Americans have had their eyes glued to the happenings in Georgia, one of the key battleground states that will determine who will be the next president of the United States.
Democratic challenger Joe Biden, a longtime senator and former vice president under Barack Obama, leads incumbent Republican Donald Trump in Georgia by a margin so narrow that the state announced there would be a recount.
With a recount looming and, per Georgia voting system implementation manager Gabriel Sterling, still over 4,000 votes to count as of Friday morning, election officials in the state are understandably under a lot of pressure.
Sterling brought some levity to the situation Friday during a press conference by cracking that election officials needed some time to “focus on the really important things in this state” … like University of Georgia football.
“Our hope would be today, it could slip into tomorrow because, again, everybody’s exhausted,” Sterling said in response to a question about when the state’s count would be finished. “It’s Friday. There’s a Georgia game tomorrow, it’s kind of a big one. We got to focus on the really important things in this state sometimes in order to recover to be prepared for dealing with what is a vital thing for this country.”
The game Sterling is referring to is the annual “Cocktail Party” between the Georgia and University of Florida football teams. The game between the Bulldogs and Gators is always big, but this year’s contest, slated to start at 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS) in Jacksonville, Florida, has extra juice.
No. 5 Georgia and No. 8 Florida both enter the contest with one loss. The winner of this game takes the inside track in the Southeastern Conference’s East Division and keeps hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff alive. Georgia has had the advantage recently in this rivalry series, winning the last three contests.
