NOTICIAS  TELEMUNDO  PRESENTS:

“MURIENDO POR CRUZAR,” AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCREASING NUMBER OF IMMIGRANT DEATHS ALONG THE BORDER, THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 3 AT 6 P.M./5 C

Carmen Dominicci and Neida Sandoval present the Telemundo and The Weather Channel co-production

Miami – July 31, 2014 – Telemundo presents “Muriendo por Cruzar”, a documentary that investigates why increasing numbers of immigrants are dying while trying to cross the US-Mexican border near the city of Falfurrias, Texas, this Sunday, August 3 at 6PM/5 C.  The Telemundo and The Weather Channel co-production, presented by Noticias Telemundo journalists Carmen Dominicci and Neida Sandoval, reveals the obstacles immigrants face once they cross into US territory, including extreme weather conditions, as they try to evade the border patrol.  “Muriendo por Cruzar” is part of Noticias Telemundo’s special coverage of the crisis on the border and immigration reform.

“‘Muriendo por Cruzar’” dares to ask questions that reveal the actual conditions undocumented immigrants face as they try to start a new life in the United States,” said Alina Falcón, Telemundo’s Executive Vice President for News and Alternative Programming.  “Our collaboration with The Weather Channel was very productive. They have a unique expertise in covering the impact of weather on people’s lives, as we do in covering immigration reform and the border crisis. The result is a compelling documentary that exposes a harrowing reality.”

“Muriendo por Cruzar” is the first co-production by Telemundo and The Weather Channel.  Both networks are part of NBCUniversal.

In another nail-biting vote in the U.K.’s Parliament, lawmakers voted by a majority of just one to force Prime Minister Theresa May to seek an extension to the Brexit process and avoid a no-deal departure.

Members of Parliament (MPs) voted for the draft legislation on Wednesday evening to prevent a shock no-deal exit on April 12 (the date of a new deadline granted by the EU) by 313 votes to 312. The bill will need to be approved by the upper house of parliament, the House of Lords, to become law.

Despite last night’s vote in favor of a delay to Brexit, it’s far from certain that the EU will grant the U.K. an extension when European leaders meet next Wednesday, April 10, at an emergency summit dedicated to Brexit.

The U.K. was originally meant to leave the EU on March 29 but granted more time by the EU. Ahead of the U.K. Parliament’s vote last night, the European Commission President Jean-Claude reiterated that April 12 was the final date for the approval of the Brexit deal and that no short extension would be possible.

MPs have rejected May’s Brexit deal three times now, and a selection of alternative Brexit options have also failed to win a majority of support.

May’s talks with opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn Wednesday also failed to reach any compromise or consensus. Whatever happens next, experts expect a longer delay to Brexit and more political and economic uncertainty.

“As an American watching this from afar, we thought this would be done by now and I think what we’re increasingly coming to terms with is that no matter what agreement is agreed right now, this is going to be a long-term process because Britain is divided,” Christopher Smart, head of macroeconomic and geopolitical research at Barings, told CNBC Thursday.

Prolonging the agony

A decision over an extension won’t be taken lightly; the EU does not want to be blamed for scuppering a Brexit deal and a disorderly Brexit could harm its own interests — but so too could an extension in which the uncertainty surrounding future relations is prolonged.

May continues talks with Corbyn on Thursday but if they cannot agree a compromise deal there are expected to be more parliamentary votes on what course Brexit should take. The ball is in Europe’s court over whether it will afford the U.K. more time if needed (and as expected) especially as it would mean that the U.K. will have to participate in European Parliament elections between May 23-26.

That could be an unappealing prospect for many politicians in Europe already wary of the rise of populist party politics — the same forces that fomented euroskeptic sentiment in the U.K. ahead of the 2016 referendum on EU membership.

While German Chancellor Angela Merkel signaled Wednesday that she was willing to grant an open extension to allow for an orderly Brexit. Her counterpart in France, President Emmanuel Macron, is not so keen on a delay and the potential disruption that could cause, however.

“It is far from clear whether an extension will be forthcoming,” Stefan Auer, associate professor in European Studies at the University of Hong Kong, told CNBC Thursday.

“Merkel seems to be willing to grant it but she’ll need to persuade Macron in France that that is in the EU’s interests and I remain skeptical of that strategy, it will cause so much mess for the EU and the U.K. it will prolong the agony,” he told CNBC’s “Capital Connection.”

Auer said it would be a “nightmare” for the EU if the U.K. took part in EU parliamentary elections in May as it would boost euroskeptics in the region. “The EU, at its heart, is a voluntary association of nation states and the credibility of that claim would be greatly diminished if the perception is created that the U.K. is somehow not allowed to leave.”

“It would not only create a political mess in the U.K. … It would also have massive political repercussions in continental Europe so I think EU leaders will be wary of that prospect — but they’re equally wary of a no-deal Brexit,” he said.

Nicholas strengthened into a hurricane late Monday then made landfall along the central Texas coast early Tuesday, bringing with it rain so heavy it could produce “life-threatening” flash flooding, the National Hurricane Center said.

Nicholas was about 20 miles northeast of Matagorda, Texas, and about 25 miles west-southwest of Freeport, Texas, and was moving north-northeast at 10 miles an hour. It had with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, barely over the 74 mph threshold for a hurricane.

The storm’s center is forecast to move slowly over southeastern Texas Tuesday and Tuesday night, then over southwestern Louisiana on Wednesday. The storm will probably weaken as it moves inland.

Nicholas is expected to inundate some areas with 6 to 12 inches of rain and up to a foot-and-half in some spots, which could have “life-threatening flash flooding impacts, especially in urbanized metropolitan areas” across parts of the upper Texas Gulf coast into far southwestern Louisiana, the center said. Life-threatening storm surges are possible.

A satellite image shows Hurricane Nicholas on September 13, 2021.

“There are people who do drive into high water and they sometimes lose their vehicles and even worse sometimes lose their lives,” Governor Greg Abbott said Monday.

The Gulf Coast is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Ida. In southeast Louisiana, officials said more than 130,000 buildings were still without power as of Sunday. Ahead of Nicholas, Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency and urged residents to prepare for possible flooding and heavy rain.

“One of the things we have to guard against is dismissing the threat of this storm because it is not projected currently to reach hurricane strength before it makes landfall,” Edwards said Monday. “I know bracing for another storm while we are still responding to and trying to recover from Hurricane Ida is not the position we wanted to be in, but it is the situation we are prepared for.”

Nicholas is the 14th named storm of the season, a number usually hit later in mid-November.

President Donald Trump says he’s not happy about North Korea’s recent military tests. This comes at the same time says the U.S. sent an aircraft carrier group to the Persian Gulf because the Iranians “were threatening.” (May 9)
AP, AP

North Korea executed its special nuclear envoy to the United States as part of a purge of senior officials over the failed summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump, South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper claimed Friday.

Kim Hyok Chol was executed by firing squad in March along with four other foreign ministry officials, the paper reported, citing an unidentified North Korean source.

North Korea neither confirmed nor denied the report. South Korea’s government was not able to confirm the claim. Previous media reports about the fate of North Korean officials who have fallen afoul of Pyongyang’s leader have proven to be false.

Chosun Ilbo is one of South Korea’s largest daily newspapers. However, it’s notoriously difficult to get information out of North Korea because it closely guards secrets.

Trump’s North Korea diplomacy: It looks troubled. It may not mean war

Still, Chosun Ilbo reported Kim Hyok Chol and the other senior officials were shot after being accused of spying for the United States. The paper reported Kim Jong Un ordered the purge amid mounting dissatisfaction with the summit in Hanoi – the second time Kim and Trump met for face-to-face talks. In Vietnam, they failed to reach a deal because of conflicts over the White House’s call for complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and North Korean demands for sanctions relief.

Since then, amid a diplomatic standoff between Pyongyang and Washington, North Korea has resumed testing short-range ballistic missiles, ending a pause in launches that began in late 2017. The tests are viewed as a way for Kim to pressure Trump to ease sanctions without actually causing negotiations to collapse.

“North Korea fired off some small weapons, which disturbed some of my people, and others, but not me,” Trump tweeted during a recent trip to Japan.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was asked about the Chosun Ilbo report during a news conference in Berlin. He said Friday the U.S. was “doing our best to check it out.”

Kim has presided over high-profile purges since taking over as North Korea’s leader in 2011. Kim’s uncle, Jang Song Thaek, at the time North Korea’s second most powerful man, was convicted of treason and executed in late 2013. And Rodong Sinmun, a North Korean newspaper, appeared to indirectly refer to the purge on Thursday.

“Acting like one is revering the leader but dreaming of something else when one turns around, is an anti-party, anti-revolutionary act that has thrown away the moral fidelity towards the leader and such people will not avoid the stern judgment of the revolution,” the paper said. “There are traitors and turncoats who only memorize words of loyalty towards the leader and even change according to the trend of the time.”

Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader’s sister, who regularly accompanies her brother at big events, has not been seen in public since the Hanoi meeting.

Chosun Ilbo also reported that Kim Yong Chol, Kim’s right-hand man and Pompeo’s counterpart at the Hanoi summit, has been sent to a labor and reeducation camp near the Chinese border. That claim, too, was not been independently verified.

IDAHO FALLS — President Joe Biden’s new national COVID-19 vaccine mandates will mean changes for some eastern Idaho employees.

Biden’s order mandates vaccines for everyone at businesses employing more than 100 workers. As an alternative, workers will be able to show a negative result from a COVID-19 test at least once a week. Federal employees and their contractors won’t have the choice to get tested. Based on an executive order, those employees will have to get vaccinated or face losing their jobs.

RELATED | New rule mandates all employers with over 100 workers require vaccinations or weekly tests

The biggest impact in eastern Idaho will likely be felt at Idaho National Laboratory, which employs thousands of federal workers and contractors.

“Consistent with the administration’s Sept. 9 executive order, beginning Nov. 19, Idaho National Laboratory will require all staff members and many of its subcontractors to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” INL Director John Wagner said in a statement. “This decision reflects our core value of safety. It reflects our desire to protect vulnerable populations. As a leader in the state of Idaho and a national laboratory that changes the world through great science, it reflects our willingness to use the best scientific data available to protect our staff and achieve our missions.”

The Idaho National Laboratory employs about 5,200 people. INL spokeswoman Sarah Neumann said 69% of the employees are already vaccinated against COVID-19.

Not everyone at the lab was happy with that stance. A large number of INL employees and its contract workers met Thursday night at Community Park in Idaho Falls to sign a petition against the new mandate.

“There (are) multiple reasons for not wanting to get the vaccine, all of them are legitimate,” said Nicholas Christiansen, an INL employee who organized the petition. “There are multiple reasons for getting the vaccine and all of them are legitimate. What it boils down to is nobody has the right to tell you what you have to put into your body and that should never be a condition of employment.”

As of Monday afternoon, the petition had gathered about 385 signatures and Christiansen said more were coming in by the hour.

“We acknowledge the executive order and the constraints that BEA and INL face because of it,” Christensen said. “We believe these mandates to be unconstitutional and an egregious overreach by the executive branch of government. We are asking INL management to delay implementation of the executive order until such time as it is reviewed for constitutionality by a federal judge and to engage with employees in productive forums to find alternatives to vaccination.”

It’s not just the Idaho National Laboratory that is faced with mandated vaccines. For private companies employing more than 100 workers, Biden said the mandates will come through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It is not yet fully clear as to what the ramifications from OSHA will be, but The National Law Review reports officials could fine $13,653 per violation, the maximum established by law.

EastIdahoNews.com reached out to several local employers with over 100 employees but none returned requests for comment.

Biden’s directives also said if hospitals want to treat patients on Medicare and Medicaid, all healthcare workers at the facilities must be vaccinated. Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Coleen Niemann said as of now the hospital does not require employees to get vaccinated, but it is highly encouraged. Niemann said she was not sure how Biden’s order will impact the hospital’s policy.

OSHA jurisdiction does not extend to Idaho and local government employees unlike 22 other states with OSHA-approved State Plans.

Idaho Falls city spokesman Bud Cranor said the city is evaluating what President Biden’s announcement means for city employees. Cranor said city attorneys are reviewing the matter and looking to seek guidance from the Idaho state government.

Gov. Brad Little has been outspoken against Biden’s executive orders and mandates. Little said he believes government should stay out of decisions involving employers and employees as much as possible.

“The State of Idaho is exploring legal action to stop President Biden’s unprecedented government overreach into the private sector with his new COVID-19 plan,” Little said in a news release. “I am working closely with my legal counsel and Attorney General Lawrence Wasden on legal options to protect the rights of business owners and their employees.”

A spokesman for Wasden’s office declined to comment on Monday.

RELATED | Idaho enacts crisis hospital care standards amid COVID surge

While Idaho has faced opposition to vaccines and other COVID-19 measures since the start of the pandemic, the population has not been immune to the virus. The Associated Press reported last week “crisis standards of care” have been implemented for the Gem State’s northern hospitals. Crisis Standards of care come when there are more coronavirus patients than medical providers can handle.

“We have reached an unprecedented and unwanted point in the history of our state,” Little said in an Idaho Department of Health and Welfare news release. “We have taken so many steps to avoid getting here, but yet again we need to ask more Idahoans to choose to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. More Idahoans need to choose to receive the vaccine so we can minimize the spread of the disease and reduce the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations, many of which involve younger Idahoans and are preventable with safe and effective vaccines.”

Between the Eastern Idaho Public Health and Southeastern Public Health district, the IDHW reports 47% of those 12 years old and older have been fully vaccinated. An additional 6% of the population has received just one dose of the two-dose vaccines.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the House will vote on a resolution condemning anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other forms of hate after an upheaval that split Democrats and clouded their agenda. But Pelosi said the measure won’t name Ilhan Omar. (March 7)
AP

ELMIRA, N.Y. – A New York man is in custody after federal authorities allege he made death threats against Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.

Patrick W. Carlineo, 55, of Addison, was arrested Friday morning and charged by criminal complaint with threatening to assault and murder a United States official.

Carlineo threatened to kill Omar, a Democrat, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Brett A. Harvey, who is prosecuting the case.

On March 21, a staff member in Omar’s office received a phone call around 12:20 p.m., the criminal complaint stated.

During the call, an individual, eventually identified as Carlineo, allegedly stated to the staff member, “Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s an (expletive) terrorist. I’ll put a bullet in her (expletive) skull.”

After receiving the call, Omar’s office referred the threat to the United States Capitol Police, which began an investigation in coordination with the FBI.

Omar is a freshman representative who was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterm election and one of three members of Congress who are Muslim.

Omar faced backlash in recent months for tweets and comments she made that critics say played into enduring anti-Semitic stereotypes.

Carlineo provided a name and phone number to Omar’s staff member, and authorities were able to trace the phone number to an Addison address.

He was questioned March 29 by FBI agents at his residence in Steuben County, according to the criminal complaint.

Carlineo told the agents he is a patriot, that he loves President Donald Trump and hates radical Muslims in government, the complaint stated.

He also told agents he didn’t remember exactly what he said to Omar’s staffer but admitted it might have been close to what her office reported to authorities.

When asked if there were any weapons in the residence, Carlineo confirmed there was a shotgun and a .22-caliber rifle, according to the complaint.

OPINION: You can critique Israel without sounding anti-Semitic. Rep. Ilhan Omar should learn how.

Carlineo made an initial appearance Friday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Marian W. Payson and is being held pending a detention hearing at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

President Joe Biden campaigned for Democrat Terry McAuliffe one week ahead of Virginia’s gubernatorial election as a new poll shows a deadlock in the race.

According to a Suffolk University poll of likely Virginia voters, McAuliffe narrowly leads with 46 percent over Republican Glenn Youngkin by less than one point, or within the poll’s statistical margin of error. Biden hoped to boost the former governor’s campaign on Tuesday evening despite his own declining approval rating.

“You don’t have to wonder what kind of governor Terry will be because you know what a great governor he was,” Biden said. “Wasn’t just because of what he promised, it’s what he delivered.”

The president continued that during McAuliffe’s time in office, from 2014 to 2018, he improved the state’s economy, created jobs, invested in education, supported the veterans community and enacted gun safety measures.

President Joe Biden’s endorsement of Terry McAuliffe comes as the president faces criticism for his handling of the economy, immigration, infrastructure and climate change—which have been cited as the likely reasons he’s losing popularity. During Biden’s endorsement of McAuliffe, he also took aim at former President Donald Trump and told voters that a Republican victory could undermine democracy.

“Terry’s opponent not only embraces someone with such a lack of character, he endorses Donald Trump’s bad ideas and bad record,” the president said.

In the same Suffolk University survey, 52 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Biden and 66 percent said they felt the nation was headed in the same direction.

As of Monday, Biden had an approval rating of 43.5 percent and a disapproval rating of 50.6 percent, according to a poll of polls created by data website FiveThirtyEight.

Just days before that, on Friday, the Democrat’s approval rating sunk to a new low of 43.4 percent, and his disapproval rating reached 50.7 percent.

Biden’s approval rating was closer to 53 percent and his disapproval rating was 36 percent when he first took office, according to the website.

Virginia’s gubernatorial election, which is taking place in an off-year, may provide insight into how next year’s midterms will shape up. A few key issues have primarily been defining the governor’s race ahead of Election Day.

Forty percent of Virginia voters surveyed said the economy or jobs was the most important issue impacting the governor’s race while 23 percent said education and 17 percent said health care, according to the poll.

McAuliffe led Youngkin 80 to 13 percent among those concerned about healthcare but trailed by 13 points for those most concerned about the economy.

Newsweek reached out to McAuliffe for comment.

Algiers – The 47th edition of the International Fair of Algiers (IFA) will have the participation of 1,045 local and foreign companies. The exhibit will be held from May 28 to June 2nd at the Algiers Exhibition Centre in Algeria’s capital.

APS

Fair will have its 47th edition

The event will have 453 national and 592 foreign companies from 37 countries, according to Rachid Khiar, representative of the Algerian Company of Fairs and Exports (Safex, in the French acronym), the fair organizers. The theme of this edition is “Strong and serene Algeria”.

The United States are this year’s guest of honour and around 80 North-American exhibitors operating in the transport, technology, agriculture and pharmaceutical industry are expected.

Among the countries which will have representatives in the fair are also Argentina, Cuba, Venezuela, Turkey, Germany, France, Portugal, Great Britain, Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine, Libya, Kuwait, Jordan, Sudan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Senegal, Cameroon, Spain, Italy, India, Iran, South Africa, Belgium, Ukraine, Burkina Faso, Yemen and Mali.

“The International Fair of Algiers is a regional and national showcase to present the national production and discover foreign products with a view to using them in the achievement of the different economic and social development programmes of Algeria,” said the secretary general of the Trade Ministry, Aïssa Zelmati.

In his opinion, the choice of the US as guest of honour in the fair is the result of solid economic and trade relations between the two countries and the undeniable presence of North-American stands in the IFA even during hard times.

“We hope that the participating American companies will forge partnerships with their Algerian counterparts to develop economic and trading cooperation between the two countries,” said Zelmati.

The US ambassador to Algiers, Henry Ensher, said, for his part, there is a real potential in developing bilateral relations and the strengthening of cooperation beyond the oil industry.

“We will participate in the trade event to intensify and strengthen trading cooperation between Algeria and the US,” said the diplomat, adding that the forthcoming visit of the US Secretary of State of Energy “shows the importance of relations between the two countries.”

During the fair, a memorandum of understanding in pharmaceutical industry and other agreement between Algerian and American companies will be signed. Conferences, trade meetings and cultural events will be organized on the sidelines of the trade event.

Mexicans are sharing spectacular videos of bursts of blue lights seen streaking across the skies as a strong earthquake rocked the country’s Pacific coast city of Acapulco on Wednesday.

The 7.0 magnitude quake struck some 11 miles northeast of the resort city in the southwestern state of Guerrero. At least one person was killed, buildings were damaged and rockslides littered a major highway, but the temblor didn’t cause widespread damage.

It did rattle nerves though.

Felt some 200 hundred miles away in Mexico City, and lasting nearly a minute, residents fled into the streets as buildings swayed, sidewalks undulated and the blue lights burst brilliantly in the sky.

Twitter users posted videos of the blue flashes.

Soon users started using the hastag “Apocalipsis,” Spanish for the biblical term denoting the end of the world, apocalypse.

It’s a phenomena that occurs somewhat regularly

Rutgers University Physicist Troy Shinbrot says not to worry — the blue lights are not a sign of the world coming to an end.

“If it did, the apocalypse would have happened a thousand years ago when this was first discovered,” said Shinbrot. In an interview with NPR, he said the phenomena of so-called earthquake lights has been recorded historically and occurs fairly regularly.

Some scientists believe the eruption of light, or luminosity, is caused by the friction of rock near Earth’s crust, which releases energy into the atmosphere. The flash of light is produced near the planet’s surface.

Shinbrot has tried to recreate the phenomena in his lab and says he has measured voltage changes similar to what happens when the Earth’s crust slips in an earthquake.

He urges the scientifically curious to take a roll of adhesive tape into a dark closet and quickly peel back a strip. Shinbrot says a glow of light will be emitted. But he cautions not to relate “earthquake lights,” or EQL, and the adhesive tape experiment too closely, since there is still a lot scientists don’t know.

There’s disagreement about what actually causes the flashes

The U.S. Geological Survey makes that clear on its website, stating, “Geophysicists differ on the extent to which they think that individual reports of unusual lighting near the time and epicenter of an earthquake actually represent EQL.”

National Autonomous University of Mexico seismologist Victor Manuel Cruz Atienza does believe in the phenomena, but says last night’s sky was full of a lot of electrical activity from a rainstorm.

“We can’t for sure associate the earthquake with the light show we saw last night, especially given the rainstorm we were experiencing,” he told NPR. He said it was difficult for him to distinguish the difference on several videos he saw making the rounds on social media.

But both scientists agree there will likely be more chances to see the blue flashes across Mexico’s skies. And many Mexicans are pointing out that most probably will happen during the month of September sometime. That’s when many of Mexico’s greatest quakes have hit, including a 8.2 magnitude temblor that struck the state of Oaxaca exactly four years ago on September 7, 2017. Mexico City’s destructive 1985, 8.0 quake also hit on September 19th of that year.

That got Twitter users abuzz renaming the month, Septiemble, a combination of “September” and “Tremble” in Spanish.

Over the past 24 hours, a new line of attack has emerged from liberals upset about how the Mueller investigation appears to be turning out. Some of them are livid at Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the Mueller report, asking: How can we trust a Trump appointee to fairly represent its findings?

If Mueller found a shred of evidence proving that Trump conspired or coordinated with a dictatorial foreign adversary to compromise the basis of our republic, I’d want the facts unearthed and perhaps Trump bounced out of office in a heartbeat. But I’m also a patriot who would prefer that an elected president — even one I often disagree with — is not a traitor and is not removed from office in an angry coup.

So sure, it’s worth taking Barr’s letter with a grain of salt. But we also have to be honest about how limited this caveat truly is.

Barr’s hands were pretty much tied when it came to how much time he had to release his summary. The media spent the better part of two years promising that the Mueller report would spell the end of the Trump administration, and if Barr held on to it for too long without disclosing anything, allegations of a cover-up would surely have emerged.

And this is not Barr’s first rodeo. He’s hardly a Trump shill — he backed “Jeb!” in the primaries. Barr cut his teeth as a tough-on-crime prosecutor during the first Bush administration, first as assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel, then as deputy AG.

Bush then appointed Barr as his AG. Congress unanimously approved his confirmation in hearings described by the LA Times as “unusually placid.” He followed his tenure at the Justice Department with the standard corporate-counsel college circuit and led a relatively uncontroversial life until Trump flailed in his search to replace former AG Jeff Sessions.

Trump reportedly chose Barr specifically because Barr’s establishment credentials would make his confirmation possible. Until then, polarizing figures such as Pam Bondi and Chris Christie were being floated by the Trump team. Barr was the safe, “cuckservative” pick, the one who had been just critical enough of the Mueller team to garner Trump’s respect but not so sycophantic as to lose pivotal votes from purple state Senate democrats like Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

So we have an establishment intelligence figure more detested by Sen. Ron Paul, R-Ky., than by Joe Biden, who lauded Barr during his AG confirmation hearings. And perhaps even more importantly, we have an establishment intelligence figure who’s close, personal friends with Robert Mueller himself.

Sure, Barr could have sugarcoated the Mueller report in his summary with the intention of never revealing it to the public, perhaps equivocating around Trump’s malfeasance in the bet that no one in the entire Justice Department would leak Barr’s embellishments to the press. But doesn’t that seem like a bit of a gamble? Mueller would know if Barr is misrepresenting the truth, and surely that would make their wives’ Bible study quite awkward.

And isn’t that reputational risk not justifiable, considering the reward would be to protect a president who hasn’t proven deeply pivotal in Barr’s career? If anything, Barr did Trump more of a favor in agreeing to take over the messiest department of his presidency than the reverse. It’s not as though, prior to December, Barr’s career wasn’t already a notable success.

Again, anything is possible, and there’s nothing wrong with a little skepticism when the stakes are as high as they are with the Mueller report. But the notion that Barr had ample motive to spin the truth for Trump isn’t just misguided. It’s downright laughable.

Soldiers and police were struggling to restore order in parts of South Africa on Tuesday, as police said the number of people killed in days of protests and looting rose to at least 72 in some of the worst violence the country has seen in years.

Protests erupted last week as former South African President Jacob Zuma, 79, turned himself in to authorities to serve a 15-month jail term for contempt of court. He had refused to appear at an anti-corruption commission to face several allegations, including bribery and fraud, which he has repeatedly denied.

Among those killed in the violence were 10 who died in a stampede in the township of Soweto, Police Ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba told CNN. More than 1,200 others have been arrested in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal – where Zuma is from – and Gauteng.

For almost a week now, protesters and looters have set malls ablaze and clashed with police, who have fired back with rubber bullets and are now so overwhelmed that the military has been brought in to back them up.

CNN on Tuesday visited Soweto, where shop owner Rahman, who did not provide his last name, said he is afraid he’s lost everything.

“Even right now where I’m going to stay, what I’m going to eat, what I’m going to do – we don’t know nothing. Really, we lose everything,” he told CNN.

“It’s very painful, and I don’t know what I can say about that. This is not our fault. I don’t know what happened with the government. We don’t know but this is not our fault. We didn’t do nothing. We just lose like that.”

Soldiers patrolled the streets of Johannesburg in armored personnel carriers Tuesday, holding rifles with live ammunition as the military worked to gain some sense of order following the violence.

South African Police Minister Bheki Cele vowed to curb the continuing violence that erupted over the weekend.

“We cannot allow anyone to make a mockery of our democratic state and we have instructed the law enforcement agencies to double their efforts to stop the violence and to increase deployment on the ground,” he said, pleading for those demonstrating to do so peacefully.

“No amount of unhappiness or personal circumstances from our people gives the right to anyone to loot, vandalize and do as they please and break the law.”

The government in neighboring Botswana on Tuesday issued an advisory for its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to parts of South Africa.

On Monday evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation to call for calm and announced the military would be deployed in the impacted provinces. He acknowledged the protests and looting may have started with political grievances, but said “opportunistic” criminal elements had taken over.

He also warned continued protests and looting could further undermine the nation’s Covid-19 response and vaccination rollout, with several vaccine sites forced to stop administering doses over the violence.

The country’s Covid-19 death toll has been surging since June and doctors describe a system beyond its breaking point – with insufficient hospital beds and barely enough oxygen.

Zuma handed himself over to police last week after days of speculation over whether he would comply with the court’s orders to imprison him. Zuma’s lawyers Monday argued for a sentence reduction.

Zuma served as president from 2009 to 2018 and was once widely celebrated as a key figure in the country’s liberation movement. He spent 10 years in prison with anti-apartheid hero and former President Nelson Mandela.

But his nine years in power were marred with allegations of high-level corruption.

Zuma is accused of corruption involving three businessmen close to him – brothers Atul, Ajay and Rajesh Gupta – and allowing them to influence government policy, including the hiring and firing of ministers to align with the family’s business interests. The Guptas deny wrongdoing but left South Africa after Zuma was ousted from the presidency.

Former President Donald Trump made a surprise appearance at a dog rescue fundraiser being held at Mar-a-Lago on Friday — a rare sighting of the 45th president in post-White House life.

WPTV caught images of Trump, sporting a “Make America Great Again” hat, making a quick appearance at a fundraiser for a rescue mission to remove dogs from the meat market trade in China.

GRAHAM BACKS LARA TRUMP FOR SENATE IN NC, AS WALKER HITS BACK

“So, I didn’t exactly prepare for this,” Trump added, saying that he had been walking by and heard people yelling. “But I was walking by and I hear everybody screaming in the ballroom and I said ‘what’s going on?’ and they said ‘we’re going to help dogs’ and that’s OK with me.”

He praised Lara Trump, who was in attendance, and added: “I don’t know, you’re running for the Senate?”

“What you’re doing is so important and so great, and so important and I’m with you 100%, and we had many meetings in the White House and the Oval Office, having to do with saving and helping dogs and that’s what we want to do,” Trump said in images and video caught by WPTV reporter T.A. Walker.

He said “tremendous progress had been made.”

A source familiar with Trump’s schedule confirmed that he attended the event to Fox News, and the group running the fundraiser — Big Dog Ranch Rescue — issued a statement about the event.

“President Trump visited the event and thanked those attending for their support in helping Big Dog Ranch Rescue save 47,000 dogs to date,” spokesman Chase Scott told Fox News. “The crowd responded with a standing ovation for the President, Lara Trump and Lauree Simmons for the work they did to help pass the first national animal anti-cruelty bill in U.S. history.”

“The fundraiser was sold out and so was spread over 2 days to allow for social distancing and raises funds to save abused, abandoned and injured dogs and to bring dogs from China who would otherwise be victims of the horrific dog meat trade,” he said.

LARA TRUMP MULLS SENATE BID IN NATIVE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

Trump has released a number of statements since leaving office in January and made his first major public speech earlier this month at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) — where he tore into President Biden’s time in office.

Trump is being closely watched for signs of a potential 2024 run, something he hinted at during his CPAC speech.

Lara Trump has been tied to a potential North Carolina Senate run to replace outgoing Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C.
