The extreme heat wave gripping the Western United States and Canada is spurring wildfires in several U.S. states and British Columbia.

Driving the news: Evacuation orders were issued in California, Oregon, Idaho, and B.C. In Arizona, two firefighters died when their aircraft crashed while responding to a wildfire in Mohave County, per a Bureau of Land Management statement.

  • Oregon’s Bootleg fire was threatening transmission lines that supply California with power after doubling in size to 120 square miles on Saturday.
  • A huge wildfire in Northern California’s Plumas National Forest, known as the Beckwourth Complex, “generated its own lightning,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Evacuation orders: The Beckwourth Complex blaze, the combination of two fires, saw the evacuation of 2,800 people and the closure of the forest as it burned across some 55,000 acres in total, per AP.

  • The southern Oregon wildfire triggered mandatory evacuations as it threatened some 3,000 homes, CBS News notes.
  • A brush fire in Southern California’s eastern San Diego County saw two Native American reservations evacuated on Saturday, AP reports.
  • There were also evacuations in the small, remote community of Dixie in north-central Idaho, according to AP.
  • In Canada, a new wildfire near Vernon, British Columbia, on Saturday triggered evacuations as it burned across some 25 acres of land, according to local news outlet Castanet.

Of note: California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday built on his emergency proclamation made a day earlier to free up additional energy capacity.

  • Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R) issued an emergency declaration for wildfire on Friday that mobilized National Guard firefighters and aircraft to assist in firefighting efforts.
