A storm set to strike early Saturday is expected to slather Western Pennsylvania’s roads with a mix of ice and rain and dump 1 to 5 inches of snow, prompting officials to warn of potentially dangerous travel conditions.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of the region from 1 a.m. Saturday through late afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Moon. The advisory also applies to parts of eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia.

Pittsburgh’s northern and eastern suburbs are set to get some of the heaviest precipitation locally.

Less than 3 inches of snow is expected to fall across Greensburg and Latrobe in Westmoreland County, the city of Pittsburgh and the Alle-Kiski Valley, including New Kensington and Lower Burrell, meteorologists with the weather service said.

In Ligonier and Donegal, residents could see up to 2 inches of snow and wind gusts as high as 40mph. Places around Interstate 80 could get as much as 5 inches of snow amid wind gusts up to 35mph.

Allegheny County’s Department of Public Works has crews standing by to work overtime to keep roads and bridges cleared.

Twenty-two of the county’s snow plows are prepared to deploy starting at 2 a.m., county officials said.

“Public Works drivers will be kept over the end of their shifts and more drivers will be brought in, as needed, to provide constant coverage until precipitation stops and roadways are clear,” the county said via Twitter.

Roads could be icy and slippery for much of the day. Officials urge drivers to slow down, leave extra space between cars and give salt trucks plenty of space to navigate.

Snow will melt into a mix of freezing rain and sleet, then mostly rain by Saturday afternoon, the weather service said.

Saturday’s temperature is expected to reach a high of 44 degrees, with a low in the mid-20s. Sunday will get colder, with a low of 19 degrees and a high of 28.
