Full $1,400 payments are slated to go to those with adjusted gross incomes of up to $75,000 for individuals, $112,500 for heads of household and $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.

As with previous stimulus checks, the payments are reduced for those with income above those thresholds.

This time, however, the Senate has called to lower the income levels at which the payments get phased to zero.

Under those terms, the payments will be capped for individuals earning $80,000 in income, heads of household with $120,000 and married couples with $160,000.

Estimates indicate that change could make it so up to 12 million fewer adults may receive the stimulus money.

Another notable change is that dependents of all ages stand to be eligible for the payments. Previous checks have only includes those under 17.

Two people have been shot dead at a casino in Wisconsin, police said, in the latest shooting incident to hit the United States.

The suspected gunman was also shot dead by police after he opened fire on Saturday evening in the dining room of the Radisson hotel section of the Oneida casino, near Green Bay in the northern part of the state.

Lt Kevin Pawlak of the Brown County sheriff’s office said investigators believe the gunman was targeting a specific person he was angry at, but the person wasn’t at the casino at the time. Instead the gunman decided to shoot some of the intended victim’s friends or co-workers, police said. One other person was injured.

Pawlak said it was not clear if the shooter was a former employee of the restaurant or casino, but said “there’s some relationship that had to do with employment”.

“Whether or not they all worked there, we’re still working on,” he said.

Jawad Yatim, a witness, said he saw at least two people shot.

“I know for sure two, because it happened right next to us, literally right next to us,” Yatim said. “But he was shooting pretty aggressively in the building, so I wouldn’t doubt him hitting other people.”

Yatim said the shooting began in a casino restaurant.

“We got the hell out of there, thank God we’re OK, but obviously we wish the best for everybody who’s been shot,” he said.

Wisconsin’s attorney general, Josh Kaul, tweeted shortly before 10pm local time that the scene was contained.

“There is no longer a threat to the community,” he said.

Louise Cornelius, the casino’s gaming general manager, said on Facebook that “our hearts are breaking” over the incident but did not give any more details.

“It is with great distress that I post this message to our gaming employees and their families,” she wrote. “Our hearts are breaking over the terrible incident that occurred this evening at the Radisson hotel and conference center. Please know that support will be provided to all Gaming employees who are affected by this situation. More information will be posted as soon as it is available.”

Wisconsin’s state governor, Tony Evers, issued a statement late on Saturday saying he was “devastated” to hear about the shooting, but gave no details.

“While we are waiting for more information, we hope and pray those who were injured will recover and are grateful for the first responders who quickly responded to the situation.”

The Oneida casino is operated by the Oneida nation. The casino is connected to a large hotel and conference centre, the Radisson, also owned by the Oneida nation.

Max Westphal, who was gambling at the casino, said he was standing outside after being evacuated for what he thought was a minor issue.

“All of a sudden we hear a massive flurry of gunshots — 20 to 30 gunshots for sure,” Westphal told WBAY-TV. “We took off running towards the highway … There had to have been 50 cop cars that came by on the highway. It was honestly insane.”

It follows a spate of mass shootings in the US, including the massacre of eight workers at a FedEx depot in Indianapolis two weeks ago and that of 10 people at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado in March.

Earlier on Saturday two men suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting at a shopping mall in Tukwila near Seattle in what police described as apparently isolated violence.

Multiple reporters and pundits hit President Biden for walking back his comments that Facebook is “killing people” with COVID-19 misinformation, noting he had admittedly spread misinformation himself.

“They’re killing people,” Biden said of Facebook in response to a reporter’s question on Friday. “The only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated, and they’re killing people.”

Asked to clarify those controversial comments on Monday, Biden narrowed down his targets to a dozen spreaders of what the government has deemed harmful misinformation about the coronavirus and the vaccines against it.

“Facebook pointed out that most of the disinformation came from 12 individuals,” Biden said. “I was asked, what is happening … “Facebook isn’t killing people. These 12 people are killing people. My hope is that they would do something about misinformation — outrageous misinformation about vaccines.”

BIDEN BLASTED FOR ACCUSING FACEBOOK OF ‘KILLING PEOPLE’ OVER COVID MISINFORMATION AS WH PARTNERS WITH BIG TECH

The Verge reporter Alex Heath responded to Biden’s clarification, quipping, “you shouldn’t take me calling you a murderer personally.”

“Not the administration’s finest hour,” agreed NBC’s Dylan Byers.

A few others, like The Atlantic’s David A. Graham and conservative CNN commentator Scott Jennings, wondered if the White House was guilty of the kind of “misinformation” the administration mentioned on Friday.

FACEBOOK ISSUES HARSH RESPONSE TO BIDEN ACCUSATION THAT PLATFORM IS ‘KILLING PEOPLE’

“So was the previous statement…misinformation?” Graham asked.

“Walkback on aisle 1600,” said The National Journal’s Josh Kraushaar.

Facebook released a defensive statement following Biden’s initial accusation, arguing that their platform “is helping save lives.”

“We will not be distracted by accusations which aren’t supported by the facts,” Facebook said. “The fact is that more than 2 billion people have viewed authoritative information about COVID-19 and vaccines on Facebook, which is more than any other place on the internet. More than 3.3 million Americans have also used our vaccine finder tool to find out where and how to get a vaccine. The facts show that Facebook is helping save lives. Period.”

The White House recently unveiled their partnership with Big Tech companies to crack down on so-called coronavirus “misinformation,” with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki saying the administration is “making sure social media platforms are aware of the latest narratives.” Critics said the effort would do little more than hinder free speech and pointed out Facebook’s checkered history on identifying misinformation, such as when it flagged posts about the coronavirus lab-leak theory.

Ben Carson has fired back at Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., after the controversial freshman congresswoman criticized him after a hearing Tuesday.

Omar knocked the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secretary over his conduct during an appearance before the House Financial Services Committee.

“Not sure he was fully awake, maybe he meant to reclaim his time back to sleep,” she quipped. She was playing off of Carson’s request for time during a testy exchange with Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.

DEMS USE HEARING TO REPEATEDLY QUIZ, STUMP BEN CARSON ON OBSCURE ACRONYMS

Carson, a renowned doctor and John’s Hopkins University’s former director of pediatric neurosurgery, fired back by touting his endurance during marathon surgeries.

“Since you brought it up… I know what it’s like to actually be sleepy, especially after 18-hour surgeries and operating on babies in the womb,” he said.

While he was at it, Carson also took a shot at Omar’s position on abortion. “I hope @IlhanMN knows I care about all people, even those she doesn’t recognize as having a right to life.”

Omar, in May, defended abortion access as a slew of states — particularly Alabama — passed laws imposing major restrictions on the practice. “Women’s rights are human rights,” she previously tweeted.

“No child or woman should be forced to have pregnancy against her own will. These laws do not protect women’s rights it protects the violator committing these crimes,” she said alongside an article about Alabama’s ban.

Carson, ironically, received similar criticism from the same person who appointed him to lead HUD. When Carson and President Trump were competitors during the 2016 election cycle, Trump derided him as “super low energy.

The omicron variant first discovered in South Africa last week is likely to quickly spread around the globe and could result in “severe consequences,” the World Health Organization warned Monday.

“There could be future surges of COVID-19, which could have severe consequences depending on a number of factors including where surges may take place,” the WHO said in a technical brief. “The overall global risk related to the (omicron variant) is assessed as very high.”

The WHO said there is currently no information to suggest symptoms connected with omicron differ from those associated with other variants. No deaths linked to the omicron variant have been reported, the WHO added. However, it said preliminary evidence raises the possibility the variant has mutations that could help it both evade an immune-system response and make it more transmissible.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Department on Monday said to avoid travel to the U.K. as the delta variant of Covid-19 continues to spread.

The warnings are “Level 4,” the CDC and State Department’s highest. While not binding, they come after airline executives and other members of the travel industry have pressed the Biden administration to loosen existing Covid travel restrictions that have devastated demand for international bookings.

The United States has had an entry ban in place for non-U.S. citizens from the EU, U.K. and other countries for much of the coronavirus pandemic, though several European nations have recently opened their doors to international visitors. Canada, however, said Monday it will allow fully vaccinated U.S. citizens into the country for nonessential travel starting Aug. 9.

The White House and the British Embassy in Washington didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The CDC said if individuals must travel to the U.K., they should be fully vaccinated against Covid. Meanwhile, England lifted remaining Covid-19 restrictions on Monday, allowing for indoor gatherings and the reopening of nightclubs.

But Covid infections remain high across the U.K. with 316,691 cases reported over the last seven days, up by about 43% from the previous seven-day period, according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

U.S. airline stocks fell sharply on Monday as an increasing number of Covid cases raised concerns about the economic recovery and the potential impact on the recent resurgence in travel demand after a slump for much of the past year.

Covid cases in the U.S. have jumped by about 66% in the past week to a seven-day average of about 32,300 new cases per day, according to Johns Hopkins data.

Nicholas strengthened into a hurricane late Monday then made landfall along the central Texas coast early Tuesday, bringing with it rain so heavy it could produce “life-threatening” flash flooding, the National Hurricane Center said.

Nicholas was about 20 miles northeast of Matagorda, Texas, and about 25 miles west-southwest of Freeport, Texas, and was moving north-northeast at 10 miles an hour. It had with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, barely over the 74 mph threshold for a hurricane.

The storm’s center is forecast to move slowly over southeastern Texas Tuesday and Tuesday night, then over southwestern Louisiana on Wednesday. The storm will probably weaken as it moves inland.

Nicholas is expected to inundate some areas with 6 to 12 inches of rain and up to a foot-and-half in some spots, which could have “life-threatening flash flooding impacts, especially in urbanized metropolitan areas” across parts of the upper Texas Gulf coast into far southwestern Louisiana, the center said. Life-threatening storm surges are possible.

“There are people who do drive into high water and they sometimes lose their vehicles and even worse sometimes lose their lives,” Governor Greg Abbott said Monday.

The Gulf Coast is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Ida. In southeast Louisiana, officials said more than 130,000 buildings were still without power as of Sunday. Ahead of Nicholas, Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency and urged residents to prepare for possible flooding and heavy rain.

“One of the things we have to guard against is dismissing the threat of this storm because it is not projected currently to reach hurricane strength before it makes landfall,” Edwards said Monday. “I know bracing for another storm while we are still responding to and trying to recover from Hurricane Ida is not the position we wanted to be in, but it is the situation we are prepared for.”

Nicholas is the 14th named storm of the season, a number usually hit later in mid-November.

The video was reportedly recorded Monday, meaning Pelosi was seemingly in violation of local coronavirus-related restrictions. San Francisco hair salons and barber shops reopened for business outdoors only on Tuesday.

Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hammill defended the speaker’s salon visit and said she “complied with the rules as presented to her by this establishment.”

“The Speaker always wears a mask and complies with local COVID requirements,” Hammill said in a statement to POLITICO. “This business offered for the Speaker to come in on Monday and told her they were allowed by the city to have one customer at a time in the business.”

Still, the president and his conservative media allies were intent on promoting the footage. In another tweet Wednesday, Trump used the video to again mock Pelosi for Massachusetts Rep. Joe Kennedy’s failed Democratic primary challenge to Sen. Ed Markey.

“The Beauty Parlor owner must really dislike Crazy Nancy Pelosi. Turning her in, on tape, is a really big deal. She probably treats him like she treats everyone else,” Trump wrote. “And she strongly supported a Kennedy who just lost in, of all places, Massachusetts!”

Trump also retweeted a version of the video shared online by his reelection campaign, as well as a message arguing that if “Nancy Pelosi can get her hair done in person — you can vote in person.”

Meanwhile, Fox News host Sean Hannity derided the speaker in a tweet as “PAMPERED PELOSI,” and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows invoked the salon visit during an interview Wednesday morning on “Fox & Friends.”

Meadows, who is at an impasse with Pelosi in talks for a new round of coronavirus relief, accused her of hypocrisy and said the incident was representative of “typical Washington, D.C.”

“Whether it’s in San Francisco with her going into a salon or in the privacy of a negotiating room, it’s time that she get serious about helping the American people,” he said.

President Donald Trump says he’s not happy about North Korea’s recent military tests. This comes at the same time says the U.S. sent an aircraft carrier group to the Persian Gulf because the Iranians “were threatening.” (May 9)
AP, AP

North Korea executed its special nuclear envoy to the United States as part of a purge of senior officials over the failed summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump, South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper claimed Friday.

Kim Hyok Chol was executed by firing squad in March along with four other foreign ministry officials, the paper reported, citing an unidentified North Korean source.

North Korea neither confirmed nor denied the report. South Korea’s government was not able to confirm the claim. Previous media reports about the fate of North Korean officials who have fallen afoul of Pyongyang’s leader have proven to be false.

Chosun Ilbo is one of South Korea’s largest daily newspapers. However, it’s notoriously difficult to get information out of North Korea because it closely guards secrets.

Trump’s North Korea diplomacy: It looks troubled. It may not mean war

Still, Chosun Ilbo reported Kim Hyok Chol and the other senior officials were shot after being accused of spying for the United States. The paper reported Kim Jong Un ordered the purge amid mounting dissatisfaction with the summit in Hanoi – the second time Kim and Trump met for face-to-face talks. In Vietnam, they failed to reach a deal because of conflicts over the White House’s call for complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and North Korean demands for sanctions relief.

Since then, amid a diplomatic standoff between Pyongyang and Washington, North Korea has resumed testing short-range ballistic missiles, ending a pause in launches that began in late 2017. The tests are viewed as a way for Kim to pressure Trump to ease sanctions without actually causing negotiations to collapse.

“North Korea fired off some small weapons, which disturbed some of my people, and others, but not me,” Trump tweeted during a recent trip to Japan.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was asked about the Chosun Ilbo report during a news conference in Berlin. He said Friday the U.S. was “doing our best to check it out.”

Kim has presided over high-profile purges since taking over as North Korea’s leader in 2011. Kim’s uncle, Jang Song Thaek, at the time North Korea’s second most powerful man, was convicted of treason and executed in late 2013. And Rodong Sinmun, a North Korean newspaper, appeared to indirectly refer to the purge on Thursday.

“Acting like one is revering the leader but dreaming of something else when one turns around, is an anti-party, anti-revolutionary act that has thrown away the moral fidelity towards the leader and such people will not avoid the stern judgment of the revolution,” the paper said. “There are traitors and turncoats who only memorize words of loyalty towards the leader and even change according to the trend of the time.”

Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader’s sister, who regularly accompanies her brother at big events, has not been seen in public since the Hanoi meeting.

Chosun Ilbo also reported that Kim Yong Chol, Kim’s right-hand man and Pompeo’s counterpart at the Hanoi summit, has been sent to a labor and reeducation camp near the Chinese border. That claim, too, was not been independently verified.

NOTICIAS  TELEMUNDO  PRESENTS:

“MURIENDO POR CRUZAR,” AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCREASING NUMBER OF IMMIGRANT DEATHS ALONG THE BORDER, THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 3 AT 6 P.M./5 C

Carmen Dominicci and Neida Sandoval present the Telemundo and The Weather Channel co-production

Miami – July 31, 2014 – Telemundo presents “Muriendo por Cruzar”, a documentary that investigates why increasing numbers of immigrants are dying while trying to cross the US-Mexican border near the city of Falfurrias, Texas, this Sunday, August 3 at 6PM/5 C.  The Telemundo and The Weather Channel co-production, presented by Noticias Telemundo journalists Carmen Dominicci and Neida Sandoval, reveals the obstacles immigrants face once they cross into US territory, including extreme weather conditions, as they try to evade the border patrol.  “Muriendo por Cruzar” is part of Noticias Telemundo’s special coverage of the crisis on the border and immigration reform.

“‘Muriendo por Cruzar’” dares to ask questions that reveal the actual conditions undocumented immigrants face as they try to start a new life in the United States,” said Alina Falcón, Telemundo’s Executive Vice President for News and Alternative Programming.  “Our collaboration with The Weather Channel was very productive. They have a unique expertise in covering the impact of weather on people’s lives, as we do in covering immigration reform and the border crisis. The result is a compelling documentary that exposes a harrowing reality.”

“Muriendo por Cruzar” is the first co-production by Telemundo and The Weather Channel.  Both networks are part of NBCUniversal.

(CNN)After a day of attacks from commentators on the right, the White House announced Wednesday night that it planned to nominate three judges for the California seats on the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

“The airlines will verify vaccination status in same way they have been, and will continue to do, with pre-departure negative Covid test results,” a senior Biden administration official told reporters Monday.

Those under the age of 18 will be exempted from these requirements, in large part due to the limited availability or authorization of Covid-19 vaccines for children across much of the world. Children aged 2 or older will be required to have a negative Covid test prior to their flight.

The U.S. first outlined the impending international travel rules for fully vaccinated individuals in mid September.

“We have taken the deliberate step of taking this time to ensure implementation goes as smooth as possible, particularly with something this wide ranging,” a second senior administration official told reporters on Monday.

The rules also include an exemption for people hailing from a country with limited vaccine availability, which the Biden administration is defining as a place where less than 10 percent of the population is fully vaccinated “due to lack of vaccines,” according to one senior administration official. There are roughly 50 countries that fall under that threshold, including much of Africa.

However, that official added that unvaccinated individuals who qualify will have to demonstrate a “specific, compelling” reason for traveling to the U.S. and test negative one day prior to their flight. Any child traveling with an unvaccinated adult will also have to show proof of a negative test within that same window.

Unvaccinated U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents will also have to show proof of a negative test one day prior to boarding, down from three days. Fully vaccinated individuals will continue to have three days to get tested.

There are a handful of other narrow exceptions to the vaccination requirement, such as for foreign nationals who had severe allergic reactions to a prior Covid-19 vaccine dose.

U.S-bound travelers will also have to submit information to airlines, such as working phone numbers and email addresses, to allow health officials to conduct contact tracing if travelers have been potentially exposed to the coronavirus.

The announcement of the new rules comes days before President Joe Biden’s planned trip to Europe for a set of summit meetings with other global leaders, as well as Pope Francis.

The U.S. is also scheduled to reopen land and ferry crossings to fully vaccinated travelers the same day as the air travel rules, Nov. 8. The borders have been closed to non-essential, discretionary travel since March 2020 and in recent months had become a major source of frustration within the Canadian government and among U.S. elected officials representing communities along the northern border.

President Joe Biden campaigned for Democrat Terry McAuliffe one week ahead of Virginia’s gubernatorial election as a new poll shows a deadlock in the race.

According to a Suffolk University poll of likely Virginia voters, McAuliffe narrowly leads with 46 percent over Republican Glenn Youngkin by less than one point, or within the poll’s statistical margin of error. Biden hoped to boost the former governor’s campaign on Tuesday evening despite his own declining approval rating.

“You don’t have to wonder what kind of governor Terry will be because you know what a great governor he was,” Biden said. “Wasn’t just because of what he promised, it’s what he delivered.”

The president continued that during McAuliffe’s time in office, from 2014 to 2018, he improved the state’s economy, created jobs, invested in education, supported the veterans community and enacted gun safety measures.

President Joe Biden’s endorsement of Terry McAuliffe comes as the president faces criticism for his handling of the economy, immigration, infrastructure and climate change—which have been cited as the likely reasons he’s losing popularity. Above, Biden appears on the stump with McAuliffe at Virginia Highlands Park on October 26, 2021, in Arlington, Virginia.

During Biden’s endorsement of McAuliffe, he also took aim at former President Donald Trump and told voters that a Republican victory could undermine democracy.

“Terry’s opponent not only embraces someone with such a lack of character, he endorses Donald Trump’s bad ideas and bad record,” the president said.

In the same Suffolk University survey, 52 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Biden and 66 percent said they felt the nation was headed in the same direction.

As of Monday, Biden had an approval rating of 43.5 percent and a disapproval rating of 50.6 percent, according to a poll of polls created by data website FiveThirtyEight.

Just days before that, on Friday, the Democrat’s approval rating sunk to a new low of 43.4 percent, and his disapproval rating reached 50.7 percent.

Biden’s approval rating was closer to 53 percent and his disapproval rating was 36 percent when he first took office, according to the website.

Virginia’s gubernatorial election, which is taking place in an off-year, may provide insight into how next year’s midterms will shape up. A few key issues have primarily been defining the governor’s race ahead of Election Day.

Forty percent of Virginia voters surveyed said the economy or jobs was the most important issue impacting the governor’s race while 23 percent said education and 17 percent said health care, according to the poll.

McAuliffe led Youngkin 80 to 13 percent among those concerned about healthcare but trailed by 13 points for those most concerned about the economy.

Newsweek reached out to McAuliffe for comment.

You can find the latest on the investigation involving Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie hereDownload the WFLA app for breaking news push alerts and sign up for breaking news email alerts.

NORTH PORT, Fla. (WFLA) — Ten days before he vanished, Brian Laundrie bought a new cell phone, according to the Laundrie family’s attorney Steve Bertolino.

Bertolino tells 8 On Your Side the FBI now has that phone. But many have been asking about Gabby Petito’s phone and whether Laundrie had a different phone while they were together on their road trip.

Since the phones undoubtedly hold valuable clues, 8 On Your Side has been looking into that question.

We closely examined the police body camera video after the couple’s alleged domestic dispute in Moab, Utah on Aug. 12. The video shows that, at the time, Petito and Laundrie both had phones.

We know Petito had a phone – her mom, Nichole Schmidt, got an “odd text” from her on Aug. 27, according to a search warrant, and a final text on Aug. 30.

About 42 minutes into the police stop in Utah, video shows Laundrie reach into the passenger side of the van. He hands a female law enforcement official Petito’s cellphone.

“She’s got her cellphone. She’s calling her parents,” the officer told other officials minutes later.

    (Moab Police Department)

That phone from the passenger side stays in Petito’s lap.

Meanwhile with Laundrie: When we backed up the video to before he retrieved Petito’s cellphone, he is seen slipping what appears to be a different phone into his pocket. Toward the end of the stop, you can see Laundrie pull a phone out of his pocket.

The family’s attorney did not reveal anything about the phone on the cross-country trip. But he says Laundrie did purchase a new phone on Sept. 4, three days after he returned to North Port without Petito.

The attorney says the FBI has the new phone and states it was not a burner phone. Laundrie reportedly had an account with AT&T for the new phone.

Right now, it remains unclear if the FBI has retrieved Petito’s cellphone.

Editor’s note: A previous version of the story included a statement from Laundrie saying he did not have a phone. We are looking into whether or not he was referring to having a phone in general or in that specific incident with police.
