donald Trump en las últimas semanas. Una joven centroamericana, identificada como Jane Doe, terminó inmiscuida en un caso legal después de que se enterara que estaba embarazada cuando fue detenida al cruzar hacia Estados Unidos. Ella, de 17 años, dijo no estar lista para ser madre y pidió interrumpir el embarazo, lo cual es legal en Texas, donde fue arrestada. Ya estaba a la mitad de un aborto médico (había tomado la primera de dos pastillas) cuando un representante del gobierno federal se involucró y detuvo el proceso. Por varios días la joven no tenía seguro si iba a poder cumplir con sus deseos de terminar el embarazo en lo que el caso se peleaba en las cortes, hasta que un tribunal falló ayer a su favor. Pudo completar el proceso, aunque sigue bajo detención.

“Overall, it’s a good thing,” said B. “It just didn’t feel great to have to do it on someone else’s timeline other than my own.”
“It” was an official diagnosis of gender dysphoria. As a transgender member of the military, B had to secure the diagnosis by April 12 in order to continue serving openly.
That’s when the Trump administration’s new policy on transgender military service takes effect. It effectively bans transgender people from joining the military. The more than 14,000 already serving will be allowed to do so openly, so long as they have that formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria filed by the deadline. If not, they must serve under the gender assigned them at birth – or leave the armed forces.
President Trump first announced the ban in July 2017.

B, who is in the Air Force, met that deadline when a civilian doctor in Ithaca, New York secured their diagnosis. But B’s personal journey of identity — shared with their wife Peg — is far from finished.
“I realize that I’m scared,” Peg said. “It’s accelerated everything so quickly…all of a sudden, we’re being forced to make this choice that I don’t think we were quite at yet.”
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines gender dysphoria as “a difference between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, and significant distress or problems functioning.”
B says that language, specifically the term “distressed,” was a major disincentive in deciding whether to get the diagnosis — that the idea of having such a medical designation in their employment file is painful, especially when being transgender has never affected their job performance.
And for Peg, making the diagnosis official at this point was unwelcome. She just wasn’t ready.
“I have my own journey to deal with,” she says. “I met Bryan. I fell in love with Bryan. I married Bryan. We had kids. We moved on. Bree has come into our lives but it’s almost like bringing a new person in. It challenges everything from my sexuality to my femininity. And that is a hard thing for me to deal with on a daily basis, let alone have someone come up to me and say ‘deal with it faster.’ “
Not that Peg isn’t grateful that the diagnosis came through, mere days before the deadline. She remembers what it was like to live what she calls an “edited life” before the Obama administration announced it would allow transgender people in the military in 2016.
They have two kids, six and ten, who see their dad’s gender identity as “business as usual.” But Peg says the family spent years hiding B’s gender dysphoria, afraid it would destroy their military career.
B remembers, too — and doesn’t want transgender troops who missed the deadline, current and future, to go through that. A week after the doctor’s appointment, the Fram family traveled to Washington so B could meet with members of Congress and talk about the Trump administration’s ban. B told lawmakers how much harder it is to serve when forced to stay in the closet…or, in the case of those who don’t get the diagnosis in time, forced back into the closet.
In contrast, when allowed to serve openly, B says:
“You don’t have to have this filter in your brain that has to sit between your thoughts and the words or actions that come out of you…you can reach your full potential.”
So why not take that potential elsewhere? Leave the military for a job where the policy doesn’t affect B and their family?
“I have so much invested in the military,” says B. “The reasons why I joined haven’t changed…I joined right after September 11th. That had a profound impact on me and my ability to give back,” adding that the military is where they found purpose.
That’s what’s at stake for the service members who didn’t manage to get a diagnosis in time. B works with SPART*A, an organization that represents active duty transgender service members. The group was working with several people trying to file their paperwork up until the last minute.
Delays took many forms, particularly for those serving remotely where military doctors are not available. Even if a soldier gets a diagnosis from a civilian doctor, the paperwork needs a signature from a military medical professional.
And that paperwork itself raises other concerns for the Frams. Having lived through several policy changes as a military spouse, Peg is wary of how the documentation of B’s gender dysphoria might be used in the future.
“It opened up another avenue of fear for me,” says Peg. “Now that they’ve been forced to go into this box, it’s easier to call them out later.”
“The fear is always that this is the tip of the iceberg,” says B, believing the current policy is already a social step backward. “What comes next?”

In a media phone call, state health and human services secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly detailed which health guidelines will be lifted and which ones will remain in place.
“The big message today is, we’re at a place with this pandemic where those requirements of the past are no longer needed for the foreseeable future,” Ghaly explained to reporters. “We will be watching closely to determine if, and when, we need other public health protections to come back into place.”
Come June 15, the color-coded tier system will go away. Masking will be in line with CDC face-covering guidelines. California will no longer require social distancing and businesses will also be able to open at full capacity.
“When we saw the targeted date of June 15 we had our fingers crossed hoping that we’d make it to that,” said Mike Testa, Visit Sacramento president & CEO. “To find out today that that date is now set in stone is great.”
State health leaders said California arrived here based on a few key metrics: low COVID-19 case rates/a low statewide positivity rate, increasing vaccinations and a minimal threat of the state’s health care system being overwhelmed at this stage in the pandemic.
Ghaly said indoor event venues will be required by the state to ask attendees for vaccine or negative COVID-19 test result verification at events with more than 5,000 people. The state will recommend vendors for outdoor “mega” events (10,000 or more people) have a system to verify vaccination status/negative COVID-19 test.
The Sacramento area business community is ready for events, as we knew them pre-pandemic, to resume.
Visit Sacramento said consumer research shows people are more than willing to follow some guidelines if it means events can resume.
“I think all of us are just ready to have events and are willing to jump through those hoops to make those things happen,” Testa said. “We’re hearing from the consumer as well, ‘I’ll do whatever it takes. I’ll wear a mask. I’ll show you my vaccination card as long as I can get into the event.'”
Visit Sacramento said reopening officially happening June 15 comes at a good time with numerous outdoor and indoor events planned for the region in the weeks and months ahead.
“The idea of going somewhere and experiencing something outdoors… listening to live music… drinking a beer straight from the restaurant, I think that appeals to a lot of people,” Testa said.
When it comes to travel, Ghaly said when the state reopens, its travel recommendations will track with CDC guidance.
There won’t be quarantine and isolation requirements for travel within the country, but for different parts of the world with severe outbreaks, there will likely be restrictions on those travelers coming into the country, Ghaly said.
Chaotic scenes from the Kabul airport show that Afghans, desperate to flee the country, don’t believe the Taliban’s softer tone or promises to maintain women’s rights, a former CIA intelligence officer told Fox News in an exclusive interview.
Shannon Spann, the widow of a fellow CIA officer who was the first American service member to be killed in combat in Afghanistan soon after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, also reflected on children and women she met in the Middle Eastern nation during the U.S.’ intervention and what their lives will look like with the Taliban back in power.
“You don’t have to look further than the airport in Kabul to see that local Afghans don’t believe [the Taliban’s] story of ‘we’re going to be peaceful, we’re not going to do reprisals, we’re going to invite participation from women,'” Spann told Fox News. “People literally clinging to the landing gear of aircraft to try to get away from the story that they know is about to be written.”
The Hamid Karzai International Airport outside of Kabul fell into chaos as the Taliban seized the city, with Afghans and people from foreign nations, including U.S. citizens, flooding the site to escape the country. The mayhem led to several deaths. Video showed people clinging onto aircraft, and human remains were found in the wheel well of a U.S. military plane.
In the Taliban’s first news conference in Kabul, spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Afghans who helped the U.S. would not face retaliation and that women would have their rights guaranteed “within the framework of Shariah.” Such commitments, if followed through, would be a significant break from the Taliban that controlled the Afghanistan prior to the U.S. intervention, though there have already been reports of executions and forced marriages.
Believing that the Taliban is painting a false narrative as killings continue, Spann reflected on women and children she met in Afghanistan soon after the U.S. entered Afghanistan.
She described meeting young children, the same ages as her children, who she met in an orphanage during a 2002 trip to Afghanistan for a ceremony honoring her late husband.
“They greeted us with such friendship,” Spann, who left the CIA in 2009, told Fox News. “They had such resilient joy on their faces.”
“I can’t stop thinking this week about those children,” she continued. “Now those children are in their 20s and 30s, like my children are. What will their life look like now?”
On the same trip, Spann said she was able to join a women’s council with multigenerational women.
They “were just crying and holding my hand, thanking us for U.S involvement in their struggle and telling me stories about how they were prisoners in their own homes before when the Taliban was controlling their county,” Spann told Fox News. “I wonder today, what has become of those women.”
President Biden said Monday during an address that he stood behind his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, even though the Taliban swept through the nation.
“I’m deeply disappointed in President Biden’s defiant stance in his address to the nation,” Spann told Fox News. “In times of conflict, excellent leaders keep people bigger than the problem.”
“We utterly failed at keeping people bigger than the problem,” Spann continued.
Spann told Fox News that the U.S. neglected to keep the vision of the people involved, including operators, military personnel who had devoted 20 years to the mission in Afghanistan, Gold Star families, the women and children Spann met and the Afghan society as a whole.
“We prioritized a narrow subset of a problem over all of those people,” Spann said.
She told Fox News that it was “unconscionable” that the U.S. had no plan to “evacuate the most vulnerable of our friends and partners.”
LA HABANA, Cuba.- La comidilla informativa por estos días en La Habana ha sido la inauguración de la Cooperativa Número 2 de Taxis Ruteros, compuesta por 65 vehículos que enlazan el Parque de la Fraternidad, en el corazón de la ciudad, con el municipio periférico de La Lisa.
Comoquiera que se trata de una cooperativa organizada desde “arriba”, el Estado se arroga el derecho de dirigir casi todas sus actividades, entre ellas la fijación de las tarifas que han de cobrarles a sus usuarios. Se trata de unas tasas que, al menos en teoría, deben de ser inferiores a las aplicadas por los trabajadores por cuenta propia (taxistas privados o boteros).
Precisamente, algunos de estos boteros pensaban que, con la puesta en circulación de este nuevo servicio, el Estado se había decidido a establecer una sana competencia con los choferes privados, y llegaría a su fin el asedio que estos últimos han sufrido recientemente, cuando las autoridades toparon las tarifas que aplicaban a la población, y dieron a conocer un número telefónico para que los usuarios denunciaran las “irregularidades” cometidas por los boteros. Al decir de muchas personas, “echaron a fajar a unos ciudadanos con otros”.
Sin embargo, la esperanza de los boteros acaba de desvanecerse tras las declaraciones de la señora Marta Oramas Rivero, viceministra de Transporte. Según publica el periódico Juventud Rebelde, la funcionaria explicó que la inauguración de la Cooperativa de Taxis Ruteros se inscribe en el contexto del reordenamiento del servicio de transporte que brindan hoy los taxistas privados, a los que “se piensa ponerlos en rutas y con precios preestablecidos, estos últimos aprobados hace unos meses por el Consejo de la Administración Provincial de La Habana, y para esto se les brindará un grupo de facilidades, entre ellas el acceso al combustible” .
Además, la Viceministra anunció que “en el último trimestre del año en curso comenzarán a funcionar piqueras para los boteros”.
Es decir, que los taxistas privados perderán la independencia que debe tener todo trabajador por cuenta propia. No podrán escoger el itinerario a recorrer, no podrán decidir qué cobrarles a los usuarios, y quizás tengan que marcar una tarjeta de entrada y salida en la piquera que les asignen. De hecho, casi se convertirán en trabajadores estatales.
Por supuesto, fue inmediata la reacción de varios taxistas privados al conocer las intenciones gubernamentales. Uno de ellos expresó que “es inconcebible que si el carro es de mi propiedad, yo no pueda fijar la tarifa de mi servicio. Además, me obligan a cobrar menos, pero no me bajan los impuestos que debo pagar, y si me fiscalizan la declaración jurada de mis ingresos, me pueden poner una multa de varios miles de pesos. Es un abuso, compadre”.
Otro botero apuntó que “nos quieren engatusar con facilitarnos el combustible, pero las reparaciones y los accesorios del carro siguen yendo por nosotros. Por ejemplo, una goma puede valer 120 dólares, una batería 200 dólares, y si se trata de reparar el motor, óigame, son hasta mil dólares. ¿Y usted cree que eso se puede costear con una tarifa topada, como quiere el Gobierno que nosotros cobremos, y que puede equivaler a 25 centavos de dólar por cada pasajero?”
Un análisis más profundo de la situación podría indicar que semejante presión contra los boteros se debe a que, en el fondo, ni el propio gobierno confía en las cooperativas que ha creado, y mucho menos en que puedan competir con los privados en igualdad de condiciones.
Ojalá que los boteros no se desestimulen y continúen en las calles. En caso contrario tal vez asistamos al regreso masivo de las bicicletas.
