Procrastinators planning to make a special New Year’s Eve meal and toast in 2021 are running out of time.
Many of the nation’s grocery stores – including Trader Joe’s, Costco and Publix – will close hours before the ball drops New Year’s Eve. Others stores follow regular hours Thursday or close a few hours earlier.
Stores are expected to be crowded Thursday as more people are expected to celebrate at home. Many restaurants also will have special hours Thursday.
According to a survey of 1,000 consumers by Suzy, a real-time market research platform, 84% of American adults say they plan to stay home New Year’s Eve.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, 33% of those surveyed said their plans are vastly different from last year. Expect some stores to require masks and limit the number of shoppers allowed inside.
Drugstore chains including CVS and Walgreens will be open Thursday and Friday along with many of the nation’s convenience stores.

Acme Market: Close at 8 p.m.
Albertsons: Hours vary with many open regular hours.
Aldi: Stores close at 7 p.m.
BI-LO: Normal hours.
Costco: Varies, most clubs close at 6 p.m.
Cub Foods: Varies.
Food Lion: Varies.
Fresh Market: Stores close at 8 p.m.
Fresh Thyme: Stores close at 8 p.m.
Giant: Open until 9 p.m.
Giant Eagle: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Harris Teeter: Normal hours.
Harveys Supermarket: Normal hours.
H-E-B: Regular hours.
Hy-Vee: Varies.
Instacart: Normal hours.
Kroger: Varies.
Lowes Foods: Regular hours.
Meijer: Most Meijer stores are open 6 a.m. to midnight. From 6 to 8 a.m. Thursday, the store has dedicated shopping time for senior citizens and those with chronic health conditions.
Publix: All stores close at 9 p.m.
Ralphs: Hours vary.
Safeway: Hours vary.
Sam’s Club: Clubs close at 6 p.m.
ShopRite: Hours vary.
Shipt: Delivery times vary.
Smart & Final: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sprouts Farmers Market: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
