Atmospheric concentrations of CO₂

The amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere has fluctuated over time, but human activity since the Industrial Revolution has pushed levels to unprecedented highs.

CO₂ concentration measured in parts per million (ppm)

Scientists can determine past CO₂ levels in the atmosphere by studying air bubbles preserved in ice cores.

For over 800,000 years, the concentration of CO₂ fluctuated between about 173 parts per million and just below 300 parts per million.

These fluctuations happened over tens to hundreds of thousands of years and were caused by very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy the planet receives.

The Industrial Revolution and the mass burning of fossil fuels changed this. By the 1950s, the concentration of CO₂ rose to above 300 parts per million for the first time in 800,000 years.

It is now over 410 parts per million. As a result, global temperatures have risen by 1.1 degrees since the pre-industrial era.

“This is a group who could transition to providing this service to society at large,” said Graeme Sweeney, chairman of the Zero Emissions Platform (ZEP), which is one of the more powerful advocates for CCS in Europe. The group acts as an advisor to the European Commission, from which it also receives part of its funding, and comprises research groups, the European Trade Union Confederation, as well as many of the world’s biggest oil companies, including Shell, Total, Equinor, ExxonMobil and BP.
